Most of these parts are 100% interchangeable, and it's probably better that the deck reached you with working parts from the wrong make of table than broken. It's only when people claim that the deck is near mint that it's a problem.

those board interconnects are not just twisted on, they are wire-wrapped with a special tool. wire wrapping makes a very high quality connection as good or better than soldering, and was used for prototyping and limited production for computers and electronics up until through-hole gave way to surface-mount construction.
Really interesting vid and thanks for the heads up! One thing I will say, with the rising costs for Technics in the used market, why would you not just pay the extra and get a pair of new MK7s so that you completely eliminate the risk of these Frankendecks?
@@tofunuggets1 have you seen the break down videos Of the MK7? They’re objectively worse than it’s predecessors. The materials are cheaper, More plastic, pitch control is digital and not as accurate as say the MK5’s analog pitch control. I can go on, but there are a lot of reviews out there. For a $1k price tag they should be superior. But there is a lot left to be desired. For $300-$400 more you can get a pair of ‘mint’ mk5’s

I bought three SL1210mk2's out of a Hi-Fi shop for Pennies back In the 80's. They were ordered by a customer, and he never came back. They had no idea what they were or used for. So I said I would take them off their hands (No Returns then) and they said yes. I still have them and the original box's as well.
So the HIFI shop that supplied them new in the first place had no idea what they were and sold them to you for a fraction of the value? Cool story bro.

Been through some sh*t trying to get a pair of these imported from Japan. After a month of waiting I ended up receiving a USB cable in the post. Guys ebay acct is suspended now. Yeah cheers mate. Ended up having to buy a pair locally from some moron that was using a slipmat on top of the rubber slipmat. These decks are now mostly in possession of utter thugs and clueless knob heads that think they're sitting on a gold mine when it's usually a massively damaged, scratched up piece of sh*t example of a deck that they expect mint condition prices for. There's two locals I've dealt with are selling 100v imports from Japan - it took a lot of pressuring them to admit that they weren't even in our local voltage and neither seemed to see how that would devalue them even slightly... "Just use the step up transformer".. How about f**k you? It's been an absolute headache just to get a pair of these and I am frankly burnt out from it all. I do have a pair of mk3d's now that I've converted to 240v so hopefully thats the end of having to deal with dipsh*ts.
mk7's are that bad hey? i got my mk2's as a teen way back when, trough thick and thin, been dead broke not knowing how i was going to keep the lights on and never once did i think, i should sell these, but been thinking because of their age i should be looking for a new pair to have on hand, too bad jay is doesn't take jobs internationally right now, I'd feel a lot better and i don't trust anyone in my area
Say a person is not concerned with having a genuine or all original Technics... just a good turntable that works well... what places would be good to deal with? If I wasn't even bothered that the deck is a Tech at all, just a turntable of decent quality, at a decent price... Audio-Technica 1240 or Reloop 7000 Mk2 ? Or is there something better for a similar price?
I know they're only work horses. Quality wise they ain't saying much. Put one next to a linn sondek say then you'll know what I mean. Even the rega plannar 3 sound better.
Most turntables will only sound as good as the pre amp it runs through, I found the pre amps on the audio technica just OK,. I do have my Technics connected to an Allen heath DB2 and it sound so good, For the audio technica AT LP 1240, I had my eyes on schiit mani phono pre amp

Well 'well were does one start. I bought two SL 1200s 15 plus years ago and are working in good order and 5 or 6 years ago bought another one which have not used yet and reason is I'm trying build 3 Deck system' and other Deck was scratched by a cat or dog side the lid it self, and the rest is ok. I bought it for £150.00 at and some point I need take a look inside to make sure it a genuine SL1200 I will be very disappointed but, having say it could be the last of true SL1200 I hope so, even though I bought £150.00 at the time, now you've got thinking and I'll have wait until I setup and take a look to see and have this feeling they are the real deal' the phones look the old not this USB BS, and I'll check Jay on his video presentation Mo thank for bringing this to our attention, it reminds of something do you remember the kit car in the early 90s a throwback 2 different cars put together, it not to say I drive and just Example as to what was back than and now the SL1200/10 is Under threat and became Obsolete ,you see it coming because, DJ don't want carry vinyl like they use to ,and digital age has take over, and manufactures ,are make vests sums of because, some DJs are lazy, and want press buttons, and not use turntable's any more, and manufactures ,are ''laughing'' at the upcoming DJ who soled Decks or to up with jones and keep with latest trends and don't want to put the work in and, downloading the latest sounds, it very well having that 'but DJing is still an art ,as far as I'm concerned I'm not being funny no one really looks at DJs the same way they use to, one there on their laptop, and no one takes any notice, and if we didn't allow to happen Decks will be around for long time' it break my heart to hear this, this has to be said' I don't say this often but I'm going to say it any way. If CDs was a thing that money could buy CDs would live, and records would die! and reason I say this because records getting so expensive and CDs cheap, and cheerful, and you know true so, I still love my vinyl. I know there is history and a story tell, and with CDs you can't tell a story, one you can't see the label, speed, cover listing of track, and think these new SL1200/1210 only last 5 years I've decks second hand and sold them to buy new one ,and 15 years plus and still going strong, on that note long the SL1200/10 we need them backing the club and the CDs to stay in the computer and only for demos and for playing otherwise will this problem for to come and let us all go back to basics so we save the SL1200/10 from becoming thing of past...!! Stay blessed 🙏🏿🙏🏿😇😇Mo and Jay keep the good work🤛🏿👊🏿🤜🏿
I (TV engineer) couldn't understand why everything should be original. I cut off the original (super cheap) RCA plugs on my SL-1210 MK2 back in 1994 because the middle contact got stuck in a "high-end" RCA socket.
Hi Guys, One quite Major point of Concern. "J " was saying about the "Skate " Cap not having the Correct Numbers on. I think he said it should go up to 6 ? But it actually only went up to 3. The Scale / Calibration of how much Skate is applied in alignment with Counterbalance / Stylus Weight Setting would be out of Wack and would therefore be Detrimental to Stylus Ware and / or your Precious Vinyl Collection. Regards Andy
The Mk5s do indeed have a scale on that cap which goes up to 6, so whilst you absolutely have a point, you should probably take it up with Technics. ;)
I have 2 M5g's with about an hours use on them both sat in original boxes with every single piece of original equipment, shells, shure cartridges, paperwork, everything! Seems bad to have them boxed up doing nothing but I don't know if I could let them go..
I bought 2 MK3 from Japan. Both are in excellent condition. A 40 dollar step down voltage box and I was in business. Seriously considering a 1200g for my home system.
I hate that there are idiots out there doing this bs. I buy/sell and repair these gorgeous decks. I have never had to worry about this particular issue. I think because there are more people staying home, this is more frankendecks being made. If you do want to buy a pair. There are a lot in australia. Usual price you wanna pay is depemdant on condition of course, but around 1200au each is what your looking at paying. Maybe more in good condition, less in bad. We have a lot here down under. But this really could become an issue in maybe 10 years from now. I have been collecting since 2011, have not had any issues personally. There was 1 mk5 I bought, that had hinges added. But the guy gave me the heads up before he sold it to me. Usually the only people I buy off are audiophile guys, thats why i find myself with a lot of singles. If your buying in america, theres a guy in Florida who has a great mk5 for sale right now, very trust worthy guy, (technics melancoly). I buy and sell in australia, if your selling, im always buying. Just go to my channel and let me know what you have as I always buy if in very good condition. I only buy mk2, mk3, mk3d, mk5. Which are of course the all analog pitch ones. And they always sell. Actually even in my city, as soon as so eone lists, they go quite fast. Personally, I own 11 right now. All 11 are immaculate. I will never sell my collection, But, i can tell you if the ones your looking at are worth your time. if you want to be sure their all authetic, u do need to know the models inside out. The best models to buy for the most part, are mk5s, not m5g. Mk5. As they are newer than m3d, and mk4s, and likely will be in good condition given the years they were made. Also, always check serial numbers. And make sure that they are correct voltage for where you are.
I see a lot of modified SL's in the US , with a lot of flashy stuff. Now I'm really suspicious for these type of stores. There's at least one here in Holland too, for upgrades and what not, but again....that suspcious feeling. Learned a lot here ! Thanks!

hi, I have technics sl q3 and I think it has a problem of power, some times when the voltage is low it starts turning reverse. I would appreciate for any suggestions or advise.
I have a mk5 since 2007, I changed the arm (because unable to remove the head of the arm with bad contact with cartridge)bought from japan and I changed the rca câble (no ground on the new câble). It work perfectly. What is the frequency to put the special oil in the torq ?
I didn't know they were discontinued. It's a real shame since Audio-Technica seem like a close copy at a fraction of the price. Admittedly and obviously, I'm no expert on record decks! They look right but likely not of the same quality.
I've got some brand new 1200's in the box never opened they have been sitting in my dads bedroom round at his house for probably 10/12 years. I never opened them because i knew they would be worth a few quid some day. Also i fell in love with my cdj's
I've been repairing/servicing Technics decks for decades but these factors never really came up. Although - I serviced a 1200 recently to find that it had a MK3 pitch slider which doesn't have the central lock. Luckily i had the correct one in stock and changed it. I fear that there will be many Chinese copies of these parts in circulation.
This is a dead system, I highly doubt the Chinese clone parts for repairing old Technics. If anything many brands copied their designs and some parts may match because of that, people mix and match Technics parts and use today's industrial manufactured resistors, capacitors, etc which can buy on Mouser for example.
I Scored 2 x 1210MkII (?.. Stored in a road case atm) ) from a mate for some money owed , from a Club that changed ownership. (no . Not stolen, Gifted to him by the original owner) ...., Prob about 6 or so years ago..... Im Not a DJ, But seems, Theyre actually worth more that he owed me ! This gives me some info to confirm.. Though Im sure they are original.....
speaking of digital control pitch, what’s the problem, why can’t technics launch a version that’s true analog for people that take vinyl mixing seriously, is it technically impossible or something?
Nothing wrong with a Frankindeck as long as it was put together correctly. And the customer is aware it’s not an original deck. It’s just like classic cars. Original parts don’t exist so should we not try to fix them and throw them away? No we have to do what we have to do to keep them going.
Sensible point. MK2s are not getting any younger and original parts are hard to find. Good repairs, honestly described are essential to keep these classics on the road.
Also lads iv known I more recent time this happening to stanton st150 1m's I recent time also as iv had frankin stantins before infact here currently in peaces in my room 😆
i believe the mk5 is the last analogue tables from technics and has all the final refinements. digital pitches are awful and my friend that bought the new mk7 complains on several issues with the mk7 especially the dead spots in the digital pitch
Some change parts from one to another because there are no parts available. Some will buy a turntable that is just for parts and just use it for parts. You can’t blame them.
Didn’t think it was a thing or that anyone would be bothered with amount of bastardised Technics out there. However if they are being sold as original then that is a problem, especially at the price they go for. Disagree with the pronunciation, always been ‘nics, ‘neecs is just wrong. Some even spell it Techniques … it’s written the deck ffs.
My 1210 mk5s were purchased brand new over a decade ago. Still even have the original boxes and owners manuals they will be buried with me. Oh and by the way anybody that says it different than you is wrong tech-nics for life
Its pathetic the pricing for them these days. owned two sets, yes lovely to use and built like tanks, but i think some people have it in their heads that they will make them magically better, or they sound better. simply not true. i put my last pair up for £550 (could've asked for more but not the sort of person to extort others) in 2020 and the swarm of people messaging me who clearly were just going to flog them on for more was insane. They arent worth what people are asking for them IMO. You can quite happily buy plenty of the other options available today and comfortably go into a club with technics. if you can mix on vinyl you arent going to find yourself in a situation where you're screwed on the night because you arent used to technics. i've opted for vestax pdx-2000's this time around and there was no issue going from knowing only technics to using them. piece of piss!!!
Honestly, these days I'd be okay with a Frankentechnics, as long as it works well, the seller is honest about it and the price is okay. It's always good to get a few hints on what to look for, of course, so thanks for this video, it will certainly help quite a few people.

@@Mojaxx yours look the nuts ! And yes you are right, especially to first time buyers who have never owned a pair, they need to be extra vigilant. Jays check list should be of great help.
awesome video , thank god i haven't had any problems with my set of mk5's , i bought mine new in box sealed years ago and i absolutely adore them .
those board interconnects are not just twisted on, they are wire-wrapped with a special tool. wire wrapping makes a very high quality connection as good or better than soldering, and was used for prototyping and limited production for computers and electronics up until through-hole gave way to surface-mount construction.
Really interesting vid and thanks for the heads up! One thing I will say, with the rising costs for Technics in the used market, why would you not just pay the extra and get a pair of new MK7s so that you completely eliminate the risk of these Frankendecks?
"Frankendecks" love it! 👍🏻
Because mk7’s are overpriced trash
@@adriannavarro2536 strong disagree. Yes they are more expensive, but they are an excellent update on the conventional SL model.

I concur! Jay made my very old dirty, dusty mk2s working and looking brand new. He did an awesome job!
I kept buying used MK3Ds online and they kept showing up damaged or not working right. Maybe the shipping or even just a lie about the condition of the tables. I eventually sold them all off for parts. After eating my losses and recuperating my money, I bought MK7s I've heard many people say they aren't great but I have nothing bad at all to say about them. Mate, you need to do an up to date 'Buyers Guide' video. For both online and in person.
Cool story bro.
literally just blew my mind with the actual pronunciation, bet no one in england ever has called em techneecs :D
Don’t worry, I’ve said Tech nicks my entire life as well, and I just recently started working for a DJ gear shop and it is so hard to train myself to pronounce it differently! At least it’s not another Berenstein/Berenstain bears situation though, my brain wouldn’t be able to handle that

U got the “too old” part right! Cheers
Any of the decks based on the Hanpin Super OEM platform are very good and will serve you well. Check my review of the RP7000mk2 for more info on that.

This is excellent. Thanks, Mojaxx and Jay.
I (TV engineer) couldn't understand why everything should be original. I cut off the original (super cheap) RCA plugs on my SL-1210 MK2 back in 1994 because the middle contact got stuck in a "high-end" RCA socket.

With the release of the MK7, are pre-2010 1200s still crazy expensive?

Hi Guys, One quite Major point of Concern. "J " was saying about the "Skate " Cap not having the Correct Numbers on. I think he said it should go up to 6 ? But it actually only went up to 3. The Scale / Calibration of how much Skate is applied in alignment with Counterbalance / Stylus Weight Setting would be out of Wack and would therefore be Detrimental to Stylus Ware and / or your Precious Vinyl Collection.
Regards Andy
The Mk5s do indeed have a scale on that cap which goes up to 6, so whilst you absolutely have a point, you should probably take it up with Technics. ;)
Fuckin brilliant! Jay is a Legend, done my Decks :)
Thank you!!!
your going to be even busier now jay 😀
damn. i never knew
I have 2 M5g's with about an hours use on them both sat in original boxes with every single piece of original equipment, shells, shure cartridges, paperwork, everything! Seems bad to have them boxed up doing nothing but I don't know if I could let them go..
Hit me up if you ever consider getting rid of them.
Even the new 1200s are becoming harder to get now - Technics is having supply chain issues, especially in north america.
I bought 2 MK3 from Japan. Both are in excellent condition. A 40 dollar step down voltage box and I was in business. Seriously considering a 1200g for my home system.
Hey what step down box did you buy ?
Thanks
I have a pair of 1992 MK2s. Wish you were in the states!
I had to open mine because I spilled milk in it. Glad I did cuz I’m more experienced as a DJ
Good man Jay, nice one.
what numbers should be on the 1200G anti skate control knob?

I didn't know they were discontinued. It's a real shame since Audio-Technica seem like a close copy at a fraction of the price. Admittedly and obviously, I'm no expert on record decks! They look right but likely not of the same quality.
I have a question.. the technics DZ1200 and the technics turntable ( any model) parts be interchanged)

So if you can't get tech 12s, what is the next best thing to buy new?
I Scored 2 x 1210MkII (?.. Stored in a road case atm) ) from a mate for some money owed , from a Club that changed ownership. (no . Not stolen, Gifted to him by the original owner) ...., Prob about 6 or so years ago.....
Im Not a DJ, But seems, Theyre actually worth more that he owed me !
This gives me some info to confirm.. Though Im sure they are original.....
This is where the mk7 get its chance : still a genuine and a matching parts unit.
speaking of digital control pitch, what’s the problem, why can’t technics launch a version that’s true analog for people that take vinyl mixing seriously, is it technically impossible or something?
How much are MK2 actually worth? I have a pair, which work well but don't have the cover or head units
i believe the mk5 is the last analogue tables from technics and has all the final refinements. digital pitches are awful and my friend that bought the new mk7 complains on several issues with the mk7 especially the dead spots in the digital pitch
Some change parts from one to another because there are no parts available. Some will buy a turntable that is just for parts and just use it for parts. You can’t blame them.
UK buyers only....?
You can still buy a brand new Technics SL 1210 MK 2 from Amazon U.S.A. for about $2700.
Didn’t think it was a thing or that anyone would be bothered with amount of bastardised Technics out there. However if they are being sold as original then that is a problem, especially at the price they go for.
