I would love to see a more detailed video on how you linked the lights and switches in your daughter's room. Video is amazing, I am slowly getting into home automation and love your channel.
Great video as always. A word of caution if you attach a dimmer to a standard outlet: Many years ago, when video cameras were high-end tech and cost 1/4 of a typical car, I plugged a high-end video camera into an outlet in a theatre. Tested it and all worked fine. Then started recording the performance. A little way in the Lighting guy in the AV control room pulled down all the dimmers and the AC outlet I was connected to was one of them. It completely fried the power supply unit _and_ the power circuit in the camera. Be very careful what you connect downstream of a dimmer.
Thank you for your informative videos, just ordered 2 Shelly dimmers! Going to dim the lights next to my tv and my hallway lights based on the time of day
Wow that sounds really cool! I wish I understood at least some of that tho. Is it possible to use this to be able to control a light switch via voice commands with Alexa AND the switch? Some times I walk into my bed room and just want to be able to turn on the light via the switch and the turn it off once I exit, but I also want to be able to turn the light off via voice or the app when I'm already in bed. Is there a way to do that?
I have a handful of Shellies and they are very reliable. The only gripe I have ( common to most of these types of devices ) is the screw terminals. When connecting 14 AWG solid wires, I have had a tough time squeezing the thing back into the box without dislodging wires. I finally solved that by using stranded wire on the Shelly and using Wago connectors ( I guess you could use wire nuts. Ugh! ) to attach the solid wires. It takes up more space, but really makes it more reliable. This also makes it easier to remove or replace the Shelly since you don't need a screwdriver. I gave up on the Sonoff devices because of the skimpy PC traces that overheated and destroyed the device. I fixed a couple by soldering wires to the back of the PCB, but that is a lot of work to solve a simple problem. It is interesting that the eMylo devices ship with the Wago connectors.
I think the key to using solid core wire is planning out how it will be bent before attaching it to the shelly. I get all my wires stripped, then hold them in one hand and stuff them back in the box to where the shelly will eventually live. This helps get them bent/folded in the right place, then pull them back out and attach the shelly.
@@TheHookUp That's a good solution too. I'm still not thrilled with the screw connectors. I still have a few boxes without the Wagos and they seem to work OK once they are "stuffed".
These look like they would potentially help my setup in my new to me house. A 50's build with a couple updates here/there. I have switches that control outlets, but have a ceiling fan+light un-switched. Seems I could pair these in the ceiling with a smart switch to wirelessly control the light without having to run a new wire to the light in the fan and leave the outlets un-switched.

I saw that you had Shelly videos and knew you’d break it down well and you did. I was stoked about the innovelli switches because of being able to disable the relay but these may be another solution
Thanks Rob! Awesome video as always. Note of caution, it is bad practice, and probably a code violation, to attach a dimmer to an outlet. What if the in-laws come over for the holidays and plug in their iPhone charger to that dimmer controlled power strip or outlet? I don't know honestly. What happens? I feel like it wouldnt be good.

I'm looking for smart switch/relay that will switch on/off a 12v DC LED light used in an RV or auto? It needs to be fairly thin in size. Preferably Zigbee or wifi protocol. Any suggestions?
Does it keep constant power to the light if you turn the light off at the switch? The problem I have (like many other people) is that if someone else at my house turns off the switch then my automations won't work so I was wondering if this Shelly device would solve my problem. I know that actual smart switches can do this but I don't have neutral wires at my house so I can't have them. Unfortunately, Lutron Caseta would be an option which doesn't require neutral but it's not certified for Australia.
Question: I am not quite familiar with wiring up devices and I am trying to understand. @ 2:30 the video goes over how you can wire up a Shelly 1, to xmas lights because of its dry contacts. Why wouldn't you be able to do the same thing via Shelly 1pm, or Shelly 2.5 ?
I've got a Shelly Relay idea!!! My Thermador gas cooktop, in my kitchen, has a 120v indicator light when a bank of burners is on. More than once, I have left my house wondering if the cooktop was on!!! How about using a relay that, when powered, AND when Geofencing notices that I am not in the house, sends a text command to my phone saying that a gas burner is ON? Which relay would be best for that?
Im looking to make my office ceiling fan smart or able to control it remotely. I only have a single light switch to the fan witch only supplies power. I would like to be able to control the light and the fan depending on the time of day and temp in my office? Is there any way the Shelly device would work for me?
I am looking to add some LED strips to a home bar i am building. There will be 4 glass or acrylic shelves each with 24V RGB LED strips behind them. Each shelf will always display the same color when on. How many of which Shelly controller would i need for the 4 strips. Does it matter if they are not all connected to each other or do they need to be? I will also want to add one long 24V RGB LED strip under the counter again controlled by a Shelly unit. Which would be the right product for this? Thank you in advance for your help. I will order from your links.

Great channel.. In your opinion...do you think the Shelly pm would run a 110v 1500 watt pool pump ? Haven’t found anything that is reliable for this application without overheating...keep up the work!!
Is there anymore support for US based no neutral wiring? I have an older home and this seems like a cheaper option for me than a bunch of Lutron switches.
Hi, Very interesting videos! I am new to the this smart revolution and trying to catch up :-) Which Shelly device can I use to control a towel warmer? I need an ‘auto off’ function for my warmer. Thanks
Ordered a Shelly1 to do my Christmas tree like yours. Any instructions on that? I assume it just interrupts the power wire after the foot switch but how will I know which wire is the power wire?
Could I wire a Shelby Dimmer into an old (circa 1930s) table fan to control the speed by “dimming” the power? If this is not a good idea, how about just a Shelly 1 to make the fan Wi-Fi capable?
So the Shelly 1 PM wouldn't be good for using to simulate button presses? i was following the garage door tutorial but i thought the shelly 1 pm would be useful for hte voltage and temp gage, but if only the shell1 has a 12v mode then I need to return the shelly 1 pm?
Good video 👍, one use for the Shelly 2.5 or PM1 is connected to a power point of a TV setup, and when the power use drops to a standby level (the tv is off) the power is cut entirely, via an automation. It can save a lot in power usage in some cases $60 a year.

Hello, the problem is that I cannot order the shelly 2.5 from outside the house with the cloud, I have activated the cloud from internet by IP, it can be seen that it is activated, but no is it that there is a cloud problem?
Hello Rob, I began to see these single live relays say the Shelly Dimmer SL and some of ORVIBO's, how does it not require a neutral wire? How does that work? Thanks in advance!
shelly dimmer supports 2 switches to controll dimming. is there any possibility to detect switches turned on and off without controling dimmer? i would like to use second switch for something else
I'm thinking about putting a 2.5 in the first box of my 3way lighting. There's no other way I can think of to keep a device powered w/o rewiring the circuit. I have the type 3 wiring from DrZzs video. 2 relays can simulate a SPDT (3-way) switch and power monitoring can sense a downstream switch state. HA automation can handle the footwork of displaying on/off status vs power threshold. Dumb switch just toggles the Shelly relays' state.
Love your videos, . I did today an installation of multiple shelly dimmers. I have an interesting scenario. In my dining room I have 14 lights of 17w each exceeding the 220w maximum of the dimmer. So I split the load on 2 dimmers (still fits in the box) with 4 push buttons, on a single gang decora. I wonder how I can have both dimmers synch the brightness (and on/off) . So they work as a single unit... In tesmota we could have done rules, but unfortunately the shelly dimmer cannot use tesmota as of now.. Can probably achieve it with node red flows, but its getting complicated..
Love the video, so good ideas. Would love to know more about your daughters room setup. My son saw it and wants it now lol. Just two other question. Can you tell me how to active the MQTT section. Just can’t seem to find it for my 2.5 or the advanced development section Also would you flash with Tas or leave it on the app with MQTT
You may have already discussed this but what is your opinion of the new working group Project Connected Home over IP? Do you think this will make it possible for smart devices like Shelly do you work with HomeKit?
Say... Since you already did your own DIY Smart Curtains, would you happen to know if it would be possible to repurpose a Shelly 2.5 and their rolling shutter / end stop sensing functionality to do a simple DIY Smart Curtains build using a regular motor instead of the stepper shenanigans?
Using 3 RGBW2's to control the cabin lights on my boat. all light strips. Running the Shelly's in white mode, but from one of them I pull cable to the Red LED on the strip to have night vision friendly light as well. Running Openplotter and (trying) to get a grip on MQTT/Node red to rule them all. :-D Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm using a shelly 2.5 for a light and a ceiling fan. In home asstants shelly inagration there is a shelly temperature sensor. I guess is is for the device. It is reading 155°F with the fan and light on. Is that normal. When I touch the shelly case it don't fell that hot. Please help I need to know if this is ok. Thank you
Planning to buy bunch of these to automate lights locally in HA. Is it possible to use the dimming option of the Shelly dimmer as well as the manual dimming option of the actual switch? Basically my requirement is to automate the lights (Dim and switch on/off on certain times of the day), but need the manual dimmer of the actual switch to function whenever required. Any suggestion / recommendations ?
Just a heads up, the link here shelly.cloud/wifi-smart-home-automation-shelly-dimmer/ shows the pinout for the header for the Shelly Dimmer. It's the wrong way round. Just to clarify. I did a continunity test and can confirm the pins are the reverse of whats in the picture on the site. With the reset button on the right the left most pin is Gnd then 3v3, GPIO0, GPIO2, RX, with TX next to the reset button.
Since forums nor reddit have been helpful, maybe you can help. I have a Shelly 1 that activates a siren in case of panic. I've gotten it to work as a doorbell buzzer, by configuring it to auto-turn off in 0.5 seconds. So, when I press the button, it signals the alarm siren to start, and then it remains on until I press the button again. This is the way it should work, so I have no issues with that. Were the problem arises is that after the 0.5 second delay the light on the shelly or Alexa or Google turns OFF even if the siren is still blaring. If I press the button again it send the pulse and stops. In other words this is not a switch with an on/off state, but a buzzer that you press once to turn on and once to turn off. How do I set up the Shelly 1 to send the 0.5 second pulse and indicate it is ON until it is pressed again? I would really appreciate your help guys. TIA Alex 0 Co
@@TheHookUp it is set to "momentary". If I remove the OFF in 0.5 second timer then the siren turns on, then off, then on, then off, etc. until I press the button again.

With all this talk of shoving things into electrical boxes, I think some discussion of The Electrical Code is in order, highlighting volume requirements based on box size and type, expected load, number of switches, wire gauge, etc. It's only fair, no?
I like the shelly line- up but I need a shelly unit that can be connected to a digital timer and when the timer signals that it is time for a number outside to be turned on or and off, that the shelly unit sends out a wi-fi or Bluetooth signal to all the other shelly controllers to turn on or off. please get shelly to work on that one.
I have been looking for an alternative to mysa with energy monitoring for inline voltage smart thermostat for baseboard heat and cannot find anything. Ideally no hub and no external relays, but will take into consideration. For a new heater I need to add, was thinking to just buy a 1000W 120v heater and use the ShellyPM in line with a cheap double pole Honeywell thermostat, or use a sonoff th-16 with attachable thermostat (but ideally want the pm for energy monitoring) However all my existing heaters are 2 line 240v. The Shelly pm can handle 3500W but says it requires a neutral, which on a 240v 2 line heater in US, means no neutral. Any ideas? Is there Something out there that could work and still fit in the baseboard electrical box?
Great video, my question is, I live in an old old house, my switch in the room only controls the outlets in the room, doesn’t control the lights, I have a fan with lights that I want to control from the switch, can I do this with Shellys?
Hi. I would like to ask if the Shelly 1 can be used out of the box with the Smartlife android app. If not, can custom firmware such as Tasmota enable me to use this app? My Shelly 1 will be connected behind a traditional toggle switch to control a lamp. My aim through the Smartlife app is to simply toggle power on and off. Thanks
I hope there is an answer to this. I was told to give both Shelly's a static IP address when one is referenced within the URL of the other.? But my ISP changes my home's IP address every month and to get a static IP Address is not possible without a third party like noip.com... getting more complicated. Did you give your Shelly's a static IP?
Hi! What you did with Shelly dimmer case is exactly what I want to do. But I am wondering: with this solution, you can not garanty anymore that the N of your power plus will go on the N of the Shelly. So L and N may be inverted on Shelly. Is that a problem?
could you compare shelly dimmer control with fibaro dimmer 2 ? i'm looking to replace theme with a wifi based dimmer, but autocalibration, none-linear curve, blownout bulb alarm are sweet. and i don't know how shelly dimmer work with a single momentary switch.

Unfortunately, Lutron Caseta would be an option which doesn't require neutral but it's not certified for Australia.
Question:
I am not quite familiar with wiring up devices and I am trying to understand.
Great comparison, very useful. Thank you.
I only have one ? everything today seems to work from a phone which is great ,however can I use the shelly components with a Mac pc ? if so what program is available
Great channel.. In your opinion...do you think the Shelly pm would run a 110v 1500 watt pool pump ? Haven’t found anything that is reliable for this application without overheating...keep up the work!!
is there a shelly that will be able to control a ceiling fan?
Will these work with native 12v systems? I'm looking to separately dim, via app or remote, multiple lighting zones on an RV
at 7:19, i think the bulb is missing a wire. how to wire it correctly to the Shelly Dimmer?
Think you could do a video on how to add a shelly to a swamp cooler switch? I'd love to automate my home swamp cooler
Is there anymore support for US based no neutral wiring? I have an older home and this seems like a cheaper option for me than a bunch of Lutron switches.
Hello. Which Shelly should I use in case that I want to put a touch button?
Hi,
Very interesting videos!
I am new to the this smart revolution and trying to catch up :-)
Which Shelly device can I use to control a towel warmer? I need an ‘auto off’ function for my warmer. Thanks
Why a 3D printed case for the dimmer? It also fits into the Shelly button case :-)
Ordered a Shelly1 to do my Christmas tree like yours. Any instructions on that? I assume it just interrupts the power wire after the foot switch but how will I know which wire is the power wire?
It's AC power, both are the power wire.
@@TheHookUp ok so I’m just interrupting one of the two wires from the foot switch to the tree with the shelly1?
@@DIYReid Yep, that's what I did.
Good stuff! FYI, looks like the Facebook page link is wrong or down.
Thanks, I think I fixed it.
And it's not a page, it's a group.
Could I wire a Shelby Dimmer into an old (circa 1930s) table fan to control the speed by “dimming” the power? If this is not a good idea, how about just a Shelly 1 to make the fan Wi-Fi capable?
Shelly products are of a really great quality!
Us the Shelly rgbw module, with a pwn to 0-10v chip ;) fancoils, motor regulators, meanwell 0-10v elg transformers, the sky is the limit :) i have currently set up over a kw of leds, with the control of only one rgbw module
Excellent video Rob. Nice to see the complete Shelly lineup. I like to see the quality and the UL approved devices.
What are you running your home assistant on? My SD card on my RPi blew up and I need to restart. Heading to FB to join yours and Shellys groups. Thanks
I’ve got ha on the same machine that runs my Plex server and blue iris (running in virtual box)
Again great video! I'm wondering if you can answer this. I have 2 lights (G9 bulbs) which can be switched on/off at the same time with 3 physical switches. 2 located downstairs and 1 upstairs. Could I use a Shelly to make them switch on/off through homeassistant? I have neutral.
So if I want to keep smart bulbs powered but allow the use of the wall switch for people that don't listen to me, do I use the Shelly 1, PM or 2.5?
Can the yellow one (RGB2?) be used for my fireplace wall switch which seems to be low voltage?? Thanks!
Hello, the problem is that I cannot order the shelly 2.5 from outside the house with the cloud, I have activated the cloud from internet by IP, it can be seen that it is activated, but no is it that there is a cloud problem?
All the wasted years.... where has this been all my life?? This will change everything!
Did you put a scope on the output for the Dimmer module to see what the wave form looks like when it dims?
A little late to the party with the comments, but I agree that the Shelly products work very well.
Dimitar Dimitrov, said he liked my idea he might add such an option on future FW release,
Love the video, so good ideas. Would love to know more about your daughters room setup. My son saw it and wants it now lol.
Just two other question. Can you tell me how to active the MQTT section. Just can’t seem to find it for my 2.5 or the advanced development section
Also would you flash with Tas or leave it on the app with MQTT
Sorry to get to the MQTT option you need to access the device via web browser and not the Shelly app. Everyday is a school day 🤓🤓
In Canada the shelly devices are 6x more expensive than sonoff. So that's definitely a stretch from comparison ... :(
You may have already discussed this but what is your opinion of the new working group Project Connected Home over IP?
Could you post each of these device idle power draw while connected to a wifi signal?
all of them are
Can you add a tactile dimming method without the app on a phone, like on the wall or device?
Thanks
Does it work with Amazon Alexa and Samsung Smartthings?
Just a heads up, the link here shelly.cloud/wifi-smart-home-automation-shelly-dimmer/ shows the pinout for the header for the Shelly Dimmer. It's the wrong way round. Just to clarify. I did a continunity test and can confirm the pins are the reverse of whats in the picture on the site. With the reset button on the right the left most pin is Gnd then 3v3, GPIO0, GPIO2, RX, with TX next to the reset button.
Am I right that I can wire only one device to Shelly1 simultaneously?
TIA Alex

In the web interface set the button type to "momentary"
@@TheHookUp it is set to "momentary". If I remove the OFF in 0.5 second timer then the siren turns on, then off, then on, then off, etc. until I press the button again.
I just installed the shelly 1 its awesome. but doesn't quite fit in my circuit box. it has detached mood which rocks hard.
I use it to turn on Wled
Thank you.
Does your switch have a neutral connection?
The Hook Up I’m pretty sure I have neutral on the switch and on the fan canopy
Do you have a video about the dimmer with the box you 3d printed?
As usual fantastic video!!
Thanks
Tasmota and the SwitchModes are very interesting 👍🏼
I'm looking for a way to turn my dumb washing/dryer machine in a smart one with Shelly EM. Any ideas?
I hope there is an answer to this. I was told to give both Shelly's a static IP address when one is referenced within the URL of the other.? But my ISP changes my home's IP address every month and to get a static IP Address is not possible without a third party like noip.com... getting more complicated. Did you give your Shelly's a static IP?
They meant a static local IP, not your external IP. Local IP addresses are assigned by your router, not by your ISP.
Hi! What you did with Shelly dimmer case is exactly what I want to do. But I am wondering: with this solution, you can not garanty anymore that the N of your power plus will go on the N of the Shelly. So L and N may be inverted on Shelly. Is that a problem?
In the US the plugs have polarity, the bigger slot is neutral
Dimmer supported by Tasmota? didn't see on their list; also the programming pins on the shelly dimmer are TINY :)
Doesn’t look like it is yet
Great video as always Rob!
FYI, your link for the facebook group isn't working for me.
Thanks, I think I fixed it

@@TheHookUp Yes, thank you!
Can i use the shelly 1 to detect the nest door bell by connecting at the chime?
But for simple stuff like light switches isn't better to just buy an ESP8266 with a relay for $1-2?
could you compare shelly dimmer control with fibaro dimmer 2 ? i'm looking to replace theme with a wifi based dimmer, but autocalibration, none-linear curve, blownout bulb alarm are sweet. and i don't know how shelly dimmer work with a single momentary switch.
Please don't tell people to hook a dimmer to an outlet. That is a NEC code violation in US and s bad idea overall.
Help us non-techs out here. What code section should I look for in the NEC?
@@freddiecarr7602
I don't have my code book in hand so having to rely on Google.
2017 code cycle:
404.14 (E) Dimmer Switches. General-use dimmer switches shall be used only to control permanently installed incandescent luminaires unless listed for the control of other loads and installed accordingly.
Can shelly dimmer can handle 20 garden lights each light around 5w on 240v dc and protected by rcb 16a Thanks
Love your video.. You mention that they can work even not connected to internet? Can you make a video to show how you do that? Thanks
You use them with Home Assistant
I would love homekit support
