Did Re-Gearing My Jeep Gladiator Affect the GAS MILEAGE?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- After installing larger tires, a lift kit and adding several heavy accessories to my Jeep Gladiator, I began to notice a reduction in performance. I elected to swap out the ring and pinon gears to see if I could get some of that performance back. In the process I wanted to do a test to see how it would affect my gas mileage. We tried to be as fare as possible in our pre and post gas mileage test, but because this is real world, there are several factors that can affect the results. #jeepgladiator #mpgtest #gasmileage

It wasn't mentioned in the video, but yes I did recalibrate my speedometer to compensate for both the tire size and gear ratio. As for why I chose 5:13's, I think 4.88 is a good ratio to go with for a 38" tire, but because I carry extra gear and plan on doing some off-road towing I wanted to go slightly deeper, and that's why I chose 5:13'. Sorry for not explaining that in the video.
TrailRecon I am concerned if the slight increased rpm (4:88) will move it up the horsepower curve enough to still pull 8th gear at interstate speed (75 mph). I realize I am on the verge of asking to much. You did confirm you see 8th a lot more with gear swap.
What’s your rpm at 70mph in 8th gear ?
Thanks for answering my question before I could ask it.
What did you use to recalibrate your speedo?
I’m currently running 37 Pats, would you recommend 5:13s if I plan on building my rig similarly to yours as far as weight is concerned? Thanks Master Chief!🤙🏽
The added weight of the breakfast burritos has made this test invalid! :D
LOL!
Hey brad. Having had both 4.88 and 5.13 gears, which would you recommend for a daily driver? Is there that much of a difference? How do they compare on the interstate?
The MPG gain wasn’t super impressive, however the increase in MPG PLUS the extra low end power is a win IMO.
Brad for skinny guy you're always eating :D
LOL! I'm thankful for a healthy metabolism!
@@TrailRecon you have places to burn it off out there . . . unlike the miserable North East rust belt 😁😁😁
That’s the whole point of off-roading!!!!!
This is an excellent format. The tech talk, the motor noise, cruising backroads, scenic stops. More like this please?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I choose the "ignorance is bliss" method of calculating my jeeps mileage. Turned off the mpg thing on the dash, it was just too damn depressing. Still won't drive anything else though!
I’d be celebrating 1 MPG at those prices! Crazy!!
Wow, I've never seen over $4 per gallon before, heard about it but never on a gas pump. Paid $2.39 today.
I wish we had $2.39!!!
Iran just attacked the US base so everybody is going to see over $4 gas real soon.
@@whoeever doubt it but I bet Iran see $40.00/gallon. I might have to work an extra overtime day per month though. 😁😁😁

Great Job Brad! I do a lot of gears for people and explaining what you have found in this video people don’t believe me. Not only do you pick up a little mileage but it’s so much more fun to drive a properly geared 4x4 on or off road.
Thank you! Great to hear you are seeing similar result!
Driving a 100k miles with gas being $4 you would save less that 2 grand so dont change gears for gas savings.
Wow, gentlemen, I am so impressed that i subscribed, I`m an old disabled mechanics and over the years explained or at least tried with some guys to explain what happens with bigger tires and gearing, and then of course, braking and shocks, so many other sites just add tires and never explain the changes in bottom end performance versus top end and real-life changes. Well done!
$4/gal for 87???? Yeah, I'd be worried about MPG if I lived there too.
that's because it is socialist run commie-california... here in liberty capitalist run FL its 2.20/gal .... socialist arent good with money
The burritos are going to kill your milage.
The extra gas they're producing will make up for that.
@@time-lapserpro4370 they should have a way to boost engines with methane coming from the cab
There used to be a cooking on your engine cook book called Manifold Destiny.
Had a 26' Penske loaded and towing my CJ7 on a trailer. The truck's rear tire developed a bad vibration over 50 so I had to drive from LA to OKC doing 50. I got 8 mpg before the vibration and 16 mpg after. Lesson learned about pushing air.
Wow, I called it at 17.2mpg! On my 96 Chevy, 350 AT, 35" BFG's and 6" lift I went 3.73 to 4.56 gears and went from 17mpg to 18mpg on the highway. But City went from 13 to 15 because the lower gears made it easier on the engine to get to speed. Gears will help your engine and mileage, it may just take a few years of driving to make up the $2,000 price of them. Great study!
I'd be willing to bet that the lights and the roof top tent are each worth another 1 to 1 1/2 MPG . Bringing you up to that elusive 20 MPG!
Was cool seeing my old stomping grounds. The tower ( really the caves) holds a special memory for my wife and I. Oh, and holy crap, I cant believe 87 is $4.03!!!! I am reminded of one of the reasons I fled CA.
Thanks Brad - I’ve been waiting on a video about re-gearing the Gladiator! How many hours labor did that take? I imagine it’s expensive. Also does it void the manufacturer warranty on the drivetrain?
I was told that it does not void the manufactures warranty when doing a lift & regear. There was some sort of landmark case that made it possible to retain the manufactures warranty & they can't drop you for it. I could have been lied by my Jeep shop you never know but this was what I was told.
From an internet search:
Regearing does not void your warranty, BUT don't expect a Jeep dealer to fix any issues with gears that failed. The replacement parts would be your responsibility to get from aftermarket manufacturer.
Great video Brad! Very informative and even entertaining for what can be a dry subject. Your co-host did a great job too, I hope you do more videos with him in the future!
Thank you! Ryan is a great guy and here is a video discussion we did when we were on the trail in Alaska you might enjoy: ua-cam.com/video/5te-TkRaCXI/v-deo.html
Good stuff Brad. It's going to be very interesting to see how a comparably equipped diesel version will do if Jeep ever makes it happen.
I'm hearing the Wrangler diesel is going to blow the mpg I'm getting out of the water!
Love your Gladiator build! Impressed with the MPGs you are getting. I’m getting around 17 on the Highway in my JK. But average around 15 on all around driving including Overlanding trips.
The question will be,"will the mpg on the diesel make up for the increase in cost per gallon?"
Of course the diesel engine will outlast a gasoline engine by a long shot and have better overall performance and for those reasons I would go diesel every time.
My question is how will it take to recoup the additional cost of the diesel engine? Obviously, the cost per gallon is the big factor but how many gallons? There has to be a math whiz out there who can figure that out for us Liberal Arts majors.😀
I've owned 7 Jeeps, all just minimally powered. The diesel is a $4000 option on the Wrangler and diesel cost .40 more than gas. For my personal satisfaction and driving pleasure I will pay the extra cost regardless. Life is short and you can't take it with you.
this is exactly opposite of what most people tell you, great to hear man ! 488"s here I come ! (on my JLUR on 37s) thanks Brad, great video man !
The 8 speed changes everything.
I'm thinking about going 5.13's on my JLUR also on 37's. I would love the low end punch, going from 4.10 to 4.88 just doesn't seem like it would be worth it.
@@GSXRKLLR in 4 low it would be way to low for me with out a throttle comp....
Thanks for another great video Brad! You were going to discuss why you choose the 5.13 over the 4.88 or 5.38 gear ratio? Short answer?
Prescott Lederer also want to know as 4:88 puts it closer the factory ratio.
I think 4.88 is a good ratio to go with for 38's, but because I carry a lot of gear and I will be doing some off-road towing I wanted to with a slightly deeper gear, so that's why I chose 5:13's. Sorry for not explaining that in the video.
I'm curious how many RPM's your turning at 65mph. My 2dr JL with a 6spd manual and 3.45 gears on 35-inch tires turns 1500 RPM at 65mph. I usually stay in 5th gear on the highway because I'll lose speed going up grades. I do average 21mpg. I'm planning on upgrading to Rubicon axles. I think the 4:10 gears would work well with 35's.
Jeepdog JL 4.10 or 4.27 is a great choice for 35”s
Nice job Brad! love the wrap on your Glad! hope you leave it on..
There's a fine line between making a UA-cam channel successful and selling out. Where does one draw that line and find that balance? Started from scratch and as a channel grows the more sponsors it attracts. The more sponsors one gets, the more it starts to look like an infomercial, biased and unorganic. Then along comes the haters and trolls. How does one know where to draw the line before their channel gets too big to the point where the content becomes unrelatable to the average Jeeper?
Why am I stuck at 13.5 on 35's ? 2021 Gladiator Overland 2" mopar lift?
At the risk of appearing like a smart ass, I do not concur with your "it's not scientific."
Steps of the Scientific Process:
1) Setting a Goal or projecting a result. 2) Interpretation of the Results. 3) Replication and Gradual Accumulation. 4) Conclusion.
Welcome to the community of scientists...
Appreciate that! Thank you!
I have seen significant gains with Premium NON-Ethanol fuel. Crazy?
Not crazy, or surprising at all. It's common knowledge that ethanol-mix fuels (such as E-85) get significantly less mile-per-gallon than non-ethanol fuels.
What was the rough cost on the parts and installation? Curious from a payback point of view on the fuel savings.
On the second trip u didn't need to pump so much because the tacos gave you extra gas
How you gone a MPG test but make all extra stops? Pointless! We are watching for MPG not for you to tell us what’s a good taco place…
Not scientific... but it’s a Jeep. Nice improvement.
I cringe every time I gas up. I filled up twice in three months. Holllidays were expensive this year oh well. Good information as always 😀😀😀😀
Nice. I want that lifestyle.
Cool video. Better acceleration and better gas mileage. Win/Win.. You had to reprogram everything for the gears and the tires? Also, there was a difference between the computer and the real gas used on the 1st test, what about the 2nd test?
Which spot would you choose to get you Jeep re-geared? This place or Rebel Off Road? I’ve watch both of your videos and I’m planning on getting this done to my JL.
In 01 I bought a new gutless 1500 ram 4x4 with a 360 magnum engine. 3.55 gears got 11 mpg max. Tranny blew at 20k, factory reman.Put 33” tires on and got 9 mpg and more gutless. Blew the tranny at 40k. Put 4.10 gears in with a hand built tranny and got 12 mpg, more if it was unloaded and I milked it. Even when it was all stock, it struggled to stay in 4th gear. The 4.10 gears were way better and the transmission lasted another 200k when I sold it for scrap because I live in Michigan and the salt ate it up. I did sell the transmission to a friend of mine who put it in his plow truck and ran it for another few years. I still should’ve went with 4.56 gears though. Those 360 magnums were worthless!!!
It also doesnt feel like its going to explode going up a a mountain.
I'm curious if you and Ryan gave any consideration to tooth engagement on 5.13 v. 4.88; I've been told the pinion gets pretty small on 5.13 with like only one full tooth of engagement on Dana 44. It is something I've been struggling with as I do not have the 4:1 transfer case, 2.72:1 I think is ratio. 5.13 might make crawling a bit better. So before I put lockers and gears in my open diffs of my JT I would be interested to hear what you and Ryan's thoughts are
harley rice you make good point! If you are going to thrash your axles with big horsepower don’t drop below 4.56 . All the new vehicles put securities in place to keep you from breaking the tiny 1st gear in the transmission. So that helps a bunch protect the ring and pinions. Check out the ratio chart on G2’s website and that will give you an idea of what gears will fit your application and tire size best.
@@drtstar1 -as chance would have it, that ratio chart on G2 web site kicks to a non-domain... if I'm clicking the right link... anyway what are your thoughts regarding the higher transfer case gearing and 4.88 / 5.13's? BTW thanks for all you guys do!
harley rice modern crawl ratios are respectable these days starting in the 60/1 range factory. You can’t go wrong with lower ratios. When you pick your gears be thinking were your build will go in the future. 37’s today? 40’s 3 years from now? I tend to caution to the lower ratio if I’m at a crossroad about it. Hope that helps
@@drtstar1 - it certainly does! My intention is to go to 39's and your video with Brad utilizing 5.13 makes me a bit more comfortable that i will not be to low geared for highway and daily driving but in a good spot with the 2.72 Tcase for crawling... thank you again!
On my JKU I ran 5.38 on 37s. That thing went about anywhere. I test drive a JT Overland on 37s yesterday and it drive well but didn't have gears done. It wouldn't back over a curb until I put it in 4lo and it struggled then. I'm really thinking about the Gladiator but now I'm trying to figure out the payload issue.
Curious I have 35 inch tires on my 2022 Jeep Gladiator. I see that you had 40 inch tires on yours. Would you still recommend 5.13 gears?
What size is your tank i have a 2022 JT on 38 with a 3.5 sus lift it only give mes me 230mi your is at 346mi
You would have figured Mopar would have ditched the gas cap by now.
I didn't realize bigger tires have such a negative effect on mpg. How it it possible that it has a negative impact on breaking? The size of the rotors aren't changing, just the height of the truck. I mean, the r..... Hold up, I just realized it lmao. NVM. It make sense to me now
Bwahahaha......25 mpg with 2020 wrangler 2dr soft top..with windows and top open or running ac...but i have to use it as a daily driver 120 per day sooooo....stock is king for me right now..and i have a blast off-roading...it will never be a rock crawler...but that's 👌 with me to each his own...srock jeeps are impressive and knowing how to navigate obstacles...
I am wondering what the change will be when you go low pro on the tent? Let’s face it, there is a ton of gear on the rig and to be honest.......you didn’t buy it for the gas mileage!
Thanks for the video and if I ever get to California again, I want a breakfast burrito like that!!
I would love to see this test repeated after removing the tent, rack and lights.
@TrailRecon are you running the stock diff covers? if not, which ones did you go with?
$4 a gallon!?! Holy California!
Overdrive is meaningless in the world of 6, 8, 10 speed transmissions. It's the overall ratio that matters. The benefit of regearing and regaining access to your 7th and 8th gears has nothing to do with the magic of overdrive. 0.67 * 3.45 is the same as 1.00 * 2.31. The 1st generation Chevrolet Equinox with the 3.4 V6 and the 5 speed auto did not have overdrive. Yet they still did 2300 rpm at 75 mph. An automatic Honda Civic from 2005 has not one, but two overdrives and It still does 2900 rpm at 75. Fuel economy gains from regearing have everything to do with the computer software that controls the torque converter lockup schedule. Gearing numerically higher to compensate for larger tires brings the engine to road speed ratios closer, where the computer is happier to lock the torque converter sooner. Locked torque converter means less slippage, less slippage means less energy wasted as heat. Making gears taller by putting on bigger tires makes the torque converter lock later and unlock sooner which obviously causes more heat production and energy waste.
This may have been asked already but if you put 5.13s on a stock gladiator would it improve the mileage?
So higher final gear ratio = lower gear on the highway?
$4.33 hahahahahahahahaha
Poor bastards in California. SMH
In another video you said that you went to 4:88. Was that before or after the 5:13. Which did you feel was best for you with 37.
I have Jeep gladiator rubicon I need to gear ⚙️ my to set some 40inch tire for look good but I don’t use off-road what you recommend me to do ? Thanks
OMG I miss taco shop...lived in so cal for over 10 years...live in fl now...sure miss real taco shop food
an extra 1.3 mpg is within the margin of error, sorry, but not a significant difference. If you re-gear and spend more time in 8th gear, that is no different than having a lower ratio and spending all your time in 7th.
So why do on my stock Jeep Mojave do I get 16.7 mpg? 33 tires everything stock...
hell i just got 35s on my overland it has 373 it only gets 14mpg cause 7 n 8 gear are turds i wanna put 410 in it
Wow, you're paying over 4 bucks a gallon??? You Californians are nuts.

Wow that’s pretty good gas mileage for your truck. I only get 10.5 mpg in my CJ5 with an AMC 401 V8 with 33s. But she sure is fun to drive around and sounds awesome 😎
You stole my thunder. Was going to ask if you calibrated your spedo.
I notice the start stop when the power steering shuts off. By the way, do you have to program the computer with the new gear ratio?
Hey Brad great video, just wondering how long do you realistically think it will take the money saved by the improved mpg to pay for the parts and labor to re-gear? It's always those kinds of things that help me make decisions. Help out a new jeeper and member of the TR team by answering

Slick Rock ya, that’s why we added the data to the screen. We were also surprised but didn’t know that until the editing room.
Modest gain in mpg. Cannot use that as justification to regear but other benefits still make it a worthwhile mod. 👍
Good info I can use as ammunition when I need to upgrade gears. I have JKUR with 3.73 running 35's. I don't know anything different as this my first Wrangler and it's the way it came.
Now to decide what gears? Do you think the 4.56 0r 4.88 will have a negative impact on freeway mileage?
Mark Jongsma 4.56 is a pretty popular swap with 35’s. If you are still looking for mileage then stay on the 4.27 side of gearing. If you want extreme crawler gears go 4.88
I just traded a 2020 wrangler on 35's with a 4cyl, to a 2022 gladiator, and I hate everything about the gladiator, it sucks in every category. Power 👎load capacity 👎, off road capability, dry storage 👎. They claim it can tow 7000, it can't tow itself, (completely stock oem 33" tires fully inflated) 7gear all the way back from Arkansas to Minnesota 72 mph average mpg 15.4. With a light load and tonneau cover, no rack or external gear.I absolutely abhor the gladiator. Most impractical 💩 I can possibly imagine. It doesn't do one thing even average let alone above. For a $60000 Rubicon trim, it even lacks in standard features, one still has to order up for accessory switches, led lights, bed outlet, trail rack system, front camera this was my worst vehicle decision ever ( I am 62 and have owned a gremlin).
Hey Jiggy what’s your take on the 2020 wrangler with the 4cyl, would you buy again?
Brad, great video. Did you update the Gladiator's computer with the new tire size and gear ratio?
Great video with some good conversation about all the things that can go into ruining or increasing your gas mileage. I think people don't realize how big a difference regearing can make when you jump more than a couple inches in tire size from factory. One of the first things I do to my vehicles now that get more than a small bump in tire height.
Ugh....those California gas prices are brutal! Come to Texas it's bouncing between $2.05 - $2.25 where I am.
Very brutal!
So this was already with the 38s? Makes sense that the MPG got better. Engine was very bogged down at higher gears and stayed at way lower gears.
awesome video brad!!

I know you said this isn't a scientific test but I was wondering, did you run a tuner to recalibrate the speedo/odo when you put the big tires on and again when you re-geared?
Sure did. I used a FlashCal to recalibrate the tire size and gears.
How do you put the gear indicator on display?
How do G2 gears compare to other brands like Yukon or Dana?
Family man all the gears are pretty much made the same place. Buy from your favorite retailer what they are comfortable setting up and who has the best warranty. I generally use G2 whenever I can cause 4wp has the best warranty.
Cool comparo. I swear I can see the needle dropping on my FJ (16-19 mpg, live in not-flat CO)
How did you get the gear to show in the display ?
Great video, thank you so much!
Just wondering when you bought the Jeep did you brake in the gears and change the fluid after 500 miles?
Dinky Dot yes. We had 2 full tanks of full on the gears before the second test.
My wrangler got 8mpg loaded down for a trip rofl
On the JL do you need to upgrade the brakes when you go to 38” tires? I believe they come with oversized brakes but not sure where an upgrade is needed? 37? 37?
Mats Ceder the JL brakes are way better than Jk but with the trucks added capacity we noticed some stopping distance increases with bigger tires. The bigger brakes are a margin of safety.
Good point.
