    Cam doesn't always look at metrics when he is riding his bike, he likes to race - trying to beat everybody on the day rather than doing a personal best.
    Focussing on perceived effort and investing in kit rather than your bike are two of his top tips to a fast bike split! Check out the video for the rest of Cam Wurf's cycling tips.

    Great video Mark, really good interview of a very forthright pro. A couple of key "takeaways" for me are: Get a bike that is comfortable as opposed to really cool looking; if you can't do it in training don't expect it to happen on race day - miracles don't happern on race day. Cam and Sebi don't even use power meters at Kona!

    Such a nice guy Cameron is!! Apart of the great quote "train hard, race easy" for me the most important tip here is that it doesn´t matter how much power you´ve got if you´re going slow! Such a great truth!!! Watts are not speed ! :) Thanks GTN for this interview and thanks Cam for the tips!! Looking for more videos like this!

    • @loulew07

      In the sport since 1985 always focused on speed and avg speed, at age 61 still learning, and now my indoor bike, road bike, TT all have power meters, which I find is good for gauging the wind . With a bike trail going 20 MPH with a head wind my power might be 200 watts, turn head the other direction and now tailwind gives me 20MPH with 135 watts , so watts is not speed , yes, but its about energy used in how to balance that speed . And I use watts to gauge my recovery , legs are heavy , watts show it .

    Great advice from Cam! Interesting to note that other pro’s s seem obsessed with power meters ( like Sanders) whereas Cam seems to focus on what his body is telling him and using that as his ‘meter’ so to speak... results say it all.

    • @hebrews11vs5
      @hebrews11vs5 4 роки тому

      Yeah, cam pacing to feel is a sign of a great time trialist. Very strange that he'd recommend the Casc bambino as that helmet has everything to do with obsessing about staring down at the power meter. How you distribute power on the course is the input which will lead to an output. The output is your overall time for the course. If your 'feel' does not translate to power applied at the right place and time on course, then your 'feel' just screwed up your race time. So I think if you can some how try and tie your 'feel' into knowing about what that wattage is, it could be very helpful. I know guys who do this well, I seem to need a lot of help in this area. For example at the beginning of a ride 500 watts feels like 400 and at the end of a ride, vice versa.

    But: A couple of watts more spent on a climb at low speed increases the average speed more than a couple of watts invested at high speeds because of air resistance rising with the power of 2.

      It makes sense and it's normal as he is a former road cycling pro, and most of them dislike TT bikes/races. He is used to the road bike position and as he said, it's more comfortable and powerful for him but he acknowledges that an TT bike/position in a non-drafting race like IM has more advantages than the road bike/position.

    'Casc bambino probably a great helmet'.... Proved wrong by aero coach. Cam wurf I think is the same guy who says the 80mm rear can be faster than a disc. Supposedly if your speed is slower then the 80mm wheels become more aero than disc.are you sure about that?!? 'go hard when it's easy and easy when it's hard'. Another statement he makes. Not using your brain to think about what is ahead on course. Oh my, this advice is terrible. And it's down right contrary to the truth. At least he is saying train hard so you are used to that intensity. That is good advice. I don't mean to be so negative but when you point at the color blue and call it red.... I'm going to call you out on it. Reference Taylor Phinney 'be a slave of speed'. Reference me: 'be an enemy to any slow speeds on course and don't tolerate the slow rather push through'. Reference Cannondale themselves 'my new bike I just created is 200 billion watts faster than your bike at 300kph'. (exateration) but that means going a small % faster in speed at a relatively high speed will cost you an inordinately higher percentage of power/work. Don't push that downhill Cam. Don't believe me? Go to gribble. Org for the bike calculator and do the math. Forget about how you 'feel'. OK if you can't np more than your avg, then pace at an even power. But by golly learn how to be variable. Np:avg = variability index. Some rare courses demand 1.1 but even 1.05 you should be able to do. Reference David Millar : ' I bury myself up a climb if i have used my brain to know what is ahead and I know there is a recovery on a down hill coming up (for downhill look above at Cannondale statement). Ronald katuba or whatever the guy is from Slovakia with a you tube channel, he says when it's hard go hard. He's looking to be a national champ there and he knows what he is talking about. But I mean really if you want to be the fastest I guess you rejoice when videos like this are created. Because this advice will make the masses slower. To each his own but you take your own and I'll take my own and l would love to race you!

    • @gtn
      @gtn  4 роки тому

      I think you've taken some of his comment out of context, his main piece of advice concerned learning a course and figuring out how to find speed, his comments about going easy when it's hard refer more to motivation and perceived exertion during a race effort - obviously there are critical moments where you have to suffer, however over the course of an ironman effort there are plenty of times when conserving physical and mental energy are really important! Thanks for your comment!
