HVAC on the screen and haptic touch controls on the steering wheel are a no go for me. They suck. I like Honda's HVAC and steering wheel buttons and knobs.
The way they have tuned the suspension to be softer is clever . I had a 330d a few years ago on 18’s and it handled better and far more progressively when it let go than on bigger 19’s.
The screens are fine IMO. The screens can be cumbersome to deal with, but I drive cars like this for the driving experience. The manual wasn't that great in the GTI and R either. Gearing too long and the OEM clutch had a numb engagement feel and couldn't hold any extra power modded...
Volkswagen, in their design arrogance still refuses to give potential customers [at least] a physical volume button on the Entertainment System... along with the lack of real HVAC controls. Stupid, or rather completely arrogant and dismissive of long-time customers -- and almost everyone I speak with regarding the matter -- especially what they now charge for what is still only a 4-cylinder vehicle. I really like much of the mk8 R and GTI. But little things keep me from purchasing... along with the ridiculous prices. I'll stick with my mk 7 GTI... I still get a thrill every time I drive it.
Better, but for the money I will just keep my modded MK7. With the mods I have done to it, it is still more powerful with better handling, braking, and IMO it looks better inside and out. Maybe if they start offering some real color choices and paint the front bumper. Where do these designers get the idea that people actually like all this black plastic on front bumpers, fenders, and elsewhere? It looks tacky and cheap, other than the actual grill, just paint it for god sake. I am not a fan of all that blacked out plastic on the front bumpers, reminds me of the previous Elantra N, and that thing is hideous. Fun, great value, but repulsive to look at, the refresh is an improvement, but it still needs work as well. Then there is the price, it's a good car, but not $50K-$60K good. I also blame the banking system giving absurd loans for cars to people who clearly cannot afford it. It's disgusting the way they pray upon these people, in the end it makes everything worse for everyone. No one should ever finance more than 30% of their annual income for a car. I see idiots making $70K driving around in $80K-$90K cars and trucks with little or no money down for 8-12 year loans at 20-25%. This is the artificial demand driving these idiotic prices, it is not going to end well.
Do you feel like the Variant is more comfortable than the Hatchback? I found the Hatchback almost undriveable on German highways except for the comfort setting - it's very twitchy and has quite a loud / rough ride.
They also changed the ecu map so the car is more responsive in the low revs on this 8.5 and added new software to the dsg gearbox which is way better than the mk8. Still prefer my fully specked pre gpf 7.5. though, based on looks, fit and finish. The mk8's drive and rides better over the 7.5
Loved driving this car. But wow, the new interior looks awful. I didn't like the old interior either, but mainly due to lack of physical buttons. At least the screen appeared well-integrated into the dash. This looks like they forgot about the screen and made a last minute decision to strap an iPad to the dash to make do. VW's interior design department has lost all sense of form and function. I am so happy that I decided to keep my Mk7.5. This went from bad to worse IMO. And still with haptic controls on the steering wheel. What the.....?
VW used to offer a coupe that was much better looking and offered a Corrado and cool cars in the US. Now they give us this 4 door granny looking bar of soap design. Really bad.
Why do people do auto reviews and put the camera on themselves instead of on the dash or some other aspect of the car while driving? 15 minutes of fame? Notice me, much? I don't get it. It's supposed to be an "auto" review... not an "auto reviewer" review!
My Cupra Born has those buttons, haptic but they do click, it touch sensitive things, terrible things! VW aren’t listening and the R button is a terrible excuse not to change it.
Welcoming changes to the overall let down that is the mk 8. But wheel cap is very tacky, and the haptic buttons on the steering wheel needs to go. I still think mk 7.5 was the goat of modern golfs.
My only gripe with the Golf R, S3, Cupra, A35 is that, they all cost around £50,000 (base model) and with that money you can get a F90 M5 Competition, G82 M4, G80 M3, 2019 MODEL E63, 2021 Range Rover Sport and 2021 MODEL C63... You get my point. Why are these little hatches so expensive for half the power and half the car (quality, driving features etc).
interior ergonomics may have not been fixed but i believe performance has somehow improved even MORE. dont get me wrong tho it sucks that theres no option for a manual anymore and the screens even bigger, but after seeing a few other vids i think people will be surprised at how much better this performs
I’m not thrilled with the lack of a manual, but I’d go DSG with the R anyway. Appearance wise I think it’s an improvement across the board from the MK8. It looks like the natural follow up to the MK7.5. I like the new screen to be honest.
Looks really cool, would prefer regular buttons on the steering wheel. And a round button close to the middle console to control the big screen additionally in case you don’t want to use touch.
Really not a fan of modern cars having these massive iPad screens slapped on the dash with no physical buttons
It doesn't help that the screen looks cheap af. Just look how big that black frame is and how much it is taking space.

13:05 the car pulls dangerously to the right on braking...
I can’t tell the difference to be honest
You need eye surgery
The current Golf 8 R looks much better
@@haroldjxmmiI totally disagree he is right look worst than current one and I drive a Golf 8 GTI...you actually need eye surgery go check the optician period
But no more stick….defeats the whole purpose of the car
Ugly wheels 😅
VW does a terrible job with wheels. Thins is they put the gorgeous wheels on the concepts. So somebody knows something about aggressive design.
God they had great wheels and changed them for those ugly pos
This needs a 3.2 Vr6 and a better interior....
The rims look like a cheap aftermarket and the screen look too big standing out like a sore thumb😅
All of them are weak which make the entire car look weak.
who wants eco mode on a Golf R
Me when driving with my mom :'D
Or an automatic
I like the haptik controls and the touch screen on my GTI mk8.
The screens are fine IMO. The screens can be cumbersome to deal with, but I drive cars like this for the driving experience. The manual wasn't that great in the GTI and R either. Gearing too long and the OEM clutch had a numb engagement feel and couldn't hold any extra power modded...
awful interior , ridiculus info entertainment unit . they ruined GOLFR, seriously who wants a an large IPAD in a supposedly sport car
8.5 is a fail for me, 8 for the win
7.5 for the win
Volkswagen, in their design arrogance still refuses to give potential customers [at least] a physical volume button on the Entertainment System... along with the lack of real HVAC controls. Stupid, or rather completely arrogant and dismissive of long-time customers -- and almost everyone I speak with regarding the matter -- especially what they now charge for what is still only a 4-cylinder vehicle.
I really like much of the mk8 R and GTI. But little things keep me from purchasing... along with the ridiculous prices. I'll stick with my mk 7 GTI... I still get a thrill every time I drive it.
Excited to see so many people aren’t into it, hopefully makes it easier to find one w/o markup 🤞🏽
I was thinking the same thing lmao
I found the Hatchback almost undriveable on German highways except for the comfort setting - it's very twitchy and has quite a loud / rough ride.
screen makes the whole interior look cheap congrats VW on making the car unsafe, probably will never upgrade my mk7.5
Just like with the new BMWs that don't follow what the customers' want from the cars, I hope nobody will be buying this
VW used to offer a coupe that was much better looking and offered a Corrado and cool cars in the US.
I would prefer no screen at all, a basic stereo with a volume dial and a heater and air conditioning.
Is it just me or does cars get more and more ugly... Everything past 2018 is just 🤢 interior and exterior look so bad
My Cupra Born has those buttons, haptic but they do click, it touch sensitive things, terrible things! VW aren’t listening and the R button is a terrible excuse not to change it.
Am I the only one that finds it's incredibly annoying that they didn't spend an extra $20 and fit a bonnet strut?
WHERE'S THE STICK WITH NO COMPUTER THING ON DASHBOARD?! WHAT ABOUT US?! WHO GETS OUR MONEY?!^^
\O>
Welcoming changes to the overall let down that is the mk 8. But wheel cap is very tacky, and the haptic buttons on the steering wheel needs to go. I still think mk 7.5 was the goat of modern golfs.
100k euro for a GOLF!!!!!
Uk prices are a joke anyway just get what u want there
Amazing
The illuminated logo looks absolutely ridiculous. There should be an option to turn that trash off…
interior ergonomics may have not been fixed but i believe performance has somehow improved even MORE. dont get me wrong tho it sucks that theres no option for a manual anymore and the screens even bigger, but after seeing a few other vids i think people will be surprised at how much better this performs
And a round button close to the middle console to control the big screen additionally in case you don’t want to use touch.
is the regular golf r twitchier to drive at high speeds than the variant? In what sense are they different in that sense? Thanks!
Screen looks terrible from both front and behind it's to big car vw have made another bad design
mein lieblings golf. würde ich mir genauso sofort kaufen, wenn ich die kohle hätte. leider viel zu teuer:(
the facelift def made it prettier
wtf is that tv attached to the dash. really awful design. the front led strip is also a joke
Can't wait for golf 10r and its pricetag of 80k€!
