      What about lightning strikes? Sitting in a metal box outside in the middle of a storm while above ground seems concerning from a lightning standpoint.
      I'm sure they've tested for this but I think I'll stick with unground. Barring that it's a very interesting concept and a more affordable lifesaver

    4:59 December tornados is what brought me to this channel. I have some concerns about that storm shelter that you need to address. I noticed that the door opens outward. This would mean that debris that settles on top of or beside of the shelter after a storm may block your exit because you will be unable to open the door. Therefore the shelter needs adequate ventilation and the ability to pass a cell phone signal through in order to notify people that you're trapped. Also, a design that allows the hinges to be disabled from inside the shelter allowing the door to simply fall away maybe a great safety innovation.

    • @elenasunshine
      @elenasunshine 7 місяців тому +2

      My first thought also was outside debris preventing the door from opening

    • @michaelschauf3542
      @michaelschauf3542 7 місяців тому +4

      I’d be worried about debris getting literally thrown into the shelter. I’ve seen a tornado throw straw through a telephone pole before, so let’s say rebar gets slung at the shelter it’s going right through that steel, especially if it’s being thrown around 130 to 180 mph.
      It’s neat but not as safe as you would get from underground shelter, not to mention a EF5 is going to rip that out of the ground along with the concrete it’s bolted to. There’s a reason you’re told to take shelter on a basement or ditch or anywhere that’s low.
      It’s a nice thought but not at all that safe.
      Now it may hold up to EF1 or EF2 but once you get to the bigger ones it might not hold up to well.

    One of the reasons people dig those deep holes for tornado shelter's with a narrow and sometimes earthen path down to the shelter is because tree's and large amounts of debris do not typically get in front of the door by doing that. If you get in the aboveground shelter and a large chunk of your house or a big tree from the yard gets uprooted and land in front of the door or even laying against the door, you could be in their for hours before you're found. Not knocking the product, just think about how you install it, down in hole would actually be safer than just sitting there on a patio.

      Bolting the round house down on a pad of cement does not seem so good. tornadoes rip huge trees out of the ground so the bolt system to a pad of cement i dont know. unless they are ten foot threaded bolts into the earth. a relative in oklahoma spent four thousand on an inground storm shelter and it was well worth the money as they live in a tornado zone.

      Sollution: put the shelter above ground bolted to a concrete slab with a downwards emergency exit that leads to an open trench covered with a metal walking grate in sections light enough for a child to unlock and lift off from below, and with a manual drainage pump so that you won't get trapped by a flooded escape trench.

    I live near Pittsburgh, PA and older houses have a thing known as a Pittsburgh potty that is a small bathroom in the basement so coal miners and steel workers could bathe downstairs and not track dirt through the house. The Pittsburgh potty also makes a great place to take shelter during a tornado. I'm glad we have one in our house.

    I live in Michigan, and a month ago, a massive pop-up storm as a result of the cold front and warm humid front combining causing a devastating wind/ lightning storm this state has not seen in about a century. It was scary as a couple of tornados touched down, and around 7 periodic giant 75mph + wind gusts tore through many counties causing heavy damage and some tragic losses, my home town got almost completely closed in by downed trees and power lines. Im my 20 years of life I never seen or heard thunder of that magnitude ever, not even my fire chief dad who is in his sixties said he never seen anything like it. Im scared of a storm like that happening again so soon.

      @@FLPhotoCatcher I purchased one of these units for my house in Arkansas. The engineers designed the cylinder shaped shelters with 8 tresses meant to be imbedded in concrete. The science and testing behind the cylinder shows a huge difference in deflecting debris because of the shape. We had a decent summer in southern Ontario. Outside of the cement city jungles we barely had a half dozen days reaching 90 degrees.
    Let the cold come in. My garden vegetables that are left need two or three decent frosts to 'sweeten' them up before harvest.
    Looks like we will get a decent Indian summer as well which will allow those last minute outdoor chores to be buttoned up before the snow flies.
    Have lots of indoor projects to complete this winter and my humble abode is well insulated.
    Cheers.

    Ryan is actually right. I remember my teacher saying no homework on October 6th because it was the last day it would be so nice outside. He was not lying. As a person living in southeastern Michigan, I can say we might get hit effectively. I’m definitely gonna have to get ready for a lot of natural disasters being said that Michigan is right next to Canada (because you have Detroit and Toronto separated). I may be in southeastern Michigan, but our state will still have to deal with so much rain. I pray for the South, and that the tornadoes don’t cause death, nor injuries.

    I'm seeing one problem with the above ground storm shelter. The door opens outward instead of inward. If a tree or heavy debris gets stuck on that and blocks the door, you won't be able to get out and if you live in a rural area, you'll just die in there.
