Did Bill Maher Become an Ally?

  • Friends, the atheist political commentator and television host Bill Maher has long been a bitter critic of Christianity. In additional to regular swipes at Christians on his shows, Maher also devoted an entire documentary film, sardonically entitled “Religulous,” to lampoon what he takes to be Christianity’s moral and theological absurdities. However, Maher has recently tempered his anti-Christian rhetoric and started focusing his biting wit on criticizing progressive woke ideology and condemning positions like neo-racism, the denial of biology, and the stifling of free speech in ways that the Catholic tradition would largely agree with.
In light of this apparent shift, is it time for people of faith to reassess Bill Maher? Has one of Christianity’s most vocal opponents now become an ally or, perhaps, even a friend?
A listener asks, “What is truth?”

That’s the point. Maher is still an old school liberal, and he doesn’t like the cultural shift to progressivism/wokism. Being opposed to wokism is the commonality between Maher and conservatives and that is why one could call him an ally.

    • @erric288
      @erric288 27 днів тому +2

He boarded the same train that is liberalism and moral relativism, but he decided to get off at a certain point because his underlying Christian suppositions informed his moral instincts that certain aspects of wokism are, in fact, wrong and go "too far". It's the same thing with Dawkins and Douglass Murray: they just can't go all the way into full moral relativism. They realize the merit of Christian morality and the faith's society building power. But the trend of moral relativism cannot be stopped if secularization continues. That can only be done with an actual revival of true faith. Society cannot be built upon a set of beliefs people don't actually believe. Even if those beliefs provide a certain function, sin is too tempting without the grace of God and a firm, genuine, sincere belief in God and all that requires of someone. And a State that pretends to endorse no particular confession only serves to drive them all out of existence. Such a State incentivises a go along to get along attitude that privatizes religion to promote commerce and civic cohesion. But when a society lacks a shared morality, and its citizens increasingly have no religion to guide them at all, civic cohesion and commerce begin to breakdown. Thus, it undermines the very foundations upon which the State is built and is ultimately self-destructive. This is what we are observing in "Real Time" as it were.

Bill Maher, after pointing out various hypocrisies of some Christians, famously quipped, "I'm a better Christian than they are, and I'm an atheist!" I think he was only half joking. Remember that he was baptized a Catholic. He can never escape that, as he was marked as Christ's own forever on that day. His Jewish roots also come through. He has always maintained a strong Judeo-Christian moral compass on social issues...in spite of himself. His comedy tends to point out the social policies and systems that perpetuate poverty, for instance. We should pray for Bill to return to the Church. If he does, we must never ask him to stop being himself. I know that many on this channel may not like Stephen Colbert, but a few years ago Stephen unashamedly (but gently) urged Bill to return to Catholicism during an interview. Bill refused, but at least someone who understands him is reaching out to him in love.

Bishop Barron mentions that classical liberalism was reflected in the great revolutions of the 18th Century. I would say the American Revolution was representative of classical liberal ideology while other revolutions of that period like those in France and Hatti wouldn't qualify since the emphasis on the rights of the individual are missing in both of those instances. I start there because if you want to understand the left you have to understand the history. The birthday of the left as we understand it is May 5, 1789. That was when the French Revolution kicked off. Another milestone date is Feb 21, 1848, the date the Communist Manifesto was published. If you want a date to attach a lot of our current problems to that would be June 28, 1969, the date of the Stonewall riots in New York City.
Guys like Maher and Dawkins and these LGB groups who are coming out against sexualizing children are suffering from the chickens-coming-home-to-roost syndrome. They were so convinced of the rightness of their cause when they were promoting atheism and sexual deviancy that they failed to see where it would all lead in the end. The radicals on the fringes in the universities were not going to simply remain on the fringes. They were true-believers. The left has always been obsessed with the acquisition of power. Marxists have always believed in the historical inevitability of their religion, and Marxism is a religion to them, make no mistake about that. Lenin and Mao decided that the rules needed to be altered to achieve the Marxist utopia and their # 1 target was always the United States. When they discovered Marxist economics was a loser they switched to cultural issues. But the tactics are identical. Just a new boogie man and a new super-structure oppressing and deceiving the ill-educated masses. Also, notice who is leading the charge? Middle and upper-middle class kids. Marxist revolutions always emerge from those groups. They start in parlors and coffeeshops, not ghettos and barbershops.
Maher and Dawkins want their revolution back. Too late. The Jacobins took it away from you and guess what, they aren't giving it back. The father of all lies, the one you have promoted and been a front-line foot soldier for is a master at deception. Welcome to the party pal. Can we find common ground and fight alongside Maher and Dawkins. Maybe. But understand this, they still hate you and look down their nose at your silly superstitious beliefs. You may want allies like that, I don't. When they repent and get right with God I'll listen. Otherwise, I'm not going to expose myself to demons. But that's me.

    • @douglasmerkel8747

True (although I think I have a slight preference for Maher over Dawkins though that's not saying much. I find Dawkins' arrogance....😡 And now to hear him say he's 'culturally Christian' and that he laments the rise of Islamism, after doing everything he can to tear down that Christian culture in which he now sees value....how can he look in the mirror? I find him abhorrent, appalling!) Must.work.on.forgiveness.🙏🏼
However, to some degree, I think Bishop Barron here is 'modeling' how to handle people like Maher who have been obviously and/or vocally antagonistic (to put it mildly) towards our beliefs, but are now seeing how far, and how insane 'liberalism' has gone, and find themselves agreeing with people they formerly mocked.
i.e., Meet them at places in which you agree. Plant seeds by asking questions about why they find themselves thinking in this way. I don't think Bishop is purposefully supporting Maher. Perhaps he's merely throwing him a bone (and some forgiveness), and showing us how to deal with people like him. ❤

In mid-April, Maher said: in a statement which got a lot of publicity "Pro-life absolutists think [abortion] is murder. And it kind of is. I'm just okay with that. I am. There's 8 billion people in the world. I'm sorry, we won't miss you. And that's my position on that."
After a person says he's okay with murder, why would any bishop choose to claim that person is an ally of sorts? Adding to the reprehensibility of Maher's remark is the insulting disdain he shows to people who - by his own claim - have been murdered: "I'm sorry we won't miss you." If a celebrity said he was fine with the murder of Israelis on Oct 7, or that he's sorry, he won't miss the people killed at Pulse nightclub in Florida, would Bishop Barron think the time was right to say, "Well, on the other hand, this person says some good things too"?
And it's not as if the bishop hasn't had a lot of time to revise his remarks which he made in late May. That he hasn't done so is a disappointment.

Whether he admits it or not, Traditional Catholic Education teaches faith, morals and non-relativistic Catholic Thinking. You can see it in Colbert, Conan too.
They don't wear "Catholic" on their sleeves of couse, but they do call out the hypocritical leadership and the unjust rules of the elite through observational comedy. Isn't that what comedy does? The King's Fool calls a spade a spade. The King's court laughs at the kernel of truth. We are reminded of these truths from entertainers we love.
Does classical liberal tradition (enlightenment: ie, reason over superstition) also play a role for these guys? Of course. Does scatalogical and obscene also enter their acts? Of couse. It has to for them to survive in the industry. Do realize how insanely powerful the lbgtq lobby is. I'm still waiting for Cardinal Dolan to reconsecrate St Pat's.

Very astute observation. However, I am also getting an uncomfortable feeling that Bishop Barron and other US church leaders are sliding into political commentary.
I believe a priest that politics is not a priest. He is a politician. The embrace of the extreme right by the bishop and the use of his platform to support it is a slippery slope. Many Christians in the US believe that the extremist platform, though unpalatable, is a means to an end. They seek political power before seeking the Lord. Very unbiblical.

These people can laugh and scoff and take the moral 'highground' with Christians and clergy, etc., but when Bill Maher equates abortion to murder and then states he doesn't care? i.e., Meet them at places in which you agree. Plant seeds by asking questions about why they find themselves thinking in this way. I don't think Bishop is purposefully supporting Maher. Picking isolated verses of Scripture to attempt to define the meaning of words like justification, sanctification and grace, etc. assumes we humans have not only received but fully understand the entire revelation and meaning of Christ's words and actions in Scripture - as well as those of his apostles and the Doctors of the church throughout the ages. In other words, we fully understand the mind of God. I don't think so.

    Dear Bishop,
Sorry to bother with that, but it is very important to me. I'm worried of the fact that the word 'person' has been replaced by 'individual'. I'm a Priest from Paris, serving in the US at the moment, therefore, English is not my mother language. I think however that 'individual' and 'person' are definitely not synonyms. 'Individual' can be used for animals, no 'person'. On the other hand, 'person' is used for what is three in the Holy Trinity, but definitely not 'individual'. I'm afraid that, implicitly of course, anytime we use individual for a human being, we deny that we are at the image of God. I am very grateful about your content, I appreciate a lot your capacity to dialog with the World. What do you think about this issue? Personally, I decided to never use the word 'individual' to talk about a human being, and I'm a bit upset when I hear you using that word so often...

A constant diatribe against wokeism doesn't make much sense to me. There have been real cases such as the awarding of Veterans Benefits and VHA home loans that have been highly unfair. As a 65-year-old white man, I understand the world is tilted in my favor. I have been involved in international trade and a white man in a business suit with a U.S. passport gets a lot of breaks someone else doesn't get.
I have been on the wrong side of affirmative action in the USA or certainly felt like it, but have also got the subtle advancement based upon being white that my non-white peers did not get. The subtle racism in our society is like compound interest, over a lifetime of having a slight advantage every day it really adds up.
Until we are ready to begin the equality of opportunity at birth, the children with the most resources are going to rise to the top. We still prefer to give our children an unfair advantage and until we stop some people are going to feel rightly oppressed.

As the founders of our republic understood--this form of government will work only for a moral and religious people. If the church is healthy and vibrant and Christ-centeted, prophetic, that is much more likely. When the people stray from commonly held moral values, you get the chaos and extreme autonomy we see today. Still--I prefer that danger to the danger of government run amok in directing the people it governs in how to be happy. The founders knew tyranny first-hand. Preaching without a license? Public lashing. You get the picture. It's easier for revival to happen than to turn back a government that has become tyrannical "for our own good." Actually, that's kind of where we are now, but not by people who want to enforce God's law... The solution to our current ills is for people to turn back, voluntarily, to God and His moral law...Which seems to be happening with the Eucharistic Revival...to name one.thing. Thanks be to God!

But the talk show schtick he has nailed, thanks to societal and political timing (Obama admin.) and his bitter, well-honed snark. With plenty of ad hominem, quasi intellectualism and cheap crude humor delivered in his casual inflectionless nasal whine you have the cookie cutter recipe for “progressive” late night tv. He is supposed to come across as “casual suave”, but like his acting success, doesn’t quite make it. Not entertaining necessarily but effective. Requisite. Scripted. Predictable.

I like most of Bishop Barron’s opinions but this is one I think he’s a bit blind on. People want equality of opportunity but fail to realize that NEVER just happens. The reason Marxist power dynamics is so pervasive is because it’s an accurate description. People don’t share resources with others in mass - especially if it means they would suffer themselves-that’s why early Christianity is so counter-cultural and modern Christianity in America is nowhere near that. So given that our society is currently unequal and we don’t have equality of opportunity what’s the solution? He doesn’t like wokeness, but at least they have a solution. I don’t hear one from the right they just don’t like the left’s.

The good bishop is a genial ecumenical expositor, but with respect I think there is some unconscious sleight of hand in deeming the claims of faith (the Resurrection, the virgin birth, the miracles, etc...) as "supra-rational", while welcoming then into the lower audience tier the merely rational discursus.
Obviously this is a way to sublet claims that cannot survive rational inquiry into a rarefied sphere above inquiry. Being above rational inspection, these claims attain the aura of faith, attested to only by scripture, and the existential qualia of Christians throughout the centuries...
I have a great respect of Christianity, but its discourse with Reason is definitely vexed with various problems, not easily reduced.

People, generally those in power, can look at the level of opportunity and say "looks equal to me" without any way to prove or disprove it. But when we look at outcome and see that group X is consistenly accessing less opportunity it is not evidence that ought to be ignored. Opportunity without attention to outcome cannot be a rational response to injustice.
