  • How Gaston's Horrific Past Led Him To A Fragile Mental State And Toxic Ego...| Beauty & The Beast
Gaston has always seemed like a rather 2-dimensional villain with his only reason for being so evil being the fact that he got rejected. But after checking out interviews with the actor who portrayed Gaston in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast and reading more into the creation of the character, it’s clear to see why Gaston’s mental state seemed so fragile. And it turns out that it likely has something to do with the villain’s history as a war hero and the mental scars that came with going to war.

Dealing with mental illness myself I have PTSD bipolar high functioning depression that's still no excuse to treat Belle and her father the way he did he was stalking Belle and would do anything to get her hand in marriage when she wasn't interested in him in the slightest Gaston needs to learn No means no you don't always get what you want just because he is dealing with some mental illness is no excuse to treat people awfully period .

In the standards of the time this was set in, you couldn’t be more wrong, women were seen and not heard, Gaston is a rich and adored hero in the village with high status, Belle’s father realistically would’ve forced her to marry Gaston so his status and wealth would increase since that’s what it was all about in the early 1800s

If the stuff about Gaston being a war hero is true in the original film's continuity, perhaps the Prince only befriended Gaston because of his status as a hero. And if it turns out Gaston was older than the Prince by a year or so, then that'd also play into my understanding of how the Prince was cursed into the Beast at age 16.

They did try helping. Part of the hero worship was their efforts to help him through any war trauma he might have. And for the most part it seemed to be working, even if it also gave him a giant ego.

I just think that Gaston is a creepy stalker, I'm all for an in-depth, sympathetic villain, but Gaston to me is just a creep who refused to grow up and move on from the girl who wouldn't have him, however, I will agree that the villagers didn't exactly help Gaston's ego and instead encouraged it, I've noticed that when Gaston was rejected by Belle, he said "I'm disgraced" when he was in the pub, so I'm wondering if he'd seen sense of the villagers hadn't been a bunch of yesmen about him.

So perhaps Gaston was longing for a deeper, more authentic love; which interestingly proves him not to be so shallow after all. While the towns folk love him, their love is impersonal. Those ladies who swoon over him are only attracted to his facade, but they can't care for him as a friend, or nurse him back to health. Maybe he's too scared to let anyone in and show the unattractive dark parts within him. His attraction to Belle could be because she is an authentic person who would be the ideal partner for him out of anyone in town- which would mean his attraction to her was deeper than it seemed all along.
This video really opened my mind to an interesting insight.

Up until World War II, I think sadly PTSD and things like shell shock were not understood at all, take it from General George Patton (1885-1945) was known to slap across the back of the head of American GI soldiers who had psychological trauma whom he thought was either one or several of their PTSD or Shell-Shock throughout the Sicily Campaign in the summer of 1943 dismissed as just plain cowardice.

We never really know how or why Gaston's military career came to an end, but given how he acts when Belle calls him a monster, I feel like he was a ruthless commander who lusted after battlefield glory and promotions and while he won victories his company always took very high casualties as a result one day he went too far (like ordering the execution of civilians who had surrendered) and his men mutinied with only LaFou staying loyal and their testimonies were enough to get him dismissed from the army

It's an interesting back story , but a person doesn't simply become a villian just because they dont get enough attention. after all Gaston got love from so many people and there was literaly WOMEN SWOONING ALL OVER HIM!
the line in the movie, " BECAUSE SHE'S THE BEST, AND DON'T I DESERVE THE BEST?" should speak volumes. Gaston is also shown to love himself and be extremely narcisistic which is where the real villiany coems from. People who are self obsessed are going to be upset when they don't get what they want and won't settle for something they view as less. Gaston had scores of lovely ladies thatcould of mothered the children he wanted, after all he wanted boys not girls. Or atkleast he wanted 5 or 7 boys. nothing wrong with that though it's just that he was already making plans with Belle with no concern for what she wanted. That's where the real problem stems from he wasn't THINKING OF WHAT BELLES WANTS! He didn't realy care about Belle or how she felt, he just wanted a TROPHEY WIFE! because she's the best!
Origanaly when Disney was firt making this story Belle was going to have an evil step mother because in the origanal story Beuty had evil step sisters rather than some guy who felt entitled to her. Gaston was origanaly proposed as somee Narcisist who's in love himself who was supposed to be betroved to Bell her wicked Step Mother who wanted her out of way and reap riches in the process. But they scrapped her out of the movie and Gaston became the new villian.
I think the ideal of Gaston being a war hero more so shows what he was giving up rather than what made him into the villian he became. He became a villian because he was a verry self entitled, which can happen to anyone of any background. Be the person from humble beganings or a privlidged life style. If they think they deserve something and don't care about how it affects others and can't handle the fact they don't always get what they want, then they are going to try and get it if they feel that they can in any way. And they won't care how they get it if they are a selfish person. Gaston is simply selfish.

cept in the live-action version of the movie, Gaston really didnt seem to hold much weight and seemed to be merely tolerated by the village. In the original version of the movie, the village rallied behind Gaston without hesitation to make him feel better and celebrate his "achievements" in the song Gaston.
However, in the live-action movie, they only pitched in after Lafou paid them to do so, not because they actually cared about him. There seems to be no genuine affection at all for Gaston in the live-action movie by anyone but Lafou and the triplets.

He keeps being an arrogant guy who refused to accept that he couldn't have everything he wanted, and society around him failed to bring him back to reality. Not all villains need to hide behind an illness to be bad.

I don't understand how or why you if you really are being truthful about talking with the writers of the live action film about Gaston why you wouldn't go straight to the source Linda Wolverton who created this role and opened it up more for the Broadway show and then was frozen out of being part of the live action film. Gaston being a war hero is not cannon and wasn't created by the Author of this story, so this is not real its fake and doesn't count. Linda Wolverton as stated that Gaston was written based on a few X boyfriends in her life and they really acted like thaws towards her and her girlfriends. So stop making videos off of other peoples adaptations that don't come from the original author who is still alive and should have been the one for the film and still getting paid that Disney is using her works and world that she created for them.
