How to Buy a Healthy Puppy

- There are many pitfalls to avoid to help make sure you're new puppy is as healthy and happy as possible. But where is the best place to buy a puppy and make sure you are buying a healthy puppy?
Depending on what puppy you decide you want, there are a number of different options when it comes to finding out where the best place to buy a puppy is and at the same time making sure they are as healthy as possible. Broadly speaking these are:
- professional or regular breeder
- private home
- rescue center
- pet shop
The first big step is deciding what dog breed is best for your family. Do you want a pure bred dog or are you happy with a mixed breed, which may be healthier and cheaper in the long run? What size is best and will their temperament and character be a good match for your family and lifestyle. Are there any common conditions they might suffer from that you should be prepared for? How much might these cost in treatment and how might they affect your dogs future quality of life?
So how do you buy a healthy puppy? How do you decide where the best place is and which puppy is right for you. After all you want them to be as healthy as possible and not come with a long list of hidden conditions.
One of the first places to turn would be professional recommendations. This might be from your local veterinarian but it could also be from a respected dog trainer or a groomer. They may know of clients of theirs who are either breeders or who's pet dog is expecting a litter of puppies.
Personal recommendations from friends would be the next option to investigate. If someone you know and trust got a healthy puppy themselves from a breeder then you could reasonably expect the same. The alternative is that you might just find out who would be better to avoid buying a puppy from completely.
If both of these options fail to turn up your perfect healthy puppy then another option is to buy one from a registered breeder that is also a member of the Kennel Club or similar organisation. These organisations may run an assured or accredited breeding register that ensures a minimum standard is met by the breeder.
Never buy a puppy from an advert in the paper or internet ads without satisfying yourself of the puppies condition and upbringing in the same way you would with an established breeder. How do you know you are not supporting puppy mills or puppy farms. Also never just meet a "breeder" half way by the side of the road or in a service station.
You should think again about buying a puppy from a petshop. The vast majority of petshop puppies come from unethical puppy mills, they may come with serious existing diseases and they are often poorly socialized. It is only by refusing to buy puppies from these puppy mills that they will ever shut down. Otherwise they will keep making money and keep breeding puppies.

My final option is to actually consider in how to buy a puppy is to buy your puppy from a shelter or rescue center. These are dogs who find themselves abandoned. Often due to a relationship breakup, a house move, a new baby arriving. Abandoned through no fault of their own.

We made a really bad mistake, I bought a puppy from a what I now know was a puppy farm, they looked genuine and had all of the power work (they diddnt they were forged) they drugged her when we bought her and she looked somewhat healthy. I diddnt see the mother (I know I’m stupid, but I had been looking for a dog for so long that the rush of getting my own dog was just so exiting) we took her home and the next day she was dying and couldn’t breathe (we bought her as a “shih tzu x chihuhua” she was a parsons jack russle.) we rushed her to the vet and she was on a drip. After four weeks she was better (or so I thought) she was lovely and happy, but she slowly got sicker and sicker until last Monday (5th October 2020) she had to be put down due to tuberculosis (M Lepus)
I really miss poppy, and I don’t want anyone to have to go through this ever. As a young person I was stupid to fall for their tricks but puppy farms must be stopped, she wasn’t vaccinated, wormed or microchipped;she had the worst worm burdon that the vet had ever seen and phnumonia (sorry I can’t spell) and she had TB .please buy dogs responsibility. ( sorry for any spelling mistakes, I’m dyslexic and overall not very good at typing )
I'm very sorry that your pup had such a rough time. Unfortunately this is a very common story with puppy farm pups. I hope your next pup is healthier and you manage to take your time and go through all the best steps. Glad you brought up the issue with some breeders going for too extreme of certain traits. The German Shepherd here in the US is one example. :\ It seems some are starting to trend away from it a little bit which has meant slightly better hip health ratings, but I think they're still a long way from a more ideal structure although I don't know how much it'll all budge. I'm not really one to follow the German Shepherd show "community".
I had heard something about the Kennel Club putting something in place to discourage breeders of English Bulldogs, for example, from breeding for an overly squashed face. If that's still the case (haven't kept up with its progress), then I think that's a good thing though I would hope those breeders would want to keep in mind the potential quality of life and health of their dogs when they are breeding for the "latest trend" of trait, anyway. I'm happy when I see breeds that don't really have this issue.
I think in part it must be that people are starting to ask more questions about the health and sustainability of certain breeds. German shepherds definitely look so different compared to the past with a sloping back that causes serious problems. Some breeds or breeders are still in denial or feel they are under attack so don't admit change is needed. Have you seen my video about the world's ugliest dog? It discusses this a bit more too.

a visit with any potential puppy and asking plenty of questions should make things clearer. If everything is being done properly by both parties then it may be that the only difference is proven genetics or the ability to register with the Kennel Club for example
