At first, I thought it was cool. You get paid for walking in and out of an elevator every day. Then came the realization that the other side of that elevator is unending slavery.
I wonder what the feeling of time passing is meant to be for outies when they go in. Like, seconds?
@Nohandleentered could be less than that. Go in and then feel tired like you've worked all day. The innies explained it like the opposite. Step in the elevator at the end of the day and you come right back out feeling energized like you got a good night's sleep.
Also, you may be able to separate the personality and the memories, but trauma damages a different part of your brain. Being enslaved and tortured will ABSOLUTELY still affect you
@@clutch2827i think one of them tell Helly to try to enjoy the effects of sleep since they dont get to, so yeah its an instanteous transition.
@@MrTuas yes, they do not even get the escape of dreaming.
The show captures and explains the irony of how I have experienced being happy at jobs I have hated because I am cut off from the forces that sent me there.
The innies are trapped physically and superficially but the outies are trapped emotionally and profoundly. It makes sense that a version of themselves "optimised" for productivity is also more revolutionary and willing to resist the oppression they both suffer.
Word is that production on Severance was really cheap because they just filmed it inside Apple headquarters.
props the clothing to the office layout the melon and a 90sishfeel idk one of my top 5 tv shows rn up with seinfeld (completely. different) but episode after episode is better and better
Excellent overview and insights. One of my most favorite show seasons ever. Adam Scott's portrayal of Mark was so devastating, and much I could/can identify with. As you mention, Ben Stiller, and the amazing supporting cast and writing ... what a show.
Thanks for this video Andrew and for your honesty and vulnerability in sharing your personal experience with sadness, angst and longing in this life. Glad you are here watching with us and I for one am definitely cheering you on!
I really liked that Adam Scotts character wasn't perfect. He could be a coward. He had a tendency to drink to excess, and to say ugly things when he does. It was refreshing
Excellent video and what an intuitive way to introduce it. Your aesthetic definitely gelled w/ Severance's vibe
You have an amazing talent for voice over. I truly enjoyed watching this and your commentary on one of my favorite shows. Please continue producing these the world needs more of these and less TikTok dances!
I’ve watched every single theory and video essay on this show. This is my favorite.
Side note: Your outie has great thumbnail and video editing skills 📂
Oh my god dude. This was like... Holy cow dude you have such a talent. This brought me insight into a show I thought I'd already understood. Excellent stuff.
Beautiful video essay about an incredible show
As if the raincloud he has been following has started to dissipate... What an utterly lovely description. Thank you
Beautiful essay man, I've been waiting for season two since 22 when the 1st season ended so impatiently waiting
That was a great video - thanks! There is an interview with Dan Erickson where he talks about how Ben Stiller recognized that the core of the Mark character, and the core of the show, is pain, sadness, and loss. And how Ben then guided the show away from the surreal Terry Gilliam type script into the Severance we know and love.
They also say that Severance is a very INTP/INFP show, and your closing thoughts are very similar to what is discussed in "The Productive INTP" book by Paul Peters. I'm not sure if Dan is an INTP or ENTP, but the influence of INFP Ben ensures that the show is very Introvert oriented.
Severance is in scifi like Banshee was in crime/action. a whole new level, a paradigm shift. Masterpiece. a non plus ultra
This video was an absolute delight to watch. You’re incredible at conveying emotion through your voice. Subcribbled.
What they do in the company reminds me a lot of the "End of the World" part of Haruki Murakami's Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World. In fact, the whole setting of the show could be described as inspired by the novel.
This is an absolutely wonderful video. A rare gem that I will come back to when I am feeling writers block, the eloquence makes me absolutely spiteful. I will write and create because of it. Thank you.
This was amazing and such a breath of fresh air in the content created on this platform
what a wonderful video and the music pairing is excellent. the whole tone of this video felt so consistent with the show
You can never stop trying, that's the purpose of life. Thank you for such a thought provoking and intimate analysis of Severance. Much like with you, the show left me pondering similar life questions. How would I manage if I lost my wife like Mark S? I would be absolutely irreparably broken. My heart would be shattering into an infinite amount of pieces. How would others see me? As raw and as transparent as I could possibly be, which is how I live now. That isn't always the best for everyone's ears. But pure human emotion cannot be ignored. I connected with Mark's character because I too have experienced loss in many ways. The one thing I have learned in the process and during the journey; is that you can never stop trying, that's the purpose of life. Once we stop trying, we die.
The music in this video is *chef's kiss.❤
I love when folks put some of their own lives into their videos. Can't wait to watch more of you!
Severance is one of those shows where you think you understand the premise but it takes you to its last 2 episodes to really understand the implications of such a life.
I love your video essays! So elegant and insightful. And raw.
Perfect choice of music
If real, I'd choose not to sever, despite everything that I've been through. When you're sticking out a difficult shift at work, knowing what you have at home, who you are, what you are, is the ultimate carrot on a stick no company could hope to replace. Sacrificing that knowledge ultimately leads to rediscovering it. You can't scoop out your soul and still expect to function just the same.
This felt like you were talking about me and my life. What a needed gut punch, thank you.
Man, this was my first time watching one of your videos and I happened to click on it while trying to push back a little bit against a sudden mood swing (and there are a few factors I can try and pinpoint as the cause for it), but the soothing music and the pacing of your narration made all of that just wash over me. And I'm really grateful that things shifted a little during and after watching it. Thank you, Andrew! You have a new fan. I'll be checking your work and your upcoming videos. Cheers!
Great video. What I found fascinating about this series was its take that a same subconscious can give rise to totally different personalities and drives...
Truly nature vs nurture
Great video! Always a pleasure to dive back into Severance. Watched it only a few months ago, and now I can't way for the season 2. I loved the Lost vibe with all those mysteries.
this intro was everything
Instant sub, this video was very well done in everything from the writing to the editing.
dear andrew, your video has made me feel Something.
the wiring in my brain is all torn up so i can't tell you what, but i feel something in my chest. an Emotion.
i'm in the place you said anything would be better than in your intro. no plans, no drive - just waiting, like you said. maybe that resonated with me?
i don't know; i can't place it. i'm glad you stirred something inside me, though.
i'm sorry if my comment is a little vague and scatterbrained, i think it's the best i can do. i hope you're having a nice week; i'll try to remember you so i can cheer you on in the future.
would love to see a joe pera talks with you video from you seems right up your alley
Oh now that’s a good idea
This is an incredibly well made video
Stumbled upon your channel with this video and saw you also did one on Master of None. Hope I'm just in time for your comeback! Keepthe great videos comming!
Shut up! I'm not tearing up... Amazing video!
I wonder if we'll find out what they do on those computers - are we being shown what's on their screens as they see it or how it really is? Is it something horrific? Is it something so abhorrent that it has be hidden behind weird numbers? So awful that you have to be 'severed' to do the work, without it destroying who you are on the outside?
I like the theory that they're literally doing nothing, the product that theyre selling is themselves. Lumon wants to show that they can make severed employees work diligently on something absolutely meaningless.
@@MrTuasalso kinda reflects that there is no intrinsic value to a lot of the work people are forced to do in an economic system revolving around profit maximizing
Absolutely magnificent and gorgeous video essay, thank you so much.
May I ask what music that is you're playing in the background?
After rewatch I agree they did not answer enough questions for it being a full season, but this show is absolutely incredible. I love everything about it and I hope season 2 is good 🤞🏼
Beautifully crafted video essay 🙇🏽♀️🙌🏽
Very nervous for the production of season 2and all the random news of interruptions and disagreements, etc
Beautiful and meditative, thank you!
Outstanding video!

Your writing is so beautiful
That was really good. Thank you.
this is an amazing video
InCREDible video !
this video fits PERFECTLY on my ultrawide monitor in fullscreen lmao. this aspect ratio is so rare for youtube
It fits on my samsung galaxy zoom to fill full screen perfectly too :D
I’m going to watch this, thank you!!
Reminds me of Cary Jo Fukunaga's Maniac
I wondered why Dylan would take a job like this when he has a kid, but I’m wondering now if he’s a single parent and it’s the only way he can provide for his kid, or alternatively, he doesn’t have full custody of his kid so maybe the job makes waiting for the next visit easier.
great essay :)
AMAZING video!!!
looking forward to season 2
I cheer you on Andrew
incredible
A beautiful video...

You are a gem
I need season 2 so bad

Living in your parents basement is the worst thing you can imagine?! Wow. Get some perspective man.
The goats were too much tho - if you make it too weird it just gets silly.
why do the good video essayist always have few videos? this video is very dear to me. thank you for making this.
