I feel you completely on the weak low notes, it's so disheartening but as Sam said own what you got. Sopranos have an amazing high range and there is no shame in not singing low notes it is our body that decides our area. I had another comment and I forget lol

Sam, IDK if I've said this before but I've been singing since I was a child and have sung professionally in adulthood. My last voice coach is the recommended coach of John Kander and the late Fred Ebb (who wrote Chicago, Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Woman, etc.) and is also the musical director of Broadway Under the Stars and The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular. And yet, I've learned more technical skills about the physiodynamics of my own voice from watching your channel than I ever did from paying $$$$$$$ for lessons from the guy who literally coached Kristin and Idina, Patti Lupone, Liza Minnelli, Sutton Foster, Carol Channing, and countless other legends of the stage. I mean that as no shade to him but as total respect and regard for you. Thank you so much for everything you offer us. I don't think people fully realize how valuable your channel is.
I don't sing. I cannot help myself, I continuously binge watch your videos and I find this one immensely entertaining and so fascinating to watch!! Please keep making these tutorials with actual singers!! I love seeing their minds get blown with how to improve their craft. You are very very good at what you do. Side note, even though I'm not technically a singer, I can say that my car "singing" abilities have vastly improved just by watching your videos
I'm a soprano and want to so badly hit those rich, deep tones. We always want what we don't have, but just know your voice is absolutely beautiful as well!
This video is my new favorite. First, Addie, you were amazing and brave to take risks with brand new exercises done at difficult pitches and then let us watch that. That takes a lot of courage and I am so grateful! You are also an amazing singer and it's encouraging as someone who struggles with confidence and especially stamina to see that there are adjustments you find helpful and things that happen due to nerves even at such an amazing level of vocal stamina as you have. Honestly while your voice is killer in a lot of ways (I was literally exclaiming at my TV when you were doing those whistle tone exercises, so cool) it's that you can do 3-4 hour sets and then do it again in a couple days that I especially admire. Sam is really good at teaching. Sam, if you can find more brave souls for live master class style lessons, this is so fun to watch and I love it and I hope you do it again. Also I feel like you've also got some real psychological wisdom available to you. I am curious if you picked up psych therapy skills because it's part of voice because our instrument is so personal and subconscious, or if you deliberately studied psych to improve your ability to teach, or if you have just "been through some shit," but a lot of what you say that's more general about letting go of regret, and thanking old coping mechanisms for getting us to where we are, etc are good mental health habits. I teach dog training, and a lot of the struggles people have with family pets are really about communication, boundary-setting, and relationships. So I appreciate the way you address the psychology of performance and specifically of singing. Very cool.

Wow, that was so pleasant to watch. Really educational. And man, the way you teach is phenomenal. You can be a vocal mechanics nerd without actually singing. But...if you are really interested, why NOT try out your own pipes😁 You could find it fun to explore your instrument

You honestly don't even need to sound good--just be able to get not-bad enough not to annoy yourself more than you enjoy it. That's not out of reach of anybody, barring severe physical disability. Within our modern culture we have been programmed with a lot of utter BS about natural talent. Most artistic "ability" is really a practiced skill. There are certainly geniuses and prodigies in various artistic areas, like in any other human area. But it doesn't mean that if you love basketball and you aren't Michael Jordan you should avoid playing basketball. Even Michael Jordan or Pavarotti or whoever practices and develops their skill in their field or they don't get anywhere. Most of excellence is simply hard work and perseverance. The idea of inborn talent not only makes art into an unnecessarily elitist field, it devalues all the incredible time an effort people put into their art. I am not at all saying that if you truly don't like to sing you should sing. But most people who are fascinated with singing choose not to sing because they don't feel worthy. What I am saying is that pretty much anybody can learn to sound really good eventually, so if you really like to sing or might, and what is stopping you is that you don't like how it sounds, it's relatively straightforward to learn to make sounds you like better and hurts nothing to try it. Not having a beautiful voice with no practice or training is more of a prop to excuse our fear and self-consciousness than a good reason not to sing if it's something you would like to do. It's totally ok if it's not your thing, but I have met so many people who just are waiting for permission or a little encouragement to sing. It's just a skill. Also, being a decent singer in a world with many good singers just means more music in the world. A good or even mediocre singer takes nothing from the good ones. It's almost like saying you don't want to learn yoga because there are already yoga masters in the world. I am down if you don't want to learn because you just don't like yoga. But you can certainly benefit from yoga without becoming a yoga pro. And it's good for you! And singing is actually something humans are sort of built to enjoy. The whole phenomenon of recorded music and autotuned perfect pitch is a teeny short amount of time, while humans have been singing together imperfectly in gatherings, groups, and homes for thousands of years. (We develop in the womb surrounded by the drumbeat of our mother's heart.) Singing vibrations feel good, connect us to our bodies and our bodies to the resonant spaces we occupy. Singing teaches us to breathe more deeply and strongly. It often improves our oxygen intake and can increase alertness. Singing in a group improves our social connectedness and empathy and social listening. It builds community. And you can get all the benefit with little to no actual skill. So if you want to sing but don't because you think you aren't talented enough, I want to offer you an invitation...permission...and encouragement to try out this amazing wonderful thing that you might really enjoy and benefit from. If you don't like it or just don't have the courage yet, you are also welcome in the community as an appreciator. But the invitation to participate is OPEN. You can be amazing, but there's always more to learn, and a bit more to improve on. And people like Sam have that weird ability to pick up on small flaws on nearly-perfect things. wanted to ask this, but you beat me to it. Hope they did. I think they were looking into retaining an attorney, but don't know what happened to it. Really hope they were able to get royalties on it.
We did get legal representation and unfortunately it wasn't a safe financial move for us. Its really a shame that they're just getting away with things like this, but hopefully we can continue to raise awareness that this is an ongoing issue. Other artists have reached out and told us the same thing has happened to them. Really unfortunate.

29:25 - Wow, that was a great sound. This girl is really talented. She did seem a bit shy/retained, but understandably so. It still took guts for her to put herself out there while learning and practicing with you. I have a feeling this actually did help her and that she rewatched it and further used the tips you gave to practice on her own and improve. You also did a great job encouraging her and you can really tell in this one that you both know and love your craft. Oh, and if I may make a suggestion, it might be a good idea when teaching people who haven't had any lessons like this before to go a little slower, or just make some jokes every now and then so they would have an easier time following you. For some reason, it seemed to me that Addie was trying to catch up to the avalance of information you were throwing her way (almost like she was actually taking notes in her mind). Only she can confirm or infirm that and I do believe that this also differs from person to person (how comfortable they are with your pace), but it might at least be something to consider. Thank you both for doing this, it was awesome to watch even for someone that's not really interested in performing any type of music. It really is some of the best content I have seen on the Tube and this should be continued for sure. You really learn and understand a lot more when your advice is actually interactive (with a student).

You honestly don't even need to sound good--just be able to get not-bad enough not to annoy yourself more than you enjoy it. That's not out of reach of anybody, barring severe physical disability. Within our modern culture we have been programmed with a lot of utter BS about natural talent. Most artistic "ability" is really a practiced skill. There are certainly geniuses and prodigies in various artistic areas, like in any other human area. But it doesn't mean that if you love basketball and you aren't Michael Jordan you should avoid playing basketball. Even Michael Jordan or Pavarotti or whoever practices and develops their skill in their field or they don't get anywhere. Most of excellence is simply hard work and perseverance. The idea of inborn talent not only makes art into an unnecessarily elitist field, it devalues all the incredible time an effort people put into their art.
I am not at all saying that if you truly don't like to sing you should sing. But most people who are fascinated with singing choose not to sing because they don't feel worthy. What I am saying is that pretty much anybody can learn to sound really good eventually, so if you really like to sing or might, and what is stopping you is that you don't like how it sounds, it's relatively straightforward to learn to make sounds you like better and hurts nothing to try it. Not having a beautiful voice with no practice or training is more of a prop to excuse our fear and self-consciousness than a good reason not to sing if it's something you would like to do. It's totally ok if it's not your thing, but I have met so many people who just are waiting for permission or a little encouragement to sing. It's just a skill. Also, being a decent singer in a world with many good singers just means more music in the world. A good or even mediocre singer takes nothing from the good ones. It's almost like saying you don't want to learn yoga because there are already yoga masters in the world. I am down if you don't want to learn because you just don't like yoga. But you can certainly benefit from yoga without becoming a yoga pro. And it's good for you!
And singing is actually something humans are sort of built to enjoy. The whole phenomenon of recorded music and autotuned perfect pitch is a teeny short amount of time, while humans have been singing together imperfectly in gatherings, groups, and homes for thousands of years. (We develop in the womb surrounded by the drumbeat of our mother's heart.) Singing vibrations feel good, connect us to our bodies and our bodies to the resonant spaces we occupy. Singing teaches us to breathe more deeply and strongly. It often improves our oxygen intake and can increase alertness. Singing in a group improves our social connectedness and empathy and social listening. It builds community. And you can get all the benefit with little to no actual skill.
So if you want to sing but don't because you think you aren't talented enough, I want to offer you an invitation...permission...and encouragement to try out this amazing wonderful thing that you might really enjoy and benefit from. If you don't like it or just don't have the courage yet, you are also welcome in the community as an appreciator. But the invitation to participate is OPEN. Sam's Discord is FULL of us...no Simon Cowell nonsense here!

Haha, this is why I love voice teachers. You can be amazing, but there's always more to learn, and a bit more to improve on. And people like Sam have that weird ability to pick up on small flaws on nearly-perfect things. That's why I think that the more professional a singer you are, the more important it is to stick with singing lessons. Amazing.
Yeah, its mind-boggling how a voice teacher like Sam just listens to the live-rendition, looks at it and immediately can think of a way to make it even better. Its almost like sorcery.

Awesome video showing how small things affect singing in a mental way. The confidence Addie gained just by relaxing jaw tension was amazing to watch. It seems Addie doesn't realize the great talent she has: great tone, perfect pitch, tremendous range and emotion inclusion and a wonderful personality to boot! wanted to ask this, but you beat me to it. Hope they did. I think they were looking into retaining an attorney, but don't know what happened to it. Really hope they were able to get royalties on it.
We did get legal representation and unfortunately it wasn't a safe financial move for us. Its really a shame that they're just getting away with things like this, but hopefully we can continue to raise awareness that this is an ongoing issue. Other artists have reached out and told us the same thing has happened to them. Really unfortunate.

Love this! I’m a new voice teacher. I’m doing lots of reading and teaching, of course, but the most useful exercise has been watching great teachers teach. This is fantastic. More of this please! BTW, I just found you on John Henny’s podcast. Thanks for all these videos!
29:25 - Wow, that was a great sound. This girl is really talented. She did seem a bit shy/retained, but understandably so. It still took guts for her to put herself out there while learning and practicing with you. I have a feeling this actually did help her and that she rewatched it and further used the tips you gave to practice on her own and improve.
You also did a great job encouraging her and you can really tell in this one that you both know and love your craft.
Oh, and if I may make a suggestion, it might be a good idea when teaching people who haven't had any lessons like this before to go a little slower, or just make some jokes every now and then so they would have an easier time following you. For some reason, it seemed to me that Addie was trying to catch up to the avalance of information you were throwing her way (almost like she was actually taking notes in her mind).
Only she can confirm or infirm that and I do believe that this also differs from person to person (how comfortable they are with your pace), but it might at least be something to consider.
Thank you both for doing this, it was awesome to watch even for someone that's not really interested in performing any type of music. It really is some of the best content I have seen on the Tube and this should be continued for sure. You really learn and understand a lot more when your advice is actually interactive (with a student).
I can't express how much I adore and respect your teaching style. We need more teachers like you in this world. Please do consider doing this on a regular basis, since this was incredibly helpful and interesting to watch. Immensely thankful that you're sharing this with us. You do you my dude.
