Applecross Pass Full 12 Mile Route - Triumph Bonneville POV - The MOST CHALLENGING Road On The NC500

- Applecross to Tornapress via the famous Bealach Na Ba (or Applecross Pass) on a Triumph Bonneville T100 in the summer of 2022. This is the full, mostly uncut footage of this entire route, filmed in glorious 4K, with just the relaxing sounds of the bike to enjoy. I was pretty nervous about this section of the route before setting off and would watch riders tackle the pass on various UA-cam channels. This actually did help, so I decided to record my own experience to hopefully help other aspiring North Coast 500 riders get an idea of what to expect from Applecross Pass and also how to ride Applecross Pass on a motorcycle.
Riding Gear:
Shark Spartan Helmet
Akito Desert Evo Textile Jacket
Some cheap leather summer gloves from Amazon
Regular jeans and leather boots
Oxford T50 waterproof tail bag
Triumph leather side panniers
Camera Gear:
GoPro Hero 8 Black
ChinMount for Shark Spartan
Thanks for watching 😁
This is the best kind of biking video for me. Rider's viewpoint all the way through with ambient sound, including the engine and wind. No music, no chat. You also have an amazingly steady head whch keeps the camera position stable! Lovely riding, great view and on a fine motorcycle. I have a 2021 EFI T100 and it is absolutely wonderful to ride. Your T100 is very smart. Love the paint job.
Thank you mate, very kind words and very much appreciated 😊. I’m planning on making a lot more videos in this style, I’m yet to test out a new audio recorder I’ve bought which should provide really nice and clear engine audio. The mic on the GoPro is decent with a wind muffler but only up to about 45-50mph, then the wind noise is too over powering and backing music is unfortunately essential. I have to give some credit to the brilliant stabilisation of the camera, but I was thinking a lot about them lovely smooth shots 😁. Very noice, the finest motorcycles in the land. Yeah I don’t see many on the road with this paint scheme, which I like. Thanks again pal, ride safe 👍🏻
Nice one! sat in a chair watching it but tensing up as the bends and braking are coming up. Brilliant Thanks.
😂 white knuckle ride mate. Thanks a lot, much appreciated Simon 👍🏻.
Good bit of ridding brother i could hear some frantic gear changes i was gripping the sofa with the cheeks
of me arse . It is indeed a fantastic pass and came over great in the video :)
😂😂 thanks Doc. I was pretty tense at 1st but really rather enjoyed it once I got going. Brilliant, that’s what I was hoping. A clear sky day would have been quality but all the more reason to go do it again.
Great video, it really is an awesome road to ride 👍
Thank you mate 😊. Aye It’s something alright
What a great scenic ride! And some good dirt practice too! I wish I could find trails like that to ride more often!
It’s a pretty epic road. The whole route is actually tarmac, just in varying stages of disintegration. Absolutely fine to ride on though 👍🏻
Still looks like how we drove in june. % bikers from the Netherlands on a 6 day trip through Scotland. What an amazing country and what a friendly people! Defenitly coming back to see more! We drove it the other way round...
Nice one Mate 👍🏻, it was great to see Bikers from all over Europe up there. Totally agree, my 5 day trip wasn’t enough 😂. I’m planning doing it they way round you did but on my old Bandit next time. Thanks Peter 👍🏻
Cracking vido I did that with my son in July but the other way round.
Thanks Ralph 👍🏻. Ah nice one, My Dad wants to come next time I do it. I’ll be doing the other way round next time too, might take my other bike as well.
I love the video, is the kind of roads and landscapes I really like. Love the bike too
Thank you mate, much appreciated 👍🏻😊
Very good, I love that road both directions, first did it in 1990 in those days absolutely single track with few single car passing places and no armco or run out at the hairpins. Keep going back till you get it in sunshine a mate did it 12 times before he saw the views from the top. I've done it in everything from glorious sunshone to fog and snow, even climbed the radio mast just after it'd been installed before they put the gates up, rode up to it.
Anyway thanks for the memory will be back next May bank holiday. Cheers Aitch
Thanks Aitch, much appreciated mate 👍🏻. Was it was popular with bikers back in the 90’s? Sounds like it would have been a scream anyway. I will do mate, I’m going to do another video from the Alston side up on the old Bandit. Unreal, you’re a braver man than I, I’m not too keen on heights 😂. You’re welcome mate, thanks for watching and the comment. I may see you up there some time 😁. Ride safe.
@@GLoveMoto In the early 90's it had been posted in MCN with the loop to Torriden, Kinlochewe and Loch Carron so did on a days ride from Fort Augustus with the Mrs on CBR1000 and full set of panniers, got back early evening in pouring rain but the drop down into Speen bridge was brilliant no traffic anf bike gripping like mad.
Alston's good, there's a couple of interesting roads that link each other over the moors going to Middleton or Stanhope. Enjoy
Yeah I totally didn’t realise it was the Applecross video I was responding to a comment on haha. Still truth though, I’m planning on doing the NC500 clockwise on the old Bandit 😁. Yes I hear there’s a really nice right from Alston down to devils bridge. I’ll be giving that a blast one day soon. Thanks again 👍🏻
I've been over that road a few times on different bikes. We've got friends who live nearby, and it's always a thrill riding up and down there.
That's me subscribed. 👍
Oh nice, I’d love to live up there and have all that landscape on the door step. I’m planning on doing the nc500 route clockwise on my old Bandit some day. I had a brilliant time. Thanks a lot buddy, much appreciated 😁👍🏻.
I enjoyed the commentary throughout the video! And what a beautiful ride that was. Thanks for sharing mate. New subscriber here 😎
Thank you mate. Very much appreciated 😁.
Very nice ride over Apple cross shame it was cloudy the views are amazing there that’s my local ride every 3/4th week in April I go next April 2023 camping up there mull isle Skye then up and around saves about £5-£600 in hotels and B&B’s The reason I go in April it beats the midgets 90% of that time you get good weather I’ve subscribed to you buddy 👍👍🙏
Thank you mate. I agree, I would have loved to have seen the views on a nice clear, sunny day. All the more reason to revisit the place though 😁. Good thinking, I went in mid August and the Midges were ruthless. I’m definitely going to visit Isle of Skye someday. The Highlands are an incredible park of the country. Much appreciated pal 👍🏻.
You're spot on Derek!
Any time round about the Easter weekend is usually warm and dry for some reason up north.
We've got mates who live just this side of the Skye Bridge and we visit them at Easter most years.
It'd be good to meet up and say hello if you like.
I'll be on Father Brown, the classic 350. 👍
@@the.just.able.biker67 hi cheers for that the last week in April I’m going so has time gets nearer give me a shout I’m going on the scram 411 and my is on his meteor 350 be nice to meet up 👍👍🙏
@@the.just.able.biker67 just subscribed to you 👍👍
@@SOLOMOTOUK
Many thanks 👍
And I definitely will give you a shout nearer the time.
Great scenes , Been up and filmed on the sporty days , special part of the world. Great vid mate subbed .
Thank you pal, how did the Sportster feel on them hairpins? It’s awesome in the true sense of the word. I’m going to do the route again but clockwise, probably on the old Bandit next time too. Much appreciated mate, I subbed you too, same time I commented on one your recent videos. Keep up the good work 👍🏻.
@@GLoveMoto ..When you return, pick a day with good viz at the top - the views back across to the Cuillins on Skye are really worth seeing. Shame you were up in the clouds this time. Anyway, thanks for posting this, enjoyed it. Fabulous part of the world.
Yeah definitely mate, I didn’t even stop at the top the visibility was so poor. I did think the tops of the mountains disappearing into the cloud cover looked pretty cool on the decent mind. Thank you pal, I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s a spectacular place.
Awesome vid mate, views and road are stunning, hopefully i can make it up there next year on a holiday
Thanks mate, very much appreciated. Fingers crossed for you, hopefully some nice warm weather too 😁
Did this in August on my Harley..was sure fun!
August was when I was up there too. Early afternoon of the 11th more specifically. I also passed a group of bikers on Harley’s pulled over just before Applecross village. We may have crossed paths. I bet it was mate, Noice 😁.
Great video, most enjoyable. Me and the wife rode the NC500, for our honeymoon, by Moto Guzzi Clifornia last year in September. My Bonneville would have been more suitable!
Thanks Nigel, much appreciated 👍🏻. Sounds like a belter of a honeymoon mate. Mm, perhaps, all the more reason to head back that way on the Bonnie I’d say 😁.
On my list for next year.
It’s a cracker mate. Enjoy 👍🏻
Nice ride, will have to try and get up that way sometime, you handled it perfectly.
Definitely do mate, it’s a pretty spectacular road. Thanks a lot 👍🏻 I was pleasantly surprised how well the bonneville handled it to be honest.
@@GLoveMoto i have the same bike only mines a 2005 goes really well handles all the hills here in North Wales
Oh nice one pal, I’m totally in love with mine. I bet they’re some nice roads, I need to take a road trip round Wales someday.
Great vid, enjoyed the commentary - if time permitted, a down and back for a different perspective would be sweet. Nice riding!
Thank you ☺️ it would be, I’m going to do the trip again the opposite way round someday on my other bike so it’ll come in time 😁. Thanks again 👍🏻
I went for this road in 2006 with a bmw 1150 rt. Maybe again with the triumph. Grtz from the Netherlands
Oh nice, I’m wanting to do it again but maybe on the Suzuki Bandit next time. Thank you very much 👍🏻
The day i rode outrider to a Japanese truck on a Japanese motorcycle; both as dependable as each other : )
Well, it's as reliable as a Jap
Like my 25 year old Suzuki Bandit, runs like a dream.
Last hairpin taken quite wide:) Nice ride!!
Would you believe me if I said it was a planned line to get close to the barrier for nice look down the valley :)?
@@GLoveMoto Absolutely, I did exactly the same;)
You’ll do for me 👍🏻
P.S Subscribed.
doing the nc500 in march next year, hows it compare to hardknott pass in terms of difficulty? Did that on a vfr800 and was not to bad in the dry although I wouldnt say easy either lol
I’ve not rode hardknott pass yet but it’s on the list. I would say the most challenging part of the NC500 would be the Applecross Pass but that wasn’t too bad if you’re ok with steep hairpins. I’ve got a video of the full thing on the channel if you want to see what it’s like 👍🏻. You’re going to love it though mates, there some awesome roads and even better views.
I've heard the local folk voted to have Applecross removed from official 500.......could be wrong though.
That’s the first I’ve heard of that to be honest 🤔
@@GLoveMoto
I read about it somewhere (cant remember where). The reason was that some of the local folk weren't happy the peninsula was being overun with campers and camper vans, and the amount of rubbish being left. I'm not sure whether there was an actual vote, or just a proposal to vote.
I've been a couple of times, quite a few years back now...... its a spectacular drive.....your clip reminded me how good it is.
Ahh, well there’s definitely signage saying caravans and motorhomes should go up there, maybe that’s it. Which is understandable given how narrow it is. Still doesn’t stop some folk mind. Thank you very much 😁, I think I got pretty lucky with the traffic and weather on the day. I want to go up the opposite way on the Bandit some day.
@@GLoveMoto
.......enjoy!!
A very challenging road in bad weather conditions, made worse for the rider on a naked bike🥴
I bet it can get pretty dicey at times. The naked bike didn’t really bother me too much if I’m honest. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
