Thanks so much for making this video. I'm fixing up an older Dyna and was clueless on getting the wires loose and reinstalled. You've saved me hundreds of dollars!!
I came across your video, thank you so much for explaining how to de-pin those type of connectors and the sheathing that you used. I’m doing my apes now on my bagger and my install will go easier thanks to you good sir! Thanks again!
Great informative video. I am in the process of installing 14" apes on my ultra. I got my extensions made and pulled through the bars yesterday. I can say you can watch all the videos you want but it's not until you do it yourself that you really understand the tips and tricks. As you said, the large bunch of connectors is a pain in the butt. Had I known you could buy those I would have went that route. The nylon wire loom I'm sure is a benefit as well. I used heat shrink which I'm sure didn't slide near as well. Also never thought to check the inside of the holes for share edges. Thanks again for the time and detail. The final electrical check on everything before final assembly is a good idea as well because there is no risk of blowing a fuse if you screwed something up by having everything plugged up when testing. One last thing, not knocking anything you did, but it's not necessary to disassemble the back of the wire connectors like you did. The wires will come out the same way with that intact.
This video is gold brother. I just bought new switches. Didn't soder anything except throttle by wire. Spend the 300 bucks fellas. Way better splicing all those wires. Thank you.
Started to rebuild my fork seals on my '14 Electra Glide and figured I would go from the stock handlebars to some 14" mini apes while I had the fairing all torn down, so I greatly appreciate your video series. Very well done and thanks for taking the time to show your process....spells out some things on my install that I wasn't 100% sure on how to do or make easier. I kind of wish you would have made the long series with the clutch and brake cable install too...lol.
Heath Howard you’re welcome. I’m glad it helped, that makes it worth my time making it. I thought about doing the clutch and brake line on video as well but I just didn’t take the time. Maybe next time I do either of those, I’ll make a video.
Doing the thing for 1.25" O.D. 14" apes, wiring, (so this was a timely watch for me!) and stainless braided control cables and brake lines. Got the bars and cable kit came from LA Choppers via J&P Cycle online store. Just started the install, but looks like a complete install kit so far. Your video is a great refresher course, it's been a number of years since I did one of these, like 15 or so. Watched all 6 parts and gleaned information well worth the time invested in watching your production. Only criticism is the vocals could indeed, be a bit louder. Don't be shy, if we are watching we are interested, so belt that shit out, man. Thanks for a very good video Sir.
@@skydude426 I'm not skilled enough with electronics to attempt doing this but your series of vids certainly explains the process. I sent it to a friend who couldn't get the heated grip wiring through his new bars. It will be a good winter project now!!
Your a lifesaver!! Unfortunately I have to disassemble what I’ve started but I’m glad i didn’t get too far into it By far the best video on this subject !!!! Thank You !!!!!
Thank you sir you are awesome nothing came with very good instructions and you are the only one that I have seen do a start to finish. Made some mistakes that I have to fix but thank you very much!
What was going on with the wires for the heated hand grips? Are you waiting to install them, and protecting them with the locks in the mean time? I plan to disconnect a couple of components and will need to protect the wires as I would like to have the option of reconnecting them later. These locks would be a good option for this application. Where can I find some? Thanks for the vid man; very helpful.
Frank L the wire connectors are 3M scotch locks. Here’s a link to some on Amazon. The Harley heated hand grips have a pair of wires that run between the grips inside the handlebars. For a stock application it’s a wiring harness that plugs into each handgrip and is just long enough to run between the grips inside the bars. I cut this in half and lengthened both halves. That way I can pull them into the center hole one side at a time and use the scotch locks to splice them inside the fairing. www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=2ahUKEwjLp6C4wPDoAhUCCc0KHZbtDxoQFjAAegQIAxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F3M-Scotchlok-Butt-Connector-Pack%2Fdp%2FB0076AY1PC&usg=AOvVaw0WFdqHSqewPKWHu2cHX25j
Just watched this whole little series, awesome work! You make it look so easy. I'm bout to start a handlebar swap tomorrow on my 07 dyna. Not sure if I need the wire extension or not. Going from stock 12" mini apes to 14" T bars. How did u know what wire combinations did what function? Thank you for these videos this will help alot!!!
Most detailed information I've been able to find thanks for taking the time to do it. Now I'm trying to find out what size the wires are if you can help
Tim S the wires in the handle bars are 20 gauge. Here’s a link to a site where you can buy color coded wires, pins and connectors. 4rcustomswire.com/t/crimp-and-terminal-release-tools
Hello Sky Dude, Just wanted to let you know that I finished my handlebar installation and everything checked out fine. The only thing I had an issue with was priming the front brake master cylinder. I didn’t have a vacuum pump, so I went to the dealership. On to my next issue. Would you happen to know where I can buy the 3 button air control valve on the road zeppelin seat. Milsco Manufacturing makes the seats for Harley Davidson and they won’t sell to the public. They want me to send the seat to them. I know what’s wrong. I just need the air control valve. I took the seat completely apart and found that the tubing to the air bladders were dry rotted. I replace/repaired the tubing, checked for leaks. The bladders pressure up, but the control valve leaks back down. I told Milsco that they don’t make valve, but that didn’t do any good. They just want to make the money. Any help would be appreciated.
Ricky St. Pierre, I’m glad to hear your handlebar install worked out. As far as the air valve for your seat, I have no idea. I’ve never owned or had a Road Zeppelin seat apart. Sorry.
That’s OK, for the cost of the seat, it should last longer than 10 years in my opinion. I’m going to get a cost breakdown and consider a repair or not. You have a good weekend!
Hello Skydude, My next step will be checking all the wires as you’ve done in this video, but don’t have the instrument you have. Never used one before. What kind of instrument is that your using? Never thought of writing down what each wire is for. Would I be able to use yours for my trike? Had a little trouble removing the last two pins on the molex gray connector. Oh, by the way, your pin/needle idea worked great. Had to pull the pins out with a small needle nose grabbing the wire. I broke two of the little thin walls that separates the pins. I guess I should replace the connector. I hope Harley has those in stock.
The instrument is just a common multi-meter. I bought this one at Lowe’s. If your dealer doesn’t have the connectors on hand, they should be able to order them. This is a good site to get and connectors and pins you should need. 4rcustomswire.com/t/crimp-and-terminal-release-tools
Thanks once again! I checked with Harley dealership, they don’t stock the molex housing, just the pins. I order one from the site you gave me. On my damaged connector, there are two white dummy pins or slots that are not used. Any idea how to get them out?
Hello Sky dude, I want to make these checks with the multi meter, but I’m elementary when it comes to this. Could you give me a little schooling on how to use this instrument. If it’s too much to explain, I’ll just have to skip it.
Excellent video series, I wish I had seen them before I did my bars! The braided nylon sheathing is the best tip I have seen. I also took pics of the connectors before I took 'em apart.
Hello Skydude, I need your help again! I was pulling my throttle control wires from my stock handlebars. Oh, by the way, I have a 2011 Ultra Classic Tri-Glide. I made me a wire diagram showing all wire colors in the connector outside the handlebars, just as you recommended. As I was pulling, the wire connector inside the bar pulled loose from the throttle control. The throttle control wire colors are different from the connector outside the bar. The throttle control has two sets of red, white, and black. One set has a yellow sleeve on it and the other set has a black sleeve on it. I understand, others had this same problem. Anyway of identifying the throttle control wiring to the color coded connector outside the bar. Looks like I got myself into a mess! Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
The yellow bundle is as follows: Black to Grey White to Violet Red to Red The black bundle is as follows: Black to Black White to Blue Red to Brown I hope this answers your question.

Awesome series, about to install some 18” twin peaks.
Great video! I think the grinding of the holes and the nylon sheathing makes this look easy. Nice job sir!
Thanks. I’ve done this without cleaning up the holes and no nylon sheathing, it sucks. Between those two things, the job is much easier.
Your a lifesaver!!

I believe the blank pins come out the same way as the terminal pins. Use a needle or removal tool.
The blank pins have a wider tab than the other pins. It took a little more effort to get them out.
