I have a character named Flare Moon. She's a unicorn who loves astronomy, and works for NeighSA as an astronomer. Her cutie mark is a red moon, like one in a lunar eclipse, with a trail of fire around it like a comet streaking through the sky.
( O_〉O)? See, I would, but I have a Warriors OC named Lunarflare. Flare Moon's name actually came from an inside joke with my friends where they'd always call Lunarflare "Flarelunar", and I thought it'd be funny to make an MLP OC based off of the name.
Velvet Blush You have a good point, but I feel she's probably more traumatized than introverted. She avoids the larger species by and large but doesn't have much trouble making friends with animals even if we, the viewers, might not see them as people.
Cutie marks are tricky. I have a good villain character that took me awhile to come up with a cutie mark idea, but then I settles on the idea of a Crown being engulfed by red fire. Why? Well when she was younger, a tragedy befell her, making her loath the monarchy, eventually leading her down the wrong path. So thats where I got the idea for my character's CM
But I see one big flaws about it. The overall universe's magic in MLP seem to be good (not evil or neutral, look at such thing like Elements of Harmony, Tree of Harmony, Crytal Heart, requirement of becoming alicorn(great, princess-worth deeds)) also there's no negative cutie mark (those seen as such (bad luck, maybe Diamond Tiara's tiara as being bossy...) was proven to not be actually bad... or at least not evil or "against" its pony). Concidering that... could really cutie mark represent hatress or loath? Well I doubt that. I think that - despite this idea really sounds cool, just not fitting what cutie mark are (notice also that Sombra don't have one) - loath for monarchy could be here misinterpretation make by this character, and the real meaning is different. Even if somebody go down a wrong path it definitely isn't their destiny, their calling or who she(or he, but considering Your OC is female stay at "she") really is, what making her special. And that are the things which are depicted by Cutie Mark. Notice no villain have a cutie mark reffering to being evil. Let's check this who have any cutie mark: - Starlight Glimmer - just cutie mark of magic - Nightmare Moon - cutie mark of the moon, which was just Luna's cutie mark. - Sunset Shimmer... my favourite example. Actually her cutie mark not only represent magic, but also transition from evil to good, direct line between it (two colors, which happened to be ). Her redemption was important part of her, surely is strongly connected to her calling (just see how she help others come back to the right path) and destiny, it's the most important event of her live... at the same time it also depicted her kina fiery temper, and connection to Celestia. I dare to say Sunset has one of best cutie marks. Or maybe there is some which can be interpreted so wildly, yet still so fitting, and it's just my love toward this character? Maybe try to think about it that way. I don't know if You want redemption to Your OC (but really I think that redemption is best thing about villain characters) but i think it's at least worth considering. Maybe instead of destroying monarchy and "burn it in flames" he will reform it and make even better, understanding where he go wrong during that? This flame on cutie mark could be purgatorial (like maybe dethrone evil monarch and making way of a good one - maybe even become one - surely she could't live in Equestria then, duh! Celestia is best monarch ever. Or just purge monarch surroundings from corrupted ministers etc.) instead of destroying/hating. Its red color could mean it will be throught sacrifice, maybe suffer and blood... Also both - fire and red color - could actually represent love and passion. Maybe take this into consideration?
Lyokoheros I think that her cutie mark could mean she's able to take down bad leaders, due to her past experience. It doesn't have to be in the way the cutie mark depicts, but maybe she's good at showing the flaws in a bad leader, and getting others to realize the same thing. Which could mean that in the end it could lead to the leaders redemption in a roundabout way.
My CM is a paintbrush forming a purple colored infinity sign. One,because I like to draw and I'm very good at it,and two,the infinity sign is representing infinite struggles and obstacles an artist (or anyone in particular) must overcome to achieve their goals,and infinite possibilities and chances we get and use in life.And purple is my favorite color 😂
I honestly find cm rather a interesting topic. My oc has one of an open, blank book, representing that of he is open to all and is ready to go out and quench his thirst of knowledge.
Potato Gamer the knife might be a bit too much. Maybe simplify to the telephone with blood dripping from the two ends? Or add a another horror symbol that is also recognizable, like a moth for silence of the lambs? I'm just making suggestions, but ultimately it's up to you. I just personally think the knife might be too much for the mlp fandom (not that I don't like the reasoning for it, I love horror stuff)
Ok so, here are some of MY tips and tricks ! So first, here's what I suggest if you want a ponysona : don't go for an art/video game/music Cutie Mark, think instead of what tattoo you'd like to have or what was your first tattoo. It may seem random but, usually, tattoos say a LOT about your personality ! Plus it'll help setting your ponysona apart from others. If you're creating a regular OC, I think Tya covered the basics. However, here's something design-wise : don't use more than 5 or 6 colors, and try avoiding gradients. It'll be easier to recreate, and Cutie Marks are usually quite simple. More complex looking Cutie Marks are usually harder to understand, as they are quite small compared to the pony's body. Also, I usually attach more meaning to a character's Cutie Mark than most artists. I try to think about what a character is destined to be, and what their future holds. For example, my OC Pluriores has a watch and wrench as her Cutie Mark : not only is she an engineer, but her story also involves repairing a time machine. I think it's a good way to approach Cutie Marks since they seem closely tied to destiny.
I've actually found multiple meanings to my characters' cutie marks after creating them, some meanings I never meant to be intentional, but work out great. It takes time for stories to develop from a simple mark.
My Oc is a Pegasus names melody eclipse. She is very timid and introverted, but friendly and even funny if you get to now her. Her special talent is singing, so her cutiemarck is a microfone and a few music notes. I thing it fits her back story and personality.
It didn’t honestly take to long for me, I have a snake, he is my adorable little baby, and I collect jade stones and loved the name Jade. So I did the name as Jade and the cutie mark a Jade stone with a little snake rapped around it
For fun, I once added an entire group of ponies related to cacti to my original OC's world. It was really enjoyable to merge farming and cacti into logical cutie marks, and all but three of the characters stayed. Some of the marks related to personalities (the mother, Agave, has a drop of agave nectar, since she is a very sweet pony), others to hobbies (Peyote is into herbal remedies, so he has a mortar and pestle; his brother, Saguiro, can help make flowers bloom, so he has a hummingbird), one to talent (Euphorbia's singing causes plants to grow, so hers is a singing cactus), and two to destiny (Barbero, the father, relates to him running to the farm, as a barrel cactus; Barbella's relates to the fact she will take over, with a flowering cactus).
Raisins are the DEVIL! Well, I avoided this problem by having a fox OC. Though my old Pegasus OC, Myth Teller is a history Buff and expert about Myths and Legends of any kind. That is represented by the mystical sword in the stone on his flank ;)
My oc's cutie mark is a series of different colored music notes forming a circle, like a color wheel using the notes to represent the different colors. My character itself uses his magic (unicorn of course) in music routines to make the music visual. Dull colors for low notes, brighter for higher. He himself is hard of hearing, so his talent is for his own benefit and for others looking for something they can visualize
Part of the reason I made my oc a dragon was because I couldn't think of a cutiemark. I had no ideas on what I wanted for my character's life much like my own at the time. I mainly made my oc a dragon just because I love dragons. Dragons are one of the main things I draw.
I made my OC an arctic wolf to avoid this problem, but if I did give it one, I think it would be a microphone that is a little transparent. I think it fits her because she loves to sing, but is afraid to in front of others. I could list why in the backstory if you guys want.
I made my characters cutie mark simple, a glass potion bottle with a red potion in it, with a leaf on either side of it, simply representing a talent in alchemy (The potion kind, not transmutation.) Also, for the cutie mark at 4:38, I thought it could mean that the pony with that cutiemark was good at navigating by the night sky.
I wrote a fanfic where Gabby goes back to Griffinstone and starts making cutie marks for the other Griffon out of wood. She gets stumped on Guilda's cutie mark and eventually realises that what makes Guilda special is her relationship with ponies. So I designed a horse shoe with wings, with six nail markings (the small dot/circles) in the colours of the main 6. There is a picture of the cutie mark in the final chapter. It's called Gift of a Griffon, if you are interested in seeing it.
I completely agree with all these tips! It's how I come up with cutie marks for all my ocs. I also look at their ethnicity to make it look even better; for example, my oc Trinity loves to sing and is a zebra; making her cutie mark an African style clef. The name of my ponysona, Lightblade, is only a small portion of my cutie mark; the rest is my talent for creating art.

The one I made was a bird rising above a sunrise. The Character's name is "Morning Dove" this reflects her love for birds and the fact she is a Pegasus! The "Morning" part of her name comes from her color palette! Any opinions or ideas?

Name: Sunny Twist Sunny: She's a pegasus pony who is bright and witty, and who always tries to find the light in the darkest situations, even though sometimes, the light sinks. Personality: Unique, Intelligent, Optomistic Reason: All her bad experiences but still having the ability to make ponies smile made her realize her purpose and gave her a whole new zest for life. Cutie Mark: Sun Shining Out from Behind a Cloud Meaning: She is a really good cloud-kicker. She can push away small storms both literally and figuratively. Destiny: Making Others Feel Better in Bad Times Backstory: I'm not quite done yet, but here are some details: -Was born in Cloudsdale. -Was a complete outcast her whole life. -Wanted to join the Wonderbolts. -Was discouraged by her parents. -Married a rich stallion in Manehattan who had no intrest in her. -Worked as a maid for the rich stallion. -Was kidnapped. -She escaped into the everfree forest. -She opened a small buisness in Ponyville. -More details I haven't thought of.
My oc is quite interesting... She lives in another land Which is a mountain where other ponies have evolved to live there like pointy hooves, a lot of fur and bigger eyes and i tell their history Well when the three pony types became friends, 4 Pegasi didnt like the idea of friends and so they left to the mountains and so horse spirit things followed them (i forgot their name) beacause the ones which were "Killed" wasnt all of their kind anyways years later some rules were made at the mountain also some beliefs so if you broke a rule you would be forced to leave and be frozen alive and the horse spirits would play with the ponies souls by telling the pony all the bad things they have done and feed off their sins but after some time the pony would be unfrozen and brought back to the camp as their punishment had finished, there was also a belief that every year you got a wish from the horse spirits but the non important ponies will only get simple wishes like crops, food, water and so on but the more important ponies would get better wishes. And thats the main things (i havent come up with the rules on the land) oh also the mountains name is EverWinter Wow i havent even started to talk about my oc.. i guess i worked more than i should have xdd oh well All you need to know that she worked the night shift and guarded the camp but she was made fun of her eyes being different colors she also loved adventures but it was boring being traped in camp she also was interested about how the pony on the moon (luna) disappeared and from her curiosity she left camp and was frozen but you see when they get frozen they fall doen hill in a pit but her frozen self missed the pit and ended up in the EverFree Forest and the rest will be a secret but she has a stress problem and she likes being alone she also have axienty so ya theres more but im too lazy to type anymore and also you can make a oc in the EverWinter mountain camp only if you say it wasnt your idea of the place and ill be happy Good bye!!
My oc has a fether in a writing position and with snow flakes around it because she likes to make wishes and she only makes wishes in winter. Her name is Winter Wishes.
As a Gemini, I have always had problems settling on any one specific OC. My main, representative OCs have always come in twos. However, the pony OCs have always had the same cutie mark- a prism. (Since my ocs are two different ponies, one's CM is a reflection of the other)
What doea that have anything to do with you being a gemini- star signs play nothing in finding a good cm (unless you make the cutie mark based off of the sign, ofc)
My added tip: keep it simple!! Keep it down to just a few colors and patterns if you can. The cutie mark should add to your OC and their design without taking away focus from the rest of them! Most cutie marks in the show only have a few colors and lines/shapes, even if those are repeated. Don't overdo it!
My Oc is named 'Rockhopper' her cutie mark is a rockhopper penguin. She goes around equestria (mainly ponyville at the moment) with a petition to save penguins from global warming.

Marla: She had gotten a partially broken heart cause of how easy it is for her to love someone (heart origin), but how broken she is and how much things she's been through (broken origin) Max: Since he's really calm, but somewhat cruel or cold, his cutie mark would be a snowflake, but dark colored due to his knowledge in powerful magic Melissa: possibly a beaker, for she is intelligent and works as a scientist

Well, right now I'm struggling with some of my OCs and figuring out my ponysona and stuff. My current sona is an earth pony named Critical Question, and her mark is a quill with a question mark. She loves to write and draw, as well as many other activities. Her mark represents finding yourself and figuring out who you are, which she is still thinking about.
My OC's name is Azalea Harmony and her cutie mark is a flower with music notes in between the petals because she makes herbal concoctions designed to soothe the throat and improve vocal abilities, as she is a vocal trainer as an occupation.
Watched this a while ago, but I came back to rewatch and comment! I made an OC based off of myself, but it proved to be quite hard when I tried to make a cutiemark. I wanted it to be something that I'm good at, but I'm interested in doing a lot of stuff, and I don't have a specific talent. So I ended up making a detailed cutiemark. The cutiemark was a stuffed animal bunny and a needle sewing the button eye. I wanted it to show my love for sewing, but also my love for animals! I think it fits my OC quite well! 😁💮
I am still deciding on my favourite OC. I have a Deer she's a Red Doe, a Sheep and a Pegasus. They all represent something. In my country we have a lot of birds so Pegasus and my Pegasus has the dished Arabian nose in my country we had a lot of Arabians and the deer is because we have a lot of red deer and sheep because we have more sheep then people. You guessed it, I'm a kiwi, the sheep was a dead giveaway. For my Red doe I named her Fauna, her cutie mark is a tree sprout. (She shouldn't have a cutie mark but it is kinda like Zecora.) For my sheep her name is CreamyDream and here cutie mark is a paint splatter _or I suppose it could be a cream splatter?_ (she is a sheep and should not have a cutie mark which is why I kinda made it a cutie mark that is not a cutie mark, like Zecora.) For my pony her name is CrescentShiver and her cutie mark is a half-moon with moon-rays beaming down from it.
My oc Lost shove has a swirl for a cutie Mark, I thought this would fit with her crazy and lost persona A pony made her hit her head on a metal box making her eyes do that cartoony swirl and then her cutie mark pop up, sher grew up not knowing what it means. The cutie mark crusaders had to help her... Meaning her cutie mark means her tendency for being crazy and ' mad ' This is the reason she is the royal mad scientist In some designs she has a broken horn but I might not keep that.
Another great way to get a cutie mark is searching for an event (or person) from the past that has a connection to your OC's personality and using an object from that event (or person) to represent your cutie mark. Also if its a person he might have had a tatoo you could use, though that's kinda weird imo ngl. For example, if your OC's personality requires him to always be at a slight advantage compared to his surroundings to feel comfortable, you could search up a paranoid personality from the past (like a mad scientist or something) and use an object he is constantly around or that he always carries around as your cutie mark, or at least as a base (a start) for your cutie mark. The more research you do the more "cutie marks from the past" you can combind (the more time you put into it, the more 'original' it becomes)
My OC is an author named Daydreamer, and her cutie mark is a curved crescent (representing a closed eye) with a sun arching over it. It represents her ability to close her eyes at any time and think of stories to share with others! It's also a bit of a name reflection, with the closed eye and sun being "Daydreamer".

I commented more about my character Nightlight on your name video, but basically she has a gold star. For me it represents the part of her that's the shining light of hope that exists among the dark, and being very smart and advanced in her talent. I really couldn't think of a central symbol that represented all machinery and technology, nor could I present it in a 5x5 pixel frame. She is good at a few other things though, and most of them have presented her the gold star trait.
My OC's Cutie Mark was designed based of my OC's name which came from a pony name generator. I guess my OC's talent is playing games & creating art. (I'll admit it is a little misleading because of the red dice, and because i don't gamble like that) The Dice represents Playing Games and the Pastel coloured wheel represents Art.

I think it’s good to define about two to three different things such as objects or symbols like stars and add between two to five colours and mix it up until you find something that could work for you.
Mine is a pink quill drawing a unfinished black and drippy outline of a heart. I made this for myself because I love to draw, write, and daydream in my free time and being creative is what the quill stands for. The unfinished heart symbolizes the fact that im a very emotional person and I use writing and drawing to express myself when I feel to shy to talk about it. I also think that caring for others is super important and is something I like to do, and I also love to write romance stories so that goes along with my writing passion too. I also added the drippiness to the ink because I thought it looked kind of creepy and I love horror.
my cutie mark is my youtube initials in a heart to make it looked cracked, i have a very weird personality, i also have mental illnesses (depression anxiety amd bipolar disorder) and have adhd. so my character is pretty mixed, and thats why my cutie mark is the way it is.
I based my Cutie mark off the name and I find that it suits him rather well, even if it's just 3 obsidian stones. I didn't want to make his backstory rather bland, vague, generic, or outright unappealing, I wanted to add a more in-depth and darker story. (Hence the references of rocks and somewhat of the name) It was also a challenge to find a place where to put him, A time zone in the mlp universe where my story would fit, until i remembered where I first watched the show, Season 3 Premiere.

I picked a cartoon-style bomb with a lit fuse and "1/0" on it. Admittedly, I could have done a better job matching it to their actual talent - namely, breaking other forms of magic using chaos magic - but I've had it that way for a while now so I've never really felt inspired to change it.
If I end up making an oc based on myself I will have a cutie mark in the shape of a Red Cross with white line going through the Red Cross but doesn't overlap through the middle it jumps over and on each gab between the cross I will have a dog paw, a cat paw, a hoof, and a birds talon, still planning which animals feet I will use specifically but that's the main idea what do you thing, is that a good one?
I have it simple. my OC's cutiemark got cut off in a big war while under interrogation (as well as his wings) so the only thing that is left, is a scar. NAILED IT! :D :P

My OC is an unicorn named Paige Writer (Sorry for bad name) her cutie mark is an open book with magic coming out of it. She got it after defending her best friends from a magical creature with her magic and wrote a little book about it and showed it to everyone. After getting praised for such a well-written book, BOOM! Cutie Mark Intensifies. She has a light yellow coat, dark brown eyes, and a wavy yellow to red ombre mane. She does likes writing stories and sometimes it does get published
My character's mark is whisk which had a bit of whipped cream on top, and 2 twinkling stars around. It represents the character's love for baking and being the taste tester in pretty much everything. They love baking cakes and trying to figure out different flavours (specially at ice cream shop. They are first on the line)
My OC might one day have a cutie mark; he doesn't right now because when I got into MLP and created him, I believed that I had no purpose or worth and had some pretty bad depression as a result. So, naturally, I left my ponysona's flank blank to express that lack of self-definition or direction. I think I might one day be able to have a mark, but just like me, I guess my ponysona will also be a late bloomer.
The biggest problem i find with OC cutiemarks is when the oc´s name reflects their cutiemark. How would that even be posible? A pony is named at birth or a bit after. You get your cutiemark years after you born. How can you be name after your cutiemark, if you didnt even had your cutiemark at birth to take as reference for your own name?! Its paradoxal o-o
I recently ended up designing the character that I decided will be my primary MLP oc (the one I will use whenever I try my hand, or hoof) at mlp based videos or websites for an avatar. As for the cutiemark? Well, I decided that it would tie into something that I recently came to realize is a trye talent of mine; DECK BUILDING! No, not the deck that you sit on. Im talking about TCG deck building. The cutie mark is the Crit symbol from Cardfight vanguard (6 arrows forming a star) but shaded a bright lime green rather than the typical yellow or blue. I chose this particular image, partly for ease, but also because Cardfight Vanguard is the game I play most often amongst TCGs. Though I also play things like Buddyfight and some MtG and a bit of yugioh, the Crit star is a more likable idea for me than showing a deck that's being shuffled up.
think about what your good at for example art and then think about some creative twists like turn it into a amethyst paint brush painting the galaxy. P.S.thats my cutie mark.
what about drawing a paper with some text in it and then drawing a game controller and few music notes...either on the paper with the text or around it 🤔

My ponysona is a paranormal investigator Pegasus called Riddle Chaser, they have a cutie mark of a UFO with 3 question marks around it since they study the unknown creatures in the Everfree Forest, and they have a small house on the outskirts of Ponyville dedicated to researching and documenting anything bizarre found. They're basically the X-Files or Buzzfeed Unsolved of Equestria ^^;;

I sometimes find that a cutie mark design can inform a character's personality instead of the other way around, especially if they're recent. When I made my Beetle Beat character I'd already decided she was going to have a bug theme and that was going to be her cutie mark - a beetle - but I didn't have much of a personality for her. But I thought about how beetles are strong and sturdy animals and that inspired me to make her a lot more stoic and calm; so her beetle cutie mark not only represents her main interest being insects, but also her emotional strength as a character.
My particular cutie mark is rather complicated; it's a raindrop symbol with my symbol (looks kinda like a cursive "z") inside it, with two phoenix wings sprouting from the sides. My oc actually has the symbol on his helmet so you can see it easier. The raindrop originally symbolized my fascination with the physical workings of vehicles, and how they move. A raindrop shape is largely considered to be the most aerodynamic shape. As time passed, however, it has come to symbolize the grief and pain that I sometimes feel at the loss of people I love. The inner symbol doesn't actually mean anything important, but it's what I've always used in conjunction with any art, music, or business ideas as a sort of signature; it's a shape that I find aesthetically pleasing, so I've been using it since childhood. The Phoenix wings represent my Christianity. Much like a Phoenix that dies and is reborn from the ashes, I've died to my sins, and have been reborn as a believer. It seems simple, but it's waaaaay deeper than you think.
My OC has a black coat,and her hair color is blue,red,and a metallic blue (looks darker) her main is flicked to one side covering her eye,her name is....(I don't have a name for her..please reply and tell me your opinion!!!) and her cutie mark is a shield because she likes to protect her village.(and she's a Pegasus)
this is probably a little late but if you were thinking about backstory you could do it so that a long time ago she couldn't protect someone or something she loved and that something bad happened. This could have been because she was goofing off so after that she became very serious to the point that it annoys others. Or she could blame herself for this and become super overprotective of others as a result

My CM has a star overflowing with magic with two arms cradling it this represents my how my character still has a lot to learn about his newfound magic and how it could lead to many situations (as he doesn't know how to control his magic yet).
I have two OCs but the one I plan to use the most for stories is a unicorn named DarkLight. She is a filly, and does not have her cutie mark as of yet, but I have what her cutie mark will be set in stone already. Her cutie mark will be a lit up light bulb, because she has plenty of ‘bright’ ideas and also helps to guide other fillies through dark places using her more light based magic (also because of her name)
My three OCs, and how I've designed them (so far) Nova Nebula [M]: A nerdy unicorn with a classical unicorn tail, a long spiral horn, and a small beard. His body fur is a medium grey, while his mane is purple and yellow-orange. His eyes are yellow-orange as well. His talent is so far undecided, but I'd assume I'd try to make it something about astronomy. Obscure Sketch [M]: A pegasi who lacks the ability to fly. He has a brown coat, with three different shades of blue in his mane (Which highly resembles Rainbow Dash's mane and tail). His eye color is undecided. He has little to no social intelligence and instead uses logic to decide his actions. (Mildly Autistic) If you haven't guessed it, he's supposed to be an artist. Oak Spring [F]: A hyperactive earth pony who is in love with nature. She is always distracted, no matter what's happening. She is bipolar as well, which affects her school performance as well as her social performance. She had a peachy-brown base, with splotches of brown. Her mane is two shades of green. I want to give her green eyes, but I'm not sure. She's the tom-boy. Her talent will be about nature, seeing as she's the rowdy earth pony. There's supposed to be a fourth member, someone who's a different species. I've made multiple sketches, but I don't know what I want the fourth member to be. Any suggestions? [Btw these are all kids still in school]

my oldest mlp oc is a light green pegasus with a red and white mane named, Pepper Mint. she used to have a red lighting bolt with a white stripe for her cutie mark. it was literally my first attempt but i kept that design for years. I recently took to redesigning all my pony ocs, including good old Pepper Mint. her cutie mark is now a simple tan map with a small red lightning bolt, instead of an X, she's a map maker by trade and her talent is being able to find things/find her way around any terrain. I recently (today) found your channel and i was kinda suprised to see that you also have a deer as an oc! (But mine is female)! My oc has a pencil turning into a tree as a cutiemark (not moving) due to the fact that she owns a diary/scetchbook and often draws or writes in it at the place she loves most - the forest. That doesn't mean she's based on fluttershy, because she doesn't do too well with animals... aka most animals hate her. She is shy though, and often spends time alone. Most drawings i have of her is a teen/filly. Her name is unclear, but i just call her Rogue.
My character's an alicorn, and I have a well thought out reason for it, but I won't go through it in this comment. Anyway, she has a cutie mark that has two meanings, and isn't immediately obvious. Her cm is a star with Saturn-like rings around it that have s hint of paint splatters. As well as two little drops of paint around it. The star and the rings represent her ability to go through space and different universes, also representing a black hole. While the rings go in different directions, shows that she can be rather confusing but adaptable to change. Her cutie mark has two meanings, space, and also her love for art. She's a very good artist, and draws all the time, the paint splatters on her cutie mark represent that. She often paints out her plans of creating different universes, how she's going to do things, heck even plan how she's going to do an art piece. If you can't tell, she's the princess of space and universes. And is the protector of space. Protecting ponies from any asteroids, meteorites, or any supernovas occurring. She is also the cause of meteor showers, and brings this event every year.
This makes me wanna work on my first OC ever 😅 i haven't been in the pony community since high-school so it isn't my current goal for my future in starting animations, BUT being my first OC with a really strong story towards her creation, gotta keep giving her some love ❤

Cutie marks are tricky. I have a good villain character that took me awhile to come up with a cutie mark idea, but then I settles on the idea of a Crown being engulfed by red fire.
Why?
Well when she was younger, a tragedy befell her, making her loath the monarchy, eventually leading her down the wrong path.

But I see one big flaws about it.
The overall universe's magic in MLP seem to be good (not evil or neutral, look at such thing like Elements of Harmony, Tree of Harmony, Crytal Heart, requirement of becoming alicorn(great, princess-worth deeds)) also there's no negative cutie mark (those seen as such (bad luck, maybe Diamond Tiara's tiara as being bossy...) was proven to not be actually bad... or at least not evil or "against" its pony). Concidering that... could really cutie mark represent hatress or loath? Well I doubt that.
I think that - despite this idea really sounds cool, just not fitting what cutie mark are (notice also that Sombra don't have one) - loath for monarchy could be here misinterpretation make by this character, and the real meaning is different. Even if somebody go down a wrong path it definitely isn't their destiny, their calling or who she(or he, but considering Your OC is female stay at "she") really is, what making her special. And that are the things which are depicted by Cutie Mark.
Notice no villain have a cutie mark reffering to being evil. Let's check this who have any cutie mark:
- Starlight Glimmer - just cutie mark of magic
- Nightmare Moon - cutie mark of the moon, which was just Luna's cutie mark.
- Sunset Shimmer... my favourite example. Actually her cutie mark not only represent magic, but also transition from evil to good, direct line between it (two colors, which happened to be ). Her redemption was important part of her, surely is strongly connected to her calling (just see how she help others come back to the right path) and destiny, it's the most important event of her live... at the same time it also depicted her kina fiery temper, and connection to Celestia. I dare to say Sunset has one of best cutie marks. Or maybe there is some which can be interpreted so wildly, yet still so fitting, and it's just my love toward this character?
Maybe try to think about it that way. I don't know if You want redemption to Your OC (but really I think that redemption is best thing about villain characters) but i think it's at least worth considering.
Maybe instead of destroying monarchy and "burn it in flames" he will reform it and make even better, understanding where he go wrong during that? This flame on cutie mark could be purgatorial (like maybe dethrone evil monarch and making way of a good one - maybe even become one - surely she could't live in Equestria then, duh! Celestia is best monarch ever. Or just purge monarch surroundings from corrupted ministers etc.) instead of destroying/hating. Its red color could mean it will be throught sacrifice, maybe suffer and blood...
Also both - fire and red color - could actually represent love and passion. Maybe take this into consideration?
Lyokoheros I think that her cutie mark could mean she's able to take down bad leaders, due to her past experience. It doesn't have to be in the way the cutie mark depicts, but maybe she's good at showing the flaws in a bad leader, and getting others to realize the same thing. Which could mean that in the end it could lead to the leaders redemption in a roundabout way.
I like this idea. Especially it's still perfectly fits most important thing of those I've written - cutie marks always have good meaning.

Ok so, here are some of MY tips and tricks !
So first, here's what I suggest if you want a ponysona : don't go for an art/video game/music Cutie Mark, think instead of what tattoo you'd like to have or what was your first tattoo. It may seem random but, usually, tattoos say a LOT about your personality ! Plus it'll help setting your ponysona apart from others.
If you're creating a regular OC, I think Tya covered the basics. However, here's something design-wise : don't use more than 5 or 6 colors, and try avoiding gradients. It'll be easier to recreate, and Cutie Marks are usually quite simple. More complex looking Cutie Marks are usually harder to understand, as they are quite small compared to the pony's body.
Also, I usually attach more meaning to a character's Cutie Mark than most artists. I try to think about what a character is destined to be, and what their future holds. For example, my OC Pluriores has a watch and wrench as her Cutie Mark : not only is she an engineer, but her story also involves repairing a time machine. I think it's a good way to approach Cutie Marks since they seem closely tied to destiny.

My Oc is a Pegasus names melody eclipse.
She is very timid and introverted, but friendly and even funny if you get to now her. Her special talent is singing, so her cutiemarck is a microfone and a few music notes. I thing it fits her back story and personality.

For fun, I once added an entire group of ponies related to cacti to my original OC's world. It was really enjoyable to merge farming and cacti into logical cutie marks, and all but three of the characters stayed. Some of the marks related to personalities (the mother, Agave, has a drop of agave nectar, since she is a very sweet pony), others to hobbies (Peyote is into herbal remedies, so he has a mortar and pestle; his brother, Saguiro, can help make flowers bloom, so he has a hummingbird), one to talent (Euphorbia's singing causes plants to grow, so hers is a singing cactus), and two to destiny (Barbero, the father, relates to him running to the farm, as a barrel cactus; Barbella's relates to the fact she will take over, with a flowering cactus).

Well, I avoided this problem by having a fox OC. Though my old Pegasus OC, Myth Teller is a history Buff and expert about Myths and Legends of any kind. That is represented by the mystical sword in the stone on his flank ;)

My oc's cutie mark is a series of different colored music notes forming a circle, like a color wheel using the notes to represent the different colors. My character itself uses his magic (unicorn of course) in music routines to make the music visual. Dull colors for low notes, brighter for higher. He himself is hard of hearing, so his talent is for his own benefit and for others looking for something they can visualize

Part of the reason I made my oc a dragon was because I couldn't think of a cutiemark. I had no ideas on what I wanted for my character's life much like my own at the time. I mainly made my oc a dragon just because I love dragons. Dragons are one of the main things I draw.

I made my characters cutie mark simple, a glass potion bottle with a red potion in it, with a leaf on either side of it, simply representing a talent in alchemy (The potion kind, not transmutation.) Also, for the cutie mark at 4:38, I thought it could mean that the pony with that cutiemark was good at navigating by the night sky.
I wrote a fanfic where Gabby goes back to Griffinstone and starts making cutie marks for the other Griffon out of wood. She gets stumped on Guilda's cutie mark and eventually realises that what makes Guilda special is her relationship with ponies. So I designed a horse shoe with wings, with six nail markings (the small dot/circles) in the colours of the main 6. There is a picture of the cutie mark in the final chapter. It's called Gift of a Griffon, if you are interested in seeing it.

I completely agree with all these tips! It's how I come up with cutie marks for all my ocs. I also look at their ethnicity to make it look even better; for example, my oc Trinity loves to sing and is a zebra; making her cutie mark an African style clef. The name of my ponysona, Lightblade, is only a small portion of my cutie mark; the rest is my talent for creating art.

The one I made was a bird rising above a sunrise. The Character's name is "Morning Dove" this reflects her love for birds and the fact she is a Pegasus! The "Morning" part of her name comes from her color palette!

Name: Sunny Twist Sunny: She's a pegasus pony who is bright and witty, and who always tries to find the light in the darkest situations, even though sometimes, the light sinks. But it always rises again at some point. Twist: She is unique and stands out from the crowd. She likes a good plot twist and embraces change as a natural part of life. Personality: Unique, Intelligent, Optomistic Reason: All her bad experiences but still having the ability to make ponies smile made her realize her purpose and gave her a whole new zest for life. Cutie Mark: Sun Shining Out from Behind a Cloud Meaning: She is a really good cloud-kicker. She can push away small storms both literally and figuratively. Destiny: Making Others Feel Better in Bad Times Backstory: I'm not quite done yet, but here are some details: -Was born in Cloudsdale. -Was a complete outcast her whole life. -Wanted to join the Wonderbolts. -Was discouraged by her parents. -Married a rich stallion in Manehattan who had no intrest in her. -Worked as a maid for the rich stallion. -Was kidnapped. -She escaped into the everfree forest. -She opened a small buisness in Ponyville. -More details I haven't thought of.

Well when the three pony types became friends, 4 Pegasi didnt like the idea of friends and so they left to the mountains and so horse spirit things followed them (i forgot their name) beacause the ones which were
"Killed" wasnt all of their kind anyways years later some rules were made at the mountain also some beliefs so if you broke a rule you would be forced to leave and be frozen alive and the horse spirits would play with the ponies souls by telling the pony all the bad things they have done and feed off their sins but after some time the pony would be unfrozen and brought back to the camp as their punishment had finished, there was also a belief that every year you got a wish from the horse spirits but the non important ponies will only get simple wishes like crops, food, water and so on but the more important ponies would get better wishes.
And thats the main things (i havent come up with the rules on the land) oh also the mountains name is EverWinter

As a Gemini, I have always had problems settling on any one specific OC. My main, representative OCs have always come in twos. However, the pony OCs have always had the same cutie mark- a prism. (Since my ocs are two different ponies, one's CM is a reflection of the other)
What doea that have anything to do with you being a gemini- star signs play nothing in finding a good cm (unless you make the cutie mark based off of the sign, ofc)
My added tip: keep it simple!! Keep it down to just a few colors and patterns if you can. The cutie mark should add to your OC and their design without taking away focus from the rest of them! Most cutie marks in the show only have a few colors and lines/shapes, even if those are repeated. Don't overdo it!

Marla: She had gotten a partially broken heart cause of how easy it is for her to love someone (heart origin), but how broken she is and how much things she's been through (broken origin)
Max: Since he's really calm, but somewhat cruel or cold, his cutie mark would be a snowflake, but dark colored due to his knowledge in powerful magic
Melissa: possibly a beaker, for she is intelligent and works as a scientist
This video helped me a lot, my OC was a passionate theatre actor and I didn't really know what the cutie mark should have been and I didn't really want a cutie mark that every one has, after watching this video I ended up finding a perfect cutie mark a spotlight as she loves being the centre of attention.

Watched this a while ago, but I came back to rewatch and comment! I made an OC based off of myself, but it proved to be quite hard when I tried to make a cutiemark. I wanted it to be something that I'm good at, but I'm interested in doing a lot of stuff, and I don't have a specific talent. So I ended up making a detailed cutiemark. The cutiemark was a stuffed animal bunny and a needle sewing the button eye. I wanted it to show my love for sewing, but also my love for animals! I think it fits my OC quite well! 😁💮
I am still deciding on my favourite OC. I have a Deer she's a Red Doe, a Sheep and a Pegasus. They all represent something. In my country we have a lot of birds so Pegasus and my Pegasus has the dished Arabian nose in my country we had a lot of Arabians and the deer is because we have a lot of red deer and sheep because we have more sheep then people. You guessed it, I'm a kiwi, the sheep was a dead giveaway.
For my Red doe I named her Fauna, her cutie mark is a tree sprout. (She shouldn't have a cutie mark but it is kinda like Zecora.)
For my sheep her name is CreamyDream and here cutie mark is a paint splatter _or I suppose it could be a cream splatter?_ (she is a sheep and should not have a cutie mark which is why I kinda made it a cutie mark that is not a cutie mark, like Zecora.)
For my pony her name is CrescentShiver and her cutie mark is a half-moon with moon-rays beaming down from it.

Another great way to get a cutie mark is searching for an event (or person) from the past that has a connection to your OC's personality and using an object from that event (or person) to represent your cutie mark. Also if its a person he might have had a tatoo you could use, though that's kinda weird imo ngl.
For example, if your OC's personality requires him to always be at a slight advantage compared to his surroundings to feel comfortable, you could search up a paranoid personality from the past (like a mad scientist or something) and use an object he is constantly around or that he always carries around as your cutie mark, or at least as a base (a start) for your cutie mark.
The more research you do the more "cutie marks from the past" you can combind (the more time you put into it, the more 'original' it becomes)
This helped a lot when I needed to figure out how to find my OC's cutie mark! DEFINITELY SUBSCRIBING!!!!
My OC is an author named Daydreamer, and her cutie mark is a curved crescent (representing a closed eye) with a sun arching over it. It represents her ability to close her eyes at any time and think of stories to share with others! It's also a bit of a name reflection, with the closed eye and sun being "Daydreamer".

I commented more about my character Nightlight on your name video, but basically she has a gold star. For me it represents the part of her that's the shining light of hope that exists among the dark, and being very smart and advanced in her talent. I really couldn't think of a central symbol that represented all machinery and technology, nor could I present it in a 5x5 pixel frame. She is good at a few other things though, and most of them have presented her the gold star trait.
My OC's Cutie Mark was designed based of my OC's name which came from a pony name generator.
I guess my OC's talent is playing games & creating art. (I'll admit it is a little misleading because of the red dice, and because i don't gamble like that) The Dice represents Playing Games and the Pastel coloured wheel represents Art.

I think it’s good to define about two to three different things such as objects or symbols like stars and add between two to five colours and mix it up until you find something that could work for you.
Mine is a pink quill drawing a unfinished black and drippy outline of a heart. I made this for myself because I love to draw, write, and daydream in my free time and being creative is what the quill stands for. The unfinished heart symbolizes the fact that im a very emotional person and I use writing and drawing to express myself when I feel to shy to talk about it. I also think that caring for others is super important and is something I like to do, and I also love to write romance stories so that goes along with my writing passion too. I also added the drippiness to the ink because I thought it looked kind of creepy and I love horror.
my cutie mark is my youtube initials in a heart to make it looked cracked, i have a very weird personality, i also have mental illnesses (depression anxiety amd bipolar disorder) and have adhd. so my character is pretty mixed, and thats why my cutie mark is the way it is.

I based my Cutie mark off the name and I find that it suits him rather well, even if it's just 3 obsidian stones. I didn't want to make his backstory rather bland, vague, generic, or outright unappealing, I wanted to add a more in-depth and darker story. (Hence the references of rocks and somewhat of the name) It was also a challenge to find a place where to put him, A time zone in the mlp universe where my story would fit, until i remembered where I first watched the show, Season 3 Premiere.

I picked a cartoon-style bomb with a lit fuse and "1/0" on it. Admittedly, I could have done a better job matching it to their actual talent - namely, breaking other forms of magic using chaos magic - but I've had it that way for a while now so I've never really felt inspired to change it.
If I end up making an oc based on myself I will have a cutie mark in the shape of a Red Cross with white line going through the Red Cross but doesn't overlap through the middle it jumps over and on each gab between the cross I will have a dog paw, a cat paw, a hoof, and a birds talon, still planning which animals feet I will use specifically but that's the main idea what do you thing, is that a good one?

My OC is an unicorn named Paige Writer (Sorry for bad name) her cutie mark is an open book with magic coming out of it. She got it after defending her best friends from a magical creature with her magic and wrote a little book about it and showed it to everyone. After getting praised for such a well-written book, BOOM! Cutie Mark Intensifies. She has a light yellow coat, dark brown eyes, and a wavy yellow to red ombre mane. She does likes writing stories and sometimes it does get published
My character's mark is whisk which had a bit of whipped cream on top, and 2 twinkling stars around. It represents the character's love for baking and being the taste tester in pretty much everything. They love baking cakes and trying to figure out different flavours (specially at ice cream shop. They are first on the line)

My OC might one day have a cutie mark; he doesn't right now because when I got into MLP and created him, I believed that I had no purpose or worth and had some pretty bad depression as a result. So, naturally, I left my ponysona's flank blank to express that lack of self-definition or direction. I think I might one day be able to have a mark, but just like me, I guess my ponysona will also be a late bloomer.

The biggest problem i find with OC cutiemarks is when the oc´s name reflects their cutiemark.
How would that even be posible? A pony is named at birth or a bit after. You get your cutiemark years after you born.
How can you be name after your cutiemark, if you didnt even had your cutiemark at birth to take as reference for your own name?! Its paradoxal o-o

I recently ended up designing the character that I decided will be my primary MLP oc (the one I will use whenever I try my hand, or hoof) at mlp based videos or websites for an avatar. As for the cutiemark? Well, I decided that it would tie into something that I recently came to realize is a trye talent of mine; DECK BUILDING! No, not the deck that you sit on. Im talking about TCG deck building.
The cutie mark is the Crit symbol from Cardfight vanguard (6 arrows forming a star) but shaded a bright lime green rather than the typical yellow or blue. I chose this particular image, partly for ease, but also because Cardfight Vanguard is the game I play most often amongst TCGs. Though I also play things like Buddyfight and some MtG and a bit of yugioh, the Crit star is a more likable idea for me than showing a deck that's being shuffled up.
think about what your good at for example art and then think about some creative twists like turn it into a amethyst paint brush painting the galaxy. P.S.thats my cutie mark.

I sometimes find that a cutie mark design can inform a character's personality instead of the other way around, especially if they're recent.
When I made my Beetle Beat character I'd already decided she was going to have a bug theme and that was going to be her cutie mark - a beetle - but I didn't have much of a personality for her.
But I thought about how beetles are strong and sturdy animals and that inspired me to make her a lot more stoic and calm; so her beetle cutie mark not only represents her main interest being insects, but also her emotional strength as a character.
My particular cutie mark is rather complicated; it's a raindrop symbol with my symbol (looks kinda like a cursive "z") inside it, with two phoenix wings sprouting from the sides. My oc actually has the symbol on his helmet so you can see it easier. The raindrop originally symbolized my fascination with the physical workings of vehicles, and how they move. A raindrop shape is largely considered to be the most aerodynamic shape. As time passed, however, it has come to symbolize the grief and pain that I sometimes feel at the loss of people I love. The inner symbol doesn't actually mean anything important, but it's what I've always used in conjunction with any art, music, or business ideas as a sort of signature; it's a shape that I find aesthetically pleasing, so I've been using it since childhood. The Phoenix wings represent my Christianity. Much like a Phoenix that dies and is reborn from the ashes, I've died to my sins, and have been reborn as a believer. It seems simple, but it's waaaaay deeper than you think.
My OC has a black coat,and her hair color is blue,red,and a metallic blue (looks darker) her main is flicked to one side covering her eye,her name is....(I don't have a name for her..please reply and tell me your opinion!!!) and her cutie mark is a shield because she likes to protect her village.(and she's a Pegasus)
this is probably a little late but if you were thinking about backstory you could do it so that a long time ago she couldn't protect someone or something she loved and that something bad happened. This could have been because she was goofing off so after that she became very serious to the point that it annoys others. Or she could blame herself for this and become super overprotective of others as a result

I've found I like abstract cutie marks best. Abstracts are fun because they can have multiple interpretations allowing for a more complex character.
My CM has a star overflowing with magic with two arms cradling it this represents my how my character still has a lot to learn about his newfound magic and how it could lead to many situations (as he doesn't know how to control his magic yet).

I have two OCs but the one I plan to use the most for stories is a unicorn named DarkLight. She is a filly, and does not have her cutie mark as of yet, but I have what her cutie mark will be set in stone already. Her cutie mark will be a lit up light bulb, because she has plenty of ‘bright’ ideas and also helps to guide other fillies through dark places using her more light based magic (also because of her name)
My three OCs, and how I've designed them (so far)
Nova Nebula [M]: A nerdy unicorn with a classical unicorn tail, a long spiral horn, and a small beard. His body fur is a medium grey, while his mane is purple and yellow-orange. His eyes are yellow-orange as well.
His talent is so far undecided, but I'd assume I'd try to make it something about astronomy.
Obscure Sketch [M]: A pegasi who lacks the ability to fly. He has a brown coat, with three different shades of blue in his mane (Which highly resembles Rainbow Dash's mane and tail). His eye color is undecided. He has little to no social intelligence and instead uses logic to decide his actions. (Mildly Autistic)
If you haven't guessed it, he's supposed to be an artist.
Oak Spring [F]: A hyperactive earth pony who is in love with nature. She is always distracted, no matter what's happening. She is bipolar as well, which affects her school performance as well as her social performance. She had a peachy-brown base, with splotches of brown. Her mane is two shades of green. I want to give her green eyes, but I'm not sure. She's the tom-boy.
Her talent will be about nature, seeing as she's the rowdy earth pony.
There's supposed to be a fourth member, someone who's a different species. I've made multiple sketches, but I don't know what I want the fourth member to be. Any suggestions?

I’m currently making an mlp oc, and this helped me quite a bit, I’m trying to do research on stars and galaxies to come up with a cutie mark because my oc loves the night sky and does star gazing as a hobby
my oldest mlp oc is a light green pegasus with a red and white mane named, Pepper Mint. she used to have a red lighting bolt with a white stripe for her cutie mark. it was literally my first attempt but i kept that design for years. I recently took to redesigning all my pony ocs, including good old Pepper Mint. her cutie mark is now a simple tan map with a small red lightning bolt, instead of an X, she's a map maker by trade and her talent is being able to find things/find her way around any terrain. She's very observant and has a great memory
I designed mine and my friends cutiemarks (with their help ofcourse) and we came up with a shared symbol that looks a bit different by each one of us. For example: My best friend loves singing and is really into fashion and diamonds. Her cutiemark is a diamond heart with a glittery music note in front of it. Mine is a heart looking like the night sky and with a star in it and a magic mist going around it. This represends not only my love of stars and magic but also my shy and a bit closed off personality and my hard working one. Both of our cutiemarks have a heart with something in front of it and some waves around it (it sounds weird but my cutiemark will be shown later on my channel to explain it all).
So we based our cutiemarks on our own personalities and favorate traits together with our oc

I recently (today) found your channel and i was kinda suprised to see that you also have a deer as an oc! (But mine is female)! My oc has a pencil turning into a tree as a cutiemark (not moving) due to the fact that she owns a diary/scetchbook and often draws or writes in it at the place she loves most - the forest. That doesn't mean she's based on fluttershy, because she doesn't do too well with animals... aka most animals hate her. She is shy though, and often spends time alone. Most drawings i have of her is a teen/filly. Her name is unclear, but i just call her Rogue.
My character's an alicorn, and I have a well thought out reason for it, but I won't go through it in this comment.
Anyway, she has a cutie mark that has two meanings, and isn't immediately obvious. Her cm is a star with Saturn-like rings around it that have s hint of paint splatters. As well as two little drops of paint around it.
The star and the rings represent her ability to go through space and different universes, also representing a black hole. While the rings go in different directions, shows that she can be rather confusing but adaptable to change.
Her cutie mark has two meanings, space, and also her love for art.
She's a very good artist, and draws all the time, the paint splatters on her cutie mark represent that.
She often paints out her plans of creating different universes, how she's going to do things, heck even plan how she's going to do an art piece.
If you can't tell, she's the princess of space and universes. And is the protector of space. Protecting ponies from any asteroids, meteorites, or any supernovas occurring. She is also the cause of meteor showers, and brings this event every year.
This makes me wanna work on my first OC ever 😅 i haven't been in the pony community since high-school so it isn't my current goal for my future in starting animations, BUT being my first OC with a really strong story towards her creation, gotta keep giving her some love ❤
