That tag as controller part was awesome! Never knew about that after using maya for over 10 years.. Funny how you always learn something new when seeing other people work or explain things in maya. I wonder if you can make those really fancy controllers with that mouse over effect, by the way. You know, those on-face and on body controls, where the controllers are hidden away in the mesh..
These videos are so great. Best course ever. It is so hard to find something deep enough to understand all the peculiarities of rigging, especially when you are just learning smth new. Thank you so much, man.
Best rigging tutorials out there on youtube! I bought a course in Rigging for maya quite a while back and wasn't sure if the groups and curve controls was the main workflow. Turns out it is but how unintuitive rigging is in Maya. No wonder making a Maya rig takes such a long time. Thanks for making these tutorials, they really are a godsend!

thank you so much for all your rigging tutorials! i'm in uni and i'm supposed to rig a character i made as part of an exam, and all your tutorials are really really helping. anyway i found a small problem, that is, when parenting two shapes through mel one would always disappear, turns out i just had to freeze the transforms on them both; it was probably obvious to you, but i didn't know ahah. thank you so much again!
hey! really like these videos. been rigging in 3ds max for years and those really helped me to walk through the basics and ease my learning of maya. Thumbs up!
Another optional way to allign ctrl(or ctrl offset) to joints it is to move the ctrl(or ctrl offset) under the joint and reset transformation. Thank you!
Hello sir, my name is Mahmud I have been following your rigging basics tutorial, and it has been much help, God bless you so much, pls i want to know if you would continue, and i hope you teach a car rigg system as well.. More grease to you sir..
This tutorial is probably really good, only I found it kind-of incomprehensible around 16-18. I mean I was doing what you were doing on my rig but the values weren't going into the group, they were staying on the curve. It's pretty complicated actually! So the trick was the right combination of freezing transforms and centering pivot...
@15.00 first unparent the ctrl from the bone, then freeze the transforms , then constrain the bone to the ctrl and you can zero the ctrl. That way you dont need the offset group
First, let me say this is great help. I have some questions though: 16:36 you say to lock and hide the transforms for the offset group, but 18:30 you say the offset group is to apply any transforms, etc to that group. Just wondering what I'm missing here.
Hello and thank you for the great tutorial. I don't remember you mention it, but I assume the controllers should have the same rotation order then the bone they are constrained to?
Jóhann Leó yes that’s correct or you will end up with different values on each which will cause flipping. I think I just kept them at the default for these basic tutorials but we will look into them more once we investigate roll joints etc.
Hi, thank you very much for your tutorial. Actually, I have problems here when I have done with the serval control building, I find out the joints are disconnected with each other. For example, I finished shoulder, elbow, hand control, and then I find out all the controls and joints were some kind of disconnect, my shoulder cannot control elbow and hand. Thanks for your time.
Is there any significance in just combining the two controls (iris and eye) and deleting history rather than parenting? Does it affect anything down the line?
Hey, really helpful tutorials, keep up the good work. I am having an issue see when i rig a car the steering wheel of car is at an acute angle and when i rotate it, it is not rotating as it is supposed to and I am having this problem with many things like my bicycle seat is a lil tilted and i wanna add shock absorber to it and the same problem coz the pivots are not at their ideal position, can u please guide me with that.. i am creating a show reel on my own and your guidence can be really helpful... Thank you
Love the videos mate. However I'm struggling to set my gizmo orientation up so its similar to yours. I've followed step by step and rewatched, but my orientation looks nothing like yours. It always has to set to world axis but I want it to match joint axis. I've been stuck on this for literal hours :D. Anyways, any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
This was a great and east tutorial thank you! But I have one question, now that the controller are under groups, how do we set up the controllers Hierarchy? When I try to do this the controllers and joints jump to random locations and mess everything up? I want the upper arm controller to be a parent of the lower arm, then wrist etc?
@@antCGi Yea, basically you said in your video we could hide and lock the group once we had set up the controllers and thats what was causing it to jump to weird positions when i tried to setup a Hierarchy, but removing this lock has fixed it :)
Emmanuel Obiri thanks! Do you mean the names? Those are annotations and you can add them in the Create > Annotations menu I think...I’d need to check though 😊
exellent tutorial but i have one question. Why don not use the match transformation whith the group instead of constrainting to have the axe of rotation like this none of the groupe or the controlleur have value? I dont know if my question is clear but i still ask.
Hi! Well there’s just me working on these, and each video takes me about a week to produce. A few days planning, a day to record the video and write the script and a few days to edit it all together. I work on these in my spare time too, so that means they take longer to make unfortunately.
Hello my friend. Thanks for your videos. I've got a question as my professor told me that freezing transformations on nurbs was a big mistake, and you should turn values to 0 with reset tool, but when I use this the nurbs goes to the initial position. What's your opinion about this? Cause I'm getting crazy and I see you have no issue doing freezing.
I follow this tut and I met a problem. Two groups each with a controller. How to parent them properly. Cos everytime I parent them, one of a group and controller just move to different place. Dont want to stay put
You would have to create a loop so it worked through every selected controller. Then use something like this - cmds.setAttr((iconName + ".overrideRGBColors"), 1) cmds.setAttr ((iconName + ".overrideColorRGB"), colour[0], colour[1], colour[2])
@@antCGi thanks but what if I don't want to select al the Controllers? I want to list all the Controllers that has R in it and then apply that command? So that instead of selecting all the Controllers,I have to select only one?
When I parent the control to the shoulder. The whole arm rotates fine. When I add another control to the elbow, the elbow rotates fine but the shoulder control is stuck. I can see bone trying to rotate but it cant rotate the whole arm. Know how to fix this?
I'm having the exact same problem :( Anyone know how to fix this yet? I followed the same instructions with the elbow and wrist and now the shoulder and the elbow are stuck (only attempting to rotate). @antCGi
@16:19 my cntrl still has values unlike the video, why? I freeze transformed, centered point the pivot on the group but when I add the constraint my cntrl still has values after I delete the cntrl?
I’m having the same issue too! If you ever figure out why this is happening please let me know… and if I can figure this out I’ll do the same for you too 😊
How did the groups come on hierarchy, if I'm parenting them, they are changing its position coz of the translate values in the groups which were locked???

If you're parenting the groups you need to unlock them first, or they try to maintain their values so end up moving.
