I will say that with the new variants, i do hope that the weapon wheel gets the ability to swap between variants while it is open, because swapping variants on the fly between 3 does not sound fun
I use mousescroll to switch variants. For example, when I switch to pistols, the piercer is selected on default, so I scroll down for the marksman, or scroll up for the sharpshooter. Requires a tiny bit of practice, but is pretty cool once you get used to it

What if... the valve is a new weapon entirely? There is a missing spot between the railcannon and arms in the terminal, whether or not it's a divider I don't know. If it fits no color theme and isn't the yellow arm then it would have to be it's own thing.
