Listening to Hamilton for the umpteenth time but this time with headphones on and have been focusing on the bass. Well played indeed! Impressive swapping 4 instruments for that many songs. Makes me want to dust mine off and have "what if" fantasies. The bass is such a big part of this musical. Had to see it with me own eyes, now back to listening.
Hi Ian, my wife and I saw Hamilton in London yesterday and we loved it. I really enjoy playing along at home, great bass lines, what I would give to have that score!
This is amazing! Thank you so much for this lovely in the pit view. It’s always so easy to forget all the hard work and non-visible actors that make the magic happen. I worked on set as a child choir on Carmen in the San Fransisco Opera house and this reminds of the beauty that is behind the stage (in this case below haha)
Hi Luke, thanks! That's a good question, and quite a hard one to answer! Maybe something like 'Say No To This' which has a great groove to it, I enjoy playing that one. Chers, Ian
This is super neat! I’m super into theatre, but I’m not exactly the person who wants to be out on stage. I play saxophone and clarinet (not guitar, though I’ve always wanted to learn), and being in the pit for a broadway show is one of my ultimate goals.
Would LOVE to see a rigrundown style video of you going through all your gear on the show - which in-ears do you prefer, what's your pedalboard setup, etc.!
@@iankingbass versatility between instruments, all the melodic changes and phrasing, fingers, plectrum, bow..you got it all going! Obviously you've studied intensely and I hope once the craziness of the past 13-14 months is behind us, you can get right back at it!
Wow. I rarely hear it during the musical but I play the double bass, so it's really interesting to hear how complex our parts get. Thanks for the video! ( I love the Washington on your side part)
Thanks for sharing parts of your great performance. I wish there was a way to get the original score so you could actually play the music with other people together.
Hi Nic.. Thanks for the comment.. I’m not sure they’ll be releasing the score publicly just yet, if ever.. I guess you could always transcribe sections you enjoy and play along to the album.. cheers, Ian
Hey Ian! Fellow pit bass player here. Just wondering what the materials for Hamilton look like in regards to what's notated and what isn't. I'll bet the lick 2:20 is in ink, right? What about some of the other fills, like :45-:55?
Hi Ben.. The parts for Hamilton are pretty heavily written to be honest, right down to the articulation for each note.. The long fill at 2:20 is written in for example.. The earlier section at :45-:52 was slash chords and I picked up on a nice run that the US bass player had put in on the album, but :48-52 is more me..
Cheers Ian. Absolutley love this video. 2 questions. can you explain what the 2 black half rolling circle things are on the left side of the synth and also can you put the link to that synth in the chat cause I wanna get the exact one
Hi there.. Thanks for the comment there.. Those black things on the left of the keyboard are mod wheels (short for modulation) but aren’t used in this show. The keyboard is a controller keyboard called an ‘Artruria Keylab 25’ and the sounds all come from ‘Mainstage’ which provides sounds for all the keyboards in the show. I think that particular Artruria model may have been superseded now, but they’re good, worth checkin out. Cheers, Ian
Great playing, Ian. I was lucky enough to catch Hamilton in London last summer. Great show. I'm curious about the time you have to put down the electric on a stand, pick up the acoustic for another number and vice-versa. That's not a show where there's long dialog sections to give you that space. Does that take real practice? Thanks!
Hi Ian, nice video! Can you please share how to create the sound at 0:48? The A-B-A “shake” sounds absolutely amazing, but I can’t seem to get it right. If you have any tips I would appreciate it! Cheers
Ian King ohh lovely! Something to invest in soon then :) thanks for getting back to me. Stay safe and I’m sure I’ll see you soon in the pit, regards Sam
Hi Jonas, thanks for the comment! I use in-ear monitors (Well, just one actually as I'm deaf in my right ear, a UE1) and I run the cable down through my T-shirt/jumper so it's completely out the way when I'm switching instruments.. I also have a headphone extension fed from the personal monitor in front of me round to a spot behind me, so I can plug in there.. Makes it all a bit easier! Cheers, Ian
Man the tones come out of those basses is absolutely unreal. Do you use any processing on the electric or do those basses just sound that unreal through the desk preamps? Hope you are well.
Hi Anthony.. Thanks for that, very kind.. There are occasional effects being used in Hamilton (octavers, chorus/tremolo on occasion!).. but generally it's just the bass into a Providence Audio Dual Bass Station pedal, which I use to balance the levels coming out of my main Overwater bass and the Lakland Hollowbody for a couple of tunes.. pretty straight through to be honest.. I'll be back there next week and I must do a 'rig rundown' vid when setting up as I've had a few queries about the gear side of things.. Cheers, Ian
@@iankingbass Hi Mate, thankyou for the reply. Crazy to hear there is not more going on! Says a lot to the mastery of your playing. Will have to check out the pedal. Would love a rig rundown for sure. Great to hear you are getting back into the theatre, soon. Best,
Fantastic. Definitely the dream gig. Is there any more of this available? Probably not for copyright reasons but I would kill to have a full playthrough from this bass player perspective. On a related note... any pointers to official/best sources for bass sheet music for Hamilton?
Hi Tim, thanks for the comment. I should do a few more vids when I get back in there. I’ll do a ‘Rig Rundown’ one too as people seem really interested in the gear side of things. I’m not sure about the availability of transcriptions etc I’m afraid.. Cheers, Ian
Hi there.. I don’t think they’d be very happy if I put the entire show on UA-cam! Ha.. The metronome, or ‘click’ as we call it, is fed to our personal monitors where can adjust the volume of all the individual instruments for our own in-ear mixes.. So, only the band are hearing this..
Hi Luc.. My Overwater bass has Bartolini pickups and a John East preamp in it.. I love it, they’re beautiful basses!.. I run it into a Providence Dual Bass Station (with the Lakland Hollowbody going into the other channel)... It goes through a true bypass switching system for the effects but essentially the sound comes from the bass and the Providence pedal.. Cheers, Ian
Nice playing! just a question, Are all those fills you are playing notated in the sheets or are you freely adding your taste? Or do you play exactly what is written on the sheets?
Hi there.. This particular show is quite heavily written, but there’s always still room to add a few of your own fills in there.. so quite a few in the video are just me adding a bit of vibe.. apart from Yorktown which is written note for note!
Hi George.. I use 35” scale length 5-string basses.. the extra inch adds that much needed tension to the 5th string.. Some basses have ‘through body stringing’ too, which can help.. I tend to have the pickup balance slightly more to the bridge pickup and will play further towards the bridge when I need things to punch through.. hope that helps
Hey Ian! This is fantastic, thanks for posting! I notice when you're on the acoustic bass with pizz. you're plucking the string quite high up the neck? I've seen bass players in more acoustic settings really putting the meat of maybe 2 fingers through the string much closer to the bridge, and their fingers take a real beating - I'm no bassist, and am just curious to know if you're playing further from the bridge because you're closer mic-ed, because you're looking for a different tone or something else?? Cheers :)
Hi Laurence.. Thanks for the message.. Well, I guess it’s a combination of being sat down (so I’m in more of a classical position) and having the instrument so well mic’ed that I don’t feel the need to batter the bell out of the instrument to get a half decent sound out of it.. I’m also preserving my fingers to a certain extent, playing a 3 hour show, of 51 songs, 8 times a week! All the best, Ian
@@iankingbass Thanks for your reply! Makes complete sense and sounds great. I was also wondering about your thoughts on playing the extremely precise pads written by Alex Lacamoire - does it make you happy because you know exactly what to do to play the show exactly how LMM and AL want it? Or do you find it a bit too prescriptive after the 300th play? Cheers
Hi Ian, firstly, great playing! The tone is great! Just wondered how you get the audio for your recordings?? Do you get a feed from the desk or take a feed from your avions? (might not be avion units but that's the only brand i know of them haha)
Hi there.. Thanks for the message.. Yeah I just take a feed out of the personal mixer into a little portable audio recorder, and then film it on a Go Pro.. The mixers we have at Hamilton are Roland ones, but I'm well versed on the Avioms too.. All the best, Ian
Hi Mythicals.. It's a J5, 21 fret design.. Ash body, maple top, maple neck & Fingerboard.. Bartolini Dual In-Line hum-cancelling pickups.. John East Uni-Pre.. Trans black burst finish.. Nice n light.. Can't recommend them enough! Enjoy!

Love the sound of that hollowbody bass in "You'll Be Back," very McCartney-like
Yes! It kinda sounds like ‘Getting Better’ from the Sgt. Pepper’s album
British music royalty.
Was gonna say it totally reminded me of McCartney
@@uknowwhoiam5982 Your right sounds very pepper
Thar single note Guitar part in the last chorus is basically directly lifted from Getting Better
I hadn’t really understood when people said that king George’s songs were beatles-inspired, but hearing you play the bass really made me get it
Nice one, thanks Rebecca 👍🏻
I've always thought "You'll Be Back" and its reprise sounded like songs Michael Buble would sing.
That ending lick from Yorktown is just fantastic
Cheers Josh, yeah there's some great writing in Hamilton eh!
Damn Broadway is underrated for its bass lines, never knew they were sooo melodic
Musical theatre show tunes have some really interesting bass parts ❤
