I've had three of these boards and I will say that Noel nails the characteristics to a tee. Spot on, with regards to flow, responsiveness, twin fin vs trailer, etc etc. The Cali twin would have to be one of the best boards I have ever ridden in 1 to 3 foot surf, all conditions. Such a versatile all round small wave board. Cheers Noel.
I’m 5’11 & 75kg. I just purchased this board in a 5’7 30L for surfing this summer here on the east coast of Australia 🇦🇺 I rode it for the first time yesterday in 1-2ft and it was MAGIC. It generates speed and power from literally nothing & and really digs and holds carves. The most fun I’ve had in a while! So excited to surf it all summer.

I have a similar board, after 15 years, still my fave with the trailer. Does not go well without the trailer. Equally good backside. Getting another one made soon. Great review.
Hi Noel, I love my CA TWIN! I'm a beginner/Intermediate and this is the first board I've really clicked with. I love getting it on rail and the speed is just addicting. It has such an exhilarating combo of speed and stability. Coming from a skateboarding background, perhaps because I'm more of a front footed surfer it's easier for me to turn.
What's the main difference between this board and RNF96? especially regarding paddling and wave size, looks like they both have the same volume/length and the same outline except for the wing.
Hi Noel So similar but different which is the better board RNF96 or Cali Twin love to know your thoughts. Please please keep these coming absolutely love em. Want your some of your fins but shipping to a obscure town on the mid north coast of NSW Australia is crazy😢.

Noel gettin spicy in this review! Tellin folks to quit comparing the wrong shit haha...Good review. Already ordered one in carbon wrap in the 2+1 futures. Thanks for the fin recommendation Noel
I have a similar shaped board by another shaper and for the intermediate surfer in typical so cal slop conditions I think this MR outline and twin plus trailer is the best type of board. Mine is pure magic. Lots of glide, forgiving, paddle-ability, but can still go vertical. And with a trailer there is minimal adjustment going back to your standard shortboard thruster when the waves pick up.
Both boards are amazing… the CA Twin might carry a little more down the line speed with a Twin + Trailer. However the 96 is my choice as a Pure Twin Fin for small wave shredding out of these two boards.
Bought one in Libtech construction for a travel board, and I think it’s a true one-board quiver. I’ve ridden it from 3-8ft surf, and it seems to work well in everything with the MR 2+1. I had the RNF 96, and actually prefer the Cali Twin Pin. I’d like to get your take on it.
I have a question about fin choices for this board. I just got one used for like $350. It’s rad! I have the fcs 2 MR twin+trailer in it atm. For me it’s super pivoty and I’d like to give it more drive and stability with different fins (so less pocket surfing/performance). What would be some good options? I surf typical SoCal beach breaks (HB, Porto, Newport, Santa Monica, etc).
Hey Noel. love your show, Aarron unreal videoing, its epic! Which do you recommend out of MR Cali Twin in PU or SharpeEye Modern 2 Fusion E2 as a twin + trailer set up. What stopped up making the Modern 2 from being a favourite even though you seemed stoked on the board?
I prefer the CA Twin... it’s faster and offers a little more performance compared to the Mod2. The Modern 2 is super fun but I felt like I want a little more flare in the design.
Wondering how the Cali twin pin compares to the hypto krypto ridden as a 2+1. They look a very similar outline, rocker; volume etc. Did you prefer one over the other? Trying to decide which one to get to mix things up & try something different. Can get a hk in my size for a steal if I decide to go for it
Im 6ft, 170lbs, just got a MR cali twin at 5’7”x20.25”x2.4” 30L lghtspd construction w/ MR twin + trailer. First session it went well in knee to chest high(reef pointbreak). Second session it struggled in knee high side chop. But on a decent thigh high wave it flys and has a snappy pivoty feel. I think i could have gone up a liter or two as well because its loose due to the curvy tail rocker. I need to test it in 4 ft surf which i believe it will work best in 2-4ft surf. Or in 1-3ft punchy waves.
Tried it with no trailer and it was more faster out of bottom turns and it really liked the looseness of the pure twin in 1-1.5ft surf. Thinking about it now, if i could keep the length but go down in liters(1-2), while it may hinder paddling a bit, it would be a even more maneuverable. Definitely getting a better experience the more i ride it.
Hey Noel what size would you recommend for a 46 year old 185lbs. Latest board retro ripper 6.1 19.5 2.56 33-34 liter. Felt up the 5.9 @ 33.5l and felt good. But liters is not everything so do you think that if say sweet Spot for me is between 33.5-35 liter depending on plan-shape do you think I should get the 5.10 being 35l or 5.9 @ 33.5 Looking to use it in 1-4 feet daily driver/groveler. Again thanks for a great show!

Great review do you think this board would be a good one to up size ? I am an older bloke and use a boards a little big to make life easy, at 65kg I use approx 28 litre boards. Some boards are pigs when using too much volume .
PS: you looked like you had the Mark Richards flow. Twins are their own thing just like singles and good for the soul. Keep up the stoke and great reviews!
Awesome review Noel, you're a legend. I've been thinking a lot about buying this board and not sure if I should go for 5'6" 28.5L or 5'7" 30L. I'm 6'0, 152lbs 28 years old (16 years surfing) and have been riding this shortboards for last 2 years(Monstabox 5'10" 28.5 L, Channel Island Happy 5.11'' 27.58L). I want the MR Cali Twin with a bit more volume than what I usually ride, to give me that extra paddling power and be able to catch smaller waves and compete in crowded pointbreaks. My goal is still improve my technique and be able to generate lots of speed, a forgiving and soft surfing that gives me that cruisy and curvy turns, but also when waves are a bit more powerful I can surf it rail to rail without feeling that stiffness from high volume boards... Do you think I should go with more volume than usual (30L) or keep same volume (28.5L)? Thanks much!
Alberto Arias The 5’7” at 30 liters might be a bit much unless your used to shredding more foam on you Grovelers. The CA Twin is fast and loose and paddles great. I like my boards a bit more boards more sensitive so I would go 28.5 but if you want the extra float and cruise a bit go 30 liters.
Daniel T The T2 is the closest on the Futures website. Sorry if it not there.... I really like the Futures T1 or the Akila Aipa Twins.... but you will need to purchase a trailer to pair with Akila’s. They are sold as a Twin Fin set only
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thank you! I really like the way the Akila looks I'll take stab at them and get a trailer I think. I think I wanna try on my rad ripper and retro ripper I have heard the retro with twin + trailer is awesome as well. Did you ever tried the radR with twin + trailer
Watching some of your past reviews, a couple times you mention that your go to fin size for small waves is large, especially on HPSBs - is this to give you increased drive / speed? Do you go with more or less flexible fins when going large in small waves?
ewillens Yes I like a Large fin in smaller waves to increase drive and speed. I choose a Large fin in my Grovelers too.... and yes I like a fin with a little more flex to increase projection or pop in my turns when the waves are weak. Stiff fins work best in bigger or more powerful surf, and fins with a bit of flex are better in smaller surf.
@@surfnshowreviews7777He can surf large because he uses Very low liters board/very maneuverable already. Same size guy with less skillful surfer with bigger board would need medium fin.
Hi Noel , first of all Congrats for the excellent reviews, Great Show and Great Surfing ! I´m 5´9 74 Kg 42 years been Surfing, been surfing for 15 years, have been the last 4 years without surfing, 4 knee cirurgies and i have back cirurgie im 2010, back to surfing last summer i have pain but the things are more controled now and im able to surf, i do mainly cutbacks, roundhouses, ocasional top turns, before all these i use 27 liters boards, i have to sold them all, by now i have a JS BlackBox 3 ( 5´9 ) in 29 liters but i still struggle a litle to paddle , i want this board badly, want a twin that stil performs , just want to size it right without losing performance but the padle ability due to my problems is very importante, shoul i go 5´7 in 30 liters or 5´8 32 liters or should i go custom ? Any sugestions ? Thanks in advance
Carlos Rodrigues I say go 5’8” and get your paddle strength back. Once you got that then start heading down on liters. I think ideal liters for you is 29-30 but right now go 31-32.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 thanks Noel for advice, im afraid losing too much performance and the board is a litle wide , usually never go with 20 plus width . How do you compare this board with Ci Fishbeard my second option ? I think stock 5'9 will be spot on for me, but is the lenght on this kind of board that worries me and the limited option on the Merrick keels only option to Ride it as a pure Twin, not sure it will work for me , always love the MR + trailer option . Thanks again
Carlos Rodrigues CA Twin is a Twin + Trailer so it will Pivot Better. The FB is a legitimate Performance Twin Fin with no trailer option. Both boards are epic.... if you want a true Twin Fin then go FB, if your want a little more pivot then go MR CA Twin. Pretty simple... don’t make it difficult by trying to compare two completely different boards. A Twin + Trailer is not a true Twin Fin in my book. The Trailer is like riding a bike with training wheels... super fun but with the extra speed and hold... it also has a bit of drag too.
Hi Noel! I always learn something helpful on these reviews and really just enjoy watching you break down the relevant aspects of each one. I hope this is a fair comparison to make in your eyes...I surf mostly twinies and want something with a little extra performance in 1-4 foot surf and have been stuck between the ultra joe and MR california twin (considering both in the 2+1 setup). Any suggestion as to which one would allow for more performance oriented surfing? Thanks again!
Noel so psyched going to put in the order tomorrow! I’m hoping for one last piece of advice. 5’6” is the right length for me but just a tad under volume stock. Would you recommend ordering custom just slightly thicker in PU or keep stock dims and go for something like the carbon wrap or C4 construction? I’ll mostly be surfing it at Cardiff reef and Swamis.
It's nice to see the process you do over time with the reviews. In the beginning, you were a short guy, and over time, your style seems to open to new design that you used to love less in the past..
Fantastic Review as always. This MR twin and the Akila's contemporary fish (you reviewed a while ago) both look super spicy under your feet. And both seem targeting similar wave ranges and conditions. Do you have any thoughts on the technical differences and preferable conditions of these two models?
Koichi Hashikawa The MR can handle more size and a little easier to surf. Both are fast though!! The Akila Aipa Winged Twin we’re dropping in two days is next level.
Ca twin vs puddle jumper hp? From the videos it seems that the ca twin is way faster but still veery maneuverable. What's your suggestion for average and not steep waves?
I’ve had a couple heavy ones come through for review and I gave them back and ordered new ones. I like my Lost PU/Poly’s with Proformance glass to keep them light and high performance.
Always spectacular reviews, I notice between a number of reviews how much you love the Al Merrick keels, and seem to struggle finding a similar set up for FCS, have you tried the Rob Machado keels? They’re fin specs are not outrageously different but haven’t had a chance to hold them up side by side or surf each for comparison to say for sure. Wondering whether you’ve surfed the RMs and how you thought they went?
Thanks Noel, I was waiting for your review on this board! Do you think this board would suit a beginner (catching waves but still not turning well) transitioning to intermediate level surfer? Thank you ande enjoy your Holidays!
Noel, you had mentioned that you don't like it when a board goes flat on the wave face through turns. You said it's better when the rail holds and the board is on angle through the turn. Watching this video it seemed the board was going flat on the top turns. Am I seeing that right? Did you feel that way on the board?
Matt Clem The board felt good on rail... and I could hold it on rail through turns. Other boards that go flat start on rail and then go flat when I don’t want it too. If your seeing the board go flat.... then your seeing something I’m not. CA Twin felt solid with Twin Plus Trailer.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Ok thanks. When I first heard your comment about turns and the rail angle it became something I always watched for in your videos. I always look for boards with good drive and smooth performance rail work through turns. Maybe I'm mistaking the "twin fin top turn release aesthetic" with going flat. In a stab in the dark video Mick Fanning said he looks for a board that has good drive, and that he can lean on rail quickly and easily. Matt biolos said that the right board is one that allows you to make speed easily and allows you to do the turns you want to do. I suppose finding the right balance of speed and control depends on your ability and the wave type. Always learning so much from your show. It has been a huge help in putting the puzzle together. Thank you. One thing I keep thinking about. You say that you don't add liters on your grovelers because board design compensates for the smaller wave size. Many people tend to add liters on their grovelers, myself included. Do you think this could be because you always surf the same spot and the waves basically break the same way, with the same shape, just smaller? If you had a wave that didn't break down the line with good shape I would think you would want more volume. What do you think?
Matt Clem I never want to add foam if a board paddles good and has good glide. I like my boards quick and responsive... if I were surfing a beach break my Grovelers would go good there too.... still the same glide and paddle but a beach break will often have more punch or power and I still want to get into the lip quick. Adding foam to a Groveler makes them turn slow, disrupts flow, and have less performance.
Jon Kennard Twin Plus trailer = CA Twin, Straight Twin Fin = Black Baron. Our next review is the Akila Aipa Winged Twin and it rivals the CA Twin with a Trailer and the Black Baron as a Twin Fin.

Miso offers more rail engagement and surfs better in bigger waves…. It’s more of a daily driver. The CA Twin is a better Groveler and it’s faster down the line with less effort.
Awesome review and awesome surfing! Been eyeing this board for a few months, think I'm going to have to pic one up. Just out of curiosity, Have you tried this board as a thruster yet? Maybe something with a slightly smaller center fin? Don't get me wrong, MR twin+trailer is one of my fav. fins, but just wondering how this board would go with a more conventional 3 fin set.

Your backhand attack sells it for me. Backhand can be difficult to master on twins, quads, twinzers. You look really confident on those lefts. Also Im 5'8" and usually abt 195lbs not fat at all. I'll still try to surf with a mix of Richard Kenvin carve and more modern competitive style. I've been riding between 5'10 and 6'0. I feel like I need something that wont radius out of the pocket on typical sd waves. Something like this MR collab looks good here....but I'm afraid because of my weight to drop down to the lengths you're riding.

Akila Aipa Twins with my Stabilizer. Here is a link to my Stabilizer.

Ha! I rode my Lost RV with MR fins & a nubster a few times when the board came out. I must have really wanted this board - 2 big thumbs up!!
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks so much for your reply, makes total sense, will go with 5'6''' then. Cheers!
How does 2+1 compare to straight thruster set-up? (I've ridden thruster/quad*/twin but never 2+1) thanks! *Favourite.
Family Fun Twin Fin speed and a bit more drive compared to Thruster.... the Trailer offers pivot and traction
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks Noel. Love your work. Big up from Wales 🤙
Hi Noel this board or the RNF96?
@@ryantherock7664 Pisces or 96 by a mile. I suggest the new Lost Pisces.

G,Day Noel what would be your preference between the Cali twin and the Rocket Wide, great reviews cheers
Sandy Taylor RW offers more performance in the pocket... CA Twin paddles better and it’s faster. CA Twin will grovels better too
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks mate being an older bloke the CA sounds like the go, really enjoy watching your reviews Cheers
had the same question, thanks !
Thanks Noel, your surfing style is dope!
Cheers
I cant find the future fin you are mentioning on futures web page could you help me out or recommend another template thats close to the MR in future.
Great review Noel!..You surfed that board great!
Carlos Rodrigues The FB is a pure Twin Fin and you can use other twin fin sets like the EN’s etc...
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Hey Noel the 1 millions dolars question :) wich one do you choose ? I surf mainly point breaks , Lost MR or Ci Fishbeard ?
Steven Ellis Both boards are epic... I suggest the Lost/MR CA Twin. It’s truly designed for that set up and it will go better for you.
Thanks for the advice Noel! I really appreciate the work your doing, look forward seeing more content!
Steven Ellis Go stock in CW or C4
Thanks Noel, you’re the man. You are the best in the board review game, you rip and you have the voice of the super smooth DJ legend Casey Kasem.
Great one, Tnx. Have you tried standard thruster fin set?
Oshri Sudri Nope... I am addicted to speed so I stayed with Twin Fin and Twin + Trailer
Hey Noel. Love your work and bought some good boards based on recommendations!
Have you surfed the Lost MR Cali Twin Pin yet? Thoughts?
Yes… it’s got good hold and drive. Good for hollow Beachies or waves with a bit more power. I prefer the MR/Cali Twin Swallow tail for So Cal waves.
Great thanks !!
Do lost polys feel heavy to you ?
I’ve had a couple heavy ones come through for review and I gave them back and ordered new ones. I like my Lost PU/Poly’s with Proformance glass to keep them light and high performance.
thats a good question !
Nick Hewett I have not tried them yet. Maybe I will get the chance soon.
Thanks Noel, I was waiting for your review on this board!
Do you think this board would suit a beginner (catching waves but still not turning well) transitioning to intermediate level surfer?
Thank you ande enjoy your Holidays!
livemoksha Yes.. just make it easy on yourself and get it wide and with good volume for flotation and easy wave catching
Which would be better for mushy 2-5ft Florida surf, Uber XL or MR Cali Twin?
MR will grovel better
Noel which twin fin is your no 1 out of those you've now ridden? Thanks Jon
Jon Kennard Twin Plus trailer = CA Twin, Straight Twin Fin = Black Baron. Our next review is the Akila Aipa Winged Twin and it rivals the CA Twin with a Trailer and the Black Baron as a Twin Fin.

Where could i find this in PU in USA? I have been looking up for a month now.
I’m 75kg 5.10 riding a xanadu piglet 29.4 litres wanting a cali twin light speed. What size would you recommend please?
Hey mate, another rad vid. If you were choosing a board for smaller beachies or points, would you pick this or a puddle jumper or a machado seaside? I'm looking for a fun board that covers most if not all bases
Hi Noel I took your recommendation for booties and went to go look for Xcel dry locks. My daughter Doesn’t like booties because she can never find your size and I never thought of dry locks.I went to my local surf shop and didn’t find any in half sizes. And I also went online and looked everywhere looking for half size because She would be a 5 1/2.
How are you able to access half sizes I can’t find them anywhere? Thanks for the video and hope to hear from you
Hi Noel. How does this compare to the CI twin fin?
This id love to hear a comparison to the rusty miso
Miso offers more rail engagement and surfs better in bigger waves…. It’s more of a daily driver.
The CA Twin is a better Groveler and it’s faster down the line with less effort.
what would be the equivalent MR fins for a future set up?
Jack Luquer Futures T2 with the TT1 Trailer.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 thanks
I really like this format for the review. You should include it in future reviews. If I were buying a new board, this is what I would buy.
Matthew Orrison Sick.. thanks we will try to incorporate more of this style
What’s difference between lost rnf 96 and mr twin?
@@julzylil 96 is a 1 board quiver… it shreds everything from 1-8’ surf. The MR Twin is more of a Groveler to head high surf.

Just out of curiosity, Have you tried this board as a thruster yet? Maybe something with a slightly smaller center fin? Don't get me wrong, MR twin+trailer is one of my fav. fins, but just wondering how this board would go with a more conventional 3 fin set.
Royce F I did NOT try it as a Thruster... give it a go and let us all know how it goes.

Antoine Meignan Range... 1-5’. Happy New Year
loving these reviews and incredible surfing. After all the boards you have ridden what 3 boards (groveler, daily driver, and performance shortboard) are you taking with you if you had to travel the world with those 3 boards only for a year.
smac22 Tough one... Akila Aipa Winged Twin, (Review drops next Monday) NB2, Ghost.
6’1 180lb what size would you say ?
Pro/Expert 29-31L
Advanced 31-33L
Intermediate 34-36L
is there a fin you recommend on this board as a thruster?
Not sure... it’s meant to be ridden as a Twin + Trailer. Maybe go Large Merrick sides and small pivot center fin
Looks great on those easy to surf waves you guys get there good to know how it goes in those step more powerful little 2 to 5 foot beaches in Western Australia 👍🏽

Hi, a just saw this! (im a intermediate/ beginner surfer( great review! i wanted to buy my first surfboard ( a fish as i find them the mist fitting to me) im about 162cm and 58kg . i wasn't sure how tall the board should be in comparison to my height for a fish board. if i wanted to by the LostXMR board, which height would you suggest i go for? thanks!
Really depends on the volume for you… I say roughly 28-30L.
ha, so, after watching 45 reviews, every board surfs great... lol... Now - I should test each board with you --
Your backhand attack sells it for me.
