Early Life and Background
Neeraj Chopra was born on December 24, 1997, in the small village of Khandra in Panipat, Haryana. Coming from a humble farming family, Neeraj's early life was grounded in simplicity and hard work. Despite the challenges of growing up in rural India, Neeraj's passion for sports was evident from a young age. However, it wasn’t athletics that initially caught his attention. As a child, he struggled with obesity, leading his family to encourage him to take up sports for fitness. This is how his journey into the world of athletics began.
Introduction to Javelin
Neeraj's introduction to javelin throwing was almost accidental. At the age of 11, during a visit to a local stadium, he saw some senior athletes practicing the sport and was immediately intrigued. With little knowledge and no formal training, Neeraj started practicing javelin on his own. His natural talent was quickly recognized by local coaches, who encouraged him to take the sport more seriously.
Under the guidance of his first coach, Jai Chaudhary, Neeraj began his formal training in javelin throw. His dedication and natural ability soon became apparent as he started winning medals at local competitions.
Rising Through the Ranks
Neeraj's early success came at the junior level, where he quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with. In 2012, at the age of just 14, he won gold at the National Junior Championships. This victory marked the beginning of his rise in Indian athletics.
His breakthrough came in 2016 when he won the gold medal at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, with a world junior record throw of 86.48 meters. This performance not only earned him international recognition but also secured his place as one of India’s brightest athletic prospects.
The Journey to the Olympics
Neeraj's journey to the Olympics was marked by consistent performances and a relentless pursuit of excellence. He continued to dominate in various international competitions, including the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, where he clinched gold medals.
Despite his successes, Neeraj faced numerous challenges along the way. In 2019, he suffered a serious elbow injury that required surgery and kept him out of competition for several months. However, his determination and resilience saw him make a strong comeback in 2020, just in time for the Tokyo Olympics.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics: A Historic Win
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was the stage where Neeraj Chopra etched his name into the history books. On August 7, 2021, Neeraj threw a distance of 87.58 meters in the men's javelin final, securing the gold medal. This victory was historic for several reasons.
Neeraj became the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics, and only the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold after Abhinav Bindra. His win ended India’s century-long wait for an athletics gold, making him a national hero overnight.
