    Japanese, not K-Pop.
    Genre is Kawai-Metal, a genre they invented.

    Good reaction. Welcome to the crazy universe of BabyMetal.
    BabyMetal is an atypical heavy metal group, because they are idols. In Japan, idols are often paired with pop music (Jpop), and Babymetal was actually a subgroup of a larger idol group called Sakura Gakuin.
    Sakura was made up of girls between 10 and 15 years old dedicated to Jpop. When SuMetal (the singer) started she was 12 years old and MoaMetal/YuiMetal (the backup singers) were only 10 years old. Sakura represented the Japanese high school and the girls were distributed in clubs (traditional Japanese extracurricular activities such as cooking, swimming, basketball, sewing, etc.).
    One of the producers, a lover of heavy metal, saw that Su's singing could perfectly be used in metal and asked permission from the Mother House (Amuse) to create the heavy music club, proposing an experiment in fusion between metal and the pop. Nobody, as they themselves have confessed, had much hope for its outcome, but they gave it the green light and thus BabyMetal, Sakura Gakuin's heavy music club, was born.
    The first songs were intended for girls between 10 and 15 years old, who were Sakura's target audience. However, their quality and the fusion between pop and metal attracted attention beyond this audience and they began to frequent their metal concerts... a shocking audience of children and metalheads.
    And it worked, it worked so well that they began to support groups like Metallica, Red Hot, BMTH or Lady Gaga, I seem to remember, on their tours in Japan. And the Red Hot singer commented that he was impressed to realize that part of the public came to see them, not them.
    And so the base of BabyMetal fans grew. Sakura was a group in which, upon turning 15, the members had to leave (to pursue their careers elsewhere) and the producer (KobaMetal) requested permission again to create BabyMetal as an independent group. Success was already beginning to become a reality in Asia, so they authorized it, although Moa and Yui (they were still 13 years old) would also continue to be part of other Sakura clubs (I don't know when the poor girls studied, but they did).
    In 2014 a milestone would arrive in the group's history. They were already an established metal group in Asia that sold out concerts, but they had not yet made the leap to the West. In that year his song "Gimme Chocolate" rose to fame on UA-cam (currently 182M views) and attracted the attention of the producers of the Sonisphere festival. KobaMetal had doubts about taking the step, since their musical proposal (Kawaii Metal or Cute Metal, a genre of which they are considered creators) might not be accepted in the West and the metalheads who went to the Sonisphere had a reputation for saying goodbye to very bad manners to the artists they didn't like (even with bottles full of urine), but they were offered to go to one of the secondary stages (about 5000 spectators) and they ended up accepting.
    But the success of BabyMetal on UA-cam and the fact that all the concerts they were going to give in Europe were sold out in a few days, convinced the producers to take them to the main stage, where they would share with groups like Metallica, for example.
    How many girls (they were between 16 and 14 years old at that time) were "terrified" before going out, and they didn't know what scared them more: that they wouldn't understand their music and they would have to run away or that when they went out on stage it would be empty. .
    But the story was very different, not only was it not empty, but more than 50,000 metalheads, an estimated 95% of whom had never heard of them, finished their fifth and last song chanting "another one, another one."
    And that's how they achieved popularity in the West as well.
    They currently have 4 albums on the market:
    -Babymetal (2013): Their first album and the most childish of all, since they were between 15-13 years old when it came out and had energetic, positive music that left a smile on their faces. Gimme Chocolate is from this album.
    -Metal Resistence (2016): an album that, without losing the essence of the first, shows more mature music, going from childhood to adolescence. Songs like Karate were a large part of his presentation in the West.
    -Metal Galaxy (2018): a turning point in its style. Without abandoning their energy, they turned their attention to new forms of metal fusion (hip-hop, dance music, Hindu music or European folklore, among others), projecting a much more mature music in keeping with their age, which was already around 21 years old. of Su and the 18 of Moa (unfortunately Yui left the group due to health problems)
    And now in 2023 they have just released their new album "The Other One", which is, again, totally different from what they have done until now (one of the hallmarks of BabyMetal is that their songs are usually very different some from others (although they are all positive adrenaline releases)
    Currently BabyMetal is considered the most important Heavy Metal group in Japan (I'm not saying the best, that's for everyone to decide) and the most influential in history in the West (it has reached levels that no other Japanese heavy group has reached before). ).
    The journey through the Babymetal galaxy may be long, but it is certainly entertaining and with a few songs it drags you with a smile into the fox hole.

    Welcome to the Foxhole. It's called the Foxhole because BM's patron deity is the Fox God. Babymetal are from Japan and were formed in 2010 by a producer at the Amuse talent agency called Kei Kobayashi as a subgroup of the school themed J-pop (not K-pop) idol group, Sakura Gakuin. He had heard Suzuka Nakamoto singing with the short lived group "Karen Girl's" and thought that her voice would work well singing metal. So when she joined Sakura Gakuin he put his plan into action and paired her with Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno. They were so successful that in 2013 they got their own fantastic live backing band, "The Kami Band" and were spun off and have become a metal group that can fill major international stadiums. FYI this video was made in late 2013, so Su is 16 and Moa and Yui are 14.
    "Gimme Chocolate" is often the introduction to BM because of the number of views it has so it comes up first in searches. The song went viral back in 2014. It's about liking chocolate, so not very deep, and is one of their most gimmicky songs with its obvious blending of J-pop and metal. The concert was Legend 1997 and was to mark Su's (the lead singer) 16th birthday as well as BM's transition into a full on headlining live concert act.
    Next you should listen to some classic performances like "Road of Resistance Live in Japan" or "Headbanger Legend 1997", "Tales of the Destinies" or their spare performance of "Monochrome - First Take".

    they give 100% in every performance. a babymetal show is usually a little over an hour long because of the intensity of the choreography. it's like doing an aerobic workout every show. this video is from their early years. the performances have become more mature especially in the last couple of years. lead singer su-metal's stage presence is absolutely amazing. she has the crowd eating out of her hand from the first second to the last.

    Good first reaction to BabyMetal. You really want to go down this rabbit hole, because they change up how they present based on the mood of the song they are performing. The best Metal song ever about wanting to eat chocolate. Or, strictly speaking, Kawaii Metal (Cute Metal), their producer's invention and one of the best Metal genres ever. This was a decade ago but they've never stopped evolving and growing and have always had the most epic stage presence. Check out some of their recent music videos from live gigs, all on their YT channel. The lead singer has been called a Stage General a number of times. Their choreographer was supposed to choreo the Tokyo Olympics until the plague hit. She also helps a couple of other female bands come up with their choreo. The choreo is always an interpretation of the song lyrics.

    Judging by the name of this channel I'm assuming that you don't necessarily do "standard" music reactions - but I clicked on this video because I thought it might be interesting to hear your thoughts due to your profession.
    Your reaction was enjoyable to watch. Most people don't know what to make of BABYMETAL the first time they experience them, and you took it pretty well in stride.
    There is a huge and diverse metal and metal-adjacent scene in Japan (Japan's music scene overall is the best in the world right now in my opinion), but even in Japan BABYMETAL stands out. They essentially created their own metal subgenre, which is a fusion of J-Pop vocals and aesthetic sensibilities with metal (called "Kawaii" metal, meaning "cute" metal) - no other top-tier band in the world does what they do. BABYMETAL is very much a band that puts a lot of emphasis on visuals, combining music, dance, theater, amazing stage productions elements, and their own backstory lore into their performances. Their live performances, especially their large arena shows are legendary, and they are one of the best live performing bands in the world today. Almost everyone will tell you to react to their live stuff.
    If you're interested in reacting to more, I would next recommend their performance of their song "Headbanger!!" from the 1997 Apocalypse show (named that because it was a birthday performance for the lead singer, who was born in 1997), and then perhaps their "Road of Resistance Live in Japan" clip.
    Enjoy the ride.

    Most of the truly important information has been or will be given in other comments, so I like to give the fun titles and nicknames given by The ONE (Babymetal’s Fan-base) as well as other (un)important information.
    BABYMETAL started as an experimental sub-unit of the larger JPop/JRock group Sakura Gakuin.
    Suzuka Nakamoto\Su-Metal (Vocals and Dance): Angel of Song, Queen Su, Queen of Kawaii, Metal Queen, and Metal Goddess.
    Before Sakura Gakuin, she performed in a stage production of "The Adventurers" and was a member of the JPop trio, Karen Girls.
    Fun Fact: Bullfrogs are her Kryptonite
    Yui Mizuno\Yuimetal (Scream and Dance) Former member since 2018: Angel of Dance, Princess Yui, Tomato Princess, Kawaii Princess and Devourer of Souls (or at least she stares into your soul). Yui had a minor role as a child actor in a Japanese TV Drama before joining Sakura Gakuin.
    Fun Fact: Yui is tickled by Bullfrogs. ** WARNING ** Do NOT, ever, under any circumstances call her “small”, "smol", “short” or “tiny” (same rule applies to Moametal).
    Moa Kikuchi\Moametal (Scream and Dance): Angel of Love\Smile, Princess Moa, Kawaii Princess, Super Moa-chan, Maiden of Mischief, and Headmistress of Hedabon.
    Fun Fact: Loves to troll Su-metal on-stage with little pranks as well as torment Su-metal with Bullfrogs.
    Momoko Okazaki\Momometal (Scream and Dance): Angel of Joy, Kawaii Princess, Princess Peach, Vampire Slayer, Kabuki Queen. Also a Sakura Gakuin graduate. Was a contestant on the Korean reality survival program "Girls Planet 999" (which thankfully for The ONE, she was eliminated from) and performed in a stage musical production of "Black Butler". Momoko was the only Avenger (see below) to perform in the “10 BABYMETAL Budokan” shows in 2021 and was officially named Momometal and made a permanent member in April 2023. She deserves the spot!
    Fun Fact: Momoko's father is a popular comedian in Japan known for making non-chalant quips that may or may not seem to be intended as jokes. Momoko worked very hard to make her way without using his name as a crutch.
    BLACK BABYMETAL: Yuimetal and Moametal performing as a duet while Su-metal takes a breather. Also known as “MoiMoi”. There are 4 BBM songs (GJ!, Onedari Daiskusen, 4 No Uta\Song 4, and Sis. Anger) which Moametal performed solo a few times after Yui's departure. Now that Momometal is a member, we are hoping for more BBM songs with MoMoa! But only the Fox God knows.
    AVENGERS: 3 Dancers who took turns performing the choreography in Yuimetal’s spot after her departure. They were not official members did not have microphones and were not even named. It was the fans who quickly figured out who they were and you will see them in live performances between 2018 and 2021.
    They were:
    Momoko Okazaki (see above).
    Riho Sayashi: Suzuka’s former rival at Actors School Hiroshima, often competing for the same roles. Former “Ultimate Ace” of the JPop Idol group Morning Musume. Now a solo artist.
    Kano Fujihara: Former Member of Sakura Gakuin, the school-aged Idol group that BABYMETAL was born out of. Like Suzuka and Moa before her, Kano was Student Council President her last year in Sakura Gakuin. She is now a member of the Idol group @onefive, which is comprised of 4 Sakura Gakuin graduates (Kano, Momo, Soyo and Gumi). Kano only performed with BABYMETAL in Japan as she could not travel, likely due to her commitments to Sakura Gakuin and the then developing @onefive.
    Their Choreographer is Mikikometal/Mikiko Mizuno (no relation to Yui). One of the top choreographers in Japan and has been working with these girls from the very beginning. She also has choreographed the JPop trio Perfume since they were in the 5th grade at Actors School Hiroshima (and those young ladies are now in their 30s!)
    We are #notacult.

      Not really true, Alt-Idol (the official name of the genre) was around before BABYMETAL. It was created by BiS (Brand-New Idol Society), namely Pour Lui who is considered the mother of Alt-Idol, in 2010, while BABYMETAL didn't release their first track until 2011.
      Created by BiS and Pour Lui, popularised by BABYMETAL. As much as I love Koba, Junnosuke Watanabe is the true originator of the genre.

      @@kitsuneneko2567 That's a fair opinion. I've never been into idol, but am a metalhead. From my perspective, with9out going into it, they make metal fun. You go to a metal festival here in the west, and you see band after band and people are rocking, and all of a sudden Babymetal hits the stage, and everyone is smiling and a metal dance party breaks out.

    Great first reaction! 🤘🦊🤘 Thank you for giving BABYMETAL a chance!!! BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii (cute) metal group (a metal subgenre that they created) that formed in 2010 when the original 3 girls were 11-12 years old (yes,they were very young), and since then have performed with, toured with, or opened for Metallica, Korn, Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Dragonforce, Guns N' Roses, Lady Gaga, Rob Halford of Judas Priest (there's a great youtube video of their performance with Rob at a metal award show), and Red Hot Chili Peppers (there is a youtube video of them performing Gimme Chocolate with RHCP, as well as with Korn, and DragonForce), to name a few of many. They have performed at large metal events/concerts in front of 65,000+ skeptical metalheads in Europe (Glastonbury, Download, Sonisphere, etc), US, and Asia. They are the first Japanese band to perform at Wembley arena in the UK. Also, 20+ awards have been given to them. They have 60+ songs and each one is different from the other, so I hope you give the other songs a try. Also, they are currently on another world tour that included many dates here in the USA, and released a new amazing album just a few months ago! 🤘🦊🤘

    Babymetal the inventors of kawaii (cute) metal. Btw they are Japanese, so it has nothing to do with kpop. The girls said in an interview that in the early days they didn’t know how to manage their stamina, so the were almost unable to finish their shows, since they were running at full speed from start to finish. These days they still give 110% but manage their stamina much better (breaks between songs help a lot).
    Babymetal was created in 2010 so they are doing this for 13 years now and haven’t lost that energy. You should definitely react to “Road of Resistance- live in Japan” which is another great example of their unique and extraordinary stage presence! 🤘🦊🔥

    @Filboid2000 6 місяців тому +8

    Well, you’ve opened a can of worms! The “WTF did I just watch” reaction is typical among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that reaction. "Gimme Chocolate" is arguably the video that put them on the radar, and I would be the first to say that they have many songs that are as good, and much better, as this one.
    BABYMETAL has been around for a bit over twelve years now (they started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (or the “Greek chorus” as I like to call them - officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the band in 2018, and only earlier this year Momometal (Momoko Okazaki) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
    In regards to the energy of Babymetal: first, none of these girls (at the time of this video) are above the age of 16 - that age when you have the energy of a nuclear power plant. Second, unlike many other metal bands, these ladies aren't wrung out on drugs and/or alcohol so naturally they just keep going and going and going. Third, if you understand the Japanese ethos, giving something your all is how they do things (unlike most of us lazy-ass Americans). However, I have heard that many times after their concerts, Su, Moa, and Yui would literally drop after leaving the stage with roadies putting ice packs on them. And, from what I understand, they've maintained that energy to this day (although it would appear that their concerts are somewhat shorter).
    BABYMETAL is NOT K-pop (Korea) or J-pop (Japan, where they’re from) or even J-metal; BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. If you have a notion to check out more BABYMETAL, I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. Or, if you’d rather do some live, then I suggest “Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!” or “BABYMETAL Death” the Legend 1997 versions. There is a playlist on UA-cam ("BABYMETAL Top Twenty") that includes those four songs and the one you just reacted to; I highly recommend you give it a look, it has a mix of MV’s and live performances, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole (you're in for a wild ride!!!). Sorry about the wall!
    Keep rockin' BABYMETAL!!!
    KITSUNE UP!!! 🤘🦊🤘

    This entire concert (Legend 1997) is early-career representative of their stage presence, from the ave marie version of headbanger intro, to the ending song of the set. It is also Su-Metal's (lead singer) 16th birthday, and a unique take on a rock opera telling a story through the entire show. This video went viral and launched their visibility outside of Japan, after this they end up becoming the youngest female led band to ever play Budokan, first Japanese band to play Wembley, win multiple prestigious industry awards for best band / best live band and the like. And they never stop improving, to this day they keep growing and evolving while maintaining the core love of their music. There is really nothing like them.

    This whole concept of combining JPop/Idol music with metal could have been a disaster, but the quality of the singing, songwriting, choreography and staging take it to another level.
    'Gimme Chocolate!!' is definitely one of their "poppier" tracks.
    Even so, that blast beat gets you. And the whole thing is about 10x heavier live.
    This is the studio track over the live December 21st, 2013 'Legend 1997' concert footage which celebrated the lead singer's 16th birthday.
    (1997 was Su's birth year)
    That was actually the world premiere of this song. Of course the choreography, etc. is already dialed in.
    Their choreographer MIKIKO is also the stage director and choreographer for the Japanese electro/dancepop group Perfume, and her own experimental dance troupe, elevenplay.
    I hope you continue to explore BABYMETAL.
    The 'Gimme Chocolate' footage is almost ten years old.

    It's not surprising that you didn't know the genre, as it really didn't exist before BABYMETAL. They call it Kawaii Metal (kawaii is the Japanese word for cute). Most people find it confusing at first, but often curiosity and fascination pushes them to watch more, and by the third song they are hooked. I think what's obvious right form the start is that they are very talented and that they make you smile. That's not a bad start, is it? Especially since Metal is still pretty dark and serious most of the time. So the positivity in this is very refreshing.
    There is a great variety in their music, so everyone should find at least a few songs they like. And don't forget that this video is almost ten years old, so they have certainly developed since then. Either way, especially if you are looking for stage presence, I think you won't be disappointed. "Road of Resistance" live in Japan would be a nice performance to watch. The song is a little less playful than Gimme Chocolate, but the performance is as good as it gets.

    This is from 2013, a show celebrating SU-METAL's 16th Birthday and they becoming an independent act from Sakura Gakuin, it's a bit complicated 😅. The audio is from the studio track, the show itself was meant to represent their evolution, so the first song was performed in lip sync, then a full set with live vocals and fake musicians with a backtrack, finally the last part with real musicians and a full live show, as this was the path they went through. They indeed began quite "smol" and couldn't afford a proper backing band right away, their first show as BM was in 2012, few hundreds people attended, in 2016 they performed at Wembley and few months later at the Tokyo Dome.
    You may also want to check some of their most recent shows, as BABYMETAL are mostly a live act, like the ones they had at "PIA Arena 2023", with songs like "Light and Darkness", "Monochrome", "Mirror Mirror" or "The Legend".
    Or dive deep into their past, cause, yeah, the Foxhole is quite deep, "Karate", "Megitsune", "IDZ", "No Rain, No Rainbow"...
    One outstanding performance is "From Dusk Till Dawn" at Budokan 2021, really different. 🫡!

Also in Japan, somehow and mysteriously, there are so many eye popping female Metal bands, like Love bites( their instrumentation, composition, lyrics and the stage presence are the best of the bests in global female bands), Nemophila, Band maid, etc. So I am highly confident to say it is worth while looking around more in Japanese female bands!

    I enjoyed your reaction, first time reactions are the best and I sense you'd come to appreciate more and more what Babymetal does. Whether you'll love them I'm not sure but you seem like a sensitive person so I think you'll be moved by this entertainment phenomenon. I was a latecomer and am now quite well versed in their story of teenage prodigies evolving into extremely accomplished young women who, together with the Kami band, deliver perfect performances every time. Incidentally their live shows are note-perfect faithful to their studio recordings and therefore best for reactions. I think you'd veer towards live shows anyway. The Japanese shows are the most spectacular and I'd steer you that way. No expense spared, awe inspiring, breathtaking shows that rouse the massive audiences as one.
    Others have suggested songs to you and I'll bow to their choices.

    You should definitely look at something else. This performance is only the top of an iceberg. It all depends on why you want to look for more. If it is professional curiosity or to find good music and fun stuff to look at. Not all like Babymetal. First, Babymetal is an idol group and is exactly those three girls. There is also a backing band, that have varied over time. Most known is Kami Band. There is a huge team behind Babymetal, that write the songs and do the choreography and promotion etc. And they have had several HUGE shows in Japan and some big one abroad. I think they have three eras (I hope a fourth is on its way).
    * The young, cute and very successful era. 2010-2018 with the three original girls, Su, Moa and Yui. They started att 11 or 13 years old. Most iconic performances was in this era.
    * The growing up era. 2019-2021. Yui left in 2018 for health issues. They tried with two girls or with an extra girl that was rotated. They had some success and made e.g. PA PA YA and BxMxC.
    * The metalverse era. 2022. Still working with two girls and an extra one. Making experiments with new stuff and online stuff. Not so metal. Boring IMHO.
    * The whole again era. 2023-. One of the rotating girls (Momoko) takes Yui's place. And they release the fantastic song Metali. And they start to tour again. Quite small gigs though. This looks hopeful. But we will see if they can rise up again, now when they are grown up women. The lead singer is 26. Not so small and cute any more. Will it fly with Babymetal then?
    Here is a list of songs that have some value to see
    * Doki Doki Mornin (music video. their first song, where it started. The original music movie is very good actually.)
    * Megitsune (music video. It is iconic.)
    * YAVA (live in Japan)
    * Headbanger (live in Japan)
    * Sis Anger (live in Japan - the two dancers alone, a.k.a. "Black Babymetal" as they are a bit impish. They are best friends and like to joke.)
    * GJ (live in Japan - Black Babymetal)
    * Karate (music video)
    * Rondo of Nightmare with mischief of the metal gods (live in Japan)
    * Catch me if you can (live in Japan)
    * Road of Resistance (live in Japan)
    * Babymetal Death (live in japan at Legend 1997 concert - this one is heavy and you need some pre knowledge. You need to know what "Babymetal Desu" means in Japanese.)
    * PA PA YA (live in Japan)
    * BxMxC (music video)
    * Metali (music video).

    I’ve seen BM live in concert some ten or eleven times now and if you think this video is fun, you should definitely see them live. Their songs really come to life in front of a live crowd. If you get a good crowd, you’ll have vast mosh pits, circle pits and walls of death happening- but nobody gets hurt except in an accident. You’ll find all walks of life at a BM gig. Everyone from little girls experiencing their first concert right to seasoned metal-heads, and everyone else too. The fans are a community. You’ll find that they will begin queuing outside a venue from the morning, and will organise themselves, spend the day socialising and chatting. I’ve made a lot of new friends in the BM community and I really appreciate them for that. The band are musically very good indeed, Su js one hell of a singer and has THAT voice, Moa is amazing as always and Momoko, a recent(ish) addition has worked her backside off to get where she has and is clearly having the time of her life. Everyone works so hard and is so professional, from the girls, to the band, to their team of staff.

    Well firstly, it wouldn't be K-pop, it would be J-pop. But it's not quite that either. It's called Kawaii (cute) metal.
    .
    It's not just the metal. Japanese schoolgirls should be treated with the utmost respect and fear, because if anime is anything to go by, any one of them could kill you with a look.
    .
    This is one of their earlier songs. If you really want stage presence, not to mention crowd control, try Headbanger from the Legend of 1997 tour (Su-metal, the lead singer was born in 1997) or Road of Resistance live at Budokan.

      LEGEND 1997 wasn't a tour, it was a specific concert held on December 21st, 2013 .
      It's the same show this 'Gimme Chocolate' footage is from.

      @@rickwagner- oh. Well, either way. That version. Did I pick the right concert for RoR? The one where Su opens by signalling the crowd for the Wall of Death? Cuz that was awesome.

      @@uncle_thulhu Pretty sure you're thinking of 'Road of Resistance' - Live in Japan. That official music video was shot at Saitama Super Arena (SSA). A classic performance.

    this isnt the greatest starter track for a Stage presence coach to see. Babymetal is queens of the crowd but this isnt actually live which you should do the live with babymetal. I dont know a band in the world that commands a crowd better than these 3 angels and the beast musicians behind them. :)
    Do Road of resistance or something live. Your mind will be blow.

    Saw them live at Sonisphere in 2014; it was a great set and the crowd went absolutely mental.
