Two Kinds of Prayer

  • In this conversation on the two kinds of prayer, a questioner wants to know how she can pray if the nature of language is inherently dualistic. How can she feel connected with God if the words she uses imply a subject-object relationship?
Rupert explains: ‘There are two distinct categories of prayer. One comes from the individual who prays and devotes themself to God. This is a valid form of prayer, and it places the individual in the right relationship to the whole - one of love, adoration and devotion.
‘In the other form of prayer, there is no room for the individual. As long as there is an individual being, that individual being displaces a part of God’s infinite being. If God’s being is infinite, it must be the only being there is. ‘I am’ is one of the doorways to this second type of prayer. It is a prayer in which the individual is surrendered and dissolved. The ultimate prayer and the highest devotion to God would be to sound the divine name, ‘I am’, once and to allow oneself to be drawn into its referent.’

Prayer is a wordless conversation of the mind with the divine essence of itself and the divine is the eternal and infinite presence that gives existence to the Self and the universe.
    Thank you Rupert,

How wonderful this gentleman is, and how wonderful are the quality and sincerity of his students. Tremendous lesson, not only in a teaching, if not for him, I would have overlooked, but an equally important lesson in what human interaction should be when approached with appreciation and reverence for each other.

Most prayers are wanting something. Please give me or please give that person. Thinking that a creator needs to be asked for anything and everything. Not many people would speak to a creator in the way suggested. It’s a sense of dissatisfaction and need.

We are separate only to the extent that we FEEL separate.
We are alone only to the extent that we FEEL alone.
So make time to be alone and use that time to find out WHY you feel alone.
What in your life experience has caused you to disconnect from your inner divine space, and by extension from the whole of divinity?
Sometimes the disconnection and re-connection has to be deeply felt and experienced in order to be deeply and fully understood... 🙏💜🌲

For me in the “Lord Prayer” Jesus found a wonderful device to mix both the individual prayer with the non dual prayer just by naming God as FATHER because the “Father and the Son” are not TWO.

The thing is... if your initial education is "I and Thou"... along the lines of the famous Martin Buber phrase and book, which is so classic for so many of us... and really, all three of the Abrahamic traditions... well, doesn't the initial language right off the bat kind of mislead?

Unfortunately, to the mind, being is extremely subtle and seemingly ungraspable. And if you start looking for it or try to practice abiding there, it's like trying to kiss your own lips.

Yep - but how easily misinterpreted that can be, even to the point of creating fear! In other words, don’t be mislead by thinking that it’s necessary to do certain things or carry out certain acts, to realise God. Even those things that might be perceived as ‘good’ from an Earthly perspective can distract from Seeing.

There are many claims, many teachings, many theories, and many beliefs on the nature of Existence Itself.
Every claim, every teaching, every theory and every belief has its own following, each believing that they have the right teaching over the others.
People have argued, fought and debated over whether or not God exists for thousands of years. And, it continues.
The Buddha is probably one of the most renowned human beings if not the most, to mankind for debunking the common belief concerning God, the Brahman, using reason and logic, which were uncommon to the believers ,believing in the existence of Brahman at the time.
The Buddha concluded, that, he has found no credible evidence in his investigation for the existence of the deity Brahman or God.
Pointing to the likely possibility that indeed, the existence of Brahman or God was none other than human creation. Therefore false.
You can imagine the kinds of reactions he would receive from the believers of Brahman.
Rupert quoting the Indian sage Shankaracharya shows, that, he is also a follower of this philosophy, believing in the existence of Brahman or God.
The Buddha went even further by saying that ,the belief in the existence of Brahman and atman were totally false, thus, began his new teaching on Anatman, which simply means, no self or Self.
If the Buddha is correct then, Rupert and all the followers in the teachings of Shankaracharya are completely wasting their time, entertaining false notions. And,Vice versa.
Whatever the case may be, it sure tells us one thing for sure.
That, we can never be too careful or be contemplative enough, when it comes to understanding the true nature of ourselves, or Existence as Is in Itself.

Buddha said that Emptiness exists. Only nothing exists. That means there is some global existence. Buddhist call it no self. Vedantist call is Brahman. You can choose your own verb (because it's not a noun), doesn't make a difference on this global existence. Peace.

I'll take life itself. Which to me, means, happiness, love & joy & if I might, stuffed cabbage! As far as existence, to me, that has no meaning. Kapeesh?

    • @joajoajb
      @joajoajb 2 місяці тому +2

@@devanshudesperadoFirst of all, I'm not a buddist. But,I'm afraid you're mistaking what the Buddha was saying.
By, emptiness, he was implying that there's no such thing as an existence that has its own independent existence apart from everything else. Everything including Brahman and atman. In other words, No God or Brahman .
In vedantic philosophy, Brahman or God means consciousness. A consciouness that has its own existence in the absence of everything else. This was completely denied by the Buddha as an illusion and a delusion.
The Buddha saw consciousness(knowingness)as one of the components (aggregates) interdependent with all the other components, thus, having no independent existence of its own. Thus, All is empty of its own independent existence. Thus, the new teaching of Anatman, simply means , no such thing as an independent self or Self. Simply, No self, or No Self. No atman, No Brahman.
One can never be too careful, nor be contemplative enough, if it comes to the true nature of oneself or Existence Itself.
You take good care of yourself!

The Ultimate prayer is “just being” -
Not being “this” or “that” - (which is the illusion of being a separate body-mind).
      Just Being
      is God’s Being -
      the only One there Is…
      I Am,
      which is
      Silence and Fullness
