Best Inheritance piece ever. I grew up without any connection to firearms but loved them at the age of 8 when I first saw T2 and Arnold spin cocking a 1887 Winchester while riding a Harley Fatboy. I developed this love completely seperate from a relative of mine who is a Vietnam War Marine and former Police Officer. I did not meet him until I was about 15 and by that time I already read nearly anything I could get my hands on about firearms history. Here it is 10 years later and the man and I were great friends and he had basically become my grandfather before he passed away. When he did, he left me his entire collection. He had everything I could imagine from a Savage 99 first generation to his Grandfathers service revolver from the LAPD. The cream of the crop though was the HK 23 he waistband Carried for the last 5 years after finding it used in his local gun shop. I love the feel and the weight as a nice update to the 1911 I am used to carrying and have since transferred my CCW over to the 23. If it was good enough for a 75 year old man with arthritis and a lifetime of wear, it's good enough for me to carry on the tradition.
@SweWince used to when I was about 100 pounds lighter and just starting to carry a gun 4 years ago. What I didn't account for was my grandfather being nearly 6'6 and I am 5'9. Makes a difference that I learned quickly after posting this comment. No, I switched over to carrying a Ruger Speed 6 in the winter and a FEG SMC 380 in the summer.
Senator Armstrong, restoring America to her former glory I hear you. I'm currently in Europe and although the gun laws are outrageous the supply (and prices) of certain weapons are ridiculous. Saw a mint HK P7M13 for less than USD$600. I'm telling you man, they don't know what they're sitting on...
I bought mine in 2012 for 1400 bucks. Still one of my favorite guns. It's the most accurate pistol I own, followed by five seven. I love my mk23. I wish I could carry this giant thing! lol
Razorseal, you can. I carry mine in a leather fanny pack holster. It fits well, it's well-made (from Amazon), and by putting small "karabiners" on the zippers, I don't have to fish around for tiny zipper handles if I need to access the gun compartment quickly. I even installed a GG&G pic rail attachment on it, along with a Surefire X-400 Ultra (1,000-lumen white weapon light & green laser combo unit). It fits quite well and is nowhere as "huge" as most people might think..!! Sure, sometimes if I'm making a mad dash to a local store, I might just resort to slipping a S&W M49 Bodyguard revolver into a pants pocket & off I go. But for any longer trips than that - my HK Mk 23 is always my "go to" gun...!! Also, consider this: the standard-sized Colt 1911 (5" bbl & slide, steel frame) empty weight is 42oz. The empty weight (mag installed but no ammo) of the Mk 23 is 39oz - 3oz less than a standard-sized 1911. Now the gun doesn't seem so "huge", does it...?? :-)
shooting a manly ass gun and pointing out to thousands of gun enthusiasts how small your hands are is a good indicator of self-confidence, idk why it stood out to me
I bought this pistol 9 years ago and it’s a beast! As an avid reloader I came across some B stock cases and bullets, loaded them up with nothing to lose. After friends/family Glocks/Xds/ and Les Baer 1911s failed I fired them all flawlessly. Best gun I own!
Ive owned a Mark 23 for some time and is is a very big gun almost seems like it needs to come with a shoulder stock. I do agree it’s very accurate but I also own a HK USP tactical and a FNX tactical and they seem to be more reasonably sized and also very accurate. All in all I wouldn’t sell my Mark 23 tho it is a very cool gun.
You know the FNX Tactical is about the only pistol I'd ever consider over an HK, ran both and tbh it's apples and...well, apples imo Can't speak about other FN offerings (Edit I do own an FN AR that's swanky, but this is about pistols) but that FNX is amazeballs Edit: I will say that FNX holding 17 rds of .45 didn't feel like 17 rds of .45, but I also have gorilla hands, so to each their own I guess. Comfy, well shooting, well thought-out tool
Colion, I wish you would have touched a little more on the mag release and how it was designed to be used. Many people hate it in the US market because it "feels weird" or they can't reach it with their thumb, yet H&K have stated numerous times that European soldiers prefer it and train using their index finger to release the magazine. It's far more intuitive and quick once you adapt to it and I with every handgun on the market would adopt it. Ignorance is bliss I suppose though. Great review of one of my absolute, favorite combat handguns!
i didn't like it at first mostly because it was "non standard" but i agree, it is far superior and i love using my index finger since i don't have to alter my grip. i think a lot of american gun enthusiasts instinctively hate anything that doesn't copy the "holy grail" 1911
I own quite a few "cool guy" stuff. The mk23 is one of those. It is a joy to shoot and would be the last handgun i would ever sell. This and my scar17 are the only 2 id ever need
HK Parts Co. makes an extended, 17-round magazine. $120 a copy. Or, you can buy the "+5" bottom & extended mag spring kit, & convert your 12-rounder into a 17-rounder. I bought 20 of their 17-round mags. A standard 12-rounder in the gun to begin with; reload with 17-rounders. You get a choice of red or black colored aluminum bottoms. Great product...!! :-)
My friend bought a USP .45 and only time I shot it I loved it. First .45 I ever shot and it was easy to handle. He taught me how to dissemble and clean and by far the easiest handgun to do so that I've shoot.
So yah it's expensive as hell but I don't regret buying it at all even if it was 1950$. They are a lot lighter than you expect them to be and are still manageable by a guy with average size hands. The way I figure it's still cheaper than a wilson combat or nighthawk 1911 and is every bit as accurate with 100 times the durability. At the range with a row of guys shooting high end 1911's the guy with the MK23 is getting all the love.
It's a hard pill to swallow spending almost $2000 on a polymer frame handgun. But it's one of those guns you'll have zero regrets purchasing...unless you wanted to EDC it.
These "older" Colion videos are so good - they seem to be better than the current ones as far as script, sound, editing, camera angles, film-maker stuff...
Great review! So far one of the only decent ones of the MK23. My only gripe is that the game clip you used is from MGS2, where Snake used the USP. The MK23 only appeared in MGS1 as the USSOCOM and MGS4, but I'm splitting hairs. Keep doing great reviews! Maybe some more HK firearms?
Liam Shelton You're right. It crossed my mind. Snake uses the M9 tranquilizer pistol and the USP9 during the Tanker mission. It was Raiden who used the Mk23 during the Big Shell Incident. In MGS1 Snake used it all the way to the end and you can find it under the truck in MGS4 during the Moses Island visit. Take care, man!
I love this video! I remember watching it 7 years ago, and loving it then too. I am actually buying a HK Mark 23. I have always wanted one. I think they are insanely robust and reliable. If I was to need a well tested gun for SHTF scenario, I’d grab the Mark 23 first.
I own three of them - two have GG&G pic rails and Surefire X-400 Ultra's (1,000 lumen white weapon lights with green lasers) mounted on them and I always carry one concealed in a fanny pack holster..!! That should tell you what I think of this magnificent handgun..!! :-) I was born & raised a "1911" guy, but after the Mk 23, while I still have a lot of 1911's in my gun safe, the Mk 23 is my "go to" gun for any action..!!
I loved it in all the games i played as a kid and got it for a shit hit the fan gun.. turns out i have been using it as a sidearm while boar hunting with my 45-70. In florida we got thick brush and swamps, after my last few trips i wouldnt trust any other handgun in that environment. Its perfect on my kenai chest rig holster. 10/10 will never sell! Also i have been keeping track of the # of rds gone through it, close to 1800 mixed with +p. Never an issue, never a jam, never a ftf, literally the most perfect pistol.
Damn it Colion, I was waiting for the Wilson Combat Beretta Brigadier 92G to show up. I'm six weeks out but my dealer can get me this machine in a week. Tough. Tough. Tough decision. I've contemplated the MK23 for about a year now but wasn't sure. I only purchase handguns and carbines that are combat worthy to me. I don't plink and I do not like to static shoot. It all comes down to real world scenarios. I think this video of this machine made the decision for me. Thank you sir...Stay well By the By...nice production
I carried this in Iraq during my tours there with 5th SFG(A) and loved it. Reliable and accurate, straight out of the box. This is the sidearm the Glockachus love to hate.
The only reason I'm a Glock guy is because the MK23 is to expensive for my wallet and too big for my pants. But otherwise, I'd 100% carry one and say "Kept you waiting, huh?" while wearing a bandana.
I had an opportunity to shoot this gun this past weekend. Easily my favorite of the day. I couldn't believe how ridiculously accurate and comfortable it was shoot. I love this gun.
Fantastic video! The Mark 23 is one of my favorite handguns of all time, second only to the USP (FANBOY ALERT). I love how well spoken you are when you do these reviews, its very refreshing compared to a number of other youtube firearm video producers.
Wonderful handgun. I had the Airsoft version when I was in high school, and finally got to run a few magazines through one several years ago. The felt recoil is comparable to a polymer-framed 9x19mm, the sights are very easy to acquire and the accuracy is unbelievably outstanding. I will be getting one someday, but I think an AR15 and M1A are ahead of it on my 'must-have' list.
This was my sidearm of choice during my many operations . Never jammed when wet or bring in mud. It’s a tank and kept me alive many times.matched with the osprey 45 suppressor and a can of Co2. Deadly.
For a tactical home defense pistol I always toss up between the hk mk23, the hk usp tactical, the FN FNX tactical, or the FN five seven. They're all so damn nice. I feel like the mk23 is just the beast of handguns.
OMG NERDGASM metal gear! that game is what initially inspired me to get a USP. i loved how in MGS2 finally finding the USP on olga felt so empowering since all you had before was a tranq gun, and the sound quality was amazing. kojima's team are all gun nuts so they put in a lot of effort to make the guns feel more "significant" than other games.
Thank you colion, I bought a hk 45 tactical back in 2001, and the store had a MK 23 there, even though the 23 was way more, stil to this day I wish id spent the extra... 800 for it
I finally got to shot one last weekend with a SilencerCo Hybrid 46 suppressor attached. It was unbelievable! Took off the suppressor and was shot at a 10 inch plate at 25 yards. It’s by far the most accurate 45ACP pistol I’ve ever ran. It’s one of the few “unicorns” that actually lives up to the hype
Oh my dream HK I shot the USP tactical, and was blown away by how accurate, and at distance indoor range put target 50yards down, hit centre every shot! And I usually drift to left most times I aimed with large sights in centre mass and hit there awesome pistols.
correction: after 30.000 shots, the test was completed. they fired ANOTHER 30.000 shots through the gun and inspected it afterwards. other than the burnt up rubber o-ring, which enhances the accuracy, the gun did NOT show any signs of excessive use.
Glad to see someone caught and corrected that "began to eat itself" comment. The Mark 23 DID NOT begin eating itself during trials. Also, no need to shift grip for mag release paddle, just use trigger finger, not the thumb. 🙄
Holy crap!!! Did anybody else see what I just saw? At the scene starting at 7:24 you can see those fat 45s actually flying down range in real time. Even easier in the slowmo. The sun angle and the dark background cause a glint off the bullet when firing on target number 1. So freaking cool!!!
Great Review! Great gun, I am buying one in the next month or so. I will use it for open carry, and bringing with me for hunting trips. The 5.87' barrel makes it legal to hunt with. I am glad that the HK MK23 exist. And I will defend this gun any day! It is a great pistol. And I think that once one could really master it, they could fight through a war zone with it taking down enemies from 0 all the way to 100+ yards. I am glad Hk still makes it to this day. The HK MK23 is a beast. Remember guys, When they tested this gun, they shot like 36,000 rounds of +P+ ammo though it, then salt sprayed it, dirt sprayed it, heated it to 157F, then cooled it to below -0 and kept shooting trying to get a break down, they also stuck a live 45 acp round in the tip of the barrel then shot! It left a small buldge in the barrel, but it still shot 4" groups at 25 meters. That is just incredible!

@@GulagPower "just like old times"
Good call on snake giving raiden the mk23 tho. We _did_ get to play around with the gun in mgs2 after all!
I was born & raised a "1911" guy, but after the Mk 23, while I still have a lot of 1911's in my gun safe, the Mk 23 is my "go to" gun for any action..!!
I have just ordered an MK23... without having fired one. I am in no doubt I won't regret it. Great vid!
You will not regret it. I promise. I bought mine without shooting one and I loved it!
I can't wait ! :) Enjoy yours in good health.
You definitely won't regret it. It's an amazing pistol. Congrats!!
MK 23, one my favorite pistols, clearly an underrated one as the 1911’s get too much respect.
Thank you sir...Stay well
By the By...nice production
The Mk. 23 is by far my favorite firearm. It warms a special place in my heart that you mentioned Metal Gear Solid. Great review.
I want this dude telling my life story after I’m gone. No homo
EQUILIBRIUM: If u can fire 2 in each hand get your GUN KATA ON. when the ammo runs out some body getting a hell of a pistol whipping.
Actually the guns used were Beretta 92FS
I had an opportunity to shoot this gun this past weekend. Easily my favorite of the day. I couldn't believe how ridiculously accurate and comfortable it was shoot. I love this gun.
Fantastic video! The Mark 23 is one of my favorite handguns of all time, second only to the USP (FANBOY ALERT). I love how well spoken you are when you do these reviews, its very refreshing compared to a number of other youtube firearm video producers.
my kinda guy
No shit. So many of these "reviewers" are just flat idiots...!!
I swear you have the most thought out and best narrated reviews on you tube. Better than any gun mag out there. Thanks.
I'd take this firearm over any Glock or 1911 any day.
try the G19 Gen 5 first, also the mark 23 doesn't come in 9 mm which a lot of people like
@@asoongUSMC I like the 27 Gen 5
Hell yeah!!
I had a Glock slide come off once when I chambered a round-NEVER AGAIN, brother...
If youre looking for something like the MK23 but in 9mm, get a USP 9mm.
You have maybe the best commentaries on this platform. A great listen . Totally cool I might ad. Big respect
"The ergonomics of a bowling ball with no holes in it...." Nice! Love your reviews man, keep up the great work!
This was my sidearm of choice during my many operations . Never jammed when wet or bring in mud. It’s a tank and kept me alive many times.matched with the osprey 45 suppressor and a can of Co2. Deadly.
Recoil system fighting off recoil "like white blood cells fighting infection" (6:50). Gotta love your hyperbole! This is one of your classics.
***** We should petition HK to develop a newer version and call it the MK 23 A1
Intellectual Slacker In 10MM!
@@Apathesis0 Fuck no
In 50 AE, 45 ACP, and 44 Mag would be cool
We should ask them to roller-delay it
the more i watch from this channel the more i like it
"LT.......Rules of Engagement?"
"We're Already Engaged."
Bruh...!!! Your eloquent, practical yet technical narrative is an incredible love song worthy of this epic gun!
7:30 You can see the bullets mid flight. Love it when that happens.
This gun has just joined the list of guns I want but can't own because I live in California. Gotta love this place.
you know what they say about people with "small hands"..............
Small gloves.
Hey dude. "No homo", but love the way you review guns. It's almost live watching soft porn. Lol
Yeah, this guy is good. 100%.
So happy mgs was thrown in there
The Metal Gear Solid reference made you go up so many points in my book.
Robocops off duty conceal carry gun😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
For a tactical home defense pistol I always toss up between the hk mk23, the hk usp tactical, the FN FNX tactical, or the FN five seven. They're all so damn nice. I feel like the mk23 is just the beast of handguns.
The mk 23 is also really cool because if your boat sinks you can float on it until you get rescued it’s so damn big.
one day I will own the Mark 23. until then the usp will have to do.
same here, buddy. same here.
The USP is objectively better. It's the same damn thing just made smaller.
OLDEENGLISH931 Negative.
A weapon to surpass metal gear...
Dat recoil anticipation on the first slowmo though. Lol
Awesome video!
The USP45 is a Mark23C
I'm a USB fanboy too. It was my first big-boy gun, and if I can ever afford one, I'll buy one, even if it's 20 years old, which it probably will be.
0:18 The gun you're actually referencing was an HK USP9 (Olga's gun in MGS2) Iroquois Plisken hands Raiden an HK MK23 later on.
Trigger in single action is smoothest ive ever felt and recoil mellow
Why are you reloading it
Just equip it
And unequip it
lol
Or you could switch to your knife, it’s always faster.
Thank you colion, I bought a hk 45 tactical back in 2001, and the store had a MK 23 there, even though the 23 was way more, stil to this day I wish id spent the extra... 800 for it
whoops he messed up in the footage of metal gear solid 2 you showed that's actually a usp
There is no such thing as "over-engineered". That said, this gun is pretty neat as far as Polymer frames go.
*****
If this gun was too complicated, it wouldn't have survived testing.
+Scowler Overengineering exists. Luger, Mauser C96, 1911, Garand, etc.
burmiester1
That's not over-engineering, that's either incompetence or craftsmanship.
In this case it means the weapon is more robust. Overbuilt to be exceptionally reliable.
product Nine
Which is a damn good thing if you're a scout sniper...
Oh my dream HK I shot the USP tactical, and was blown away by how accurate, and at distance indoor range put target 50yards down, hit centre every shot! And I usually drift to left most times I aimed with large sights in centre mass and hit there awesome pistols.
and it'll shoot .45 super!
But that would greatly increase the wear and longevity.
Hell yes to the mgs2 tanker reference haha. Metal gear is what sparked my gun interest as a kid.
I'm so glad that you like the mark 23, I would have to unsubscribe if you didn't lol
correction: after 30.000 shots, the test was completed. they fired ANOTHER 30.000 shots through the gun and inspected it afterwards. other than the burnt up rubber o-ring, which enhances the accuracy, the gun did NOT show any signs of excessive use.
Glad to see someone caught and corrected that "began to eat itself" comment.
The Mark 23 DID NOT begin eating itself during trials.
Also, no need to shift grip for mag release paddle, just use trigger finger, not the thumb. 🙄
@@jamescampbell4334 exactly 💯
@@jamescampbell4334 i use my middle finger for the mag release btw 🥸
Who was introduced to this gun by SOCOM?
Holy crap!!! Did anybody else see what I just saw? At the scene starting at 7:24 you can see those fat 45s actually flying down range in real time. Even easier in the slowmo. The sun angle and the dark background cause a glint off the bullet when firing on target number 1. So freaking cool!!!
Ive only slept with like 3 people so not hard for me to recall LOL
Charles he's talking about "normal" people....or as we say, "city slickers". lol
Charles guilty
Jake Dunning Still only one... Sad I know lol
I could lie, and say one..... lol
Those are rookie numbers...get ‘em up!
As a St Louis guy, gotta give you props on the Cardinals cap!!!
HK. The brand I want from, but can't afford. Even the VP9 is out of my range at the moment.
Sorry to hear that but know this, once you can get one it will be so worth it.
Just bought one of these for $1700. It's rare to find one under 2K. If you do, get it. I've wanted one for 8 years now. Dream come true guys!
You've sold me on a Mk. 23. Too bad I will have to register it with my gov and must be locked up at all times except on a range...
That's gay
+Water King If open carry was legal in Canada, I would so open carry it :V
***** Or a trapper in the woods, or there's a few loopholes, but not for a Mk 23 or anything.
***** Hey, useful if you're loaded down with camping equipment and want to use it for defense against animals :V
Cifyra I'm assuming you live California like it do 😕
Awesome!!! You did such an incredible job on this video narrating it! Truly awesome!!!! 👏🏻 👍🏻
I'd confidently take my P226 into Hell.
Ditto!
If we go revolvers, I'd go with my Grizzly defense gun: Ruger Redhawk 5.5" .44 mag.
Same. I love my MK25!
First pistol I bought was the MK 25. I need the MK 23.
REEF X mr bro, no lie, I would actually take my MK25 to hell and shoot Satan in his dick lol
Remember guys,
When they tested this gun, they shot like 36,000 rounds of +P+ ammo though it, then salt sprayed it, dirt sprayed it, heated it to 157F, then cooled it to below -0 and kept shooting trying to get a break down, they also stuck a live 45 acp round in the tip of the barrel then shot! It left a small buldge in the barrel, but it still shot 4" groups at 25 meters. That is just incredible!
I keep a mark 23 in a lock box this is bolted in my jeep, for the days my gen 4 Glock 19 won't do the job ;)
Mark 23 and glock 19 in the same sentence?
Thank you for enlighten me. I have seen the light now. The HK Model 23 will be my next gun.
