This movie is so well-done. Most shows that uses the "protagonist is hallucinating" plot, we can figure out when it's happening because we're the observers. Satoshi Kon made you feel like you are Mima, you're like experiencing the same hallucinations and being confused which is real and which is not. You yourself questions your perspective of reality. Brilliant and mind-boggling masterpiece.
In case you're unfamiliar with the idea. Japanese idols often 'graduate' from their group, which basically means they've become too old to be in a girl group.
@@lynesseWhen other members talking about Mima will open her legs in front of the photographer, they called Mima “Mima-Née”. Nee means Nee-san,which means older girl/lady
The way I've heard it put (many times by different people, but phrased the same) is "If Hitchcock had made an Anime movie it would have been this one."
For another Satoshi Kon film that isn't at all horror, I recommend you watch Tokyo Godfathers sometime around Christmas/New Years! It's about three homeless people who find an infant in the trash on Christmas and go on a journey throughout Tokyo to try to reunite her with her parents. There's so much that ties together by the end of it and it's so, so uplifting. I think it's unforgettable on the exact opposite end of the spectrum from Perfect Blue!
this film really brought home how rough handled performers in the pop machine are handled, driven, and often enough run over by their handlers and the industry. Mima's story being the focus, the ramifications and implications for Rumi's story are devastating! it's suggested that Rumi WAS a pop idol, but didn't continue to rise as management wanted, and also that she might have been assaulted (possibly what caused her performance/progress to faulter/fail). externalization of rumi's failure onto her needing mima to succeed... and watching the suffering of both... OMG it's a brilliant film!
If you're in the mood for that fluid back and forth between what's real and what isn't, but without the psychological horror elements, I'd highly recommend "Millenium Actress" by the same director.
Also I would like to note that it's amazing to look back at the events of the movie and realize that Me-Mania (the stalker dude) probably actually did VERY LITTLE in the movie until that scene near the end when he attacked Mima. It wasn't until things like the rape scene and nude photoshoot that he started feeling betrayed by Mima, and he'd been communicating with the fake Mima through Mima's Room before then... Meaning that the "traitor" fax, the letter bomb, and everything on that website was Rumi! It's obvious that Rumi killed Tadokoro, and I believe it's also strongly hinted that she was the one who killed the screenwriter and the photographer as well; especially with the photographer I think the fact that they showed "Mima" killing him was in part to show that it was Rumi in "Mima"-mode. People even theorize that the reason Mima kept losing time and getting super confused and passing out at that one point in the room is because when Rumi started visiting her again ("it's been a while") she was drugging Mima. So Me-Mania pretty obviously did a hit-and-run on that guy who'd been making trouble at Mima's concert, and then urged on by Rumi he attacked Mima right near the end to try to "take care of" the "fake Mima." Everything else was Rumi and that realization was mindblowing and kind of terrifying for me!
this was Satoshi Kon's directorial debut, and what a start, he only directed for about a decade before dying from cancer. Millenium Actress is a heartwarming one similar to this, where reality and fiction blend and youre not sure what's real.
The last line where Mima says: No, I'm real is dubbed by Rumi's voice actress. So we really never know if the was the real Mima or it's still Rumi imagining things.
That’s actually a myth, from a mistaken dub. The last line is spoken by Mima in Japanese, and the director has confirmed that it’s not an open question: It’s simply Mima.
I know exactly what you mean about the style of animation. It’s just so unique and gives me a certain feeling I can’t describe. Something mixed with nostalgia.
I watched this movie for the first time recently. The build up of tension and uncertainty between reality and fantasy blew my mind. It's one of those movies where I feel like I will find new details and hints to the twist every time I rewatch it
Also, on the subject of Satoshi Kon, I recommend watching his series Paranoia Agent. Its just like Perfect Blue in its psychological horror and stretches out into a wonderful, frightening and trippy story.
This is easily in my top five anime movies. If you want to watch something similar for your other channel, I'd highly recommend Christian Bale's "The Machinist". It's a very underrated psychological thriller. When you do watch/react to it, keep in mind that he did this right before being cast as Batman.
Not just Requiem for a Dream, this movie also influenced Black Swan with Natalie Portman. This movie's not just a psychological thriller/horror, but also a very early commentary on the effect of the internet (and social media) on fame and fandom, and the corporate pop idol industry. Mima's theme pops into my head whenever I watch videos about famous youtubers that imploded, lol.
You are a brave soul to have endured that film. Perfect Blue is not for the faint of heart and a lot of the people who I have tried to recommend this film to broke down. Great commentary and reaction. Looking forward to more. Also, in case you are still confused about the meaning of the film, there was an excellent video analyzing why the movie is as horrifying as it is. I highly recommend it ua-cam.com/video/MJmK5SOeQBc/v-deo.html
Perfect Blue is truly made for those thinking of anime as mere "superheroes, Robots & Science Fiction".... they'll get shocked! This movie is a masterpiece due to its terrifying message, depth & raw depiction of a real topic on aspiring pop stars dark side ....
This film is one of my favorite anime films, first time I watched it, honestly it was hard to watch, expecially the rape scene. Now that I'm older, and I understand they were just acting in that scene, it doesn't bother me as much. The ending of the film, always leaves me in chills
So I watched this and kinda got it all wrong in thinking most of what happened was not real. Maybe I was trying too hard to focus on figuring it out and missed what seems obvious to you. After watching another reaction and now yours, I feel dumb. I know I am but in the end figured it out.
It was not scary ... and idk but i figured it all out on a single watching no confusion idk if ppl are dumb or what =_= and id think its even 1% terrifying or scary .. if u really wanna be scared ha ? Watch SHIKKI

15:15 Vicky : "Is She gone crazy or We?"
This movie React in a Nutshell.
Satoshi Kon was called Japanese David Lynch. He only made four movies and one TV series, and they are all masterpieces.
In case you're unfamiliar with the idea. Japanese idols often 'graduate' from their group, which basically means they've become too old to be in a girl group.
But why only Mima? Are they not the same age?
@@lynesse the thing about idol groups is that not all of them are the same age, it’s not uncommon to have a member older than the rest
@@lynesseWhen other members talking about Mima will open her legs in front of the photographer, they called Mima “Mima-Née”. Nee means Nee-san,which means older girl/lady
Btw this movie still gives me nightmares (┬┬﹏┬┬)
After this, it is hightly recommanded to watch a "good vibes" movie or do something else cool...
Most people say this is the anime equivalent of “Requiem For A Deam”, but I would argue instead that “Black Swan” is a much closer comparison
The first ever Psychological Horror film in anime format.
One of the best and most horrifying psychological movies I've seen in general 😭
I just saw it last year. Total mind fuck
The way I've heard it put (many times by different people, but phrased the same) is "If Hitchcock had made an Anime movie it would have been this one."
Maybe watch Go Shogun: Time Etranger, predates this by quite a bit.
That's cap

also a move thats aged really well since the idol culture in japan hasnt changed since it came out
The scene where Mima is submerged in the bathtub and screams underwater is replicated shot-for-shot with Jennifer Connelly in Requiem for a Dream!
Yep, Darren Aronofsky bought the North American rights to the film just so he could use imagery from it. Black Swan was also heavily influenced by it.
If you're in the mood for that fluid back and forth between what's real and what isn't, but without the psychological horror elements, I'd highly recommend "Millenium Actress" by the same director.
Loved how the disproportionate eye spacing spelled out who the villains were

This takes me back, I remembered this being the first vid I saw of yours before the ghibi situation. By far my favorite film from Satoshi Kon.
Satoshi Kon was such a visionary
13:12 Fact. Darren Aronofsky copied this shot in his movie "Requiem For A Dream" in 2000, with Jennifer Connelly.
Also, on the subject of Satoshi Kon, I recommend watching his series Paranoia Agent. Its just like Perfect Blue in its psychological horror and stretches out into a wonderful, frightening and trippy story.
Interesting coincidence: our main protagonist here was actually hit in the head with a bat.
Small world.
This movie is amazing also Black swan and Requiem for a dream take inspiration of this movie
doesn't take inspiration, he rips it off. I hate that director. You can check an interview with Kon showing exactly that
@@pauldonovan8036 are you saying that Aronofsky rips off Kon? Interesting, that would make sense
@@AR-yd2ndrips off implies he did it without permission. He paid for the North American rights to the film just so he could use it.
The Powertron start was originally ment to cause the watchers to wonder if they were watching the correct film.
The band is called Cham.

Yeah that one scene is always really hard to watch.
Satoshi Kon...You should watch all of his movies. They are all great, all different, and all very entertaining.
Do you know the Ballet movie "Black Swan" ?
it's seems the director got inspiration from "Perfect blue"

This is the dark side of being a celebrity. The show is purely trying to represent that to the world.
Just letting you know that I only seen the English dub version of this movie

I hope you React to SpyxFamily next.
