  • It’s time to start adding some electical accessories to the Jeep Glaidaotr, but first I decided to build a custom hub using an sPOD system to keep all the wiring clean and organized. In this video, I install the sPOD Bantam with HD, wire up and ARB compressor and show you how I built a custom plate in one of the Leitner pods. Let’s run some wires!
    Here are links to several of the items used in this video:
    Aluminum Plate: amzn.to/2Vub4b5
    Aluminum Spacer: amzn.to/2AXIyVR
    Wire Braid Blue: amzn.to/2p9LQTq
    Wire Braid Red: amzn.to/2M2tKM3
    Wire Glands: amzn.to/2AXIPrR
    4g wire: amzn.to/2M04dmq
    Power Terminal: amzn.to/2LYmm46
    ARB Compressor: amzn.to/2Vsyr4D
    sPOD Bantam (touch screen version) amzn.to/2nvny5C
    sPOD HD (SE circuit system) amzn.to/2VroXqs
    80amp fuse (installed after the video) amzn.to/2M1Pbwx
    KC Pro6 Driving Lights: amzn.to/2M3ekqA

    recommend a resetable circuit breaker instead of a fuse battery side. i put an 80 amp on my JLUR feeding 6 gauge to the back seat, works great! and i can interrupt the power with the button on the breaker if needed.

    Ground to frame. Then bond/ground the truck bed to frame at all 4 corners and bond/ground the battery negative terminal to the frame and to the body. You'll have a much better ground and less spurious emissions from radiating ground wires. You will have less system voltage drop while under load, and SNR will drop significantly...which will be important when you start focusing on radio gear.

    Loved the video! I must say I love how clean you're keeping the build. This is how it's meant to be done! Beautiful work! I have a few suggestions you may like - Add some sealant to the glands so that they don't let water in. Also, perhaps look at adding PC Cabinet Fans to suck some of the hot air out. You get ones that work on 12V that are small and powerful enough. If you mount these under the box, the chances of water entry are greatly reduced. Perhaps add some spacers under the compressor to aid airflow as well. And maybe spray the aluminum plate at the back black. Just looks cleaner. Keep up the great work, look forward to many more adventures!

    Good call on the battery side fusing. Only two things I'd do different are;

    2. Zip-tie a piece of hose around the battery wires where they go into the frame.

    Totally of the topic, but, wanted to get your opinion on an issue I am having with the installation of a 28" Chase light from KC Light. Support from KC has been shall we say useless (in the kindest way)... Installation is on a 2019 Jeep Wrangler JLU (non-LED lighting system). I have a Vos Switch installed, using to control both the Amber flashing lights and White Spotlights on the bar, working as designed. The issue I am having is with the Brake Light on the bar. Followed the installation directions to the "T", direct black/red wire connection to the battery, etc. Activation of the 4 way flashers, thumbs up functioning. Only when using the Brake and or Turn signal... the appropriate lights activate and work correctly for about 25 seconds then do a double flash, double flash, and then quit working totally. Flashers/Spotlight still work though. Is there something (part/component) I need to correct this. KC's answer is to have it professionally installed, my reply is that the installer would use the very same set of instructions to do the installation (costing me a butt load of money in the process). Suggestions?

  • @keefgtp
    @keefgtp 5 років тому

    Not sure if you've already tackled this problem, but as for preventing the cable sheath from rubbing on the chassis I believe you should do it a different way. You mentioned putting a rubber seal around the holes in the chassis - instead of that, I think you should put a stronger sheath on that segment of cable. The problem with putting a rubber seal on the chassis itself is the "Honda Problem": Putting a rubber seal around steal will trap moisture and cause the metal to rust quickly and badly. The reason you see old Hondas with a lot of rust around the fender lips is because Honda put a rubber seal around the pinch weld. It had a more finished look and feel, but it trapped moisture and caused rust in virtually every application. The solution on a clean example is to simply remove the rubber seal, preventing future rust. A truck chassis is typically even more rust-prone due to lacking primer and paint so the problem could be even worse in the future. Adding some sort of thick sheath to the cables, such as very thick heat wrap, or perhaps a hard wrap like PVC or something, might be a better option.

    dunno about the glad in particular but most pickup trucks have flex between cab and rear bed, if true w/glad those wires from main batt could get squashed/shorted, maybe double check if that occurs. Google it, but you maybe better off w/a fuse by battery vs breaker, just my 2 cents awesome video To make it removable check out power pole connectors and or molex .

    You need adel clamps for those wires. It's a must. Google it. We use it in aviation. You can buy them at home improvement box stores and auto part stores. If you dont do something other then those zip ties, the wires will eventually rub through that mesh and then the wire. Just a little FYI.

You would have a bunch of connectors at the bottom of your black box that you can plug and unplug as you load and unload electrical accessories from the bed of your truck. You could also just unplug everything from said connectors and remove the black box for servicing.
    All the connections inside the box would remain fixed and stationary, so no need to pull any wires out if you decide to remove the black box from the rack system.

    One thing to consider though. The wires that you ran up between the cab and bed are in a precarious location if you were to get rear-ended and have the bed meet the cab. Although a long shot, they could be pinched and positive could short out to the ground, bed, or cab. Might want to pull them down and reroute them up into the bed itself through an insulated hole.

    I’m a simple guy. I see a trail recon notification, I click, i like, and I watch.

    I think all of your videos are great. Have been curious how you handle wire management inside the cabin of your vehicles (Wrangler and Gladiator).

    Hey Brad great job but I wanted to mention I could swear I saw a video on those pods not being completely water tight. I know where you are is dry outside most of the time but just be aware you may have some leakage during rainy days. If you addressed this already or it's a non issue then belay my last.

    Will you need a dual battery if you run a fridge?

    Nice install. If you move the switch box up and put an piece of angle below it, it would allow more space for storing hoses on top of the compressor with less risk of the switches being accidentally activated by loose gear.

    Glad you mentioned the primary fuse. A quick disconnect comes in handy too. Less likely to short out if you need to work in the box. Plus, you don’t have to break terminal connection.

    For heat removal when running the compressor, connect a computer fan to the bottom of the box. It'll be a simple and clean solution.

    I have had 3 humming birds decide to enter my garage and all crawled in the same spot and die. Just odd. All within 2 yr time

    Hey Brad, always love the videos. Question: why did you go back to a compressor? You seemed pretty excited about the C02 tank you mounted in the JLU.

      The JT will be doing long trips, so don't want to stress about running out of CO2... I still plan to bring a tank.

    Suggestion for your ventilation on the box, try using a P.C. fan after you find a location for making the event holes.
