Gaston Wasn’t a Bad Guy: A Mini Video Essay

  • What if the bad guy wasn't the bad guy? This is a mini video essay about how Gaston wasn’t a bad guy. Kind of, specifically how the mob was right and morally justified in Beauty of the Beast. (And a shoutout to John Doyle and NeoGastonism for making this topic and video popular) The morality of mobs is hard to pin down, but after taking a closer look with me, I think you might agree with that conclusion if you consider the villagers point of view and circumstances. The snowflake doesn’t blame itself for the avalanche, and mobs are destructive, so how responsible are the members of the mob for all that went down? I tackle some tough question, and hopefully give you some good food for thought.

Gaston is wrong always has been and always will be. He believes reading is wrong before anyone say Marx remember the opening song she was reading a romance novel. Not nonfiction so that is out. Two he only like her for her looks that which will fade and not her personhood which includes reading books. He belittles her for being herself yet your are mad for her not choosing him when he belittles her not even trying to read the same books as her and thus having something in common. I mean her hunting might be close to impossible but him learnig to read not so much..any human can read. Everyone knows that having common interests and idealologie can help a marriage longer then looks or physical attraction because it is of the heart not the eyes what if he had gone blind would he have cared about her looks? No. But that dad who is a inventory and those books she reads sure comes in handy now. He will get old and not be young forever. His strength will fade as well. But you know what wouldn't his wisdom. Those books would have even helped him hunt between anx branch of into other markets since if you hunt too much you actually will run out of gain the same with fishing. Where if you over hunt or fish a actually run out of gain. So him not seeing the potential in Bella and her books but only in her looks means they were going to suffer when older. Who ever said Gusto was the one look only to the present not the future.

    • @Digganob590
      @Digganob590 2 роки тому +28

Technically not a murderer. Whether or not it's wrong to let someone die depends on your own likely hood of following them in death, knowledge of their coming death, and whether or not they're likely to hurt someone after you save them. Though, saving someone's life regardless of any of that is doubtlessly noble.
I would say that in this case, Belle wouldn't have known if Gaston would have continued to attack the Beast, and she was focusing on the Beast so she perhaps barely knew what was happening to Gaston anyways.
Also, of course, he seemed to be out of reach.
Murderer? No. Manslaughter because of she could have saved him but didn't? *Very* arguable.

So true. But Disney loves to force the audiences perspective and view the antagonist as villainous and never redeemable. Tho in recent years, Disney has tried a new approach.. kinda. With a new film centered around a classic Disney antagonist.. but I find it strange that of all the Disney antagonists they chose to give the viewer a change of perspective, Disney chose Cruella, a wicked woman who wants to skin dogs for fashion. That's pretty much it. There are so many other antagonists that they could've chosen, yet they chose her?? But I guess you could easily assume that Disney wanted to profit off the hype around Harley Quinn with her new movies and created their own version of her.

one should not forget that the movie spoonfeeds "gaston=evil" and it has to do this because had they made him and the villagers act more true to life and less like stereotypical movie bullies/ baddies the audience, which are impressionable children might have actually sided with Gaston and the villagers, because Gaston and the villagers act by common sense,
keep the outcome of each Gaston scene but substitute the interaction for each of them to one with a good guy vibe and you as the audience are left rooting for Gaston, who protects his community, who shows he is monogamous despite being desired by every woman besides Bell
meanwhile Bell does not actually do anything of vallue to the community, she reads storybooks all day which in the 18th and 19th centuries was seen as no better or even worse than watching tv all the time is today.
the beast had been a man but indeed the villagers could not have known that and regardless had only projected beastly behaviour to the outside world, in fact he imprisons Belle in his castle to force her to fall in love with him, Gaston was agressive in his pursuit of her but he never thought of resorting to such despicable methods,
In the end it seems that disney wanted to go against societal conventions and the only way that could work was to present those conventions and those living by them/enforcing them as terrible people, whilst showing the alternative as something romantic, again she was locked in a dungeon to save her father and the beast did so only to get her to fall in love with him and break the curse, the equivalent to some guy in his thirties adopting a 16 year old girl and grooming her to fall in love with him

    • @solank7620

      Excellent post!
I think back then, the Gaston of a village would be more like a dumb lunk headed guy but who wanted to protect his village and was respectful to his elders.
But then a conflict could still happen because of information asymmetry.
However most movies aren’t really into more nuanced takes, they want clear good guys and bad guys. So a situation where everyone is well meaning, and acting rationally based upon totally different sets of information, which puts them in conflict, isn’t really what Hollywood would do.

      @troyii435 9 місяців тому

The thing is he is willing to do horrible things through the espousal of them being virtuous or "deserved". He for one is consistently being egregiously rude to the point of harassing and assaulting others, constantly demeans and looks down on everyone around him, disregards his genuine faults by reminding himself of the superficially good traits he has, he is attempting to force a woman to marry him without her consent because he believes he deserves her, plans to kidnap her and her father as well as threaten them to do these things, and is actively planning to kill someone belle loves BECAUSE he sees that she loves him and not Gaston himself. Besides those acts, the more poignant focus of the story is on the heart of the person, and Gaston is proven constantly to have horrible character and to be a morally twisted person who doesn't value others, which is the essential main problem beyond even any actions he's taken. I don't think calling him evil is productive or fair to how the story was portraying him, but he's certainly monstrous and a pretty bad person. The beast's biggest blunders are imprisoning belle's dad, whom he believed was trespassing as well as perceived to be demeaning him, keeping belle imprisoned, and at the most being aggressive, forceful, and angry. But the beast's motivations were constantly shown to be much more moral and considerate. He imprisons belle's dad because, again, he was intruding and the beast believed him to be demeaning or insulting him, in which the beast imprisoned him, which was beyond harsh and cruel, but clearly motivated by a sense of threat as well as a decision made on an angry whim without intention or forethought. Then when the beast imprisons belle it goes without saying why that's at least understandable. Another thing to point out though is that he takes it to heart that belle will sacrifice herself for her father as well as is deeply remorseful for her losing touch with her father. These both display that the beast not only cares for both of them meaningfully but also regrets slightly his actions, which are, again much much more reasonable and motivated from a place of good than Gaston. And then for how he treats belle, he gets angry often and acts aggressively but doesn't follow through on threats at all and actively submits himself and accomodates her wishes, while also reflecting and feeling remorseful for his behavior. He doesn't actively invade her space, he listens to the advice of others and he makes compromises to some degree. I mean I understand and can agree with the sentiment being expressed that people can easily distort the view of someone who's the complete opposite of what they're being espoused to be, but that's also essentially what the story is about. Gaston is shown to actually have a terrible personality and on the level that is meaningful and focused on in this story, be a horrible person, while the beast who is expected to be a monster, actually is proven to be an amazing person by the end despite his dire circumstances.

I think Bob Lennon articulated those arguments very elegantly. The village may not be too fond of books and knowledge but also they don't have the luxury to appreciate it due to the constant struggle of living in a modest community. Gaston is the best hunter of the village and most likely fed the village more than any royalty in this story did.
It's only natural they won't make a sequel on the events following the end of the movie. Gaston freaking died and so did the village's capacity to sustain the next winter properly. Kinda messed up if you think about it.

Jealousy was still a big part of Gaston's motivations. The girl who would rebuff him at every turn speaking of anyone with warmth and affection, that it was a freakish monster probably wounded his pride as well.
Been a while since I last saw the movie, but it does seem odd Gaston was singularly focused on Belle only to not look into where she went after she disappeared.

I feel like with was more of a defence for the villagers' actions than Gaston's.
Like, Gaston isn't the sharpest tool in the box, but he's also incredibly manipulative and knows how to work a crowd.
He's the town hero after all, and he liked that status. I think the idea is that he saw the Beast as competition than a threat, but used the town's paranoia and superstition to rally them up.
Also, he doesn't exactly respect Belle or her father, and I feel like he'd only rescue Belle if Belle herself would be his "reward" afterward.
I get a lot of people love Gaston, and how could you not. He's a hilarious and charismatic villain, but he's still a villain.
So yeah.....sorry, I'm not buying this argument, but I'm ready to be persuaded otherwise.
    Nice video though.

    • @OntheOtherHandVideos
      @OntheOtherHandVideos  2 роки тому +12

Ya, I was mostly thinking about and talk about the mob itself in the video for this reason. I think the writers went out of their way to paint Gaston as a mustache twirling bad guy because if they didn't, he could have been another protagonist and there would be no villain. And thought this could have been a better film, it was also an unnecessary risk, because the traditional story structure hit it out of the park, especially at that time. But yes, how he is presented, he definitely isn't a great guy.

    • @tsnophaljakarax9963
      @tsnophaljakarax9963 2 роки тому +9

@@OntheOtherHandVideos I can see your point, but honestly I think sometimes a straight-up bad guy isn't really all that bad for a story. I mean hell, humans can be complex but can just also be straight-up jerks.
And in a way, that's how I see Gaston. I don't see him as a moustache-twirling evildoer. I think he does actually see himself as the hero, as does the rest of the town. I mean even Belle is reasonably friendly with him. She just has her limits when he starts being a dick XD
I think his "evil" acts begin to spiral out of control when he doesn't get his own way. And that makes sense. Everyone in the town worships him, so to have not just some girl turn him down, but the one he's had his heart set on, that's gonna come as a massive shock to his ego. So then he basically starts using everything in his power to get what he wants, thus making him more villainous.
So basically my point is that Gaston doesn't really start out evil. He's just an egotistical jerk that makes worse and worse decisions that doesn't really benefit anyone but himself, thus becoming the movie's villain. It might have been neat to see a more 'morally-complex' Gaston, but I think him being a jerk kinda serves the message of the movie better.
He may be everyone's favourite Alpha-male.....but he's still a massive asshole and there's no changing that.
ADDENDUM: Be that as it may though, I think Disney themselves realised how much of a chad Gaston was, and somewhat redeemed him in a live-action Beauty and the Beast spinoff show on the Disney Channel. I can't remember of the name of the show, but I know that both Belle and Gaston were the hosts. I did remember as a kid thinking it was pretty jarring to see Gaston as a good guy in the show and actually being nice to Belle. So maybe Gaston just holds some kind of power I will never fully understand XD

Beauty and the Beast takes place in the early 1700s, way before the actual French Revolution. It'd be like conflating WW2 with the modern day.
That and the French Revolution primarily was a Parisian/urban affair. It was less villagers forming a mob, and more urban townsfolk forming said mob.
As for the video itself, it is obvious that Gaston himself had ulterior motives. The villagers definitely had good intentions, but Gaston clearly was trying to manipulate the situation in order to get it on with Belle.

Something tells me the reason why they made beauty and the beast as a feminist leaning story is because many criticized the little mermaid's movie which is the Disney princess film before the beauty and the beast came out. They wanted Belle to be a more idealistic feminist woman that little kids should look up to instead of Ariel. Ariel was only seen as a spoiled brat who wanted to have man as seen by many critics including feminists and SJW's. It seems that the wokes did not like Ariel's portrayal of the bitter reality and her personality as a rebellious teen girl making mistakes rooted from parent-child issues because of the 'girls are supposed to be smart all time and looking for a man to be happy is dumb' ideology. They made an even more based storyline in the beauty and the beast, giving unrealistic messages and misinterpretation of what being a man should be, AKA being a simp. Seeing Belle portrayed as the 'imperfectly-perfect' special misunderstood character is just honestly not applicable in real life.

Gaston's only flaw is that he fell in love with a feminist woman.
Other than that, he is just a normal man. He was confident in himself based on his abilities, skills, and available information.
And he exhibited great courage and selflessness in his attempt to save the woman from the clutches of the vicious beast.
If Gaston was in Lord of the Rings then we would now be singing his praises in exactly the same manner that we praise every other good character in that story who gave his life to selflessly protect the weak and innocent.
It's clear as day that Disney is doing feminist propaganda.
And when it come to the beast, the beast never was human to begin with. The curse merely substitutes the metaphorical monster of the prince's Pride into the literal monster of a vicious carnivore.
And how does the curse get broken? It's NOT when the beast learns to love and care about people regardless of how they look because the beast literally doesn't do that. No. The curse is broken when a young, beautiful lass (Belle) falls in love with him. The prince does NOT change. Rather he gets what he wanted from the start because he still thinks he is too good for mediocre people.
And thus we can infer from this that the real purpose of the curse was to cement the prince as the villainous beast who ends up killing the hero, Gaston, and then the prince manipulates everyone into revering him solely for his inherited position which he did not earn, unlike Gaston who built himself as a strong man through proactive, and moral action.
Additionally, the people who keep defending Disney's propaganda are sad and pathetic to be rooting for the evil prince and his simp feminist whore.
The prince literally does NOT change as a character. He is still Prideful because fate keeps giving him the hot babes on a silver platter despite his looks because those babes are just as morally deficient as he is. The moral of the story is that it takes a feminist woman to love a Prideful man.
Gaston, on the other hand, earns his position as the village hunter because he actually puts the effort to become strong. Unlike the prince who inherited his status and power, Gaston earns it through proactive action. Gaston's view of Belle as an unmarried woman is the correct one and always has been the correct one since the dawn of civilization. Belle cannot stay single forever and she must stop reading stuff she barely understands and devote herself to her biological and societal role as a mother. It is men who write poetry and create civilization. Without men, Belle wouldn't have a safe environment where she can pretend that her feminism is healthy for her and the people around her. Without men, Belle wouldn't be a strong, independent woman to begin with. Men protect her. Her feminism is worthless.

The Mob Song is terribly underrated. Both of Gaston's songs are great, tbh.
As to the justification of the mob, they have honestly done all of the due diligence required. They have the testimony of Maurice, who they reasonably believed to be hallucinating as he was a known nut. Belle has now shown them the beast, and Maurice, her father says it's a monster. The conflicting testimony of the father and daughter can't be rectified without talking to the beast, and (1) that's pretty unreasonable to expect the town to do (2) What is the beast going to say if he has indeed cast a spell on her? He will deny it, and they reasonably expect this, so they make the decision to kill the beast.

Gaston was clearly the hero of this story and the beast was the villain. It's just the hero dies tragically and the villain is "redeemed." Though he got a woman to love him, he most likely hurt many others to get his curse that we never see him make amends with.
Also I want to point out that Jasmine from Aladdin is an awful, spoiled brat of a person. She lives in luxury while her people starve on the street and all she had to do in return is marry into royalty, creating a bond with another country, thus helping her people, but instead she, like a spoiled brat had to have it all and married a homeless guy which will do no help for her people. She literally was a prize to be won, that was the price she had to pay for living a life of comfort.

    • @OntheOtherHandVideos

I would argue that Jasmine's personality flaws in the original movie are as much to do with the flat world building as with her actual writing. If she was truly royalty in that time period, she would have had responsibilities like preparing to be the wife of a neighboring kingdom, and she would have been tutored in managerial aspects of being the wife of a ruler, or how to be diplomatic etc. She might have still felt trapped, but she would have come off much more sincere and relatable, as we all feel trapped at times by our responsibilities.

But Gaston was shown to be very disrespectful, and went to villainous lengths to get what he wanted. I'm not someone who identifies as a feminist, but I wouldn't want to live in a world where a woman can coerce and pressure me like Gaston did to Belle. If she says no, it means no.
However, I agree with about forming a mob to kill the beast. The beast DID lock Belle up, physically threatened her, and attempted to command her around. If someone can be redeemed, it is THEIR responsibility to be redeemed. Other people are simply just an audience. They're only responsible for taking note of said character's behavior and that's it. I stand by my argument that Gaston was a bad guy. But the beast was a worse guy. When Belle pulled out the mirror, Gaston looked genuinely concerned. The only problem with simps is that they do things for a girl and get no recognition for it and they are too stupid to see that. If you've seen the movie or read the book 'A Walk To Remember' I think you'd get the whole 'changing yourself for someone you love' thing. Plus I think it was more of Bell showing Beast how awful he really was that made him want to change.

If a man trapped you in his house, threatened you not to leave, also threatened you to not go in a specific area, was foul mannered, then later on showed a sweeter side, and finally let you go JUST BECAUSE a relative was hurt, would you actually consider that romantic?
I wouldn't. If it were me, I'd actually be afraid every second of the day. Yes, my captor may grow nicer, but the fact is I'm not free to leave on my accord. What's stopping them from hurting me if I'm not able to run? Can I reasonably rely on their feelings? I say no, considering that realistically people tend to use the concept of love to excuse possessiveness.
Bender from Futurama said it best with "Love is suspicious. Love is needy. Love is fearful. Love is greedy." Yeah, that's not always the case, but if someone truly loved someone else, and was therefore worthy of love back, giving them the ability to walk away is, at least in my opinion, the most minimal minimum of action they can do. If you don't have the freedom to live your life, you don't have the ability to protect it.

@@azazelgrigori9244 you are right to assume I'm a girl. But i think you're confusing love with lust. Lust is needy, lust is greedy and so on. Also if you look at where the Beast is coming from, he needs love. Letting Bell go wad not only losing the love of his life but also his only chance to be normal again. Also Bell volunteered to stay in place of her father. Not saying that what he did was right but surely he's not worse than Gaston for it.
Another point is that Gaston only lusted after Bell. The only reason he wants her is because she beautiful, and when she says no he wants her even more. In a way Gaston changed for Bell as much as the Beast did, only he got worse. Love made the Beast better, while lust made Gaston a monster.

The dude was wayyy too invested in Belle. He and Belle had absolutely nothing in common, yet why did he choose to pursue her so much? Why didn't he pursue any of the other women who were arguably just as attractive as Belle? And if he actually did save Belle and kill the beast, does he really think Belle would have changed? Of course not. She would have pursued other godless endeavors and made him miserable for the rest of his days. It would be like any based alpha Chad today pursuing a green haired leftist feminist. Pursuing her was his downfall. She's the femme fatal.

Agreed, Gaston was simping but people are guilty of falling in love all of the time, for better or worse. Also with modern medical advances, people with bad genes can reproduce and we've almost basically nullified nature selection and it produces ugliness or stupidity. Another thing is, women didn't die their hair, put piercings in their face and get fat back then unless were rich. Which made it much harder for the people of past to spot them out.

No. Even in that context, forming a mob to attack the Beast at his castle still wasn't morally justified. There was no evidence that the Beast had harmed anyone, and the only person who had spent any length of time with him was able to vouch for his character. If the Beast had previously attacked and injured someone else, then it would have been a tough call. The mob went along with Gaston, knowing full well that he didn't know any more about the Beast than they did. It was disgusting, unjustified hysteria.

    • @OntheOtherHandVideos

Hysteria? Definitely. But I'd argue that it was justified (as I did in the movie). He seemingly wrongfully imprisoned an old man almost causing his death, and then imprisoned his daughter, and seemingly cast a spell on her. For the education and superstition level at that time, I think it would be very possible a jury of their peers would find them justified in their actions.

Did you watch the fucking movie?! He clearly wasn't right, Gaston only loved belle for her looks, disrespected her interests in reading, threaten to throw her father in a mental asylum if she didn't marry him, manipulated the villagers to help him kill the beast so he can have belle for himself, and moments before Gaston dying, he cowardly begged for mercy, and when the beast could have dropped him, he spared and told him to get out of the Castle, but he tried to kill him again anyway. The beast however, was a real spoiled asshole at first, he even told Belle to promise him to stay in the Castle forever after she offered to take her father's place as his prisoner, and she later resented him for not letting her father out in the first place, even disobeyed him especially when she got to the west wing, refused to join him for dinner and even decided to leave the castle after the beast frightened her in the west wing, it was only after he saved her from becoming the wolf pack's dinner when she started to warm up to him and teach him humility, thus changing to the beast to a point where he set belle free so she could do the same thing she did that got her in that situation in the first place: to help her father, and like I said the beast showed Gaston mercy where Gaston did not. what would you say about Edward Cullen from twilight, you're gonna defend him too?

To quote somebody else' comment, "Gaston is selfish, egotistical, and devoid of empathy, however, from his perspective, his actions are justified" - I think Gaston is plausibly justifiable to a jury of his peers - I do think because we are given an omniscient view of his over the top mustache twirling from our modern perspective we would disagree, but I think the argument holds.

The fact Belle calls Gaston a monster upon his discovery that she had been imprisoned by the Beast tells me that Gaston must have either:
    A. Determined that Belle was put under some spell by the Beast.
    B. Assumed Belle was issuing a challenge to him to defeat the Beast in exchange for her love.
She has no reason to call him a monster in that scene. Gaston has been nothing but nice to her, sure maybe in order to wed her, but he has done nothing warranting the "monster" label. He is quite literally the envy of the entire town and for good reason.

This scene reminds me of modern politics: A charismatic or trusted person manipulates legitimate fear to create an artificial need that they must be given power to meet. Gaston sees an opportunity to eliminate his sexual competition, while advancing his position as the local hero. He himself may or may not have legitimate concerns about the beast, but we see him gleefully and intentionally stir the fears of his community, culminating in the line, “It’s time to take some action boys, it’s time to follow me!”
Even the line “We’re counting on Gaston to lead the way,” shows how the villagers are mostly good intentioned people who have put their trust in someone with ulterior motives.

And he lies and manipulates till it all backfires and the Hyenas stop buying it. Politics to a T.
