- Chip is one of the more interesting characters in the film, along with being one of the more kindhearted ones. And of course, we all know Chip as the son of Mrs. Potts, who also happened to be turned into a piece of tableware. But did you know that there is a theory floating around on the internet that is centered around the concept that Chip is actually not Mrs. Potts's child at all, and instead is the illegitimate son of the enchantress?

If she could curse an entire castle. Couldn't she she just take her kid? Hell, she could have cursed everyone BUT chip and then taken him. There's a lot of plot holes with this theory.

Not really. Jafar was a mediocre sorcerer before he gained genie powers, but in Beauty and the Beast, the Enchantress was "powerful," hence she could have not placed the curse to Chip. Besides, as a mother, she could have just taken Chip first before she placed the curse on the castle and everyone in it. So yeah, this theory has a lot of plot holes.
That's what I'm saying! Plus tgere's the fact that Lumiere says that they had been cursed for 10 years & if the beast was 21 wouldn't he had been only 11 years old at the time thus only being 4 years older than chip enchanted time zone be damned

There are a lot of plot holes with this theory. First, why would The Enchantress curse her own son? Second, Chip calls Mrs. Potts "Mama".
She could be a mother figure tho. My cousin called his aunt mom too bc she raised him
Maybe she didn't know chip was in the castle. She could have told him to wait outside and he got curious and snuck inside

.... I hate to tell you this.. but the beast was like a kid when he was transformed into the beast. Like 10 years-11 years old kind of young. The curse lasted 10 years, and when he came out of it, he was roughly around 21 years of age. At the beginning the call him a young prince but as the movie progress, it's said the rose would bloom until his 21st birthday, and when you see the rose in the movie you see a lot of petals have fallen off, and that the curse has been in place for 10 years. This is further suggested by the movie Beauty and the beast: the enchanted christmas.... It makes sense the servants wouldn't age while the beast does, because the servants, where turned into "inanimate" objects. While the beast was turned into basically a living thing that could still age. Which would explain why chip looks younger then 10 years old.

@@audreycollins2676 and there is also to consider that, even if it sounds cruel. The enchantress was disguised not just as an old ugly woman, but as a poor person/beggar. In that time there were high chances of a person like that to carry contagious diseases , or that they were actually a bait trying to get inside to let robbers in later. ( In fact, sadly, that is still a possibility)

Or she really just adopted him. As also at that time illnesses were harder to recover from. So maybe his parents were servants or other family members who got sick and died when he was too young to remember them so she took on the role of mother and why he sees her as mother. Also explains all the other kid teacups. And we know the servants probably got together as lumiere (candle stick) and duster are flirting and all with each other. And miss pots is shown to be the head of the servants so she could have cared for all the kids while their parents were doing hard work and again adopted chip if he's parents died or left
Not possible adam is about 21 at the start of the movie then its mentioned it's been 10 years 10 take 21 means adam would have been 11, the live action movies doesn't count in this as they took the line out about it being 10 years so for all we know it could have just been a year or two for them also not sure if I'm remembering correctly but wasnt it said that enchanted Christmas isnt cannon so through all of these there is no way that chip could be Adam's son.

It's debatable about the live action but I think your right about the one or two years cause one of the servants in the castle is actually married to a villager and they're both still alive and around the same age
There's talk about belles lines in the opening song about everyday being the same (almost eerily so) so the town is cursed to forget the royals existed and repeats the same Day-ish

ok but my question is what happened to Chip's so called "brothers and sisters" ? we never got to see them anymore after that 1 scene where Mrs.Potts is putting Chip to bed.
That's why I think miss pots just took care of all the servants kids. It would make sense as she's seen to have more status over the rest of the servants. Aka the beast is the boss of everyone but she's the associate manager under him. and we see lumiere and duster girl flirting and everything so it's known that servants are mingling romantically together. And if they lived in the castle it would make sense for the kids to do small work. So while their parents did their heavy work she would care for them making them see her as their grandmother. And then since illnesses were harder to recover from as well as childbirth. So maybe his mom died from illness or giving birth and either dad also died or left as it would make sense that his mom went to work to the castle to support chip. But again they/she died or left when he was too young to remember them and so miss pots took him as her own and why he sees her as his mother.

So i pointed out he was 11 not 14, but as far as puberty goes for boys its usually anywhere from the age 11-14. Everyone is different so I'm still saying big nope that Beast was Chips Dad.
@@jennix8666 if Beast was 11 (instead fact that he looks way older in fairytale and life action) and the movie starts when he is 21, so Chip should be 10. He could be 10 but for me he looks younger. The biggest question is not the possibility of being Chip's father but the fact did coursed castle aged or not.
I'm not sure why you think a powerful, rich man having a bastard would be a scandal but a servant girl (or really any woman) having one wouldn't? Generally men have faced much less censure than women for children born out of wedlock.
If you're going to talk about looks, you should probably include something about dominant/recessive traits, alleles, melanin, etc. If it were true, you could argue that, yes, melanin which controls the pigment in your skin, hair, eyes, etc. changes as we age, chips hair could be blond at age 7, but by the time he's 21, he could have darker hair which is an easier explanation than hey coloured his hair. I don't know much about the history of hair dye, but going dark to light usually requires killing the hair, and I don't know if it would have been available in the 1800's when the movie is set to take place. But this just determines looks and ignores the whole, age thing where Beast was actually 11, when he was cursed, blah blah blah...
I agree, my own hair was blonder when I was a kid, so i know first hand.
I was born with black hair, had really blonde hair at 9mnths and turned dark blonde/light brown by 20. hair really does weird stuff. I also got wavy hair in adult hood from my straight as a kid.
I've heard that everyone used to really like red hair and blondes. the girls tried to achieve this color with the help of urine. they took dog urine, heated it in the sun and dipped their hair in urine for several hours. because there is ammonia in the urine, and it dislodge the pigment out of the hair, but not very much...
For me, this theory is problematic for two reasons
1. It goes against the condition to break the curse that someone must learn to trully love the Beast. If the curse was made by a "powerful" enchantress, it should have known that the condition hasn't yet been met because Belle hasn't "loved" the Beast in the entirety of his person, which includes Chip as his son.
2. If the enchantress was indeed powerful, then she could have spared Chip from the curse, or better still, if she is his mother, she could have removed Chip from the castle before making the curse. I mean geez are parents really that irresponsible in those times? How hypocrital is the Enchantress to demand love out of the curse if she can't even show love to her own child?

Of course he's Mrs. Potts kid. He may have started out a nephew or adopted for whatever reason, but once taken in, she's his new mother. Only evil step mothers are called step mother.

I agree with you on this. I feel that Mrs. Potts was like a governess and was responsible for looking after all of the Castle's children. She held a particular fondness for Chip, maybe because of his precocious nature, maybe because he really was a late child for her (my coworker had a baby when she was 50!)
That's what I thought and hoped that Lumiere and Babette had a child.
As someone who was a toehead as a child, I can guarantee that blondes can end up with dark blonde aka dish water blonde color hair.
Also a woman who becomes pregnant with a child of a royal but is not of at least lesser nobility would likely have their child removed from their custody and placed with a royal servant who was either the head maid or the male counterpart that ran things, these two positions are very important and often allowed to have authority under the Royalty, to oversee staff and make staff assignments. They also worked closely with aides to the Royals, this is why a son who would be adopted into the line of succession if the Queen didn't bear a legitimate heir, would have been in the castle in the first place. Now if this did happen, it's not hard to see an angry woman visit a witch or enchantress to exact revenge, and when the Prince turned away the disguised enchantress, she would see him for the selfish person he was.
However, I thought Disney stated Chip was an orphan taken in by Mrs. Potts.
If that last part is true, I'm mind blown. I never knew that.

Towhead is the actual term and it comes from textiles. Short linen fibers, which are light in color, are called tow. People began referring to children with light blond hair as “tow head” as a comparison to the linen tow.
The beast could be the older brother of Chip
My mom was 68 when she went through menopause 🤷🏽♀️ not everyone goes at 45. That was actually a factor that made my doctor fight my request to get my tubes tied after my third child (that I had at 39). I had to see two therapists and sign a waiver that I was not going to change my mind, for them to let me do that. Good times. I’m 44 right now, and not even premenopausal. I wish.
If she could curse the whole castle....why couldn't she just take her son back? She seems powerful enough to at least know where he was.
I can disprove this with a simple fact. The Beast was trapped in the castle as a beast for ten years, but the curse says "on your 21st birthday."
The beast would've been 11 years old when this started and couldn't have had a child that young! Not to mention that The Beast is the only one who ages properly! The rest of the castle seems to age slowly or not at all, meaning that Chip is actually 17 years old.
If Beast was really the father, he would've been 4 years of age when he became the father. Literally impossible.
ok so hear me out.. everyone is saying that adam was 21-22 at the time of the movie starting, but if he actually wasn't? we have to keep in mind here that the rose isn't just your average, every day rose, this is an enchanted rose. adam looked to be nearing his 20's when he was cursed, figure maybe 16 at best right? so when the movie starts it had been 10 years since the curse was placed, and the flower had only STARTED to wilt once he turned 21, and maybe each petal would wilt when so much time had passed since his birthday, which would mean that he's actually 26 years old by the time the curse is broken. keeping in mind, belle is only 17 and gaston, who's been going after her from the start, is 25. the only way adam would've been 11 when he was cursed is if the animators had depicted him as being 11 in the start of the original movie, BECAUSE the picture that adam rips in his room, is of his REAL FACE, at his last known age, which was clearly not 11.

they say that he would die if the curse wasn't broken by his 21'st birthday, and lumiere mentions they were objects for 10 years, meaning he was 20 to 21 during the movie and was 11 when they were cursed. in the sequel, they show a flashback of that night and adam is, in fact, 11.
I just read that Glean Keane (Beast's animator) said that he is in fact a 21 year old in the movie.

Honestly it doesn't make any sense. Beast would have been to young to have him. And maybe why chip is still a kid it might be because the enchantress didn't want to take away his childhood. Since he hadn't gone anything wrong so maybe she stopped his aging.
Enchantress is belle's mother the Twisted Tales books tells you so.

Twisted Tales, like the Villain series books ("Fairest of Them All" etc.) are fanfiction, and therefore not canon. The fact that Disney allows them to exist without claiming copyright does not make the official Disney material.
If the Enchantress put the curse on the Prince and the castle out of revenge, why wouldn’t she spare her son (if Chip is her son.). It really seems more likely that she was pissed at something the Prince did and decided to teach him a lesson.
Both Chip and Adam look similar as they are brothers and have the same father but different mothers, the Enchantress must have tried and succeeded to seduce the king to her bed which resulted in having a baby. The Enchantress' plans failed when she realised that she wasn't going to become queen once the Prince discovered she was a witch who bewitched his father resulting in her being banished from the Kingdom, but not before vowing to get her revenge on Adam for destroying her plans leaving her child behind.
Fearing for his sons lives shipped them both to the isolated castle in the mountains to keep them safe with a few trusted servants Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs Potts who was once was Adam's wet nurse to keep the secret resulting in Chip calling Mrs Potts Mama thinking that the older woman was his mother.
That night when the enchantress found the prince several years later ready to abstract her revenge, she disguised herself as an old woman looking for shelter, not recognising the old woman and wanting to protect his little brother told the woman to leave his castle, that was when she turned the prince into a beast and cursed his servants for stealing her child but realised too late that her son was amongst the cursed servants. Feeling guilty for hurting her son she used a continuum to her spell stating that if the beast in his twenty-first year finds love and loved in return the spell would be broken, making sure that the spell would be broken the Enchantress planned for Maurice to be at the right place at the right time resulting in Belle meeting The Beast not to save the prince or the people that stabbed her in the back but for the love she had for her son.
There is a problem with this... If Chip really is 7 years old, and the Beast is 21, the Beast would have been 13 when Chip was born. Old enough to be his father? Not really. Being his brother is more plausible

The book *The Beast Within: A Tale of Beauty's Prince* explains that the prince was 16 or 17 he was old enough to hunt and drink and was friends with poeple around Gaston's age the curse didnt take place right away. His transformation into the beast was slow its said he aged slowly in appearance. however he aged a matter of years within a few months so I'm not exactly how fast he aged. So instead of looking how he dose in his slashed portrait or when the curse is broken. He looked to be in his mid 20's late 30's.
He aged in appearance do to the curse memories of his past life also disappeared from both the beasts and the villagers minds.
As soon as bell walked in the thats when the time limit started. The proalouge said the rose "would bloom until his twenty first year." So im guessing the beast had just turned 21 when the movie starts.

I always thought of Mrs Potts was more like Chip’s grandmother, and his real mother died and took care and raised him. On a side note, Chip looks a lot like Urchin from the little mermaid tv series. So a theory I have now, is that Urchin is an older Chip.

Interesting theory, but after watching the Disney version it always made no sense. 1. If the Prince was cursed till he turned 21 and the rose would start to wither. Then how old was he when he was cursed 12? When Lumier mentions the number of years they had been cursed the math doesn't add up. Also 1 we can all agree Mrs. Pots is WAY to old to be a mother of a 7 year old. Also with the number of years Lumier mentions, chip was what frozen at 7 years old? Too many questions and situations that make no sense.

I think chips father was in fact beast’s father but was illegitimate child when he slept with a staff member but the staff member died in child birth so he was given to mrs Potts to raise as her own. It explains why chip and the beast looks similar in human form same blue eyes and same facial features. This was before the father disappeared after beast’s mother died and beast and staff was cursed

Chip is obviously adopted by Mrs. Potts and she is raising him and his brothers and sisters Prince and Chip could be half-brothers maybe despite being 21 years old and 8 years old and they look alike
It wasn't scandalous for men to have children out of wedlock it happened all the time the father's would sometimes claim the children and royal bastards had even been given titles in the past. It was more scandalous for a female servant to have a child out of wedlock she would of been let go from her position because it would bring shame on the household she was working for.

If he's one of many, since she called the other living tea cups his brothers & sisters Mrs. Potts could have had him later in life
what if chip was abandoned by the entchantress after having the encounter with the beast? She placed the old begger curse on herself to see if the prince was true to lloving her, not for her beautiful looks, as it turns out no, with having rection and feeling betrated leaving chip alone, mrs pots finds him to claim as her own, therefore meaning no one trully knows of chips origins besides the enchantress herself.
This theory does not hold water. If The Prince was 21 years old in the original animated film, that means he was 11 or 12 when he fathered Chip! Remember that Lumiere:
said "Ten years we've been rusting..." in the song lyrics of Be Our Guest.
If Chip is Prince Adam’s son and The Enchantress is his mother then maybe she tried not to curse their child but accidentally did but it got reversed in the end and he got a new mother in Belle technically so Prince Adam cheated on the Enchantress with Belle
I would think it was more likely that Chip was the Beast’s half sibling since he was 11? when he was cursed. Maybe a child of his father and one of the staff.

Chip calling Pots mom instead of grandma isn't as crazy as you think. It actually depends on how old Chip was when given to or taken in by Pots. If Pots is the only mom he's known then why would he call her grandma? Especially if no one bothers to correct him. Which there could be many reasons for. I bring this up because something similar has actually happened in my family and instead of calling her grandma, she does straight up call her mom.
The Prince is 21 and Chip is 7. There’s no way the Prince can be his bio dad. He’s too young to be Chip’s father. He’s only 13 years older then him
According to one of the spinoff comics they did decades ago, Chip's not the only child. There's I believe 12 children of Ms. Pott's and we see them in the movie when chip goes to sleep in the cupboard. My great grandma had 13 children and she was having them well into her mid-late 40s so I think it's more realistic that Ms. Potts had a lot of children with Chip included. Also could be Ms. Potts takes in orphaned children.

It's MORE likely Mrs. Potts was Chip's GRANDMA. Given to her as a baby (maybe his mom/her daughter/son died), he just grew up AS a teacup knowing her as Mama.

About the aging: only biologically living organisms age. Like skin ages, but pocelan does not. So I would suggest only beast has aged physically while all the others aged mentally or not at all.
Maybe mrs. Potts being an older mother is why chip is a little damaged?

The beast is the only one who ages since he's the only one who isn't an inanimate object. He was also only 10 or 11 years old when he was cursed. He matured as the beast because he was the beast for over a decade. He cannot be Chip's father.

Can you make another Theory about Why the Director of the live action movie in 2017 brought Mr Potts out of the blue or why Mr Potts was not in the cartoon back in 1991?
I think what you’re observing is less a literal presentation of the Beast and Chip being related. The servants got cursed because they participated in a system where they were little more than utensils as much as the prince behaved as a beast. Chip may well resemble the prince because he’s a representation of the innocence the prince once had and how spurious the distinction between people based on class is to begin with.

Edit: also it's not likely for the Beast to be chips father, because the numbers really don't add up. It could be more likely that mrs. Potts is chip's mother's mom or his father's mom, something happened to both of them and mrs. Potts took care of him as her own child, and a resort of that he calls her his mom.

I think it's more possible that chip could be the prince's younger brother given the slightly similar features. But the whole being the prince's son with the enchantress would make no sense. Cause according to Lumiere they were cursed for ten years. And if the rose would start losing its petals when the prince turned 21, that would mean he would have been 11 when he was cursed. And he looked sort like he was 11 in the xmas movie. And it would make sense that when the servants were cursed as objects that the aging process would be paused or slowed. And the biggest plot hole of all is that if Chip was the enchantress son that would mean he was part Fairy and have Magical Powers which would have surfaced when he was a kid. And plus it would sensible for her to take chip when she cursed the castle instead of cursing him too.

Also, the theory doesn’t hold weight at all considering that there was a calculation performed that noted the prince at the time of the curse would have been I think 11 years old. So no the enchantress could not have been the beasts ex girlfriend that young. The fact that she cursed everyone seems to indicate that they were involved somehow in setting her off and as they supported a child that was going to become cruel due to their unwillingness to not indulge his behavior. She hence turned him into a monster which pretty much said, “Have fun with trying to tame what you have created guys.” Giving the staff their punishment but granting the prince a chance to become a better person, being that he was still so young.
To add, it would have been an interesting premise for a film. One that would depict the beast as young and growing up with the weight of the curse on his shoulders. At first he would have no interest in breaking it at all being that he’s 11 and in that scenario, I don’t think that he would have really cared much about the lives of the staff either. Rather, breaking the curse would have been more for himself than anything else at some point. One staff member could be a person that he becomes most fond of in terms of having a substitute parent and seeing how his staff can sometimes be kind he grow to consider their welfare, albeit still being a beast and hot tempered. He could become crueler at the loss of his substitute parent which would set the stage for the animated film we all know. It may be a crummy idea but in terms of making sense of chips origin, maybe it would shed light on things.

Alright, it's pretty sound logic. Except for one thing. If Chip is her son...and she was upset at him being taken and raised by another family, then why include him in the curse? Why not curse the prince qnd servants but spare Chip and steal him away? If she was that powerful, then she could have done exactly that. But even Chip was placed under the curse. If he is her son, why was he not spared?
Hey what if Mrs Potts and Mr Potts ask the enchantress for a child and since we never know what knew what her real hair color was since she was too old she could have been blonde or Mr Potts could have been blonde

Social class didn’t matter. It was considered a scandal if you had a child out of wedlock during this period. So it could very well have been Mrs. Potts’ family member or some other individual’s… Nice theory but not a concrete one because using contemporary times culture logic.

It should depend on how time works differently in the castle. If the beast is the only one that ages, that would make sense.

We know that there was at least 10 years (According to Lumiere) that they have been in their current state. If Chip is 7 years old as you said, we must assume (since he looks to be around 7 yrs old BEFORE they were transformed) that this is an additional 7 years, on top of the 10 years spent in their cursed state that Chip has been Mrs. Potts son. Let us say that Google is right and Mrs. Potts is around 50 years old. Subtract 17 years from 50 and she would have been 33 yrs old when Chip was born....still well within child-bearing age. And while it is LESS LIKELY that an older woman would have a child, women do give birth later in life. So even IF time froze during the decade that they were cursed, she would have had Chip at 44....it would be plausible that she could still have a child. And if the Enchantress really is Chip's mother, WHY does he call Mrs. Potts "Mama" and why is he with Mrs. Potts BEFORE the Enchantress came to curse the castle? Why would the Enchantress curse her own child? Why not take Chip with her after she cursed everyone?
Back in the day, enchantress and fairies and gods would curse or give boons to random people just for doing things or being rude to them? Like helping them cross the street or tell the truth or what have you.
The theory doesn't hold a lot of water, it's riddled with holes for this version of the tale. (Animated, there's a whole other issue with the live action)
I'd heard the old version of the tale was similar. A queen at war needed the help of a fairy to win, and offered her only begotten son as payment. The fairy raised the boy as her own and began to fall in love with him when he reached adulthood (gross!) And tried to seduce him. When he denied her, she cursed him into being a beast until he could find true love (thinking only she could love him).
He started seeping into a maidens dreams and the story plays outnpretty similar. Captive father, offers daughter as placement. Beauty takes his place, keeps seeing prince in dreams and every night beast asks her to marry him. It's not until he is dying of a broken heart that she confesses her love and he turns back.
The fairy kept a magical force field around a moat to keep the prince away from the world and he had invisible servants rather than furniture.
But for Disney, no one was really putting much thought into the ages when they put it out. 🤷♀️
Adam was 11 when he was cursed (pretty sure it was on Christmas too, thus why they don't celebrate it for the sequel).

He was 11 he had til his 21st birthday not 20th 10 find love and it would definitely make more sense for them to be maybe brothers or half siblings or cousins but not father and son
Also beauty and the beast is a book. The director and animators don’t get the backstory of random ppl and facts from the author if the author is involved at all! So explain how the animators and director could or would be trying to “tell us something” as you say?
Disney said he was 21 and it was 10 years, but if you look at the movie again you see he was older then 11 when he met enchantress ( maybe late teen early 20's) and whe he met Bell who was in her late teens; he was probably in his thirty's.
I love this movie, it is one of my favorites; the real version is much sadder ( the real beast had Wolfman syndrome and the "queen force a girl from her court to marry and have babies with him to make more Wolfman syndrome and sell them as pets). She learns to love him and died like a day or so apart. Disney's version Mrs. Pots was probably chip's adoptive mother, because in the real story nobody knows what happened to the hairless kids (aka "chip"). I believe chip can be beast's son, but not the enchantress

The absences of the "royals" - like I said, where' the king and queen - perhaps allowed the village to thrive- they wouldn't be having to raise animals & food the royals. Also, Mrs Potts could be the nanny - again like rich people, they hire someone else to raise the children, Chip COULD be a royal - but because the King & Queen are absent in all the films -the kids all call her Mom (or Mum)
This theory is.... 'interestin.' I can see some resemblance between Adam/The Beast since both are blondes/gingers (i'm throwing ginger in there because to me, sometimes ginger hair looks on the blonde side to me) but uh well, Adam is/was roughly about 10-11 at the time of him being cursed, if we're just going by the subtle clues sprinkled throughout the first movie, the part of Be Our Guest where Lumiere sings about ten years have passed and they need so much more than dusting, is an indicator that they've been cursed for 10 years and then the bit about the last rose petal falling and the beast having to find love before his 21st birthday indicates he's at least 20 before last rose petal will fall. And while I understand that in ages past, royals were expected to have heirs as soon as possible and teens were often paired up with spouses much older than themselves (esp girls), it seems kinda strange that the enchantress would have a baby with a ten year old boy... maybe Chip is a relative of Adam's something. If we can suspend our disbelief and go with Adam being 21 already or say he was at the marrying age, why would the Enchantress get with Adam (or vice versa) when she ends up cursing him for being spoiled and unkind?
She needs to read the book about the beast in that villain book collection first

Maybe Chips parents were servants who died before he could remember them and the servants looked after him, since they were his only family. Mrs. Potts may have helped deliver him and his mother actually died after giving birth to him. The prince could possibly be the father. But the father also could be another servant, a knight or any noblemen of the court. It's to much of an open book, that I think it could go either way.
The only thing I always wondered about was that Mrs. Potts was too old to have a small child. I know it's not impossible by today's standards but back then you were lucky if you had surviving children let alone be in your 50s and still have a healthy child. But as with everything else, sounds a bit sketchy in theory
