  • In this video I test the Technics SL-1210MK2 and the Technics SL-1200MK7 to see if they can both hold the same tune from start to finish without drifting from each other at zero pitch using the song Finally by Ce Ce Peniston. How accurate is their pitch at zero?

    Main advantage of mk7 is that it’s brand new. There are lots of Frankenstein MK2s around now sporting aftermarket non-Technics parts. So they are no longer like for like.

    I love my MK7's, solid units, no issues and keep their time/pitch etc locked in better any other turntable I've used. For the doubters and MK7 haters there's plenty of Vinyl Mixes on my channel using the MK7's which barely miss a beat (shameless plug 😂)... but for anyone contemplating a brand new pair of MK7's I say go for it. Great units 👍

    Nice experiment and I'm glad it worked out...HOWEVER, when doing speed tests like this, you have to make sure you using EXACT DUPLICATES of the vinyl you select. What I mean by that is that the vinyl has to come from the EXACT SAME PRESSING STAMPER. Vinyl companies get copies of songs on tape, and create stampers from those copies. Therein lies the potential variations because a tape deck in one location may not have the EXACT SAME speed settings as one in another location, thus creating 2 slightly different copies of the same song. The way you verify this is by looking at the etchings in the lead out grooves of the record and note the signatures, catalogue numbers, and other identifying one off marks to insure you actually have 2 copies of the EXACT same vinyl. What's funny is that I found this out by accident when I did the SAME TEST but on two copies of Good Times by Chic and by the end of the song, they were slightly off. I looked closer at the vinyl and noticed that one copy was from CANADA, and another copy was created domestically. At that point the Technics 1200's actually proved that I WAS WRONG, and they were right...lol. My confidence in them never wavered from that point.

    4:32 you know what the numbers next to the red light do and where the screw is inside the deck under the platter that you turn to adjust and calibrate them back perfect? (so when pitch is on +6 the red dot thats on the +6 level will be dead still ) .... and the one that adjusts the brake to skid or stop more sudden ;) nice setup

    • @Toskas
      @Toskas  10 місяців тому

      Thanks heaps. Yes. I know about that. If the pitch at 0% line up with the dots being still means you don't need to calibrate with a potentiometer. Can be done from under the cover that's under the platter for the rest of the pitch range, from the top right, usually a blue screw. The thing is, there is now talk that the 6% is wrong and the print should have read 6.4% like the mk5 and after. Mine lines up with the dots not moving at 6.4%. I'm still trying to see how true this information is. My deck has been been rarely used and I was wondering how the pitch fader was that far out at 6%. Then I was told from one technician that the print on the deck is wrong and it should in fact read 6.4%. Interesting as there are quite a few vids on UA-cam where people have calibrated the 6%at 6% because their calibration was out supposedly, as their pitch was showing at around 6.4%. Seems quite a few have been at 6.4% before they calibrate. So I'm now wondering.

      one of mine did fall from a my old house balcony and only broke the cover ,for my surprise ,that ´s why a turntable should always have a cover , also because the dust gathered with the static energy on records, when working off course it´s handy to not have them but after, always covered normally with a piece of cloth in discos to cover the turntable and mixing table, in the past was unthinkable to not have a cover for the turntable ,the Pro-Ject turntables do not have them and associated with poor building quality and bad sound a around 1.000€ piece of bit´s of plastic and MDF or whatever ,make`em not aceptable,if at least they reproduce records with quality it was a half of a turntable , some think that the turntable only spins records ,well open a sl-1200 and look if it´s only to turn tables, the MM cartridges do reveal in new turntables or old 1/3 of the volume or even less that shows the worst qiality of expensive cartridges , i have a controll amplifier who as two inputs for phono and now i would not use them having output level and impedance, to spend money on a pre-amplifier , the cheaper old turntable i own from the 70´s it´s several times above 2.000€ quality and it´s cartridge it´s so high quality that i can´t imagine how would cost today such a quality turntable as i have tested a lot of cartridges from cheap to crazy expensive ones, normally to correctn the sound of a P10 i bought this last december i use the tape monitor and the rec level in monotor of the cassette deck it works much better than any pre-amplifier if under 500€, i notice some critising well produced records as their pre is damaging the quality of the output sound , one spends a lot of money is a cartridge with a few hours of listening and with some pre-amplifiers cut half of it´s sound quality, i put a new good cartridge in a old technics SL-3100 from 1977 and how low it make it sound but when bringing the volume up it sure sounds good just not like they use to make them, one never had to worry about the hours of use and detectable by hear when getting old

      Yo man Please support Technics and buy a brand new pair of Mk7s. You cant expect them to make money and keep producing turntables if you keep your decks forever. Still keep them but as a token of appreciation do your due diligence and pick up a fresh pair of Mk7s. They are excellent for mixing and scratching. Yes compared to a mk2 they are different and not made as sturdy but for home use they are fine. Just imagine the euphoria you will receive unboxing a brand new set aswell as opening a fresh pair of Ortofon Club MK2s to pair with them. Also you can set the LEDs on them to an amazing blue colour which looks so fresh and much better than the old red/yellow/green on the mk2. SO what are you waiting for? Just finance the pair on Affirm and pay monthly for a year. It's only 250$ USD a month. You won't even notice the money coming out. Then a year later it's over and you have yourself a fresh pair payed off. Thank me later :)

    • @Toskas
      @Toskas  Місяць тому +1

      @@Angelo1991x I like both sets. When you have both sets like I do you get to see the differences and to part with one set would mean I would miss something from the other set. I find the MK7 a little easier to mix on. I like that I can change the strobe colour from blue to red and vice versa. I also like the different torque platter settings. I also like that you can buy them brand new. From the MK2's I like the look more especially the deeper plinth. I don't like the 7's narrow slimmer plinth. The stickers look nicer on the 2's. I like that they are heavier and are more solid. I have added a 15 inch sub woofer to my studio, 1500 watts RMS. The MK2's start to give a feedback hum with the volume just on half or 12 o'clock position on the dial on my a9 mixer. With the 7's the feedback begins at around 10 to 11 o'clock position. This is because they are lighter and don't have as much isolation material as the 2's. So the 2's have the advantage there. If I really had to pick I'd pick the MK2's, for looks, isolation, nostalgia and solid build but they would have to be in pristine condition for my taste. If I didn't find the ones I found, I'd stay with the 7's. Also if you don't use a powerful subwoofer the 7's have no problem. So all in all, the MK2's would be my pick by a bit.

      @ thanks for your reply! i had mk2s in the past! now i wanted to buy them again, but all you can find around is junk! if i dont find anything good i go for mk7s. i saw around the web that they are also used for big events and by important djs! so the story of the distortion is maybe more of a paranoia of amateur djs!

    • @Toskas
      @Toskas  Місяць тому +1

      @Angelo1991x yes. I've seen 1210 mk7's used at a big techno festival and also 1200 mk7's used by Ferry Corsten and Ruben De Ronde at an event. They probably used isolation techniques for the issue. At festivals, even the 2's need isolation. The 7's don't distort. Their sound quality is top notch. The problem is they hum with big bass, however you can buy isolation feet and also use other techniques to help the issue which I'm not too familiar with. I think placing the decks on cement helps. Or/and half tennis balls under the feet. Apart from that the sound quality is right up there. Having said that the MK2's hum as well, but at a higher volume than the 7's. I still need to isolate my 2's if I want to get big volume out of my sub woofer. I turn the volume down to avoid the hum of the 2's. So even with the 2's I'm not getting to the volume I want when I want to pump up the sound. The 7's hum at an even lower volume. I've tested them. So really if you want big bass even the 2's need more isolation. I too would buy the 7's over junk 2's. I used to have 2's. Sold them in the year 2000. Bought the 7's in 2022, then found one immaculate 1210 mk2, so I bought it, then a brand new unopened 1210 MK3D and grabbed that too. The video is on my channel unboxing it. So now I have the old 1210's and the new 1200's and I wouldn't part with either of them.

    This doesn't make sense, try beatmaching with two different vinyls first with mk7 and then mk2. Why did you get the 1210mk2? In your first videos you stated that the mk7s were the best

    • @Toskas
      @Toskas  11 місяців тому +2

      This was my first experiment. It is to show that at zero pitch the 19 year old MK2's pitch is working correctly similar to brand new mk7's. I will do more checks at different percentages and also mixes. I used to own Mk2's back in the eighties and sold them in 1998 when I moved to Greece. I bought the mk7's a couple of years ago because I wanted brand new. But I always wanted MK2's again for nostalgia since I had them before but it would have to be an immaculate set. I also bought it to do test videos as everyone says this or that works better but show no proof. At the beginning I said that the mk7 is better than the MK2 to mix on. I also mentioned that the mk7 doesn't have the best isolation and with big bass or at a club environment their is feedback noise as they are 7 kg as opposed to 12 kg mk2's. Having the MK2 in front of me, I find the mk7's easier to mix on. At least now it's not from memory from 1998 but I have it in front of me and my memory ended up being correct. I find that with the 7's I get the beats in beat quicker. I feel the pitch is more precise on the 7's and the platter needs less effort to slow down by hand meaning easier to mix on. The mk7's will be my go to decks. The 2's for experiments, a big party with big bass and to have as collectibles. Need to find one more immaculate one though. I went black to match the rest of the gear even though my first MK2's were silver

      I sold the MK7s after a month to buy the GRs but also having 2 pairs of Mk2s (2 1210s and 2 1200s) I realized that on the older ones I struggle less in beatmaching between one disc and another. I did various tests and the only thing that really improved was the motor cogging, everything else got worse.

I can't get my head around it. I would think playing the same track is the best test as the difference would be easier to pick up if there was drifting. Maybe I'm not seeing all the angles properly.

    If the red strobe light is constant on both then they will perform the same number of rotations in an equal time. That's what the strobe is for. If the pitch is not 0 to get the red strobes equal then adjust the pot inside or return it faulty, as it should be factory set to 0 to get a set speed.

However if the TT is in pitch control and speed is correct but the but the pitch is not on 0 then the 0 can be reset internally, direct drive motors have a pot to adjust the 0 set, with Quartz lock set off.

    while the MK7's appear to keep their speed you'll have problems with them in the future. Malaysian built. Get yourself another mint MK2 if you haven't already. Great setup otherwise!

      Please support Technics and buy a brand new pair of Mk7s.

      @@dustinkirk4515 No its not. Just because it's different than a mk2 doesent make it bad. It's actually great for mixing and scratching. All of the issues they had have been fixed. MK7 is brand new ot the box fresh. You cant go wrong.

      @@dustinkirk4515 MK7s get a ton of hate because most people dont want to shell out 3000 Canadian on a pair of new turntables and would rather join the bandwagon and just smash them instead. I get that. But you cant compare a turntable such as the Mk7 to the mk2. Its different. JustTechnics the guy who works on mk2 actually sold his MK2s for Mk7 and he was a big basher of them when they first came out but changed his opinion. That speaks for itself. Just excuse you dont want to spend 3k on a pair dont hate on them. They are still good turntables. Yes different than a Mk2. Less robust, heavy, etc but it does have some improvements too like the motor.
