I have battled this concept most of my life. And I have tried to explain it for years to those who relentlessly ask "what do you want to do with your life?" Keep it simple. Give yourself permission to be human. More of us need to remember that. We don't have to fit ourselves into labelled boxes. Be curious. Add value. Try different things. Don't give up.
I am passionate about animals but I didn't turn it into a career. I had it as a side hustle for awhile, but I just enjoy doing it now and then. I work a normal job that has nothing to do with my passion but I am ok with that. I am very happy because I am stable and I have learned how to balance my life.
My late husband said it this way, "Get paid for what you like to do, but spend the rest of the time doing what you love." Minimalism frees up that "rest of the time." BTW, he would have LOVED you guys and your message! 😊 For instance, I love music. I love to play the guitar. I invested in lessons to become proficient. I don't get paid for it, but I could if I just practiced more, but I don't currently, and that's okay, because just an open organic jam session at the local pub is enough for me. 😊❤️🎸
Love this video. I spent most of my life worrying that I wouldn't find my one passion that I could make a career or that if I didn't I would be a failure somehow. I am 36 and fell into my current job just by doing service sector jobs with companies I felt I could stand behind. .. sometimes I was wrong but most of the time I took something from it anyway even if that was just narrowing my field of vision or connecting with the right people. Which has actually been the key to where I'm at. I have just been offered my dream job. If you'd asked me 10 yeas ago though this would not have been the job I cited. The rewards have come just by being myself and holding true to my internal compass and value system. Thanks for all your great insights. Keep writing. Keep sharing.
Interestingly enough, I find that those conversations still happen with people like me in middle age. So thank you for that. These were very helpful reminders.
I prefer your usual attitude, which is that what you do for work is in line with your values. Sure some people love digging, but for the most part most people who dig ditches aren't passionate about digging, but the work they do is meaningful--it helps other people and fills a need. And someone can take pride in that kind of work regardless of if it is something they "love" or just something they are capable of doing, pays the bills and helps other people.

Love how your partner is a dietitian and cooks & you refer to finding that balance in relation to finding ‘that’ recipe ~ nice work x feeling inspired when at the moment I’m feeling overwhelmed with our move as a family and our stuff
Finding you passion should start with asking yourself, "What Community you want to contribute?" and you need to visualize yourself into this community, if you can't see yourself into it there would be no direction, motivation or drive that won't give you a sense of purpose, you have to look for something else. Our beloved Minimalists duo found themselves contributing to people who have sense of longing for minimalism and peace of mind and that became their community.

I just applied to graduate school in an area that I was moderately passionate about and that is moderately related to my long-term passions. The specific areas directly related to my BIG passions do not have comprehensive graduate programs. There are only a few, and none are given by universities with good academic staff, curriculum or research opportunities. I was still debating whether I should have chosen a university with lesser opportunities. Now I can see that it is okay if I spend these two years in an area I am still passionate about and that is still related to my biggest passions, and go to workshops, seminars and certificate programs with good quality in the meantime. I may even end up learning more, and there is no risk of losing my motivation as a result of not feeling intellectually challenged in those specific but less successful programs.
Jenny Yakas - It is important to not increase your spending when earning more. Make a list in Excel and write down all your earnings, taxes and each thing you spent money on in the last month/regularly spend money on, calculate what is actually left at the end, then start reducing from there until you have enough left for savings or investments - or reduce your work time such that you can follow your hobbies and passions more :)
For Me it worked that way: I'm a pragmatic person. I do not buy stuff UNLESS I need them. You want to eat somthing? What do you have in fridge? get creative. You want new stuff? What stuff do you have, that you can arrange newly in your living space, clean up, maybe decorate with plants from your garden, that'll regrow in nature. Work with what you have and when you absolutely need something, buy the best version of it, that fits your need. If not? Save up your money for some time you need it, and trust me, that time wilm come
"Give yourself permission to simply enjoy & explore things outside the context of your professional life" Damnnnnnn this struck a chord since I've been exploiting only hobbies that are related to my E-shop and got to the point where I don't pursue any activity if I'm not gaining any money from it. What a terrible way of living :(
If you can’t turn your passion into a career then you’ve given up trying. As soon as you tell your brain you can’t do something it naturally stops looking for answers. If you say you will do it then your brain comes up with ways naturally. It’s a bit like when can’t think of a word and then a few hours later you’ve thought of the word, your brain was looking for the answer subconsciously!
Ah you are going on tour with the Ramsey team!? I love that radio show. Reminds me of my childhood. My dad always played it in the car :) I think I was always destined for an unconventional lifestyle/career but tried so hard to follow the path most taken. This year I am trying to go extreme. I will pursue what I thought was unobtainable and see what happens! Super excited to see more of these living room conversations (reminds me of the fireside chats ^^)

I can't afford to give up the job I have, which I hate, because I need to pay bills and support my family. But this job interferes with my life, the hours I work prevent me from doing some things I would like to do. I have applied for hundreds of jobs but my age (58) is against me. I will keep trying but know that I will have to continue in the job that I hate just to earn money to live but not have a life.
Thanks for uploading that. I've had a struggle because my job is not my #1 passion, still I love it. And these words helped me justifying my feelings for that situation. Question: Where do I start making the world a better place, especially when I live in a 1st world country where poverty and hunger are not a big deal?
You could always donate money, if you have the recources. There are sites that rank them acording to effectiveness (the Minimalists even donated money to the one ranked number one), the thing I am passionate about is Zero Waste. How do I let go of the anxiety of what other people think and say about me? It makes me feel like I’m never good enough and leads me to keep on making stupid purchase and financial decisions.
I've started letting go fairly recently. I think it's mainly about accepting that you are the only one that can decide who you should be. You shouldn't let other people dictate your actions, because they don't know any better than you. We are all doing what we can to get through life.
Everybody talks about their passion and how to go about turning that into something profitable. What if you are not passionate about anything? What if you are so numb that you have no idea how to go about figuring out what could even remotely be something you could be passionate about?
Fan Gurling Chances are you were not always numb. Thing back to your childhood/younger self. What were you passionate about then? Don’t just dismiss something you (used to) love because your current, numbed, self thinks it’s stupid. Trust your gut feeling over logic. I hope you find it, good luck.
Fan Gurling You may want to just start out doing some journaling. It doesn't have to be "good" journaling, but just getting your thoughts and sketches out can reveal a lot about what you care for. Even venting and getting that out can reveal in contrast what you really care about.
