Chuffed to be asked to play on this fantastic track by one of my favourite pianists, John Gladstone Smith who wrote & arranged this. Hamilton Rhythm Section performing 'Engine Room'
I wonder if you could talk about your foldback mix? I'm intrigued by the use of a metronome rather than a personalized drum mix which, in 2025, is a fairly easy thing to achieve. Is this primarily because you're reading and it's the score software providing the click?
WAY too good man! Some of the best faux-synth I've ever heard.
Nice rig, top 👌🏿 But that metronome would drive me nuts on stage 😳😁 Analog FX pedals ✅👏🏿 Greetings from Uganda 🇺🇬👊🏿🖤
Great video, you need to keep this going! I shared the video on basschat today Also, I bought a 5 string sei bass off you years ago, had Chris McIntyres name on it, oval inlays, you remember it? Keep this up please, it’s a good insight into the real life of a working bassist!
Hi @@TonyShep65 Thanks for the message and great to hear from you! Thanks for sharing the vid on basschat, very kind! I’m gonna do a few more of these type o’ vids yeah. My next one will be a ‘mini-board roundup’ kinda thing, and then I’m going to look at a more affordable way to put a pro-sounding doublers board together. Anyway, yes I remember that bass, it was a good un! One of those ‘why did I let that one go’ basses! 😆
Cool video, thank you! Anyone ever tell you that you resemble David Gilmour?
Hi@@mikevonhohenstein5587 Ha, yeah a few people have actually! I’m probably a fair bit shorter than him tho! 😆
Great video thanks Ian, can I ask what stand you use for the upright bass ? I've just got my daughter an electric upright for Christmas but not sure what stand to get that's trustworthy. Thanks Again. All the best
Hello the bass monster! Thanks for the message. I’ve got a Stagg one. It’s pretty sturdy and didn’t cost hundreds of pounds! (Around £65 from what I remember - I’ve put a link in the description below). I tend to gaffa the ‘feet’ to the floor, just to be a bit ‘belt & braces’ about it all, but overall it seems pretty solid! Cheers, Ian
Hi Ian. Brilliant playing and brilliant video 🙂👌I notice you don't have a compressor pedal on your board. I'm often undecided whether to use one or not on my own gigging board (Just wondered what your thoughts are regarding using comp pedals?) 🤔
As someone who is a fan of the instrumentation in that show, this was a real treat. You’re an amazing player too.
Hi Ian, absolutely amazing playing and tone 👍🏻 did you run the fx pedals into the caveman send/returns? Many thanks ☺️
Hi @Pottsybasd76 Thanks for the kind words, most kind! And yes, I’ve put all the FX into the FX loop of the Caveman. I also use the tuner out from the Caveman to my tuner too. That way, whichever instrument is routed to the Caveman will be present at the tuner and the FX. It works great! Cheers, Ian
Nice, I wonder how the 'synth-y' sounds without the chorus pedal on
Hi @mojito6629 Good question! It’s still pretty phat, but does t have the ‘shimmer’. It’s a bit more - straight dirty n subby kinda thing.. Cheers, Ian
You’re an incredible musician. I really enjoy watching pros like you work. Thanks for putting this video together.
Hi@@dylannolan7454 Thanks for the kind words, it means a lot. Cheers, Ian
Super Sound, good Teamwork thanks to the Guitarist
Hi@@ralfbobbybopp, thanks! Yes, Andy on guitar massively helped me out there!
What iem do you use ??? I try a few but still have my KZ ZAR bye the way love your gage sounds amazing 🤩
Hi@@IAMIAM777, thanks for the question. I use Ultimate Ears IEMs. I have a model called SS which stands for Single Sided. I’m deaf in my right ear so it sums a stereo mix into one casing, all on the left side in my case.. Cheers, Ian
9:00 amazing how you can stay focussed on your playing with those vocals sounding like someone's strangling a herd of cats 😂
@@user-kb2zv5be8x 🤣🤣I’m sayin nothin! 😆
Very nice setup, great tones and playing!
@@tallbass Thanks for that, most kind! 👍🏼
Very interesting video and superb playing--- I wonder if you noticed that Ian did a separate comment to everyone who posted here--- no copy and paste so they all get the same 'thanks very much'. I'm impressed with that attention to details! Well done!
Hi Aaron, thanks for the message, I appreciate that! Yeah, I figure with such positivity coming my way, the least I can do is reply to the messages properly. Thanks again, Ian 👍🏼
Amazing rig, astonishing playing!!!!
Hi igorgodinho1279, really appreciate you taking the time to say that. Cheers and all the best to you 🫵🏼
Are you reading the actual sheet music or are you using charts? Thanks! I’m a little late on your video but it just popped up in my feed and I’m glad it did! Just subscribed. Looking forward to seeing more.
Hi bks252! Thanks for the message. Shows like this are pretty heavily notated, and Hamilton especially so. Saying that, I’ll still try to bring it to life a bit with a few extra cheeky fills here and there. Thanks for subscribing, I’ll be putting more videos out this year, so watch this space! All the best, Ian
Hi Ian! Love the videos. They really help get ideas for how to double on gigs, especially with upright and electric. Quick question, how are you capturing the audio/video from the performances?
Hi Jeff, thanks for that. Glad it was useful, the pedalboard took a fair bit of headscratching & thinking to put together, but I think I’ve got there now! I took an output from my personal monitor system onstage (luckily it had a 2nd headphone out) into my little Zoom H4N recorder. The sound you hear on this video is that, with a little bit of the GoPro sound mixed in. Cheers, Ian
Very cool’. Well it sounds great. I have the same Zoom recorder but will have to play around with a different IEM. Mine is just a simple Xvive one but I’ll see if I can split the signal. Anyway, love the videos.
I would like to know more about your Ipad set up please Ian! Are you using a specific app? Does it "track the track" as it were? I have a 1964 reissue Jazz that I bought new in 1998 I think, have been toying with the idea of changing one or both of the pickups, but almost don't want to mess with it. What would you recommend? Just the neck pickup for warmth? If so what one?
Hi Mark, thanks for the message. We’re all using an app called forScore on our iPads. It doesn’t track the music, but you can use a Bluetooth page turner pedal to turn the pages ‘hands free’ as it were. I use one by ‘AirTurn’ called a BT200. I bet your Reissue bass sounds great! Personally, the main reason I’d want to swap out the pickups would be to achieve a hum-cancelling setup. Companies like Aguilar & Nordstrand are great for this, and yes I’d probably go for a more vintage voiced set to keep things in keeping with the vibe of the instrument. The Nordstrand humcancellers with a V in the model are great. And lastly I’d definitely swap the pair out rather than just one, so that the volumes and tone is matched when you pan between them. Cheers, Ian
Doom 2 in action
Hi Vodekz1534! Yes, what a pedal! Spencer has nailed it! Cheers, Ian
@@iankingbass I am getting mine Doom 2 tomorrow, I own Octavbre MKIII too and I can not have enough of it. It cut nicely in a live situation so musical
Very nice work; super sound
@@vodekz1534 Yes, totally agree! Enjoy the Doooooom! It’s brilliant 👍🏼
Great 🔥 Thank you
Hi Giuliomolteni, thanks for that! 👍🏼🙏🏼
Absolutely stunning talent 👏
Hi@Dad-Gad Thanks so much, really appreciate it. Cheers, Ian
Fantastic tracking with that octave pedal. That's super difficult to achieve. Even more fantastic is that you've managed to reply to every single comment. Well done and good to see someone that understands community engagement. All the best!
Hey NordicBlunder, thanks for getting in touch! Yes the Aguilar octaver is a real gem, and you’re right about the tracking. I’m chuffed with the touch sensitivity of the synth sound. And yeah, I’m trying to reply to everyone, there’s been some really positive feedback & it’s only right I say thanks. Cheers, Ian
Wow! That SYNTH sounds so good! 🤩
Hi @iDMaimon Thanks! It’s great fun to play with all those pedals kicked in, that’s for sure!
@iankingbass For similar synthy sound I use my Pigtronix Octava pedal (on fuzz mode and a little bit of octave up) + Bad Stone Phaser. That's also sounds great 🙌
@@iDMaimon Man I bet that sounds wicked! I love the phaser sound, on the more extreme settings it can sound quite envelope filter-y 👍🏼
Beautiful tones & great playing, Ian! 🫡
Well that’s made my day! Thanks Will, great to hear from you 👍🏼
Could you list the settings on the Octaver, Fuzz & chorus pedals for the synth bass? I couldn't quite make them out due to the glare of the camera?
Hi there fromtheotherside! Thanks for the message, and yes I’m actually gonna make a follow up video talking about specific settings for the pedals I used. The synth sound and also the amazing Hamstead Subspace.. Watch this space, cheers, Ian
@@iankingbass Awesome - thanks. I spent all afternoon fiddling with my Octamiser and MXR chorus trying to copy your synth sound, but only had a Big Muff for the fuzz so perhaps your much better fuzz makes all the difference?
Never mind the basses, the playing is just beautiful. No wonder you are playing these kind of events.
Hi Jonathan, thanks so much, really appreciate that. I wanted to show the equipment being used in context, so it’s great fun being able to plonk the GoPro next to me to capture the gig. Cheers, Ian
How do you use that iPad? I presume you don't have every song memorised?
Hi Nick, we use an app called forScore which is essentially a PDF reader.. All the charts are organised into a set list in the app and I use a foot controller called Airturn BT200 to turn the pages.. Some tunes are heavily notated, whereas others are chord charts.. With gigs like this, where rehearsal time is minimal and mistakes are not really an option, it’s nice to have the charts in front of you! Cheers, Ian
@@iankingbass Ah thanks, that is interesting. I am not a pro, just a pub band person but having some kind of way of reminding myself would be very useful.
Very cool! I'm a drummer/percussionist and always enjoy seeing how bass players think about things. Who was on drums + perc here? A real lesson in rhythm section + click playing every time you cut to a performance video.
Hi Aidan, thanks for getting in touch, great to hear from you.. The drummer is Justin Shaw, such a top bloke to have on a gig like this, he holds the drum chair on MJ the musical in town.. The percussionist is Aisha Djidjelli who plays drums with the Hans Zimmer Live touring band.. She’s just won a couple of ‘Modern Drummer’ awards actually.. One for her work with Hans and the other for her playing on the film ‘Dune 2’.. She’s wicked! Cheers, Ian
@@iankingbass Thanks for your response Ian! I'll definitely be listening to them both more. 👍
Fantastic video, thank you. You have a touch of David Gilmour about you.
Hi there, thanks.. Ha, yeah a few people have said that… I wish I had his cash! 😆
Great video. Just a quick question, have you ever sorted your sound out and then listened to front of house, and see if the pa guy has changed it much? Do you have much sway on the sound out there?
Hi Daniel, thanks for the question.. I’ve maybe done that once or twice in the past, but generally I’ll check my sounds at home, and then at the gig (on stage) and after that I’ll just trust that the sound person knows what to do with it out front… Hopefully it was ok!.. It’s never loud enough when I watch it on TV though!! 😆
@ I’m now going to watch it to compare. Haha. Happy new year.
@@danieljames5828Happy new year to you too! 👍🏼
Hi Ian, great video and really informative- I’ve not seen the Caveman stuff before, if you were using a backline rig would you always choose BP-1 over say the DI output from an Aguilar AG700 for the FOH send?
Hi Gunsfreddy, that’s a great question. I would always choose the Caveman over the D.I. Output from an amp (even a high quality amp like an Aggie). The Caveman D.I. is … how do I put it… super awesomely posh in the extreme! Cheers, Ian
Are you sticking strictly to the notation or is there some opportunity to add some of your own personality in? I notice there was cool little thing you did in Dancing Queen and I was just wondering whether that was actually written down?
Hi Jeg1972, thanks for the message. The charts for this gig were a mixture of heavily notated ones and chord charts. The MD for this gig books people who’s playing he likes and he encourages us to bring something to each song, so even during the heavily written tunes I’ll add some cheekiness in. Usually it goes down well but there’ll be the occasion where I’m told to rein it in a bit! 😆 Cheers, Ian
Nice ! Do you use a compressor?
Hi Danny, cheers! I don’t actually, I tend to keep compressors off my theatre boards so I can play very dynamically when needed. Saying that, I would like to check out the Origin one, and also Caveman make one which goes at the end of your signal chain which I like the idea of. Anyway, you’ve given me GAS now! Must not google… 😆 Cheers, Ian
Thanks for the rundown. Really interesting to us bassists out here. 👏👏👏
Hi WallyBarnum, thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it! 👍🏼
I know that Yamaha bass! Your tone is beautiful! Loved that lower growl on the Overwater. Very interesting and informative. Liked how you created the synth sound. Yes, please do some videos on pedal setup and sound! The very best to you in 2025!🙏🏻🎉
Hi Char! Thanks for the message, and the kind words! I’ll definitely be doing some more detailed vids about settings/set-up in 2025 so watch this space! Cheers, Ian
Brilliant insight and playing.
Thanks very much!
10:13 🥵
Ha! 👍🏼
Hi Ian. Great show! You mentioned your 5-string bass at the start. It looked like it has a longer neck. Any reason for this, and what difference does it make to the overall sound?
Hi Richard, thanks for the message. Yes, this Overwater has a scale length of 34.5”, so half an inch longer than a standard bass. Might not sound a lot, but it helps keep that low B nice n tight, and the tone across the 5 strings even 👍🏼 Cheers, Ian
So what is that clicky sound all the time.? Can you hear that when you play, does the rest of the band? Does it put you off? Love the sound of your bass!!
Hi the Asrgrant, thanks for the message. That sound is the click track. Most of the gigs I do have click these days. It’s used for various reasons. In the theatre world it standardises tempos from one night to the next (none of that ‘It was a bit too slow tonight, can you speed it up a bit tomorrow please’ from the actors on stage!). On a gig like this Wembley one, it makes sure we sync up with the visuals on the big screen behind us. Also, there’s often a fair bit of track playing alongside the band, so we’ll need a click to keep in time with that. Everyone in the band is fed the click, and we can adjust the level so it’s comfortable 👍🏼Cheers, Ian
Strong Robert Lewellyn energy 💪
Ha ha, didn’t realise I was giving off Kryten vibes! 😆
Thanks for the Video Ian. Are you on in Ears for that show ?
Hi Wanmorgan, we were yes. Allen & Heath personal monitor systems next to us on stage so we can tweak away to our hearts content! 👍🏼
Great Video & Great Playing Mate - That 5 string sounds amazing!!! - Love the Yamaha basses :) I’ve had mine for years!!! Never Fails at any gig :) - Thanks again…
Thanks Grant, nice to meet a fellow Yamaha player! I feel like they’re a bit underrated those BBP ones.. They’re build like a tank and sound mega! Cheers, Ian
Great video👍 What kind of strings on the upright? Is it mostly played arco?
Top of the tree approach, great playing
Cheers Harry, much appreciated 👍🏼
Ian pure wow! Your synth sound for Olly Alexander tune needs explanation please! Deary me what a bass tone! Thank you in advance chief! 🤙
Hi acidbass, thanks so much for that! I’m definitely going to shoot an ‘explanation vid’ where I talk about the settings for the FX on this board. watch this space! Thanks again for the good vibes, Ian
Great sounds man . Monitoring ? In ears ? ,wedges ?
Hey Mr.Wilson, thanks! In-ears for this gig, with personal monitor mixers so we can create our own mixes. Cheers, Ian
The synth timbre is spot on but the touch of the player brings it all together! Thoroughly enjoyed the full rundown!
. *Just tell 'em you're Dave Gilmour playing ba ss and they'll move you from back of the stage.*
Hello TenFalconsMusic, ha! Yeah someone else said I look a bit like David Gilmour! 😆
