Hello, developer of Echo's Esker here. I appreciate your very honest and yet understanding review. Yes, I am an individual developer, not a team of developers, so Echo's Esker is a bit out of scope. As have been my past two projects. My hope is to really take my time with this project instead of rushing it like I have in the past, so it can one day be my first truly complete game. To address a few issues you bought up: You are correct in assuming that the darkness was not intended to play into the gameplay. It was a combination of a poor design decision (to prioritize atmosphere over function) and a limited understanding Unity's lighting system. After receiving similar feedback, I've changed newer versions of the project to offer more visibility. As for Echo not always catching lances and the enemies frequently loosing track of the player, this is largely due to a pathfinding issue that I've since had at least some success in correcting. Also, if you throw a wooden lance into a torch and Echo fetches it, she should bring it back with the tip on fire, so it can be thrown again to burn away webs (like the wall you clipped through) an to light those floating red orbs, causing them to explode. That's on me for not making it clear that you can do any of this. And finally, yes, a lot of the character's models and voices are meant to be placeholders. You are right that this was really meant to be more of a very early beta and not so much a demo, which I failed to make clear in my advertising. Perhaps if I can make some meaningful progress in the near future I may upload an updated demo to showcase some of the progress that has been made, but at this rate it will still be a few years at least before a full game comes out. Again, thank you for the in depth review, as well as for not simply bashing the project for its faults. I appreciate your balance of honesty and positivity. It means a lot!
Hi! You are welcome. Thanks for checking out what I had to say and responding. You have some cool ideas, I am curious to see what you will do with the project. If you ever need a playtester or something like that let me know. (I also develop games btw)
Love this series as always. I really liked the mechanics of Camera Obscura and Wars and Warriors Joan of Arc reminds me heavily of a really popular game some time ago with that same mechanic of commanding the entire battle in that overhead view that I can’t quite remember. Anyways, this was well worth the wait. Great job!
Yes, it is a shame, but it was interesting to take a look at it. And maybe the game will be improved in the future, then we may see Echo once again . . .
My favorite: Camera Obscura I am most intrigued, however, by Echo's Esker.... I feel like it could be much better and could use some extra hands on deck, but I understand why that might be difficult.... oh trust me, I understand well.
