Regarding Sapphire Shores, and her lack of Cutie Mark: This is something that gets brought up a fair bit here in the comments, and instead of responding to everyone individually asking about this, I figured I'd make a master post about my thoughts on it here xD In my opinion, the reason why she doesn't have a cutie mark in the show is almost certainly due to an animation error on the behalf of the show staff (Look, I can make rhymes!). In the episode she appears in, she's almost always wearing something over the area where her cutie mark would be. As an animator, you wouldn't ever have to come up with a cutie mark for her as long as she wore something over it. Now of course, there was a scene where we would have been able to see it, and alas, it was not there... Again, I feel this is nothing more than an animation error. We have not been introduced to adult ponies without cutie marks in the show, and this event in the episode, had it been intentional, would have more than likely received some attention ;p.
I don't think so, remember when the CMC tried to help Gabby (a griffon) get a cm? They did find out that she was also meant to help others, but she never got an actual cm.
Exactly "CM" (Cutie Mark) Gabby is a griffon and not a pony, they found what she was good at, but she never got an actual mark. So I don't think it's possible for a non-pony to get one :)
I would LOVE it, other shows talking about cutie marks would be cool too, like the scene in loud house "for bros about to rock", Luna would tell Linkin and Clide her CUTIE MARK story.
One thing we've never seen in the show is someone getting their cutie mark _by chance._ They're always doing _something_ when it appears, which is why I don't believe that this is so much fate as it is a pony recognizing what they're good at and accepting it as their chosen thing to do in life. Now, I know people will bring up Diamond Tiara and the fact that she didn't know what her mark meant, and to that I'll challenge that not only does it not change my theory, but it only adds to the proof of it being right. If you'll indulge me a bit with a little headcanoning: off screen, while she was growing up in a rich household, Diamond probably ordered the staff around a lot and they of course obeyed because they want to stay employed, then her school life started and she found that she could do the same to her classmates and she ended up liking that power and decided, "yep, this is how it always should be" and BAM, she gets a Diamond Tiara cutie mark on her butt. A symbol of her [almost] royal heritage and the kind of power that she's used to holding over others. Giving orders/delegating was just so natural to her that she never considered it a talent until that fateful episode. Trouble Shoes, however, simply _misinterpreted_ his cutie mark. When Trouble Shoes looked at his cutie mark, he saw the upside-down horseshoe and didn't exactly misinterpret it in the way you might think. An upside-down horseshoe _is_ unlucky, since all the luck will drain out of the shoe if it's hung curve up. However, to look at his cutie mark as a symbol of _luck,_ rather than something you'd just... find/associate with a rodeo, is where he totally dropped the ba--err--lasso, here. I would also like to point out that Trouble Shoes seems to have some quiet anxiety, for he was doing just fine until that symbol appeared, then his life became a hot mess not due to the mark but the negative association brought on by his misinterpretation of what it actually was/represented. As someone with quiet anxiety, I can confirm that this is 100% true. I often cause a lot of my own problems because I'm always expecting the worst, which more often than not, forces it to happen and I think Trouble's no different in that regard.
Well in the case of Diamond Tiara, she states that she's always known what it meant, but she was using it to do bad things for the sake of her status. What the CMC did was show her that it could be used to help people, and that she could be persuasive instead of bossy.

I have a theory. Once a pony realised what makes them special, a cutie mark appears. That way a sort of magic is unlocked. A cutie mark is the magic being displayed on your flank.
My opinion on cutie marks could become a video all its own. At the least, I'd add a bit about the clues that seemingly point toward WHY a pony gets the cutie mark they end up with (I may write a tl;dr response on that eventually - not that anyone will read it, ha!). There seems to be a very specific answer... Sidenote, I see you actually made the pupils of the eyes work! Now that's finished though, the eyelids on your personal OC are just slightly creepy. Strangely though, on Color Wonder's model it just seemed a perfectly natural expression! Wonder why?

Maybe it was Twilight's instinct reforming herself? There are times that we kind of know what we're meant to do without even actually figuring it out fully in our own heads, like a reflex. Kind of like how I think that the origin of cutie marks is as old as pony history itself. The ponies just sort of know what to do without the prior knowledge of when or what the talent is. It's destined for them to get that specific mark that makes them special in the first place.
It's interesting to note that sometimes cutie marks don't seem to have any visible connection with a pony's talent. Like Sunburst, who's cutie mark represents his name but is not really connected to his talent. Which led to him not doing so well in magic school, as he did not realize his talent was for magical study rather than it's use.
I realised watching it this time. Celestia would likely have to move the sun around for a lot of the day. IDK what I think makes cutie marks, I just wanted to mention that.
Good video ;) One thing that kinda bugs me about cutie marks is the fact that it is apparently predetermined what a pony’s cutie mark will be. We see in the cutie re-mark that everyone got their cutie mark eventually, even though they lived a very different live. Not to forget magical mystery cure where the word cutie-mark is basically synonymous with destiny, so I guess those two things are linked. When a pony swaps the cutie mark with another pony, they also swap their roles in life, even if they are a bad fit for that role. Implying that they also carry the destiny of a pony. But it makes you wonder, what if ponies swap their cutie marks that could actually handle the role of the other? For example, would Sunset become a princess if she were to swap cutie marks with Twilight?
+Tricky Fox In Magical Mystery Cure, the swap of the cutiemarks was done in a specific sequence that will provide each swapped pony the worst, most miserable life posible. Look at this sequence for example: Rarity + Baloons (Pinkie´s cutiemark): Instead of using clothes and accesories to show her artistic sense to others, she will use her talent directly as a singer and actress to "perform"; making others happy while getting all the attention and apraise she always wanted. Pinkie + Thunder (Rainbow´s cutiemark): Her jumping/floating/helicopter engineer ingenuty [S1E05] will have a better porpouse than "fun", as she will also be able to control the weather. She was already a member of the weather team on "Winter Wrap Up" [S1E11] (something unusual for an earth pony); with this job she will feel as someone who is a fundamental part of the comunity´s well being [pretty much the same as a party organizer, as she "gives sunshine over you"]. Rainbow Dash + Apples (Applejack´s cutiemark): Zap Apples! [this was easy] She will have the same pride on her apple sweeping (knocking up the apples on an entire acre of the orchard with the "Buc"caneer Blaze on 10 seconds flat), that Applejack has with her more patience growing and applebucking [trading quantity for speed]. Applejack + Butterflies (Fluttershy´s cutiemark): Applejack is already good handling animals even without the ability to understand them; she is also a good caretaker [even obsesive at some times]; all good qualities that will ensure she will be an excelent animal wisperer. She will enjoy being sorrounded by them, as she will see them as "her family", instead of a bunch of pets or friends (something not even Fluttershy can say). Fluttershy + Diamonds (Rarity´s cutiemark): Aside from her uncanny ability to sew extremely tiny clothes WITHOUT telekinesis [S4E16]; she already has a well developed "culture" on high fashion and tea parties; plus being a natural beauty for modeling [S1E20]. Even if she does not use it for "design" or "performance"; she could become a good manager for other artists [bringing out the best of them], by using her empathy and sincerity to gain their hearts and convince them to do what it is "the best for them" (like with the Red Dragon in "Dragonshy" [S1E07]).
I don't think Celestia is behind them since Ponies have been around prior to her and Luna taking over. Keep in mind that Twilight's cutie mark looks like the Tree of Harmony and that is DEFINITELY older than these two. I do hope the question of "Who created this world" is answered eventually because I always question that in any fantasy setting.

My question is actually could it be possible to have your cutie mark change colors? 'cause I don't want people thinking my OC is a Mary Sue or something? I just wanted to know if it's okay....

I personally believe that celestia is the one creating and making the cutie marks while Luna is responsible for the names of the ponies(all though this was proven wrong when princess cadence and shining armor named flurry heart at the train station, but just go with it XDD) and they later give the child back to the parents. Celestia then keeps the cutie mark of the child till they realize that that certain thing is what makes them special, celestia then give the cutie mark that was chosen for that pony at birth. Or at least that is what happens in the equestria my OCs are set in. One of my OCs, frostfall, she doesn't have a cutie mark. When celestia and Luna where naming her and such she had nothing special so celestia couldn't give her a mark to represent her talents. She was just so bland. So when celestia and Luna gave her back to her parents they told them that she would never receive a cutie mark, great sorrow filled the house eventually frostfall was trying to get her cutie mark and find out how she was special, her parents had to tell her the bad news..frostfall cried and cried knowing she wasn't special, her tears became solid icicles on her face (she lived really high in the clouds so the cold froze them, but they stayed there even when it wasn't cold symbolizing that her sadness was eternal wherever she went…)
Bunny Burst then did celestia give starswirl his cutie mark too and the other ponies of myth? I think your theory has been debunked because of the latest episode since starswirl was celestia and lunas teacher
3:37 this could also represent how she is happier (represented by the colour yellow which is associated with happiness) then her siblings (represented by th colour blue which is associated with sadness)
If you read the diary of the 2 sisters you would find out that when they first became rulers of Equestria they didn't have cutie marks & made comments about the fact that other ponies around them did. This is an obvious point that even when Celestia & Luna were fillies cutie marks existed.
I don't think that Celestia creates EVERY cutiemark from scratch when a pony gets it because she couldn't get the time. Think about the amount of young ponies in equestria, how many of those would be getting their cutiemark at the same time? It's like the saying "one born every minute". Unless Celestia has the power to alter time, I don't think she could give ponies cutiemarks each time somepony gets it, though I do think she has something to do with it.
My "cutie mark": ❓ The exact details like color might change, but a question mark sums me up perfectly. I'm a thinker, and ask a lot of questions no one really has answers to, and I don't know my purpose in life, or if I even have a specific destiny or purpose.
We have seen adult ponies who lack cutie marks. They aren't given much screentime, and nothing is ever made of their lack, but they do exist. It's possible they are just animation errors, but I think that's a bit unlikely. The two I can think of off the top of my head are Sapphire Shores (unless she was just wearing pants that were the same colour as her coat, which knowing her exaggerated, glam sense of fashion, is possible) and the animal wrangler pony who was holding the orthros in Trade Ya. These two ponies were fairly important to the episodes they are in, having an effect on the plot, so I don't see how such an oversight in design could have been made. Unless, it wasn't a design error at all and it really is possible to reach adulthood without having a moment of discovery. Supposing a pony has a lot of personal insecurity, and they don't go out and try things, or they doubt their abilities too much to be sure what they're meant to do. A cutie mark is meant to represent a pony's destiny, their future, and if you have a particularly bleak outlook on life and don't think you HAVE a future, well ... maybe your cutie mark can't appear, because you're too depressed to have that hopeful moment. Keep in mind also that a pony's magic seems to be tied to their emotional well-being and the love between them and those around them. I can go off on a whole other topic about how love affects them magically, but the point here is this: it's possible that a severely low self-image or a lack of love in their lives can degrade a pony's personal magic so badly that they're physically incapable of manifesting a cutie mark. Here's a question that I would LOVE to have explored: is a pony destined to have one cutie mark, and that is the only one they're capable of getting? What if in a time-travelling situation, they were put on the path of glass-blowing instead of blacksmithing? Would they learn to glass-blow, never try blacksmithing, and get a glass-blowing cutie mark instead of the blacksmithing one they were going to get? Or forget time-travel; what if a pony just never tried that thing they were 'supposed' to? There could be outside forces, like peers or family pushing a young pony away from what they really want to do, so they force themselves to learn and to like some other skill. Have they changed themselves enough that their cutie mark changed, or can it not change?

If Celestia was in charge of cutie marks, then what about the time before Celestia? Ponies as a race have been around far longer than she has as an individual, and besides, wouldn't it reflect ill on her to change and alter a pony's appearance and, subsequently, their lives via a suspicious butt-tattoo? Why would she intentionally cause Trouble Shoes such grievances and tribulations, isn't she supposedly a benevolent ruler? My personal theory is, that a cutiemark stems from the inherent magic residing inside every pony - as we saw in the finale, the mane six still got their cutiemarks despite missing the rain boom, and though Pinkie's might be a dubious affair in the Sombra-scenario, the others were shown to still have their old marks. We already know that every pony has magic, since Tirek didn't just target unicorns, so why wouldn't this magic be to blame for a strange mark -magically- appearing on a pony's flank at the moment of great, personal discovery.
Considering my OC is half Deer... No CM for her xD Though honestly it really annoys me when people make nonsense CMs, ripoff show CMs, or have really overworked CMs. Or if they don't have one for no reason than "just because". But I do kinda like the idea of Celestia churning the CMs out for hours on end, though I wouldn't think she applies them herself. I'm thinking more on the lines of a "bank" in a different dimension or space where they sit until the perfect pony pops up and gets the one that's right for them. Probably doesn't make sense, but ehhhh....
I think that it's simply fate, combined with magic is what determines a cutie mark for each respective pony. Remember, nothing ever happens without reason.
My oc's cutie mark is a pink heart being drawn with a pencil that is colored in purple with another pencil. It represents her love and passion for art and drawing. It also represents that ponies all have a basic life out line like growing up working starting some form of family growing old retiring and eventually there end but that we can fill in the blanks with any colors and patters we want. You can choose your morals, what you want to do in life, whom if you want to start your family with, and so much more. Even though the way your life is destined to go is out of your control you can make the journey your own.

I think Cutie Mark are definitely what make into the Show and the Fan base, I think it's very interesting on how they really work as bring up a character's trait or personality!! Through on how much they mention them, They seem very important to everypony!! Though for making your own OC, It can take some time to think of an Cutie Mark :P But other then that, Great Video and Collab with Color Wonder!! :D
well now I think I've decided on a cutie mark for my oc..... melting rainbow music notes... yup.... she has a personality of many colors... she loves singing and just music in general... and her mind is slowly melting into insanity..... yup... that's how I feel.., right now...
I think it would be cool if cutie marks could change as the pony grows as a person. I also always joke that it would be great for toy marketing XD kids would buy a bunch of versions of the same pony with a different mark on its butt. Jokes aside, I think it would send a good message to kids that they don't need to feel stuck with one habit or talent. There is always room to grow and discover new things about yourself :)
twilight says that no pony can't give cutie marks. celestia can't possibly do that. cutie marks are like that hidden talent inside them that they now free once they understand.
I liked hearing the two theorists sort of disagreeing on cutie marks. It showed to me that even if two people disagree on something, they don't have to get into a heated argument about it. I don't normally do that but a lot of other people do and I loved seeing you two work together ok a video, even if you had two different theories.

I think you are right but the reason why celestia was there was to help Twilight realise her destiny as a princess. She didn't make twilight an alicorn, Twilight did it herself. But it wouldn't have happened if Celestia wasn't there.
My favorite cutie marks in the whole series (I've only seen fim, I grew up in the 2010s) has to be the cutie mark Crusaders marks, because they were always trying new things, desperately trying to figure out their place in the world, only to end up helping other ponies understand their marks every adventure, and now their own marks represnt helping others to understand and love their cutie marks as individuals, as cutie marks are representation of personality and intrests. I think the Crusaders marks coming to represent them as a group of ponies who's talent is helping others understand their cutie marks was a really good idea in the show, and on top of that, it let the cutie mark Crusaders remain the cutie mark Crusaders even with their cutie marks; which I certainly remember hoping for back when I was watching the show for the first time about the same age as the group back then. I think they're an inspiring group, and on a deeper analytical level, they could be seen as the "therapist friend" in a way, as they listen to others, understand almost everypony's individual struggles with identity crisis and low self esteem and time and time again they help struggling, depressed ponies to see their own individual self worth, to gain self esteem and self understanding. I really hope if they are reappearing characters in future generations or additional fim content as grown up ponies that they later become Alicorns, the Alicorn trio representing listening to others, spreading self love and helping others, but that's my own personal view, because I think they'd be essential in keeping up morale across equestria
Like Pinkie Pie? I mean, technically her personality changed before she got her cutie mark, but the Sonic Rainboom got her her Cutie Mark AND changed her personality, so I would count it as her personality changing with her Cutie Mark.

cutie marks entitle who that pony is and their talent personality but they also hold secrets within them like what if the cutie mark gave you the wrong and horrid fate take luna for example her fate was with the moon but... later with the moon holding a few hours of sky. while celestia and the sun hold 24 hours of sky.. plus the cutie mark most of the time match their name E.g. rainbow dash has a lightning bolt representing dash and it's rainbow coloured

It's hard to say if the cutie mark rule really accurately represents everypony's choices abilities and personality. As a child growing up with autism I never really had any talents, or friends, or hobbies, all I cared about at the time was watching cartoons and playing video games. But clearly i'm well past the age of childhood and never discovered any sort of talent or thing I was good at when I was young. But since the default rule seems to be you get your cutie mark during childhood whether you're ready or not would mine per say just have been a video game joystick since I never really wanted to do anything with my life other than play video games? I can't really say the cutie mark rule would really accurately apply or work for everyone.

first off, if they didn't get there cutie marks at the same time, they still would've discovered it either way, but, twilight maybe could've still become Celestia's student, but not a *private* one. so, Celestia would've never sent her to Ponyville to meet the main five. rainbow would've gotten her cutie mark in a different way. her special talent isn't making rainbooms, it represents her love for racing and freedom. "The freedom was on beyond anything I ever felt, i liked it, ALOT!" -Rainbow. fluttershy would've fallen down in the big race still, but as she said: "You would've never guess, but when i was younger, i was very shy, and a very weak flyer." -Fluttershy. She wouldn't have been able to discover her special talent at that moment, but she would've still discovered it at a different time. Rarity's cutie mark not being able to be discovered at that moment, i dont think it would've affected anything, she would've still gotten it. Her special talent is finding gems with her horn. but she would've still lived in Ponyville. "Ah have never felt that homesick in my days as ah did right there" -Applejack. Applejack would'a still gotten her cutie mark, she was very homesick, and maybe she would've gotten her cutie mark a little after, because the rainboom wasn't there. she would'a still felt homesick and ended up running back home anyway. Now pinkie? the rainbow made her smile, but what would'a made her smile other then that? I have NOOO idea..
I believe cutiemarks to be a natural part of pony biology, perhaps even tied to their innate magic within. Yet perhaps it is something of a larger scale, a magic placed on ponykind as a whole in the far distant past though how or even by who would be uncertain. I will say I do not feel this someone would be princess Celestia, at least not from what the Journal of the Two Sister reveals. I see a cutiemark as a visual expression on a pony's great talent or skill, something they can be passionate about and see through until the end of their life. That it often comes through an act or realization, often both, in which a pony learns of themselves and who they are... admittingly I actually feel trouble shoes throws a wrench into the whole thing and makes this a less certain process, not something I fully agree with. Still because of this I do feel a cutiemark could be open for interpretation and that a pony could, possible, misunderstand what it is supposed to me. I remember a roleplay between myself and another involving Diamond Tiara and Princess Celestia, from before Crusaders of the Lost Mark, in which the filly goes to the princess in Canterlot from Ponyville to ask what her cutiemark means. Still, unless something should fundamentally change with a a pony later on a cutiemark should also fit them, their special talent being something they and enjoy and would be willing to spend their life doing. Unless something happens in their life where the begin to dislike, resent, or even hate what they used to love or enjoy. It becoming a talent they are good at but find they can't stand doing. Apart from such a situation I don't feel a pony would get a talent in something they don't want to do with their life or something they don't enjoy.
hey, I recently came up with the idea for a genetically engineered Griffin/Pegasus OC named Lantern Lite. since she was genetically engineered, she is unable to get a cutie mark ever. was this a good idea...? I dunno, I just want others perspectives on this idea I got.
If I were a pony, I feel it would have taken a long time for me to get my cutie mark, so long in fact that I would have given up hope. It wasn't until last year, when I was 15, that I discovered something I truly enjoy and believe I would be very good at, given more opportunities to practise, and that is acting as a director for plays, and has inspired me to finally decide what I'd most like to do when I'm older - be a well-known film and television director like my personal idol, Peter Jackson. However, for years I've been constantly changing what I'd want to do, and for a few years I was convinced I would be a great author. Maybe I would have gotten my cutie mark for writing, but who knows
I wanted to comment on Troubleshoes mark. While an upside down horseshoe isn't bad luck, it was thought that the luck inside would run out like water. Also, when I first saw them, I took it as a reference to puberty.
i agree with you when you say cutie marks are meant to show what the heart and soul of a pony is. i feel like cutie marks are what the pony was meant to be. it doesnt matter when they get their mark because if a filly was really good at something like art and got their mark then, but later discovered they had a passion for studying stars and finding new constellations, then their cutie mark would have less meaning to them and mislead others.
My OC's cutie mark symbolizes my love of fighting, and old style weaponry. Obviously, I'm a pretty good shot with a bow because of constant practice. It's REALLY important.
Could be xD, but I don't know if I'm convinced ;o. He's the embodiment of chaos, and I doubt that he would be one to be responsible for providing ponies some stability in a cutie mark that defines them x3
Personal theory - Ponies as we know them are, as a species, the half-breed cross between true horses (a la the Saddle Arabians) and changelings, and cutie marks are the last vestige of changeling transformation magic in them. In support of this, please note that the transformation event is marked by a flare of light, similar to the burst of flame when a changeling transforms. By this theory, it truly is the last little 'a-ha' moment that triggers the cutie marks' appearance, as that is when the subconscious mind identifies the pony's true heart's desire and emblazons it for all to see. The conscious mind need not be interviewed or informed during this process.
I remember when these were a subject of controversy, like some authoritarian cosmic force was mandating jobs. I think they're more like a magical high school counselor. Sometimes the advice is straightforward, and sometimes it's more ambiguous. And like a counselor's advice, it can be ignored. A pony was dragged by her face across the countryside and dropped off at a huge geode. Then she became a fashion designer. Also, they're not set in stone. They can be changed by tampering with history, or directly altered. Maybe if a young pony doesn't want to sweep floors, they can study hard and get some academic or STEM cutie mark instead of a push broom. There's probably nothing stopping a pony named Clean Sweep from doing something else if it brings them joy, but perhaps they simply slip into the role because because for them individually, it's an easy path, doesn't bother them, and evolutionary acceptance/expectations.
My OC's cutie mark is a dagger with a crescent moon inside and crossing a book. I'm not going into the whole thing about what it means, but cutie marks are also some times have a deeper meaning.
My main OC's cutie mark might've been created by Celestia. Because: as he was born, Celestia came and renamed him into Shadow Phoenix. And that's why he has a dark pheonix cutie mark. His cutie mark also describes his personality. Which is a shadowy kind of pony, dark.

Great video I reaaly like the Celestia theory. I have also seen your videos about creating an oc. But I am wondering if you have some tips in creating a cutie mark for your oc?
Personally, I've always considered a kind of mix between the to theories presented here. Celestia was the one who invented the magic to cause cutiemarks and then released it into the world after a few trials so she didn't have to personally monitor it every second of every day.

Well in my story I have it to where my main character had her cutie mark for the longest only for it to change at the end of her story. Now for the reason for this is a change in personalty, because when she first got her cutie mark it was through hatred and destruction. But as she saw through her hatred and realized the love she had for her friends was more important then her revenge and her true self shined through and so did her cutie mark.
my cutie mark is a scroll with a question mark (the dot on the question mark is a heart) my cutie mark represents my love of reading,writing, art or anything in relation to paper. I do lots of things, but what I enjoy most is creating. and paper is the universal "blank slate" to create upon. I personally think that cutie marks are related to the magic of the equestrian world. and the magic that controls fate give a pony the cutie mark that would best suite their personality, passion and destiny. this seems to work in the world of equestria. Ponies are given a cutie mark at the right time to match their personality and better the world around them, thust making a happy pony. trouble shoes was confused and thought that this destiny was to be clumsy and nothing more, and thust bettered nopony and was unhappy. when he figured out how to better himself and other, he became a happier pony.
I agree with tyandaga, that Celestia gives everyone the cutie marks in her free time, because, I also believe that after a pony is born, celestia visits them and tells the parents the name (this theory was not mine, but I agree with it). This is because the name matches the cutie mark, and if that is right, it would just make sense that Celestia gives them their name and cutie mark, because maybe, she can see future.
I believe that fate coincides with random chance, that people have multiple alternate destinies. Along with there being anchored points of destiny, where an event must occur, but it doesn't fully mater who it is that causes or enacts the event.
I think cutiemarks should represent the talent, the personality and maybe even the flaws of the pony. And they shouldn't just represent the name of the pony. For example: My OC's name is Blue Feathers. (guess you can all guess what she looks like...) But her Cutiemark isn't just a simple blue feather. Blue Feathers is basically the pony version of me. She has the same personality, talents and flaws. Her cutiemark represents two theatre-masks(one smiling, one frowning) held together by a white ribbon with music notes drawn on in. This cutiemark represents my love for acting and singing (talent). The smiling mask slightly covers the frowning mask, meaning that I mostly show my happy side to the world (personality). The white ribbon represents the help I need to keep it together sometimes. Because when I'm losing it, my emotions are all over the place (flaws). And that's how I think a cutiemark should work.
My ponies oc has a shared cutie mark with her bestfriend which is a pink heart with white wings wrapped around it that symbolises that she is protective, strong minded and stubborn. The other pony has a dark Purple Heart with black wings spreading out from each side to symbolis that she is care free, wild and mischievous. :33

I think cutie marks is their inner selves. I think like Luna said to Applebloom, that a cutie mark is just a symbol of who you are. Nothing more. I believe this to be true. I also think that cutie marks happen when they express their true selves. I made my first oc and I struggle with this. I've spent 3 years trying to find the right cutie mark to symbol who he is. in which he had to be pushed to his limits to realize what he purpose is. I believe in that is a good way for an older pony to not get their cutie mark right away. Putting that aside they are a symbol like Luna said. I don't think Celestia has the power to create cutie marks its themselves. Trouble Shoes got his when he was having fun at the rodeo whom slipped and fell when he revived his. this episode got downed alot for it. I think taking a closer look he could misjudge his cutie mark taking it as a bad Oman. the cutie mark crusaders helped him to see what he was born to do. Be a clown with the mishaps. I think that is actually quite clever. It happened when he missed up and he was laughed at because it was funny. He thought it had brought him bad luck, yet I believe he was blaming himself to be a bad luck and that cutie mark showed it. So my two theories right there. I have plenty more about cutie marks and this is the exact reason why I have trouble trying to come up with a cutie mark that fits my oc's. A symbol of who they are as a character nothing more.
Her mane is teal blue fading into light blue-ish green. While His is Black but the style of Luna's mane. They both have nightmare forms. Pheonixs is a dark red alicorn with bat like wings and a black nightmare moon like mane. While Shadows is a black bat pony with a dark blue nightmare moon mane
Regarding Sapphire Shores, and her lack of Cutie Mark:
This is something that gets brought up a fair bit here in the comments, and instead of responding to everyone individually asking about this, I figured I'd make a master post about my thoughts on it here xD
In my opinion, the reason why she doesn't have a cutie mark in the show is almost certainly due to an animation error on the behalf of the show staff (Look, I can make rhymes!). In the episode she appears in, she's almost always wearing something over the area where her cutie mark would be. As an animator, you wouldn't ever have to come up with a cutie mark for her as long as she wore something over it. Now of course, there was a scene where we would have been able to see it, and alas, it was not there...
Again, I feel this is nothing more than an animation error. We have not been introduced to adult ponies without cutie marks in the show, and this event in the episode, had it been intentional, would have more than likely received some attention ;p.

One thing we've never seen in the show is someone getting their cutie mark _by chance._ They're always doing _something_ when it appears, which is why I don't believe that this is so much fate as it is a pony recognizing what they're good at and accepting it as their chosen thing to do in life.
Now, I know people will bring up Diamond Tiara and the fact that she didn't know what her mark meant, and to that I'll challenge that not only does it not change my theory, but it only adds to the proof of it being right.
If you'll indulge me a bit with a little headcanoning: off screen, while she was growing up in a rich household, Diamond probably ordered the staff around a lot and they of course obeyed because they want to stay employed, then her school life started and she found that she could do the same to her classmates and she ended up liking that power and decided, "yep, this is how it always should be" and BAM, she gets a Diamond Tiara cutie mark on her butt. A symbol of her [almost] royal heritage and the kind of power that she's used to holding over others. Giving orders/delegating was just so natural to her that she never considered it a talent until that fateful episode.
Trouble Shoes, however, simply _misinterpreted_ his cutie mark.
When Trouble Shoes looked at his cutie mark, he saw the upside-down horseshoe and didn't exactly misinterpret it in the way you might think. An upside-down horseshoe _is_ unlucky, since all the luck will drain out of the shoe if it's hung curve up. However, to look at his cutie mark as a symbol of _luck,_ rather than something you'd just... find/associate with a rodeo, is where he totally dropped the ba--err--lasso, here. I would also like to point out that Trouble Shoes seems to have some quiet anxiety, for he was doing just fine until that symbol appeared, then his life became a hot mess not due to the mark but the negative association brought on by his misinterpretation of what it actually was/represented. As someone with quiet anxiety, I can confirm that this is 100% true. I often cause a lot of my own problems because I'm always expecting the worst, which more often than not, forces it to happen and I think Trouble's no different in that regard.
Well in the case of Diamond Tiara, she states that she's always known what it meant, but she was using it to do bad things for the sake of her status. What the CMC did was show her that it could be used to help people, and that she could be persuasive instead of bossy.

At the least, I'd add a bit about the clues that seemingly point toward WHY a pony gets the cutie mark they end up with (I may write a tl;dr response on that eventually - not that anyone will read it, ha!). There seems to be a very specific answer...
Sidenote, I see you actually made the pupils of the eyes work! Now that's finished though, the eyelids on your personal OC are just slightly creepy. Strangely though, on Color Wonder's model it just seemed a perfectly natural expression! Wonder why?

Maybe it was Twilight's instinct reforming herself? There are times that we kind of know what we're meant to do without even actually figuring it out fully in our own heads, like a reflex. Kind of like how I think that the origin of cutie marks is as old as pony history itself. The ponies just sort of know what to do without the prior knowledge of when or what the talent is. It's destined for them to get that specific mark that makes them special in the first place.
It's interesting to note that sometimes cutie marks don't seem to have any visible connection with a pony's talent. Like Sunburst, who's cutie mark represents his name but is not really connected to his talent. Which led to him not doing so well in magic school, as he did not realize his talent was for magical study rather than it's use.
I realised watching it this time. Celestia would likely have to move the sun around for a lot of the day. IDK what I think makes cutie marks, I just wanted to mention that.

life, even if they are a bad fit for that role. Implying that they also carry
the destiny of a pony. But it makes you wonder, what if ponies swap their cutie
marks that could actually handle the role of the other? For example, would
Sunset become a princess if she were to swap cutie marks with Twilight?

In Magical Mystery Cure, the swap of the cutiemarks was done in a specific sequence that will provide each swapped pony the worst, most miserable life posible.
Look at this sequence for example:
Rarity + Baloons (Pinkie´s cutiemark):
Instead of using clothes and accesories to show her artistic sense to others, she will use her talent directly as a singer and actress to "perform"; making others happy while getting all the attention and apraise she always wanted.
Pinkie + Thunder (Rainbow´s cutiemark):
Her jumping/floating/helicopter engineer ingenuty [S1E05] will have a better porpouse than "fun", as she will also be able to control the weather.
She was already a member of the weather team on "Winter Wrap Up" [S1E11] (something unusual for an earth pony); with this job she will feel as someone who is a fundamental part of the comunity´s well being [pretty much the same as a party organizer, as she "gives sunshine over you"].
Rainbow Dash + Apples (Applejack´s cutiemark):
Zap Apples! [this was easy]
She will have the same pride on her apple sweeping (knocking up the apples on an entire acre of the orchard with the "Buc"caneer Blaze on 10 seconds flat), that Applejack has with her more patience growing and applebucking [trading quantity for speed].
Applejack + Butterflies (Fluttershy´s cutiemark):
Applejack is already good handling animals even without the ability to understand them; she is also a good caretaker [even obsesive at some times]; all good qualities that will ensure she will be an excelent animal wisperer. She will enjoy being sorrounded by them, as she will see them as "her family", instead of a bunch of pets or friends (something not even Fluttershy can say).
Fluttershy + Diamonds (Rarity´s cutiemark):
Aside from her uncanny ability to sew extremely tiny clothes WITHOUT telekinesis [S4E16]; she already has a well developed "culture" on high fashion and tea parties; plus being a natural beauty for modeling [S1E20].
Even if she does not use it for "design" or "performance"; she could become a good manager for other artists [bringing out the best of them], by using her empathy and sincerity to gain their hearts and convince them to do what it is "the best for them" (like with the Red Dragon in "Dragonshy" [S1E07]).

I don't think Celestia is behind them since Ponies have been around prior to her and Luna taking over. Keep in mind that Twilight's cutie mark looks like the Tree of Harmony and that is DEFINITELY older than these two. I do hope the question of "Who created this world" is answered eventually because I always question that in any fantasy setting.

I personally believe that celestia is the one creating and making the cutie marks while Luna is responsible for the names of the ponies(all though this was proven wrong when princess cadence and shining armor named flurry heart at the train station, but just go with it XDD) and they later give the child back to the parents. Celestia then keeps the cutie mark of the child till they realize that that certain thing is what makes them special, celestia then give the cutie mark that was chosen for that pony at birth. Or at least that is what happens in the equestria my OCs are set in. One of my OCs, frostfall, she doesn't have a cutie mark. When celestia and Luna where naming her and such she had nothing special so celestia couldn't give her a mark to represent her talents. She was just so bland. So when celestia and Luna gave her back to her parents they told them that she would never receive a cutie mark, great sorrow filled the house eventually frostfall was trying to get her cutie mark and find out how she was special, her parents had to tell her the bad news..frostfall cried and cried knowing she wasn't special, her tears became solid icicles on her face (she lived really high in the clouds so the cold froze them, but they stayed there even when it wasn't cold symbolizing that her sadness was eternal wherever she went…)

If you read the diary of the 2 sisters you would find out that when they first became rulers of Equestria they didn't have cutie marks & made comments about the fact that other ponies around them did. This is an obvious point that even when Celestia & Luna were fillies cutie marks existed.
I don't think that Celestia creates EVERY cutiemark from scratch when a pony gets it because she couldn't get the time. Think about the amount of young ponies in equestria, how many of those would be getting their cutiemark at the same time? It's like the saying "one born every minute". Unless Celestia has the power to alter time, I don't think she could give ponies cutiemarks each time somepony gets it, though I do think she has something to do with it.
My oc's CM is piece of creased paper with few splashes of paint and unreadable text on top. That represents her personality and talent quite well

The exact details like color might change, but a question mark sums me up perfectly. I'm a thinker, and ask a lot of questions no one really has answers to, and I don't know my purpose in life, or if I even have a specific destiny or purpose.
I wonder if the Cutie map would - during the season 7 premiere or finale - Summon Starlight & the CMC to solve a cutie mark problem.
We have seen adult ponies who lack cutie marks. They aren't given much screentime, and nothing is ever made of their lack, but they do exist. It's possible they are just animation errors, but I think that's a bit unlikely. The two I can think of off the top of my head are Sapphire Shores (unless she was just wearing pants that were the same colour as her coat, which knowing her exaggerated, glam sense of fashion, is possible) and the animal wrangler pony who was holding the orthros in Trade Ya. These two ponies were fairly important to the episodes they are in, having an effect on the plot, so I don't see how such an oversight in design could have been made. Unless, it wasn't a design error at all and it really is possible to reach adulthood without having a moment of discovery.
Supposing a pony has a lot of personal insecurity, and they don't go out and try things, or they doubt their abilities too much to be sure what they're meant to do. A cutie mark is meant to represent a pony's destiny, their future, and if you have a particularly bleak outlook on life and don't think you HAVE a future, well ... maybe your cutie mark can't appear, because you're too depressed to have that hopeful moment. Keep in mind also that a pony's magic seems to be tied to their emotional well-being and the love between them and those around them. I can go off on a whole other topic about how love affects them magically, but the point here is this: it's possible that a severely low self-image or a lack of love in their lives can degrade a pony's personal magic so badly that they're physically incapable of manifesting a cutie mark.
Here's a question that I would LOVE to have explored: is a pony destined to have one cutie mark, and that is the only one they're capable of getting? What if in a time-travelling situation, they were put on the path of glass-blowing instead of blacksmithing? Would they learn to glass-blow, never try blacksmithing, and get a glass-blowing cutie mark instead of the blacksmithing one they were going to get? Or forget time-travel; what if a pony just never tried that thing they were 'supposed' to? There could be outside forces, like peers or family pushing a young pony away from what they really want to do, so they force themselves to learn and to like some other skill. Have they changed themselves enough that their cutie mark changed, or can it not change?

If Celestia was in charge of cutie marks, then what about the time before Celestia? Ponies as a race have been around far longer than she has as an individual, and besides, wouldn't it reflect ill on her to change and alter a pony's appearance and, subsequently, their lives via a suspicious butt-tattoo? Why would she intentionally cause Trouble Shoes such grievances and tribulations, isn't she supposedly a benevolent ruler?
My personal theory is, that a cutiemark stems from the inherent magic residing inside every pony - as we saw in the finale, the mane six still got their cutiemarks despite missing the rain boom, and though Pinkie's might be a dubious affair in the Sombra-scenario, the others were shown to still have their old marks. We already know that every pony has magic, since Tirek didn't just target unicorns, so why wouldn't this magic be to blame for a strange mark -magically- appearing on a pony's flank at the moment of great, personal discovery.

Though honestly it really annoys me when people make nonsense CMs, ripoff show CMs, or have really overworked CMs. Or if they don't have one for no reason than "just because".

My oc's cutie mark is a pink heart being drawn with a pencil that is colored in purple with another pencil. It represents her love and passion for art and drawing. It also represents that ponies all have a basic life out line like growing up working starting some form of family growing old retiring and eventually there end but that we can fill in the blanks with any colors and patters we want. You can choose your morals, what you want to do in life, whom if you want to start your family with, and so much more. Even though the way your life is destined to go is out of your control you can make the journey your own.

because it is a reflection of me, I don't have a special talent...
I think it would be cool if cutie marks could change as the pony grows as a person. I also always joke that it would be great for toy marketing XD kids would buy a bunch of versions of the same pony with a different mark on its butt. Jokes aside, I think it would send a good message to kids that they don't need to feel stuck with one habit or talent. There is always room to grow and discover new things about yourself :)
twilight says that no pony can't give cutie marks. celestia can't possibly do that. cutie marks are like that hidden talent inside them that they now free once they understand.
I liked hearing the two theorists sort of disagreeing on cutie marks. It showed to me that even if two people disagree on something, they don't have to get into a heated argument about it. I don't normally do that but a lot of other people do and I loved seeing you two work together ok a video, even if you had two different theories.

I think you are right but the reason why celestia was there was to help Twilight realise her destiny as a princess. She didn't make twilight an alicorn, Twilight did it herself. But it wouldn't have happened if Celestia wasn't there.
My favorite cutie marks in the whole series (I've only seen fim, I grew up in the 2010s) has to be the cutie mark Crusaders marks, because they were always trying new things, desperately trying to figure out their place in the world, only to end up helping other ponies understand their marks every adventure, and now their own marks represnt helping others to understand and love their cutie marks as individuals, as cutie marks are representation of personality and intrests.
I think the Crusaders marks coming to represent them as a group of ponies who's talent is helping others understand their cutie marks was a really good idea in the show, and on top of that, it let the cutie mark Crusaders remain the cutie mark Crusaders even with their cutie marks; which I certainly remember hoping for back when I was watching the show for the first time about the same age as the group back then.
I think they're an inspiring group, and on a deeper analytical level, they could be seen as the "therapist friend" in a way, as they listen to others, understand almost everypony's individual struggles with identity crisis and low self esteem and time and time again they help struggling, depressed ponies to see their own individual self worth, to gain self esteem and self understanding.
I really hope if they are reappearing characters in future generations or additional fim content as grown up ponies that they later become Alicorns, the Alicorn trio representing listening to others, spreading self love and helping others, but that's my own personal view, because I think they'd be essential in keeping up morale across equestria
What if someone got a cutie mark, then their personality changed, so their marks don't portray them well?
Like Pinkie Pie? I mean, technically her personality changed before she got her cutie mark, but the Sonic Rainboom got her her Cutie Mark AND changed her personality, so I would count it as her personality changing with her Cutie Mark.

On a side note, if you want to find an interesting place to put a cutie mark (in the case your OC is a non-pony OC like mine), try an article of clothing. take luna for example her fate was with the moon but... later with the moon holding a few hours of sky. while celestia and the sun hold 24 hours of sky.. plus the cutie mark most of the time match their name E.g. rainbow dash has a lightning bolt representing dash and it's rainbow coloured

It's hard to say if the cutie mark rule really accurately represents everypony's choices abilities and personality.
As a child growing up with autism I never really had any talents, or friends, or hobbies, all I cared about at the time was watching cartoons and playing video games. But clearly i'm well past the age of childhood and never discovered any sort of talent or thing I was good at when I was young.
But since the default rule seems to be you get your cutie mark during childhood whether you're ready or not would mine per say just have been a video game joystick since I never really wanted to do anything with my life other than play video games?
I can't really say the cutie mark rule would really accurately apply or work for everyone.

first off, if they didn't get there cutie marks at the same time, they still would've discovered it either way, but, twilight maybe could've still become Celestia's student, but not a *private* one. so, Celestia would've never sent her to Ponyville to meet the main five. rainbow would've gotten her cutie mark in a different way. her special talent isn't making rainbooms, it represents her love for racing and freedom. "The freedom was on beyond anything I ever felt, i liked it, ALOT!" -Rainbow. fluttershy would've fallen down in the big race still, but as she said: "You would've never guess, but when i was younger, i was very shy, and a very weak flyer." -Fluttershy. She wouldn't have been able to discover her special talent at that moment, but she would've still discovered it at a different time. Rarity's cutie mark not being able to be discovered at that moment, i dont think it would've affected anything, she would've still gotten it. Her special talent is finding gems with her horn. but she would've still lived in Ponyville. "Ah have never felt that homesick in my days as ah did right there" -Applejack. Applejack would'a still gotten her cutie mark, she was very homesick, and maybe she would've gotten her cutie mark a little after, because the rainboom wasn't there. she would'a still felt homesick and ended up running back home anyway. Now pinkie? the rainbow made her smile, but what would'a made her smile other then that? I have NOOO idea..
There is no way Celestia controls cutiemarks. She earned her cutiemark just like any other pony.
So it's probably magic.

For my oc, her cutie mark is a Pencil and a Paint brush crossed together representing her passion for art and writing, as well as her talent
I believe cutiemarks to be a natural part of pony biology, perhaps even tied to their innate magic within. Yet perhaps it is something of a larger scale, a magic placed on ponykind as a whole in the far distant past though how or even by who would be uncertain. I will say I do not feel this someone would be princess Celestia, at least not from what the Journal of the Two Sister reveals.
I see a cutiemark as a visual expression on a pony's great talent or skill, something they can be passionate about and see through until the end of their life. That it often comes through an act or realization, often both, in which a pony learns of themselves and who they are... admittingly I actually feel trouble shoes throws a wrench into the whole thing and makes this a less certain process, not something I fully agree with.
Still because of this I do feel a cutiemark could be open for interpretation and that a pony could, possible, misunderstand what it is supposed to me. I remember a roleplay between myself and another involving Diamond Tiara and Princess Celestia, from before Crusaders of the Lost Mark, in which the filly goes to the princess in Canterlot from Ponyville to ask what her cutiemark means.
Still, unless something should fundamentally change with a a pony later on a cutiemark should also fit them, their special talent being something they and enjoy and would be willing to spend their life doing. Unless something happens in their life where the begin to dislike, resent, or even hate what they used to love or enjoy. It becoming a talent they are good at but find they can't stand doing. Apart from such a situation I don't feel a pony would get a talent in something they don't want to do with their life or something they don't enjoy.

since she was genetically engineered, she is unable to get a cutie mark ever. was this a good idea...? I dunno, I just want others perspectives on this idea I got.

If I were a pony, I feel it would have taken a long time for me to get my cutie mark, so long in fact that I would have given up hope. It wasn't until last year, when I was 15, that I discovered something I truly enjoy and believe I would be very good at, given more opportunities to practise, and that is acting as a director for plays, and has inspired me to finally decide what I'd most like to do when I'm older - be a well-known film and television director like my personal idol, Peter Jackson. However, for years I've been constantly changing what I'd want to do, and for a few years I was convinced I would be a great author. Maybe I would have gotten my cutie mark for writing, but who knows

I wanted to comment on Troubleshoes mark. While an upside down horseshoe isn't bad luck, it was thought that the luck inside would run out like water. Also, when I first saw them, I took it as a reference to puberty.

i agree with you when you say cutie marks are meant to show what the heart and soul of a pony is. i feel like cutie marks are what the pony was meant to be. it doesnt matter when they get their mark because if a filly was really good at something like art and got their mark then, but later discovered they had a passion for studying stars and finding new constellations, then their cutie mark would have less meaning to them and mislead others.

My OC's cutie mark symbolizes my love of fighting, and old style weaponry. Obviously, I'm a pretty good shot with a bow because of constant practice. It's REALLY important.

Personal theory - Ponies as we know them are, as a species, the half-breed cross between true horses (a la the Saddle Arabians) and changelings, and cutie marks are the last vestige of changeling transformation magic in them. In support of this, please note that the transformation event is marked by a flare of light, similar to the burst of flame when a changeling transforms.
By this theory, it truly is the last little 'a-ha' moment that triggers the cutie marks' appearance, as that is when the subconscious mind identifies the pony's true heart's desire and emblazons it for all to see. The conscious mind need not be interviewed or informed during this process.

I remember when these were a subject of controversy, like some authoritarian cosmic force was mandating jobs. I think they're more like a magical high school counselor. Sometimes the advice is straightforward, and sometimes it's more ambiguous. And like a counselor's advice, it can be ignored. A pony was dragged by her face across the countryside and dropped off at a huge geode. Then she became a fashion designer. Also, they're not set in stone. They can be changed by tampering with history, or directly altered.
Maybe if a young pony doesn't want to sweep floors, they can study hard and get some academic or STEM cutie mark instead of a push broom. There's probably nothing stopping a pony named Clean Sweep from doing something else if it brings them joy, but perhaps they simply slip into the role because because for them individually, it's an easy path, doesn't bother them, and evolutionary acceptance/expectations.

My OC's cutie mark is a dagger with a crescent moon inside and crossing a book. I'm not going into the whole thing about what it means, but cutie marks are also some times have a deeper meaning.
My main OC's cutie mark might've been created by Celestia. Because: as he was born, Celestia came and renamed him into Shadow Phoenix. And that's why he has a dark pheonix cutie mark. His cutie mark also describes his personality. Which is a shadowy kind of pony, dark.
No, I'm pretty sure the ponies in that Hearths Warming Eve play had cutiemarks (Starswil was there after all, and he had one); which means CMs existed before Celestia and Luna.
Maybe that's why we see her writing on paper all day. She's sketching cutiemark ideas.

Personally, I've always considered a kind of mix between the to theories presented here. Celestia was the one who invented the magic to cause cutiemarks and then released it into the world after a few trials so she didn't have to personally monitor it every second of every day.

Well in my story I have it to where my main character had her cutie mark for the longest only for it to change at the end of her story. Now for the reason for this is a change in personalty, because when she first got her cutie mark it was through hatred and destruction. But as she saw through her hatred and realized the love she had for her friends was more important then her revenge and her true self shined through and so did her cutie mark.
my cutie mark is a scroll with a question mark (the dot on the question mark is a heart) my cutie mark represents my love of reading,writing, art or anything in relation to paper. I do lots of things, but what I enjoy most is creating. and paper is the universal "blank slate" to create upon.
I personally think that cutie marks are related to the magic of the equestrian world. and the magic that controls fate give a pony the cutie mark that would best suite their personality, passion and destiny. this seems to work in the world of equestria. Ponies are given a cutie mark at the right time to match their personality and better the world around them, thust making a happy pony. trouble shoes was confused and thought that this destiny was to be clumsy and nothing more, and thust bettered nopony and was unhappy. when he figured out how to better himself and other, he became a happier pony.
I agree with tyandaga, that Celestia gives everyone the cutie marks in her free time, because, I also believe that after a pony is born, celestia visits them and tells the parents the name (this theory was not mine, but I agree with it). This is because the name matches the cutie mark, and if that is right, it would just make sense that Celestia gives them their name and cutie mark, because maybe, she can see future.

I believe that fate coincides with random chance, that people have multiple alternate destinies. Along with there being anchored points of destiny, where an event must occur, but it doesn't fully mater who it is that causes or enacts the event.
For me a Cutie Mark is a talent that a pony earns and grow's with.
I think cutiemarks should represent the talent, the personality and maybe even the flaws of the pony. And they shouldn't just represent the name of the pony.
For example: My OC's name is Blue Feathers. (guess you can all guess what she looks like...) But her Cutiemark isn't just a simple blue feather. Blue Feathers is basically the pony version of me. She has the same personality, talents and flaws. Her cutiemark represents two theatre-masks(one smiling, one frowning) held together by a white ribbon with music notes drawn on in. This cutiemark represents my love for acting and singing (talent). The smiling mask slightly covers the frowning mask, meaning that I mostly show my happy side to the world (personality). The white ribbon represents the help I need to keep it together sometimes. Because when I'm losing it, my emotions are all over the place (flaws).
And that's how I think a cutiemark should work.
My ponies oc has a shared cutie mark with her bestfriend which is a pink heart with white wings wrapped around it that symbolises that she is protective, strong minded and stubborn.
The other pony has a dark Purple Heart with black wings spreading out from each side to symbolis that she is care free, wild and mischievous. :33

I think cutie marks is their inner selves. I think like Luna said to Applebloom, that a cutie mark is just a symbol of who you are. Nothing more. I believe this to be true. I also think that cutie marks happen when they express their true selves. I made my first oc and I struggle with this. I've spent 3 years trying to find the right cutie mark to symbol who he is. in which he had to be pushed to his limits to realize what he purpose is. I believe in that is a good way for an older pony to not get their cutie mark right away. Putting that aside they are a symbol like Luna said. I don't think Celestia has the power to create cutie marks its themselves. Trouble Shoes got his when he was having fun at the rodeo whom slipped and fell when he revived his. this episode got downed alot for it. I think taking a closer look he could misjudge his cutie mark taking it as a bad Oman. the cutie mark crusaders helped him to see what he was born to do. Be a clown with the mishaps. I think that is actually quite clever. It happened when he missed up and he was laughed at because it was funny. He thought it had brought him bad luck, yet I believe he was blaming himself to be a bad luck and that cutie mark showed it.
So my two theories right there. I have plenty more about cutie marks and this is the exact reason why I have trouble trying to come up with a cutie mark that fits my oc's. A symbol of who they are as a character nothing more.
