I don't think that I have seen anything that Brian Donlevy has done that I didn't like. Always gives a great performance. Not sure if this quite qualifies as Film Noir, it isn't dark enough.
This movie is fantastic! One of the best I’ve seen from any era. Excellent acting and writing. The copy is clear and sharp. Thank you so much for sharing this gem. One of the bright spots during this time of isolation.
An Excellent Movie! Thanx "Pizza" for Posting it!! Just the Right Mix of Mystery & Treachery with a Sassy Old Police Detective who's like a Bloodhound after the Truth! I Love this Movie!
What a brilliant gem of a movie - I was elated continuously throughout the movie, all the plot twists, great writing and acting. Excellent interaction between all the characters - Brian Donlevy is a Real Star! Thanks so much for posting this treasure!
Thanks for sharing this movie for everyone to see. I remember this movie when it first came out to theaters in 1949. Thanks again for all the great movies of yesteryear that you show it's a pleasure to see them again.
I love this style of movie, there is so much class in the old movies and I feel so lucky to have an appreciation for the movies before the 60's and I have been watching them since I was a kid in the 60's and I can thank my mother for sharing her love for them with me 💜
I had never seen this movie before. It's great, I loved it. It captured the homey feel of small-town America. Even though I grew up in the big city of NY, this atmosphere is what I missed. The story of deceit and attempted murder all contributed to a great yarn. Thank you!
Excellent movie and nice ending. Brian Donlevy was superb, I'm not familiar with him and don't know why he wasn't a bigger star. Thanks for the upload.
The movie writer's had great stories and characters, the best actors, it was filmed in simple black and white film with dramatic lighting and all of this made for good entertainment that is still good today.
Certainly not, and though I enjoyed it so very much, in many numerous ways, it does not come close to matching some of the excellent films being made today. I'm not sure that they make anything the same as then, except for babies, but even some of those are . . .
Seeing Charles Coburn in the Film my first thought was he was going to do some Drama, but in His Own Fashion there is always some Comic Relief. The Movie is very good, and has become a real favorite. Was surprised to see Philip Ahn, I thought He was a younger Man in 1949.
actors in the old movies spoke so clearly and much slower than they do in todays movies , l have such a problem understanding them these days they speak really terrible, mumbling and talking so quickly they don't seem to stop to breath.
Plus it was a bit of a Cliff Hanger Movie that you HAD to watch all the Way to the End! Guess what?? No "Sexy" Scenes like there are Today either!! I bet NOBODY Walked out of the theater in disgust bc of the "Raunchy" Scenes, either!! These ppl took Pride in their work! Most movies of this era were based on books, too!

Enjoyed it a lot. Many arresting plot turns -----had to exercise self-censorship in ordre not to spoil the ending . Two beautiful women make this film a very pleasurable way to spend time.

How i love that fire brigade scene! Very similar i n my village. It was just that we did not have a fire truck. Just one of the firemen was always so proud to bring his water filled manure tank to the scene :))))
Brian Donlevy was a compelling actor, one of my favourites. This is an excellent noir, but his luck in stumbling across a beautiful, cack handed, hammer wielding, female mechanic, some 20 years his junior, and being able to repair any car you could mention, stretched my credulity to it's limits. 😁😁😁 Enjoyable.
@John gosh, don't you pay attention! The garage belonged to her husband that was killed in Okinawa during World War II. She said she had hired managers to run it while her husband was away at war, then when he was killed, she took over managing the gas station herself. Furthermore, their were no mechanics around, so she was stuck with that side of the business, too, which was not going very well.
Impact when two lives come together , sometimes for good and sometimes for evil . And usually neither . just getting along , or hanging out , or chatting over a coffee or beer .
Back in the day, they portrayed Christianity in a positive light like this movie does. Todays movies have an agenda to destroy the family and society in general. I'm so sad they don't make good movies like this anymore that promote doing good. Instead, the opposite is in movies of today.
40:34 The way his face emotes his realization that he'd been conned reminds me of Brian Cranston as Walter White and how that character's thought process when he was scheming would show in his expressions, the shifty/drifty eye thing especially. Love seeing performance influences show up in film history!
I got the sound up. A movie like this, describes once again, that a well written script like this, and great acting, appears to be gone forever. Now...can you take a teenage kid to a film like this, and both enjoy it...? Or a film of today, with the open sex- nudity, and graphic horror, that makes one sick to look at it? Yes, teenagers need a role model. There is none. Thus promotes violence among our teens and pre-teens of today. Plus video games.
Good thing that you harbor no disapproval of an unfaithful wife exploiting her husband's devotion and, with her lover, plotting an act of violence where one man attempts to brutally murder another, by bashing his skull with a tire iron, before callously dumping his body off the road, leaving him for dead.
@@xmillion1704 What? Nowadays we'd be treated to unspeakabley explicit scenes at the muzzle of belt-fed machine guns wielded by crystal meth soused assailants in glorious color with language in Hi-Fi Stereo loud enough to ring our ears. Ever wonder why there's so much more violence among our young?
Enjoyable film, although the plot stretches one's credulity at times. Loved Charles Colburn as the softly-spoken Irish detective who quickly senses that Irene is a bad one. Lovely street scenes from late 1940s San Francisco. Charming interlude in Idaho, giving the film romance as well as suspense. Well worth seeing.
This is an entertaining film (and head and shoulders above most modern Hollywood films made today) but I think that it is more of a melodrama than a noir.

Full of fantasy on the criminal/legal part (lawyers watching gotta forget they're lawyers) but a nice high-morals flick; including touches of spiritual/religious values (what a relief from the base crud produced from H-wood these days). Enjoyable story and acting (by all players). Bad girl gets her due and good girl gets the hero. Me? I'd have opted for returning to small-town life in instead of a rat-race big city (which, in real life, I did 40+ years ago, and NEVER looked back). Thanks again P.F.
Williams has the gash on his head. Torrence drove the car into the oil tanker. The Bekins guys saw him drive off alone. How does this make Williams a murderer? Still, an OK movie. Great street scenes of old USA.
Conrad Gaarder- Fun fact, those few blocks of Magnolia Ave., through downtown Larkspur, CA, (standing in for Idaho), have changed very little. That same building that housed the Fire Dept in the movie, performs the same function still to this very day.
Think they are trying his wife for murder...no one looks for Walter Williams even though the Police know it was Torrance not WW who died in the auto accident.
If you like film noir this is a must see. Brilliantly scripted and solid performances.

This film having the censors approval really takes the worry out of watching right from the start!
Americans were fretful. Stalin had The Bomb. That minor worry aside, 1949 was a very good year.
