the end is so symbolic of each characters perspectives. the woman thought that maybe it was him and turned to see and of course the train came by. while she walked on, not wasting her life on a maybe, the man just stood there the entire time, pausing his life, and that smile i take as him realizing that its time to move on.

Life is not fair. You don't always get what you want. It comes down to how you deal with it. Do you bury yourself in grief, regret and longing or do you move on. Akari moved on, Takaki hasn't.

takaki never told akari he loves her, and maybe thats what made him regret it. For the detail Takaki intend to bring akari the answer for her letter but Takaki lost the letter bcs the wind... we can see Takaki is not man with straight forward move, and then we know that akari doesnt give her letter bcs the letter before is not answered yet.. and why can't they just calling each other or something like that.
Did moving house make them change telephone numbers at that time (we know the setting of this film was in the era of only landlines) because I asked if they missed each other why they stopped contacting or did their final separation make them lose contact (because they often moved) it seems like this is the story about how the universe, space and time do not allow them to be together and about the one who can move on an not yet

5 Centimeters Per Second is a movie that crushes your soul and then leaves an impact on you for the rest of your life. A lot of sad animes (well in my expierence at least) are just a one time watch where you cry and then forget it the next day or week. But It's been 6 years since I watched this movie and I haven't forgetten it. And it's amazing how Your Name and 5 Centimeters were made by the same man... but are so very different.
Your Name teaches you that fate will always bring you together no matter what. Whereas 5 Centimeters teaches you that sometimes life doesn't work out the way you want it to... and that's okay. Atleast that's the takeaway I got from it.

I wouldn't say the ending was a bad thing. The main guy is actually smiling as he steps away from the track - as if the memories of his love was enough, for now, to comfort him.

@@TheFlash-rh2el I feel like Your Name and 5cm per second are opposites of each other, one with a happy, good ending, the other with a sad, depressing ending. Your Name says that long distance relationships can work, through loyalty, perseverance, and trust. But 5cm per second says that life doesn't often have a happy ending, many of the characters ended up with a sad ending in the movie, and overall it is pretty sad, much more than your name.

When i watched this when i was young, i didn't liked it plot-wise. But as an adult, i think this is really the most realistic and heartbreaking Makoto Shinkai movie.
People come and go in our lives. Some people grow apart. And some move on, while others get stranded.

I definitely recommend to read the novel or the manga as well at the very least, there are extra scenes that would make you feel less “empty.”
5CM has always been my favorite Shinkai film, even today. As cheesy as it sounds, it’s mainly due to how real it is and how much easier it is to relate to. No supernatural events happening unlike his other works, just mostly pure drama. Although, because of this, I can see why a lot of people don’t enjoy 5CM as much.
It’s also speculated that the movie was bittersweet/somber due to the fact that Shinkai was going through a break-up at the time of production with someone he was engaged with.

The novelization (also written by Shinkai) has some additional scenarios that weren't animated so if you want to get hit in the feels some more, the English translation by Yen On isn't bad.

  • @alfonsobiggers2452

Shinkai is a master of harnessing emotion as much as he does artistic beauty. Here, he harnesses the melancholy of nostalgia and growing up (and even growing apart). If cherry blossoms fall at 5 centimeters per second, people will drift apart just as steadily over time.
Every once in a while, I revisit this film and find that more and more of it begins to just make sense to me. The hesitations and reservations of the characters, and how they add up over time to create a state of distance from each other. The motifs of loneliness in the blossoms, snow, and the spacecraft. Tenmon's brilliantly effective score and musical themes. All these add up to a superlative and achingly memorable work of emotional cinema.
Makoto Shinkai might have made better films afterward, but he always was a gifted introspective artist who could move even grown men to tears.

And after reading the manga, that just goes more into depth of the story of his girlfriend as an adult and makes your heart break so much more for how he feels. As an adult, I feel like we have all had a story like this in our lives that we could relate it to.

I also always equated the 5 centimetres per second to the ever-growing distance between them, throughout their lives. At some point it because so much that they just couldn't be together.
When i was first watching it, i was so confused for the entire runtime, but when the line "a chain of short stories about their distance came up, I suddenly could connect to everything that was shown.
This might not be Shinkai's most praised work but it is definitely one of his best. Such a grounded realistic story.
Also, since you are watching Shinkai movies, Garden of words is by far the prettiest and most symbolic movie of all his works. Very little dialogue, but literally every single thing in the scene, has meaning.

  • @robertscott1949

You can see how people who watched 5 Centimeters per Second before watching Your Name would expect heartbreak at the end and be happily surprised when Taki and Mitsuha meet on the staircase. Until Your Name, all of Makoto Shinkai's works were about unresolved separations and longing. Since Your Name, Shinkai's next two films, Weathering with You and Suzume have a decidedly happy ending. I guess you can only sell sadness and disappointment for so long. If you really want to see how Shinkai has developed, look up his very first film, "She and Her Cat". It is a short black and while film that he made in his spare time on his own on his laptop computer. He used black and white because of memory and speed limitations in his computer. It is free on UA-cam now I think. It was never in theaters. (There is also a color series of the same name that was made later.) In She and Her Cat you can see the beginnings of Shinkai's realism animation style and fascination with trains.

That's Makoto Shinkai for you. He always plays heavily with distance. All of his movies, at least all I've seen, go for creating feelings and then kinda taking it away by putting distance between it and letting things develop. Of all his movies I enjoyed "Garden of Words" and "Hoshi no Koe" the most. Garden of Words is from 2013 and very well made. Hoshi no Koe is kinda an early work and in a way crude, but I liked the scenario and it doesn't get out of my head, even though watching it YEARS ago.

This is one of my favorite movies for many reasons. You feel everything throughout this whole movie.
It strikes a heavy cord with me because when I was really young, my family moved to a different state and I lost the friends I had made. Then in high school we moved again and I lost those friends as well. And I've moved twice since then, losing the other connections I made during that time. And now I'm just floating here thinking of all those friends I had and how it's so hard to make any new ones at this point, because I feel they won't be able to grow as close as I'd like not having those moments that pull people together when they are younger.
I'm not sure if any of that made sense or if anyone will even read this. I'm not sure if I even feel better after typing it out. Anyways, I'm so glad you reacted to such a beautiful and sad movie that actually feels closer to real life than pretty much any other movie out there.

Sorry. Life is weird, and hard.
I watched byousoku 5/cm in 2007, upon release. Guess I'm old. But since then, I can't and could never since find a movie that so passionately resonated with me and my experiences. Once in a lifetime, truly.
But it's hard. Even when a movie is so hauntingly realistic and you want to love it, it's hard because of the same issues. you almost dont want to except it as reality...
    I wish this weren't me?
I wish i could watch it and say "aww so sweet" like every other movie but I can't.
It's special to me in a way that nothing, ever will be able to replicate. And that's great but also not really.
well... You watched it all , so you know. I don't think I need to explain but from the absolute bottom of my heart, I thank you as another lonely human for experiencing the same experience I have. It's strangely cathartic.

Second part only deepness that and boy says himself that he sends sms to no one since he delates them not knowing what to talk about with girl he loves. He still loves her that's why he don't see girl that loves him. Third part is smack to the face, the girl he loves get married she moved along while he is trapped in everyday routine unable to forfeit his first love. Attempt he made failed because of this "even a 1000 messages cant bring us closer". I understood it because I had similar story myself. So this movie hit me much harder.
