  • Swedish heavy metal, with a helping of guitar rifts, some barefoot drum kicks, a dash of fire and a whole heap of historical themed lyrics, and you have a recipe for Sabaton. What an experience!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Sabaton for the first time, performing "Uprising” live at the Polish Woodstock Festival in 2012.

Your question about the hair care is funny, because a lot of metal guys didnt take care about their hair. They let them growing and the most of them use normal shampos. Its a traditional thing in the metal scene. Punks have Mohawks and Metalheads have long hair, it was a symbol of status and stand for the difference between goth, punks and metalheads, every side had their own hairstyle. But yes... there a lot of little male princess under metalheads XD

Saw some Polish flags there in the audience. Sabaton did an epic song about the battle of Vienna in i think 1483 when a huge army of Ottomans lay siege to Vienna and the HRE emperor called upon its princes and allies to relieve them. They gathered their men and marched for Vienna. The Polish army consisted of mainly cavalry and arguably the best of their time at the end of cavalry charges being relevant.
The Winged Hussars charged down the mountain side and defeated the Ottoman army in spectacular way. If the Ottomans had taken Vienna, the road towards the north and west of Europa for expansion would have been open. The Polish of that era saved the rest of Europe from muslim invasion and yes there are many heroic tales regarding the Polish. Sabaton is the band to underscore every single event in history that can be classified as heroic and i bet the Polish in the crowd love them for just that.

And hopefully more understanding for some polish irritability on some topics. This Uprising took about 230000 civil victims bombed, raped, murdered, burned, slayed, buried alive, executed by Germans (with some help of Ukrainian Kossak, Russian, Lithuanian and Azer units - mostly volunteer bandits). So please, understand when we sometimes get nervous about the history 🤷‍♂

So he was just a happy accident lol. He has such a distinctive wonderful deep voice, I'm really glad they kept him and eventually transitioned to more focus on the vocals than keyboard. I would so recomend the live version with them of "En livstid i krig"/"A life time of war". Choose the Swedish version and have the captions turned on. The song is released in both English and Swedish versions BUT there is a major difference. Both are about the 30-years war. The Swedish version is from the perpective of a single soldier where the english version focused more on the war itself. Joakims singing qualitys and baritone really comes inte play...AND if you like crowds singing it back, The Swedes are singing the majority of the first verse agfter Joakim has just sung the opening line.

If you want to read more about the historical context for this song, check out a book called Rising '44. It's about the Warsaw Uprising, and there's one moment that always stuck out to me in which the son of the Polish Premier or some such political figure was fighting on a corner against the Nazis as they believed the Allies were approaching. The kid's dad had specifically placed him in that location. When things started getting bad, this fellow soldiers and heroes said they needed to go. Then, this teenage kid said "that's not why my father put me here." He was later burned by a German flame thrower. The heroism has moved me to tears on more than one occasion.

He was never able to return, dying before the collapse of communism. I was able to visit in 1992, and tried to find my family. For the "crime" of fighting in 1939, helping local Jews flee and fighting in the resistance, they had been sent to the camps. As far as I can find out, none came out. Keep it strong. One thing I would like to add that's quite impressive on Joachim's part is that in the last bit of chorus, which is in Polish ("Warszawo, walcz!"), he's gotten the phonemes for "sz" (/ʂ/) and "cz" (/t͡ʂ/) perfectly.
From my experience, no one outside of Poland gets these right (which is understandable, it takes a LOT of niche experience to differentiate /d͡ʐ/, /ʂ/, /t͡ʂ/, and /ʐ/, as almost no languages ever make use of them), and it's almost always mispronounced as /ɕ/ or /t͡ɕ/; to have someone entirely non-Slavic nail it down is as rare as it is appreciated. :)

Sabaton is a very special band. All their songs are about significant historical events. And their music videos are always incredibly creative depictions of those events.

I've seen some people suggesting it, but In "livstid i krig" is one of the most beautiful songs of Sabaton (there is an English version if it, "Lifetime of War" which is quite good too)

You should listen to them sing 40:1 later in this same concert, and then wait about a minute after that song ends to see something amazing (you need the video of the full concert for this, but it's totally worth it)

I was skeptical about how a vocal analyst reaction video would play, but this is my first video of yours I’m watching and you’ve already gotten me hooked! I love the way you notice such specific details (I’ve watched the video dozens of times and never noticed the drummer was barefoot) and you point out why the music is so good by deconstructing what makes it stick and land so well. I want to start making music one day, and this has been really helpful!
You’ve got a new subscriber and fan! :D

Sabaton is a unique band with a special connection to the crowd. I remember seeing them in Download Festival Paris under buckets of rain. For a lot of bands that day people were watching from afar under the drinking tents but for Sabaton everybody was hooked up to the stage. Tech crew was mopping the stage, Joakim had to change his mic 3 times but the energy everybody was sharing hold the band and public together in a way I didn't felt anywhere else, not even at a Rammstein show. I have chills thinking back about it.
And I'm glad to see that kind of reactions about Joakim's voice because he worked a lot on it : he wasn't supposed to be the singer at first and only sung on the first drafts and finally stick to that role and worked on it to be better. I think that's awesome.

I do love me some Sabaton. I saw them live, when they came here with Nightwish, a few years ago. Their live energy is unmatched. I've been to tons of metal shows and they stood out.
Maybe give "Ghost Division" a shot next.
