This might be the closest we ever get to a real life Truman Show. So bizarre and absurd with some very real and emotional moments. I need to watch it again before calling it a masterpiece but there is definitely nothing like it.
This dogshit of a show had no plot or purpose. It was the cringiest show ever.
But it’s like if Truman was also the director.

Jury Duty
When people are around cameras, its not reality anymore, but the moment with the kid where he was enjoying having a dad was real, that is the biggest catalyst of the show, a real moment created artificialy. Genius show and its both funny and sad, its what life is.

Nathan is this generation's Andy Kaufman. He creates things where reality and comedy are blurred and it's beautiful.
I was delighted by the way the actors and actresses responded to their performances at the end of the Fielder Method. They seemed so proud of themselves. It might have actually helped them in a way no other method could. There is always some brilliance to Nathan's absurdism.

I can't figure out why Angela liked him. Just the good looks? She's has just as wacky ideas as he does? Weird match.

I think some of his best moments of character were during episode 1, 4, and 6. The moment with Nathan admitting to Kor that he made him cheat without his knowledge and just the actor's reaction, then we pan to the real Kor and Nathan's words avert just like Kor had wanted to do if things went south that night. Why lose 2 things when you can just lose 1? So he tells kor he's a great guy instead. I broke down in tears at this scene. Not to mention, Imagination started playing right after. The whole Kor comparing him to Willy Wonka. It was chef kiss. Fielder Method speaks for itself. But, the 6th episode was the real dagger in my heart. Seeing Nathan's reactions to being called Daddy and having to tell him he isn't, but some of the lines that poor child said broke my heart. He really connected with Nathan. I will say I didn't like the ending bit with him rehearsing said interaction, but I see why he did it. Overall I was so happy to hear Nathan got renewed for season 2. I agree, best news we got out of this shit storm WB is brewing x.x

That part made me ugly cry both times I watched it.
That part would’ve killed me before becoming a father but now it just obliterates.
K. Todd Freeman plays Kor and someone tell me why that guy doesn't deserve an Emmy (or whatever the TV acting awards are) because that was.. whewwww holeeee shlt what did I just go through watching.
Nathan folds reality onto itself over and over again until he has a layered lasagna of reality and artifice. It's amazing. I was stoned when i saw a few episodes of this show and completely lost my mind it was great
I think the conceit is Nathan playing a character, he's making a reality show, but he's playing a character inside this, he's surrounding his character with real people, and creating dramatic situations by manipulating this reality.
The exploitation of the rehearsal is his character, the idea is that this character is making this show.
it became such a mash up of real people to actors to background actor to real people being a character playing himself.. it's genius. no longer we even know what is real or fake.. realities within realities within scripts its insane lol
I think there is something to say about the exploitative nature of the show, but that is just what happens in the context of documenting real people. I think what makes people uncomfortable is the social engineering Nathan engages in. Obviously the plot necessitated Angela leaving the show, it contributes to the character arc of Nathan progressively turning the scenario into a self fulfilling fantasy of fatherhood. The point is that none of this is for Angela, she is stuck in Nathan’s own fantasy, a world of pure imagination. She was in a way forced to quit the show through sly deception and a growing understanding that she was a pawn to Nathan’s desires. What I love about the show is that it is self aware enough to explore all of this at an honest capacity

Well said. I love how hes transparent about the very things people are critical of. He scripted a scene with an actor playing angela where she literally calls him out on his shit. Then ends the show as him playing the role of remy’s mother taking responsibility for what she signed her son up for. It’s incredible. What people should understand is that this kind of manipulation and these issues with child actors, these power dynamics between director and actors, they happen on real movie sets and in reality tv, but we don’t see it bc its all done behind the scenes. Nathan is doing it in front of our faces and shining a big spotlight on it.
I kept saying this to people, but The Rehearsal is genius and so is Nathen Fielder. I watched The Rehearsal when it came out and it brought me to watch the whole series of Nathen For You and its amazing. Nathen takes the extra step for everything and thinks outside of the box for everything, he'll take a simple task with a simple solution and flip it upside down and think of something I cant even comprehend, I truly think hes the smartest man in the world, its amazing how much he does for these simple little things. He pushes himself for everything no matter what it is.
Nathan is soooo underrated, this man is a Genius and he creates comedic masterpieces!
So, I feel like for the majority of the show, we see Angela thru Nathan's perspective. We see her seemingly unfazed nature in these ridiculous scenarios, we see her intense feelings on faith, almost as a caricature of the typical Bible thumper, and we see how she seems to drop the act when Nathan is not around and Nathan even talks about how it seems she doesn't care in his vision. But then the Remy situation happens, and all those moments where Angela breaks character pop into my head. Angela worked with Remy as well, but she seemed to make sure that she knew the actual people behind the acting. And with the silly but fine detail things like the mail, I think back to when she said she had little to no direction given to her. That makes me feel like maybe Nathan never told her things like, pick up the mail because that's part of it, don't break character even when I'm not there. And to make me feel a little more sympathy for Angela, despite me not relating to much to her otherwise, Nathan did kind of take her rehearsal from her. The experience she was supposed to have then had to fit Nathan suddenly, which would be fine, but Nathan made some pretty big changes when the teenager came around. And Angela even agreed to go along with it, despite revealing later on that she really wanted to continue the 0 to 18 parent rehearsal. I'm not saying Angela is perfect or free from criticism, but I still don't know enough about how much Nathan actually couched her on how to navigate this whole rehearsal, or even if he ever told her that they'd be figuring it out as they go, together. I see the problems with Angela, but the last episode really made it clear that Nathan was also handling a lot of these situations poorly. It made for excellent, and engaging television, but I can still point out his faults. Especially when the last episode seems to be Nathan doing just that. He finally broke the facade when he realized he faltered or went to far I respect that. But yea, Angela may be a Jesus freak, but even Nathan realized he wasn't the best director for her.

My number one takeaway from the show is that Angela is one of the most horrible people I've ever witnessed. Maybe Nathan didn't handle everything well; maybe he set her up to fail. Regardless, her sense of entitlement, her zealotry, and her narcissism were sickening. I know people like her are broken and ridiculing someone so pathetic is the definition of "punching down," but they are constantly taking and never giving.
I'm assuming it was Nathan's plan from the start to gradually make the show be about him. The #1 takeaway from Nathan For You is that the people he's "helping" are only tools for his madness.

What I like about Nathan fielders shows is that it's not that it's scripted. It more feels like he personally scripts them with real people by finding ways to push the narrative he wants. It's really clever
it is really genius. it is way more scripted but in such a way its hard to even believe it's scripted.
The Rehearsal is Nathan Fielder's sandbox. How or why anyone wouldn't want to play with Nathan in his sandbox is beyond me. Angela will always be an anomaly in my eyes. Then again, Robbin left after like one night, so at least she tried I guess.
Anything Nathan Fielder touches is gold. I can’t wait for the second season.
This was really well done, a very informative breakdown of what makes Nathan and The Rehearsal great with some subtle humor mixed in, but never too over the top or annoying like some other channels can be with it. Look forward to seeing what more you do from here
It really is a masterpiece. It should come with a warning that this series may do your head inside-out so be forewarned.

I just binged the entire 6 episodes in one sitting…there were things I liked and disliked, but I could not stop watching. I laughed more in Nathan for you, but laughed harder in The Rehearsal. Can’t wait for another season to see what he does.

Honestly, I have to assume binging it couldn’t possibly elicit the same reactions. Having to sit with each episode week to week made the show more emotionally fluid (like watching certain parts the first time with my jaw dropped and then watching them a second time and cracking up) because I had time to digest between each one.
nathan for you is a lot funnier imo. but the rehearsal is just amazing.

I don’t know how I just discovered Nathan Fielder, but he’s a genius in my book. The Rehearsal had me going what the hell am I watching, fascinated. And then I watched all of Nathan for You, and even old Nathan on your side YT clips. That adds a lot of context of how we got here. And it’s still fascinating. I’m hooked and here to see where he takes us in the future.

I had no idea who this man was I never heard of him nor seen anything from him. I saw the first episode of the rehearsal and was amazed at the level of detail that went into this project. I watched the next couple of episodes which were also very well done. It was the final episode that really and truly blew my mind. Not so much because of the relationship he had in the episode but for how he continued even afterwards and the results of it. It's hard for me to imagine the second season being as good as the first one but I can guarantee that I will be watching.
Great video Andrew! The whole show is fascinating. One aspect I thought was very interesting is when does a child become an actor. When do they develop the ability to distinguish what the job of an actor is. I always wondered if they had an original plot for the show, and then it just took a drastic left turn with the consequences of meddling with a childs mind who grew up without a father came into play.
Your earnestness when Approaching this show is so cute and sweet and completely inert. This is a creation throughout… it’s both self aware and self investigative, it’s beauty is its ability to search inward while also viewing itself from the outside, Angela is a character in Nathan’s search

Ughhhh I've been dying to continue watching but here in Italy its kind of hard to access Nathan's material even on streaming websites, I've only seen the first episode and yesss I immediately thought of Caden Cotard's infinite play...Can't wait to see more! Also hope to see more content on the channel, maybe even talking about some Kaufman things while we're on topic, really like your editing and narration
I just finished my third viewing and came to youtube and found your video, great work and subbed. I think Nathan 100% punches down, the most extreme version of that in this particular show is when he basically BROKE the guy in the raising canes/inheritance episode. While re-watching it tonight I nearly was brought to tears. He seemed like a nice person that might have some substance abuse problems and they sent him directly into a simulated torture chamber. He quite literally just abruptly leaves the show and the entire time you could tell in the simulated 'Raising Canes' restaurant he was buckled on drugs and extremely anxious. This episode went to far for me personally and truly felt like torture. You could argue that it was ultimately a bomb, because the person just LEFT the show and sent Nathan on a wild goose chase to find him at a carnival (probably because hes so made at nathan he thinks hes a clown) to eat sweet treats to only have his phone die and never ever speak to him again. Great show but that one definitely had me feeling weird about all of this. It's one thing to toy with someone like from the first episode or the simulated mother, but you're playing with some real fire and psychological warfare on that canes dude. I still watched it because it is fascinating but the entire time I was crushed.
I want to follow up that the reason why the show is good outside of the obvious reasons is quite literally the 1st episode. Where he takes a subject and forces him to confront his greatest fear. And the show from that point just progresses to be more and more outrageous. It's a fantastic piece of work, the madness grows to the point of where you start questioning reality through out the show and I think that this is Nathans goal, this is HBO and a multi-million dollar production, they didn't just shoot this stuff and put it together randomly.
Need to tighten up your very clear talking points and misunderstanding, when you say things like I don't really understand Nathan nor do I care to look into it (despite the fact you just put together a 10min video based on him and his show) all while getting INSANELY introspective about it and follow that same exact sentence asking if we're watching a magic trick, tells everyone with half a brain that you are a A) Really into it or B) Regurgitating what you already saw others say about the show. Not down with that at all, the flow the logic all of it.

Nathan may be one of the most creative and unique comedians ever. He has and continues to do things that I've legitimately never seen on tv before. Thank God he uses his powers for funny imagine if he was a politician! We'd stand no chance
This show is so hard to put into words how absolutely amazing it is. Never has something so clever been created. I tried to explain the show to some friends that aren’t familiar with Nathan and I had to give up because there’s just no way of explaining the layers and detail that he puts into it

I watched the majority of Nathan for you after watching all of the rehearsal. You can tell through the seasons he was building to this. A big part of nathan for you is creating a rehearsal for the businesses.
I watched a show where the main comedian hired actors to play actors working a job to act more like the people who actually do those jobs.
nathan is the wizard of lonelyness. kinda like a weird god/magician

The way i see it, nathan uses the insane docu footage as a framing device for a story.
what's crazy is the one person that affected from this experience was the kid who had no father. and that triggered the final arc of Nathan.

1:37 i remember spotting this baby-swap scene in the trailer for The Rehearsal and realizing then and there that i was gonna love this tv show
This show was so brilliant I watched it like 4 times as I was showing everyone I know. But I won’t lie I suspected that Angela is an actress, Remi is the greatest actor kid of all time if his reaction wasn’t real.

I thought that too. A good start for season 2 would be showing how the first season was just a rehearsal for him doing the real thing in the second season. It would also be a good callback to the intro of the first episode.

I agree that The Rehearsal is an absolute MASTERPIECE! Anybody who enjoyed The Rehearsal, should really check out Caveh Zahedi’s “The Show about the Show”. One of the most vulnerable and honest pieces of filmmaking I have ever seen.

What’s interesting to me is how I was able to find the humor and meaning in every episode yet I mostly cannot articulate why I found certain things funny or meaningful or moving. Sure there were some obviously hilarious moments (eating cereal in the kitchen of the man he was pretending to be) but most of the time I found myself laughing out of sheer confusion and absurdity I was witnessing. Why was I so moved when he called himself ‘dad’ instead of ‘mom’ in the final episode’s monologue? Beats me. As I said at the time, you could devote an entire university course to the study of the Rehearsal and still not hit bottom.
I think I can sum up Nathan and how I view his mind and art by echoing 15 year old Adam sitting at the kitchen table:
“You’re a fucking disaster, my guy.”

I like that you get it. Nathans work is supposed to be questioned in ways. It wants us to not know whats real and what isn't. But some take it too seriously and have to dig into it... and figure it all out... and completely miss the point. Just enjoy it. Good video.

haven’t really been watching too many obscure shows lately, but my favorites recently are severance, GDT’s cabinet of curiosities, and smiling friends
I went into the show expecting it to be something along the lines of Nathan for you, but by the end of it I was having so many emotions I wouldn't consider it a comedy anymore. It is funny in how absurd it is, but it's so much more! It really is a masterpiece.
I've never experienced so many conflicting emotions at once. Definitely a masterpiece.

Genius show and truly unique. I just don't know if I'd go so far as to say that Fielder is unequivocally a good person and not messing people up. I don't know how we could really know that when the main source of information we have about him are his own shows. But that's also part of what makes the Rehearsal so mindbending. There's clearly an authentic Nathan who's writing the voiceover and editing the show, adding the messages we ultimately see in the finished product.
If the past few years of exposés of Hollywood has taught us anything it's that we should appreciate the art but don't idolize the artist. They're human and you never know what secrets they might have (Roiland being the latest example).
This show broke my brain. I mean, I don't have a clue about what I watched. Sometimes it's funny, other times touch you very deep. But in the end I don't think I've been prepared for that kind of show. It's like a mix between Truman's Show and Being John Malkovich. I'm not sure if I liked it or not, but I'm sure that I've enjoyed very much at certain points of the show.
There are no words. Watch this show. Watch it twice. I'm so uncomfortable. I've laughed so much. I'm sad.

Isn't it nice to watch something that somebody really want's to make because it lives inside his or her mind, instead of a company pumping out stuff to continue a brand.
EXACTLY THIS. Spot on. Brilliant show. Partly inception child abuse, partly insane introspection to the meaning of relationships writ large, part indebtment of reality tv, part... just nuts. I agree, it's an (admittedly uncomfortable) masterpiece.
I watched 2 youtube videos analysing the series before I managed to watch it. I thought it was great even though it became clear that more of the show is staged then he acknowledges within the narrative. It seems like some components of the show are natural but I'm guessing that even the subjects of those scenes have some idea that the purpose of their participation as presented within the show isn't their real purpose, they know they will be presented as part of a different storyline and the anxiety they are supposed to be working through isn't really an objective of the show.
When it's suggested that the trivia guy runs through so many different permutations of his situation, I feel quite sure they don't actually play through them all. They probably just replay a few different sections of it with different lines, while Nathan directs them from within the scene until he gets the reactions he needs.
When he does the acting class then pretends that he suddenly decides to get actors to play everyone so he can figure out how to teach the class, it would be very difficult to do that over night, especially if it wasn't a preplanned scene. They would actually need to find all the doubles for the original class then they would need to pull a script from the original class (not just the bits that were shown but the whole class) before getting the guy playing Nathan to learn all the lines and blocking in a very short time. It's delightfully absurd as he breaks down the 4th, 5th and 6th walls but that complexity cant be mocked up in a couple of days on a whim.
The changes he makes to the main story by getting a perfect replica of the house built as a set is a time consuming process that seems to magically pop up just because he said he did it.
When he finally realises that his co-parent isn't taking it seriously, he presents it as a surprise even though he's got a whole HBO tv crew working on the production and they would have told him ahead of time.
Then there are the really obvious comedic moments towards the end like where he gets adults to play the little kids.
I agree that he is a master at what he does. This is a very special show that requires a special kind of genius to accomplish.

The Rehearsal is one of very few pieces of art that I've seen where the purpose of the art was to be art, not just to make money.
I agree this show was perhaps one of the most intriguing things I’ve ever watched. But I challenge you to dig deeper into the reality of the show itself, analyze the literal of the show, then the levels of analogy and visual tricks, the degree to which the show tries to engage the actors in belief, and the degree to which the filming engages the audience in belief. The questions that follow are worth thinking about.
I really want to get into this show. Ive seen a lot of his show "Nathan for you" and Im having the same issue with this show as I had with that. I really like what Im seeing, but have trouble watching it for more than 10 or so minutes. Its really difficult to explain, there is like a second hand cringe that I feel while watching which is almost overwhelming. I become really uncomfortable, then shut it off and watch something else.
I love Nathan Fielder. He makes me extremely uncomfortable but in a good way. He's fascinating to watch.
