Fun fact : the Metal Gear Solid MK23 is based on the phase 2 model, since the staff based its design on the Tokyo Marui MK23, an airsoft reproduction of the phase 2 model. [edit] Actually I got that wrong. The Tokyo Marui MK23 has been released in 2002, so it was 4 years after the release of Metal Gear Solid 1. Tokyo Marui probably released the MK23 as a reference to Metal Gear Solid 1, not the other way around. I still believe it explains why the game uses a FAMAS G1 and a PSG1 (they were both available as Tokyo Marui airsoft guns even back then), but I guess they wanted the "main character gun" to be something special.

Inherited one from my dad about 7 years ago. Put thousands of rounds through it and has yet gotten any stoppage. Truly the best pistol ever made (although a bit large)
I have one of these in my safe, and the thing is an absolute horse. I mean ENORMOUS. Big enough to rival a Desert Eagle in size. Definitely not meant for a small handed shooter and no way could you ever conceal one on the street unless you're wearing a parka. They're also very expensive. Mine came with a price tag of $2,200.00. However, it's not unlike a Model 29: very impractical to lug around, but an absolute blast to shoot (no pun intended). Very accurate, very durable, and has accepted any and every kind of .45 ACP I've chosen to feed it without a single malfunction. I certainly get a lot of questions when I bring it to the range, and the funny look I got from the guy behind the counter at the gun store when I asked if he could get me one was pretty memorable. If you live in the United States, and you fish with a fine net when it comes to firearms, you should give the Mk 23 some consideration. They're a hoot.

I was able to tour the "grey room" when I went to HK for MP5 armorer training over 20 years ago. Very impressive. The MK 23 was/is very overengineered, and was essentially obsolete by the time it was issued. It is also as big as a desert eagle, and the holster issued with it is a POS. To make matters worse, it was developed prior to "rail standardization", so you were pretty much limited to HK proprietary lights and lasers due to its weird accessory mounting arrangement (via the hole in the trigger guard). The Mk23 as you said was designed primarily by input of the SEALs. This is what you get when you let those guys make a wish list for everything they want in such a gizmo. The most positive aspect of the MK23 is that it became the "start point" of the USP series, which of course is a pistol that is actually useable as a traditional handgun. That said, the MK23 is very accurate, and I was issued one as late as 2006, although I never actually "used" it for mission purposes (we all opted to carry our 9mm pistols instead) - I did enjoy shooting it from time to time at the range at the firebase.
The locked-slide-when-firing is an amazingly useful feature. No idea why they decided to get rid of it, it didn't hinder the rest of the weapon in any way. Could've left it there and still made all the other changes.
Concern under stress the operator would forget to in-lock the slide, hence slowing follow-up shot. Also, created a stress point/weak point in the frame
@@chadrogers507 Added complexity, too. More machining steps, more parts, polymer frame needs to be more intricate and by extension so are the molds for it.

Interesting that the art directors for MGS1 used elements from the Phase 1 and Phase 3 versions of the gun. They used the Phase 1 laser with the final production suppressor, even the photo of the gun they used in the final results screen of the game has the original laser module. Also interesting that the original prototype of the MK 23 had the locking slide mechanism that would end up on the tranq guns in the later games of the series

Kacper Dziedzic I do not actually know the answer to that. I know they did improve on the M16A3 and M4 designs to create the C7 and C8 rifles. However the Canadian Armed Forces have used the Browning Hi-Power as their service pistol pretty much since World War 2 and is only just now considering replacing them. Para-Ordinance makes pretty good M1911’s with double stack magazines but after reading their wiki page, they are sadly no longer Canadian owned or manufactured.

Metal Gear Solid (PS1) based their MK23 SOCOM pistol on the Airsoft version from Tokyo Marui. Tokyo Marui used the Phase II model MK23 as the base, then they attached the box type LAM from the Phase I model, then the KAC suppressor from the Phase III model. So the MGS MK23 is basically a hybrid.

To get right down to it, I can say the same thing about my Astra A100, I ordered it new out of Shotgun News back when I had my FFL, and over the next 12 years, I fired thousands of rounds through her with zero malfunctions, in fact I carried her for a duty weapon, and qualified with her every 3 months, I practiced with her at least weekly using my own hand loaded ammo, and carried commercial ammo for duty and qualification. Of course being an old Vietnam Vet, I carried her with 230 grain fmj and used that same bullet in my hand loads. I was confused by that too, but the second time it was only the aiming module - my guess is there's something in the reflections that they didn't want to show for some reason, maybe employees they didn't get clearance for or HK had safety concerns about, or possibly even confidential designs.

That had to have been reverse psychology. MK23 looks huge but is actually quite ergonomic unless you have small hands, and it does not know the meaning of "jam." Desert Eagle is a humongous chunk with too much recoil, and it doesn't know how to NOT jam with alarming regularity.
Would have been a good time to explain why some military guns are given "M" designation and others "Mk." It just comes down to which service branch developed it or did the acquisition. Mk is Navy system, M is Army. But things end up being used by eachother, like Mk19, M11, Mk18, M4. Similarly, electronics that get used by both are where you get "AN" as in AN/PVS, Army/Navy Portable Visual Search. Or AN/PRC, Army/Navy Portable Radio Communication. Or for aircraft, "A" for Attack, "F" for Fighter, "V" for VTOL, "H" for helicopter. Thus, F-22, A-12 or F/A-18, V-22, H-60.
@@spiritdanimal9302 fighter is air to air like the F22 is an air superiority fighter. Attack is air to ground like the A10 which does air support. F/A means it's a jack between the two.

I still have the old handgun and except for a bit of polish on her blued surface from being carried in my nylon holster, she looks as good as the day I purchased her.

That had to have been reverse psychology. MK23 looks huge but is actually quite ergonomic unless you have small hands, and it does not know the meaning of "jam." Desert Eagle is a humongous chunk with too much recoil, and it doesn't know how to NOT jam with alarming regularity.
I wonder how many dudes didn't realize there was an invisible IR laser dot on their forehead before the lights went out...
It's not the kind of gun that's used to shoot people in the _front_ of the head, I shouldn't imagine.
it's more like a red dot than a IR
@@ZGryphon Yes, if the target is a non-IR vision-equipped guard you want to go down quietly.
Thanks for the laugh :)))
@@ZGryphon I'm sure they've hit quite a few angles!
Would have been a good time to explain why some military guns are given "M" designation and others "Mk."
It just comes down to which service branch developed it or did the acquisition.
What would be the difference between an Attack aircraft and a Fighter aircraft tho? Is a Fighter only defensive?
@@spiritdanimal9302 fighter is air to air like the F22 is an air superiority fighter. Attack is air to ground like the A10 which does air support. F/A means it's a jack between the two.
@@spiritdanimal9302 to be confusing the a12 is a CIA aircraft where the a stands for archangel and is not an attack aircraft.
Courier Six
Makes sense. Thank you.
Let's not forget the M14 turned Mk14
I love how nearly all these forgotten firearms are like a total catalogue of unique weapons used in film/tv for over 60 years lol… awesome!
