When I first gravitated towards minimalism thanks to you Ryan and Matt one of the first things I did was I put my credit card in my safety deposit box. Because I used to pay for absolutely everything with my credit and debit card and that was one of the leading causes to my careless and major consumerism... once I got rid of my as I call them "disproportionately valued pieces of plastic" I found that I spent hardly any money when I forced myself to be almost entirely cash-based. I also sat down and crunch the numbers for what I grocery shopped for often and how much it cost by using the receipts that I had casually strewn in my car over the years..... when I go to the ATM I only take out as much cash as I need to buy what I'm going to buy in that moment.

Keeping one check in the wallet - I have honestly never thought to do that. I paused the video, went into my purse, tore a check out, and removed the checkbook from the purse. Wonderful!

I’m from England and ‘cheques’ (UK spelling) are almost obsolete. What do you need them for? Why are they still needed in the digital age? I’ve always wondered this.

Most landlords still require a check for rent payment! :) I recently moved apartments and had been using my checkbook frequently for those types of expenses.

Dan Whyles I live here in Canada and a lot of places require me to actually have cheques: school payments for my kids and most of my services prefer cheques over other payment ways (or they charge me if I use debit or credit).

I enjoy these types of posts!
I carry a teeny notebook and pen, lip balm, Altoids mini tin with aspirin and listerine strips, reading glasses, sunglasses, a reusable little folding bag, wallet, keys and phone. Sounds like a lot when it’s all typed up, but it fits in a small little purse.

I would avoid using carmex chapstick as it only dries your lips more like most chapsticks do. I found one that finally works by nuxe called reve de miel. ( get the pot not the stick )
I carry everything but the kitchen sink in my purse. I also do the same with my car that’s all neatly organized in my trunk . I barely am home and often from work I meet friends or have charity stuff . I have found this helps me be more productive and that’s ok . At home I have decluttered pretty well and am well maintained and extremely conscious of what I have or am bringing in

Working for the post office for 30 years I like that you encourage people to write letters and mail them. That used to be a normal thing. Now most young people come in the office and have know idea how to mail something. Not even how to properly address a letter. I could never fit all that in my pockets. I carry a handbag with a small wallet with a little cash, a few coins (if I'm parking somewhere I need to use them) 2 major credit cards, my license, medical marijuana license, medical card, AAA card, Target, Khols, and Penneys because you save money if you use them. A small cosmetic bag with a nail file, tampons, set of contacts, eye drops, small pill case with advil, Burts Bees chapstick, small kleenex, a few wet wipes. My keys, sunglasses, reading glasses, small Aveda hand lotion. Wow, I guess I carry a lot but I do use it all. When I travel I don't carry all the credit cards.

I tried to cut down to the absolute minimum of carry items on my person and it works great. I carry a bunch of stuff when I work but off work it’s just my Herschel wallet in my front right pocket along with my keys ( there’s only 2) a fob for the Fire department and a quiet carry bandit knife ( great knife doesn’t take up room ). Chap stick and cell phone in left front pocket. Ink pen and eye glasses rag in back pocket and my challenge coin floats around in different pockets but usually hangs out on the right side. Hope this was interesting. Really liked your documentary. Thanks

If I have a pocket, it's usually only my phone and work badge. I purposely bought a small purse so I would carry less too. Wallet, notebook and pen, keys, badge, phone, headphones, hair tie, and chapstick. Works well for me. Funny that I can be so minimalist with what I carry on my person, but my home certainly doesn't reflect that. Working on that bit.

I usually only carry my iPhone which has a wallet case and my keys. In the wallet case for my phone, I carry a credit card, debit card, and my driver’s license. I usually don’t carry cash since I prefer to pay on a card (it makes it easier to track my expenses. I also hate spare change, especially because in Canada we have loonies and toonies). Besides this, if my plans for the day call for it, I’ll carry earphones and a phone charger.
I’ve been using this system for awhile and have never come across a time where I needed to carry anything else. I like that there are very few things I carry so there are less things to lose or that I have to keep track of to prevent losing.

Hello, I find that now as I've decluttered so much (my goal was to be able to fit all personal items into 2 suitcases, And I've achieved that... omitting furniture or basic house necessities of course).
But I find now that I almost have an even greater attachment to the things I own? Because they are exactly my style, bring me a lot of joy, etc. The items I own are so well curated now that when I question myself about how I would feel losing everything... I would still be really upset. Does this make me a bad "minimalist" because I still am attached to my items? How do you relinquish this sort of hoarder mentality, even when the hoard is just a small selection of items?...

  • @MichaelKearsley

Usually I have my keys, LG Stylus 2, frequently foldup QWERTY wireless keyboard, usually a tissue of some sorts of other, wallet; If I'm wearing a sleeveless shirt or no shirt at all then I might have my phone in backpack or not be carrying it; If I'm wearing a fleece I sometimes even have an 8" Windows 10 tablet in my sidepocket, I recently got given an 8" Huwaei Android 7 tablet for my birthday so I could have one of those in fleece sidepockets, if I could fit a laptop in my pockets I would do, I don't like to go anywhere without a computer of some kind.
Frequently I carry a duster as well for wiping phone/tablet screens, sometimes I carry my glasses case with glasses in round, I'm myopic so sometimes I need them.
I like clothes with lots of pockets, zip pockets as well as large open pockets - things that can fit tablets in & paper maps & any documentation I may be carrying for an appointment, so I can just whip it out when needed.

For me it's a small/thin wallet in which I only have my driver's license, medicare card (Canadian), 1 debit and 1 credit card, my smartphone and my car/house/bike lock keys. I will often have a few more items including headphones, but wallet, phone, keys are the only items I carry with me 100% of the time. I have been considering a pocket knife too because that's something that I've been wishing I had on me a few times but have not reached the threshold of adding it to my ECC yet.

Great video, follower since your TEDx. I randomly dump my pockets and share on FB, fun to see what friends are carrying as well. Two questions for you, first is why would you be willing to carry a "business" credit card versus debit card since if the business is liquid you could spend your money rather than theirs, second is how your partner perceives these concepts or is she minimalist as well? My pockets tonight at work following a 2 week vacation only contain coin cup, wallet with ID, health and vehicle insurance cards, debit card and some cash ($27.00 to be exact). Clipped on belt loop is carabiner with home/work keys and my HD fob to get me in the wind.

I carry around way too much in my purse I'm sure. But I found all of it helpful at one time or another. The major things I make sure to have are: wallet (with money, credit & debit cards, medical cards, driver's license and car insurance card), extra hearing aid batteries, hearing aid storage pouch, packet of tissues, chapstick, Halls cough drops, emory board, pen, paper, and an eyeglass repair kit, prescription sunglasses and regular glasses. My keys are my SUV fob & key, hubby's truck fob & key, house keys to front and back door, boat ignition, boat cabin and boat trailer lock keys. I also have, I dunno, maybe 10 of those plastic rewards card things on my key ring. It used to be worse when I worked. I had to have the 4 master keys to my office and the training rooms. I apply Chapstick probably about 10 times a day, I probably never used it until I was about 18. Long since then and due to OCD I cannot be without it. I have had to go way out of my way more than once in my life when I realized that I had either lost, misplaced or forgot it. Other than that, nearly an identical "EDC" all the way down to the floss stick. I often use one of those black paper clamps, but that clip that you have looks pretty cool. Interesting. I keep condo keys in my right pocket, coins on the left and a hanky at the back. That's it. I like keeping it light in me.

In my pockets I carry my Smartphone, Space Wallet (Bills, ca. 6 cards), Keys, Headphones. I'd like to get rid of everything but the Smartphone but that will take some more time to become true to do anything just with one device...

No purse, no wallet, no keys. I just carry my phone in my pocket and occasionally a credit or debit card, ID, and keys. Typically my husband carries my ID in his phone case with his ID and a credit card and keys. Even less than the pro minimalist. :)

Before I get to work: Cellphone, drivers license, debit card, credit card, health services card, and keys to my apartment.
After I get to work: same as above, plus my work cellphone, and a chip on my shoulder.

Were you serious about the 15 supplements you take every day? I'm kinda curious about that. As far as I know it is such an American thing to take supplements at all. I know very few Germans who take vitamins etc. on a regular basis. Why is that? Can someone explain why Americans tend to supplement so many things and others don't seem to need that?

    • @ShadeMiller

More information about Josh and his supplements than you probably ever wanted to know: www.theminimalists.com/p138/
IMO, Americans are into supplements for a couple of reasons:
      1) The standard American diet is weak in actual nutrition, and most people would rather take a pill than clean up their eating.
      2) There's a massive industry built on selling these products to us, and lots of people buy into the advertising that it'll improve their lives. Supplements don't fall under the same regulations as legit pharmaceuticals here in the US, so companies can claim all kinds of nonsense without actually having to follow through on any of it.
      3) The American healthcare system is expensive and often difficult to access, so home remedies and do-it-yourselfing are often less expensive than trying to get an actual doctor to take a look at whatever your issue is.
