When you said that you were going to judge stage presence for Hi Ren I thought, ok. I want to watch this just to see her be blown away. I wasn't disappointed. I've watched this over 70 times and I still get moved by it every time. All his work has this kind of presence in it. This piece is just the icing on the cake.

I have also watched this countless times. One thing I found is more often than not I find myself frozen. Like my vape 1/2 way to my mouth barely remembering to breathe sometimes. He's polarizing.

Very true. He pops up talking to his reactors quite often. He enjoys people spreading his music in any way they can.
That's awesome of him. I glad they realize how the this performance is one that is best left to speak for itself while being viewed in its entirety. It's a once in a lifetime opus of the human condition. One by an very skilled and gifted artist who has obviously faced off with his own mortality and understands the nature of life. Humanity needed this right at this moment, as this is where we are collectively at this moment in time.
A masterpiece. No one should be prepared for it - just be blown away by greatness

When you said you was going to watch for the stage presence and delivery - I thought “bless her - she doesn’t know”
And the fact you was silent and drawn in to the performance, you couldn’t stop or critique it and your emotion was clear to see seeping through your face shows how powerful it was.
Nobody knows until they watch it. And even then you sill don't completely know
I don't know if it should get a Grammy, an Oscar, or a Tony, but it ought to get something, even if they have to make up a new category of one nominee.
Oscars are for movies.
Grammys are for music.
Emmys are for Daytime TV.
Tonys are Italians dudes. 😛 Seriously, I'm not sure what those honor, but by process of elimination, it may be for another category in TV.
Grammys are also sweet old ladies who bake us cookies that taste like hugs, lol.

I love the way you were silent and just watched, without stopping to critique the stage presence. It allowed you to go way beyond that and at the end give a really great reaction and synopsis.
At first I was curious about all the hype around him here on UA-cam.
Then, I was mesmerized by the way he started playing the guitar with such intensity.
But once he actually started speaking it was just... Wow...
It left me speechless, from the beginning to the very end, and I'm still trying to process what I listened to.
As someone who deals with mental issues and has a sort of split personality syndrome, I think this is a HUGE message to those who may not understand us, who deal with our inner demons every day.
The way the two "Rens" went back and forth, is exactly how, sometimes, both of my personalities "go at each other" inside my head, this perfect chaos is just.. crazy amazing.
I literally can not stop watching his video. This has touched me more than any song I have heard in a long time. This kid is brilliant and needs to be exposed as much as possible.

of the 30 plus reactions i have watched in a row, you talked and interrupted the least, and it was the most genuine reaction i have seen. the right reaction to this song is stunned silence accompanied by tears... at least at first. I'm sorry no one warned you, but it was that for me and i think it's better that way :)
Yes there is a weird addiction searching more and more reactioners in a row. Part of my brain is laughing at me saying you're procrastinating again and using another really good excuse by watching Hi Ren over and over. My selfish part of my brain is winning the argument again, as usual. I'm sure I'm going to watch another 10 or 15 today.

What one should fathom is that it's not just the psychosis, but that Ren is physically sick too, so much that he has spent the last 8 years mostly being in one room for 23 hours a day. That has given him time to practice, but surely he has gone through serious hardship. What a guy. I am mesmerized by his performances.
When you have Lyme disease and it goes undiagnosed it can cause severe auto-immune problems and can even be fatal. That’s what Ren has been dealing with. It’s nice to see he is gaining some traction with his physical health a little bit though.
In the last 10 seconds of the song while he's just talking to us.... look into his eyes, he has tears too!!!! This is a masterpiece!!!
Busking has to be the source of his ability to perform, presentationally speaking. He’s literally learned the best ways to sell his music in the moment.
So many nuances, but one of my favorite is his side glance at the end when he explains he is hope. He looks towards the dark with not just resolution but without anger merely purpose❤

A neurologist's reaction channel described the two voices as the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The creative possibility v the logical, limiting, cynical sides. And I guess God is the whole, integrated, completed one brain that we long to be part of. (ren's dad).

This is a pathological tyrannical "logical" side. It could also be seen as a microcosm for what society, the world maybe be having to face.

I recommend HI Ren to this lady I met on a dating site. Her reaction told me that we would never date. She was offended that he could walk and was in a wheelchair. No, she can walk fine, no close relative in wheel chairs. She was offended for the people who are. I showed it to my brother who has been in a wheelchair for the last 8 years. The video made him cry he loved it so much, but at no point did he complain about him being in a wheelchair. I told her she gives "Karens" a bad name.
I've watched a few reaction videos to this masterpiece and seen it literally bring fully grown men to tears. What a talent, amazing.
A master class in performance and stagecraft
Great Reaction. Ren is a modern day "Bard". His productions are incredible. All of them seem to have a deep emotional meaning and forbidden message. Ren himself is a "Busker" in the Brighton are in the United Kingdom. He had a contract with Sony at one time but got an illness at around 17 years of age and was misdiagnosed with multiple ailments, including Psychosis. Until he finally had enough money to go see a specialist in Belgium, who correctly diagnosed him with Lyme disease. He is currently in Canada undergoing intense treatment to repair and help reverse some of the Lyme disease affects.If you want to continue your journey viewing Ren ... I suggest: "Ren X Chinchilla - Chalk Outlines (live)"
his catalogue is vast and great througout, but Janet has to start somewhere and Chalk Outlines is a great choice for a second and then go further... +1

For me, I imagine seeing him for the first time is like being in the 1960s and hearing Bob Dylan for the first time. You know you've heard something kind of unusual, not conventional in how it sounds, but you know it's something transformative.
More Ren please he has a magic touch ❤️.

I have watched so many Ren video reactions I have begun to notice that almost all men reactors stop to tell us what they think they just heard and saw while women reactors tend to interrupt to tell us how they feel. The true gems tell it all with their faces without any words.
I come to reactors to hear their thoughts and opinions on the matter, If you want to watch the video uninterrupted the video is on UA-cam for free already go watch it...I disagree with you I dislike reactors that don't do anything and just let the video play out, its like you are not adding anything to this you are just taking someone else work and putting your face next to it.

The Tale Of Jenny & Screech ( full version ) is THE best creative / musical story telling I have ever heard. The trilogy has absolutely everything. Ren is a creative genius .... and I do not say that lightly. 🙏
This was a beautiful, genuine and heartfelt reaction and a thoughtful commentary. Thank you. “Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 5 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on UA-cam are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world.
Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).”
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great.
Ren's performances as a member of the band "The Big Push" (which unfortunately broke up), their busking (street performances), concerts, and their live recordings, are awesome and well worth checking out. Ren's covers of "I Shot the Sheriff," "Wade in the Water," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work.

There are no words to describe brilliance of this young man. Each of us watches and this and goes Holy Sh&t. He has created a piece of generational art that is simply unforgettable along with letting those who suffer there is hope. There are no greater pieces of art created in history. We have witnessed our modern version of Van Gogh.

We ALL should speak those words to ourselves every day. To remind ourselves to never lose our humanity, to remind ourselves that life's not easy and we are ALL going through something or have in the past dealt with the unfortunate darkside of life so instead of being so divided, so angry, so judgemental and uncaring, let's be kind to one another, have patience and an open mind to different ideas, thoughts and opinions and let's look out for one another. Because if everything goes south and falls apart, we're going to have to rely on each other to survive. No government, no politicians who love to control us, tell us what to go and tax us to death, will be there for us. No celebrity who live to give advice and tell us who we should vote for when they don't live the lives we do, they won't be there for us. Nor will anyone in the media who lie, and spread their fear porn, none of them will ever be there for us.
All we got is each other!
For any other first time listeners I think Chalk Outlines (live) w/ Chinchilla is a recommended follow up, to see how powerful Ren can make a basic four chord song. Disarmed of all the theatrics and epic arrangements, he will still manage to deliver an even harder gut punch than he did here .
And then go listen to Genesis to hear how great a rapper and producer he is. The song is not emotionally exhausting, and instead he is healthy and confident and it was a welcome break after seeing him in such a sad state as we did here. Also his love song for Britain, Bittersweet Symphony, is another nice track.
The guy has both depth and range, if that wasn't immediately obvious. And I've yet to even hear most of the other tracks his fans usually recommend as follow ups. Ren has a lot to offer, Ren is a treasure.
My favorite song by him. Gets me every single time.
Crutch, Insomnia, Depression, Dear God, How to be Me, Dominoes... All massively underrated.

I thought the same way the first time that I saw this video. I never heard of Ren before seeing this video, but after watching it, I'll never forget Ren.
I'm delighted you found this astonishing piece of art. I enjoyed your response. Ren's performances are quite extraordinary. I watched an amazing song of his yesterday, Freckled Angels, from 11 years ago, when he very ill and grieving, and it was a fantastic piece sung with such total conviction. He hasn't stopped being an amazing performer ever since in almost every genre of music you can imagine. Also try Ren X chinchilla 'chalk outlines' (live). Astonishing performance which hit almost as deep as this.

Very nice reaction. By your facial features your face seemed to say "What The Heck Is This?" the whole way through but it was a facial facade as you were absorbing everything about this masterful performance!! Brava!!
Even more impressive when you realize the audio was one single live take and the video was edited together from four different takes.
The video was one take, from different cameras to get the different angles (except for a bit in the end, that must have come from their previous takes) Ren said it took them 3 tries to get it.
@Soetsussie so, exactly what I said then. One audio live take and the footage edited together from all the different live takes - especially towards the end. You can see the camera and audio not syncing where Ren comes back after bad Ren flips out ("... half my life ill..." verse), which means footage was used from a different take. Also, they stated they did not have as many cameras as there were angles, so that is why they used footage from other takes - otherwise you would see cameras everywhere in the wide shot ("... night has dawn..." verse, for instance). Remember, there was just one guy with the camera.
Nothing wrong with that. The audio performance is still one take.
@@jamesp7709 No, the video is all from the same take as the audio too, just from the different cameras... Except the monolog at the end, that did in fact come from a different take.
@somerando1073 That's not correct, and not what Ren said. Also, having done audio and video recording myself, what he said makes sense: you shoot 4 different takes - then you take the audio from the best take, and also edit in footage from the other three takes you did not choose, for enhanced visuals.
As I am sure you can tell, the audio matches the visual almost perfectly throughout the song, except for the first half of the first verse after "bad Ren" goes full Satan. During the lines "Hi Ren, I have taken some time to be still - I have taken some time to be by myself and I've spent half my life ill - Just as sure as the dawn starts turning..." his mouth does not match the audio.
I am sure he would confirm this if he saw this. It does not take away from the video at all. It's still just as impressive that the audio is all one take, and most of the video.
Thank you for letting the song play...your emotional reaction spoke more than all the words spoken by others when they stop and chop it all up. Beyond the lyrics, the separation of lighting both on his face and the lamps in the background coupled with the intensity versus the softness of how he hit the chords...this is definitely art on a super stellar level. It's the joining of theatre and several genres of Music plus Poetry all wrapped up in one performance. It's outstanding.
I would bet someone in these comments will suggest Ren's Tale of Jenny and Screech (Full). It's even longer than this but performance wise, it eclipses this beautiful song. *IF* you do it, there are actually three songs involved, The Tale of Jenny, Screech's Tale, and Violet's Tale but they are all compiled in the (full) version. You might want to watch the live performance Ren did on the streets of Brighton however. It is story telling at its finest and truly cements Ren as the modern Bard. His style is called Bardcore in those three songs and in this one. Ren tells stories with every song he sings. Some are more lighthearted, some are Rap, some are covers of just about every genre (many of those done with the band he is a part of called The Big Push).
Other artists you might want to try are NF (his new song Hope); Falling in Revers (try Popular Monster); and Tom MacDonald (try Best Rapper Ever which is this same story told a different way).

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve watched Hi Ren and reaction videos.
But this has been my favorite reaction video cause it expresses why I’m so drawn to the video.
We are ALL glass houses tempted to throw stones at other glass houses but very few address the EVIL voice that comes to steal, kill and destroy with constant accusations…and that there is healing in the ONE by who’s hand we were made to stand.

Ren is a true Artist with an extraordinary variety of talents in performance, lyricism and musicality - all wrapped up in a unique genre-defying package. As many others have commented, "The Tale of Jenny and Screech" [Full] is another fine example of Ren's Performance Art, and "Chalk Outlines" [Live] with Chinchilla is a poignant illustration of life under medication sung so beautifully. Every time I watch someone react to REN I am actually jealous that they get to experience him for the first time!!
Ren is a master teaching class about performance. This work is an opus on the human condition from an very skilled and gifted artists. This work will be analyzed for years to come. It is a masterpiece not unlike The Watchman graphic novel. Where he is using all the rules of music composition to push the medium to such a level that it is only under deconstruction that we can fully appreciate how brilliant it actually is.
I must add how much I truly enjoyed your reaction while viewing, minimal. As this is a piece of art that speaks for itself. Not implying that your words would have been uninformed, just in that to an intelligent mind, it becomes so obvious by this works structure that there is too much going on to process properly unless viewed as a whole.
His performance was genuine! as someone who has a closely related illness of toxic mold exposure which is so similar that Lyme disease and mold exposure are often misdiagnosed and mistaken for each other. The symptoms and health issues are very similar, as well as the mental and emotional effects and impact.
It is no leap for me to assume that all he was really doing to channel inspiration for this performance and narrative was simply reliving the experience. Not that this internal dialog isn't shared by everyone. Something about these immune system disorders brings this inner struggle to the forefront of your daily existence. Like how someone who is blind develops much stronger and more sensitive abilities with in their remaining senses.
Simply put, it's obvious that he lived it, as we all do.
What I enjoyed the most is that he is able to state that good and evil, light and dark, etc are not of a religious hierarchy ie "not David vs Goliath"
But that they are the very threads that the fabric of existence is woven from. Life does not exist without a need to consume other life. The subtext is that there are not good and evil people in the world. There are simply people and in us all, depending the circumstances within any given moment, we can all be both, we are all both. Brilliant!
I personally have never seen any other musical artists manifest to this level of execution in the modern era.

He's fighting his own internal shadow.. it's not about religion.. it's about humanity. He even says it in his own words... he stands on his own two feet... he is HOPE, he is REPRIEVE (the feeling of having the loosening of the noose) .. he has become VICTORY even though he struggles with the "dance". He wins the dance.. it's not a battle... it's a life long dance, and he's learned how to wins it. This man is an ICON.
If you haven't yet, read his post on that video. He explains his meaning behind the song. His whole catalog is phenomenal. The 3 part Violet's son/Jenny's song/Screech's song is truly great.
I see this as Shakespeare-meets-rap performed by a brilliant actor. Truly magnificent performance. An artist well worth a deep dive.

Unlike most videos every part was a great piece of art; the videography, the music, the lyrics and the artist's performance were all incredible.
"You gotta kill you if you wanna kill me" is the most terrifying line of the song for me, as I ...... try to actively defeat that side of myself. But the best thing he says in the song is for young people, that it gets easier to relax and dismiss that side that talks bad of you, that scares you.... Do not end it, keep going.... you will get power over it.

Ren (edit: uses Christian symbolism), so I can't fault your interpretation too hard, but this masterpiece transcends religion. I'm an atheist myself, and I still appreciate the symbolism, the message of hope, and the example of shadow work in psychology. Whether you believe Jesus is the only way, or Allah is the only way, or enlightened self-actualization is the best way, this amazing work of art speaks your language and reaches your heart. To me, that's part of what makes this song such a priceless gem - a classic that I will fight to have heard and remembered.
Ren has said that he isn't religious...that he doesn't call himself a Christian, etc. He just likes stories and human explanations of the divine.

@Gracey Dez I got the idea from another reactor who read it online before he even started watching the video - poor source, I guess. As wonderfully transcendent as Hi Ren is, I'm not at all surprised to learn that he isn't religious. But his symbolism used here is Christian - not even Muslim or Jewish. He must have been raised in it, learned it at school, or something. "Not true at all" seems just a little off the mark.
@@pondboy3682im not Christian, or religious.. not anymore. But I still see the Bible as an incredible piece of literature. One of my favorite parts in Hi Ren is the line "face to face with the Beast, I will rise from the East and settle on the ocean floor." Which comes from psalms 139, "If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea.. even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me." Pretty much all of psalms 139 is about the battle between the light and the dark. Im not going to speculate on Rens religion, but this song was definitely inspired by religious works.

There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this. It was a transformative experience for me… just as this song also resonates.
As a person who’s never been able to escape negative self-talk, *realizing* that you can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that you *know* you have-is sooo important.
It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it.
