I was hoping to see a comment like this, because I wondered the same thing. It's not a proper control group if you are changing what they're practicing altogether, you should only change the component being tested, in this case the headband. The data as presented is effectively useless.

bingo! the study design is fundamentally flawed - its result is predictable and shows nothing about the muse headband’s efficacy. I think Cody doesn’t want to state this obvious fact because he is trying to sell products/services that build on the Muse product - why bite the hand that feeds him?

11:16 It's good that that is the #1 complaint on the list, as that was my #1 complaint as well. Because the device's software resets its baseline for every session, it fails to create a sense of progress. The official line is that whatever your current baseline is, the Muse is helping you get _even calmer_ -- but that feels more like just a cop-out for them to not develop a way of effectively showing progress. There is a difference between slowly climbing a mountain versus just feeling like Sisyphus for the sake of feeling like Sisyphus -- even if there is a pat on the head and some vague encouragement that mostly sounds like an excuse for them to not figure out how to do the thing that feels natural. Their latest sleep-band model is a great evolution of the hardware UX, but the software UX hasn't been doing it for me.

In in the study referenced to document the efficacy of muse as a mediation tool, the control was users meditating with the muse headband versus persons doing math exercises. I don't really find this a reliable study because the control should have been users meditating without the muse headband, otherwise this could just be re-proving the already heavily documented effects of meditation. This is effectively people meditating versus people not meditating.

Dr Rall, I have a question. Since the goal of sitting meditation is to be able to meditate all day while doing your usual activities, I am wondering what would happen if you wore the Muse headband all day? Would it be beneficial to use it that way to monitor yourself throughout the day so you can pin point what causes you stress and work on it?

    • @73JosieWales

NO, why would you think that? it is a passive data collector. it is the act of collecting the EEG data and seeing progress or regression and making changes to your meditation that creates change and improvement. This does nothing to improve your experience passively. it does not promote cross hemisphere activity like Holosync with Autofonics Affirmations by Centerpointe Research or Paraliminal meditation recordings by Learning Strategies.
I tried using the muse headband to track my progress with Holosync and Paraliminal meditation, however, Muse hardware is unreliable and several headbands destroyed themselves because they are cheap junk that Muse sells to suckers like you and me.

Just started doing non-linear neurofeedback at a practitioner locally. I was weary about these cheaper home models, this sounds nice. I wonder if there is a non-linear version without an activity to focus on. My practitioner likes the non-linear version as the brain can tell itself what to do, without telling you that you are distracted.

I think full-blown lucid dream technology is what should have the big dough thrown at it. I'm an old guy and have only had a few such dreams, but I can honestly say there's nothing that I'm aware of that is so naturally WONDERFUL! I'm not talking about the type that is simply being aware of one's self while dreaming, as those are nothing. I'm talking about the type where one finds themselves as a sphere of energy in an astounding world where one floats down an ocean shore while feeling the comfortable ambient air while enjoying the whole experience as being as real as real can be ... with ocean waves crashing over large borders as one such dream happened with me years. When you have THAT type of experience you leap out of bed with joy and a spring in the step, as you know there's waaay more to reality than the garbage *this* world keeps shoveling down our throats nearly nonstop.

I just got a muse. Day one I tried some conscious breathing and was scoring around 65 percent relaxed. Today I did the Shambhavi meditation from Sadhguru and scored 86 percent relaxed. I also had mire theta and delta wave amplitude than I did with just the breathing. My alpha waves are constantly my highest amplitude. I have been a daily meditator for about 6 years. I also did all of these with the sound off.

This video is worth gold and rubies! However I have few observations:
    1. Guided meditation is like an Auto pilot where you become a consumer to the person who guides your mind to a calm state. It can even happen with music.
    2. When you are meditating free from these devices, the state of calmness achieved is much more sustainable. You can feel it. Though your muse scores in a self-regulated meditation will be low but you will feel much more satisfied and the calmness is natural and not forced upon the brain.

This is driving me crazy cuz I’m studying for a very difficult competitive exam and this liability is dragging me down.
Only if I had a device that could detect when I’m daydreaming and mentally absent and could guide me, maybe a beep or a vibration or notification, and create real time analysis of how I zone out and other brain activity analysis, I’d pay big bucks for it and so would everyone with ADD/ADHD!!

I watched this video hoping for some facts on how accurate the headset actually measures . I would like to see some actual independent quality control studies comparing the results of a muse headset vs a medical grade EEG. The only thing I could find on a web search is that its close but if you move around even and flex muscles, even something like swallowing or an involuntary yawn etc. it throws off the muse readings. This whole thing seems like a bit of overpriced tech used to sell a guided meditation subscription. Yes it will help calm you but so will any other meditation regime practiced regularly .

I use it from time to time to have feedback on the level muse can give you. It's interesting that the headband knows when you are wondering and lost in thoughts but that's all. I have not used my muse for some time after reading from their staff that the app, which I felt was extremely well designed, was actually giving me feedback on what I'd call the change in my level of calm compared to that session's set point rather than any specific brain wave pattern. The community suggested a different app (muse monitor), but the length of sessions required for the data to normalize was tough given my schedule.

It's inconsistent, I'm an avid meditator, I know when I am doing a good session, sometimes with the device I can get 15-30 minutes of birds, then other times to spite my internal calmness, none, I know it's to do with the beginning calibration, this is a fault with the device.
Would I recommend it, no, I think the idea is good and I know, because of this channel and other sources, there are other systems on the market and more coming, maybe it would be better to hold out for one of them.

I know that University of Victoria Neuroscientist! I saw him give a talk here in Victoria British Columbia before the pandemic. He's why I am doing this research now watching this video. Yeah the device is legit. HOWEVER, you need to ask WHY you are meditating in the first place to then ask whether this device helps with meditation. Are you meditating just to get good at a particular meditation? Most people would say No. Most people meditate so that they can achieve an objective. Sleep better. Concentrate better. Achieve more balance and equanimity. Better mental health. If you use the Muse, does that help you achieve these objectives or does it just help in the way an Exo-Suite would help you lift weights when you are trying to get fit? If it's just like achieving a personal best on a marathon with steroids you are only cheating yourself. Many of the benefits from meditation are from the effort itself -- reducing the effort can defeat the whole point. So you need to get into the weeds to answer that question.

NO! This is not a medical device thats first. The second issue is that muse informs you only when you drop to alpha which for add person that has impaired brainwaves that is predominantly in theta and even delta waves and just some sporadic alpha hence your calibration would almost NEVER be accurate. This is not for add people and muse is not making water into gold so don't claim meditation or specifically muse device would cure everything.

In my case, feedback makes things worse. If I hear the loud "rain", it causes me stress which then makes me focus on the fact that I'm not meditating deeply, which then pulls me out of the meditation completely. I haven't decided if I like the Muse 2 headband yet since it seems to be really difficult to get a good, stable connection. But I know for sure that I hate the Muse meditation and feedback software.

I would STRONGLY disagree. it's impossible to hear the biofeedback sound and not to respond, and the response is subconscious, not conscious, so it is effortless, not effortful, so it is impossible to keep the muse from having its result. so as far as I am concerned, as a clinician myself, I think it is an excellent resource and the clinical evidence from people using it in the clinical setting supports my anecdotal findings using it with clients that it is excellent, it works, and people tend to get better faster who are using it. watch other interviews by cody rall an you'll get an education from a lot of respected persons on the value of this technology.. and it's worth saying that organizations like NASA and important healthcare organizations would not be using it and doing research with it if its results were not real.

    • @sootedninjas

@@utubengh1 still the person involved needs to be engage. monks have done it BUT they were require to meditate for hours on end. Can a average user do that? You are a clinician and you see results because your patient wants to change. But how of about those you DO NOT SEE vs the ones you do see. Essentially, what you see is already funneled. It is some what cherry picked already. Your patients wants a change for one reason or another. My point being it is NOT muse that make the change BUT the person within. You can achieved similar results without MUSE or any tracking device. Now if you want to see a Pro-Active device that can make change BUT still requires user engagement then I would prefer to spend my $300 to Omnipemf instead of Muse.
