This version is the most epic Pink Floyd cover i've ever seen. Pure magic.
The simple fact that not many people even try to make covers of PF songs because of their epic and unique sound. To have the balls to try and then do such a great job speaks volumes to their skills as musicians but also the respect they showed the original.
They did make it their own. It is amazing what they did to this song. That is what a cover song should be. It not only showcased Marko's vocals, it showcased Emppu as a tremendous guitarist. One of my all time favorite song....... :-)

This is exactly what I thought when I heard this piece for the first time years ago, when Marco just had begun at Nightwish and I didn't exactly know what to think of this "newcomer".
As an alltime fan of Pink Floyd AND Nightwish this cover is like the fullfillment of my wildest dreams. When I saw it the first time, I had to cry :-)
Emppu's solos are the epitome of "Less is more". 🎸

One could think that a Pink Floyd masterpiece isn't something you can make better sounding but Marco pulled the carpet from under our feet with this one back in the day. It's f**king hard song to sing.

A perfect cover. They kept all the important vibes and feel of the original and still put their unique stamp on it. I loved it and I am a long time Pink Floyd fan (since 1972 and have seen them live starting with the original line up several times).
Marco captured Gilmour's vocals but added so much more dynamically (and I love Gilmour's vocals) and Emppu's playing had the spirit of Gilmour's guitar work without copying it (and Gilmour is solidly a Top 3 guitarist for me). Great job. Great choice.
This was the End of an Era tour (Tarja's last).
Totally agree. They kept the spirit of the original but did not mimic or copy it, added their own touch to it but respected the original, thus not making a cover but a tribute to the original and amazing song.
This song gives me goosebumps everytime.

Marco's voice is so powerful & Emppu's guitar work is AWSOME he's so underrated but he plays rhythm and lead in Nightwish
Take a long look at this one again and notice Jukka. He had a terrible migraine headache during this concert. You'll notice him covering his head during the drum breaks. Can you imagine having to pound on those drums with a massive migraine? He was definitely a trooper that day.
What a drummer.. Lets hope he gets better and comes back
I’ve got two things to say:
1) What a great cover & performance;
2) That’s an absolutely beautiful cap behind ya!
Emppu made total justice to David Gilmour's guitar solo, super technical yet emotional solo as it's in pink Floyd songs. And Marco Hietala gets underated because Floor is incredible. Marco is amazing, he has songs he sings in Nightwish as "While Your Lips are Still Red". ua-cam.com/video/Kmiw4FYTg2U/v-deo.html . Also he sings "The Islander". Marco also has solo work and took part of a project called "Northern Kings" with the best Heavy Metal singers in Scandinavia IMO.
The impressiveness of this is that they make it their own, a heavy version
- and yet it's so faithful to the original! The keyboard tone, the guitar sound.
Drum fills and all were the same, like the march effect, just to name one example. And yet there was the double bass drum and more shred, to metallize it.
Hope the jr goes and checks the original.

You should sometime check put Brother Firetribe, the guitarist Emppu plays in that aswell. I recommend Heart full of fire for example.
To me this song and its placement in End of an Era was a statement that the quality of music is not diminished by the lack of Tarja's presence. The band is so accomplished and tight and Marco could if they wanted more than carry the vocals. Personally I love this rendition more than the original and I can only imagine as Pink Floyd cringed over another cover, they relaxed and smiled on hearing this one.
This is by far the best cover I ever heard, didn't know it was a cover at all.

Probably the best cover, or should I say tribute to Pink Floyd by Nightwish. This PF song is 4th on Tuomas' list of his favorite songs. Especially Marco & Emppu do an amazing job in this performance.

Emppu Em-ulated Gilmour brilliantly!....... Marko's vocals are awesome. (You got that right about Tuomas liking Pink Floyd!)...... Tuomas' arrangement was inspired (so was the lighting on him!).... Jukka on drums is so "INTO IT"!.... I miss his expressions recently!.... I created a NIghtwish fan out of Pink Floyd fan by playing them this song!

It should be noted that Marko does have a little reputation for adding his own spin onto things, in live performances. I also seem to remember that the original version of High Hopes was one of the songs that inspired Marko to start singing. When it was decided that Nightwish was going to cover it, he swore to do the song justice. (which, omg, did he ever!) Those two things may be the reason for that "dirty look" that Tuomas gives him.
Awesome reaction guys, and the point about Nightwish making it their own. I just heart Pat Benatar's "Heartbreaker" on the radio driving home, and I couldn't help thinking how much I would have loved to hear Nightwish with Tarja cover that. Floor could probably do a great job with it as well.

(Love watching people discovering Nightwish). This band is fanominal. This song showcases the guys true talents, absolutely killed it. Pink Floyd should feel honored.

Marco Hietala was the Lead singer of Tarot which is/was an awesome band by it's own right. Hietala is an awesome singer.
Ohhh Pink Floyd, the greatest band of all times. Thanks to them we have today's music. Everything is inspired on their music. On the other hand, this cover is great even though it's impossible to outstand the great David Gilmour. Also, Thoumas recognized that Pink Floyd are their biggest inspiration. Anyways, thank you for the review!!
P.S.: the last words of the song are "for ever and ever"... it was the last Pink Floyd's song and it was the last Nightwish show with Tarja. I think everything was deeply thought. Thanks guys
I love u (2), cause how u show ur musik-passsion to your son (sry for my english, not native speaking) is the same way, my dad showed me his Passion for Pink Floyed, Deep Purple, ACDC a.s.o. in the 80´s. And I LOVE him for this! :D And this Cover is absolutly amazing and special! And yes imo better than the original... it CATCH´s me so much more! Marco´s Voice is Hunting Me...

I had to go listen to the original to compare cuz I've never heard it before. Wow, Nightwish blows the original out of the water! I love how haunting they made it sound. Anything Tuomas touches turns to gold, he is not from this world. I absolutely love Tuomas and his genius mastermind. Marco really brought the lyrics to life
Do "Pharaoh Sails to Orion" and "Beauty and the Beast" from the concert "From Wishes to Eternity". This is so awesome heavier version of the original and great performance with the feeling and details.

I've always said that I wouldn't complain if there was more Nightwish songs with Marko as the lead vocalist.
But he still does have rather big role as a support in some songs, and sometimes even as the other lead vocalist.
Guys the next video has to be the fan made Edema Ruh (ua-cam.com/video/2BfakYUK-0Q/v-deo.html) a great song but the scenes of the band off stage are just great and watch for the 'Caution WET FLOOR" sign that Floor holds up around 4:10 it is a riot, gives you a feel for the group other than the stage presence you get from all the videos of their LIVE performances. Here this is a great song and few bands would dare tackle a Pink Floyd song let alone "High Hopes" but Nightwish makes this one their own and Marco, well Marco is amazing here, hard to believe he had botched surgery on his vocal chords in the early 90's and had to learn to sing all over again having only lost his high falsetto. Great reaction guys and nice shout out to Emppu here who did a fantastic job, when it is time to perform he is all business even though he goofs around a lot on stage (great to be having fun doing what you love) he is a deadly serious musician when it is his time to carry the composition.

I saw Pink Floyd perform this live back in the mid 90s. It was incredible to see...one of my favorites off the Division Bell CD. Marco absolutely slays the vocals on this, and due to his power he wins out over Gilmour in that regard. However, as good as Emppu's guitar work is in this (and it is DAMN good), it doesn't compare to the amazing steel guitar solo Gilmour played that night I saw them. The raw emotion Gilmour put into it is about like what Marco's voice did for this cover.

I love Nightwish and Floor. But I just discovered a female lead vocalist and band on UA-cam that blew my mind to kingdom come. She’s from the small Faroe island (about 600 people )but if she had 20,000 or more listening to the following 3 songs I am going to recommend they would go apeshit wild for hours after... no one will recommend this so please I beg of you to privately watch ( and your subscribers who are reading this and enjoy entrancing mystical performers ) and I guarantee it will silence your mind and open the floodgates of your heart and soul.

At the end she hits notes that are so celestial so mystical so heavenly that even the great Dimash couldn’t execute with the emotional impact and purity that Eivor does. And a band member shaking his head sideways is a sight to behold. They deserve more visibility! Please pass it along to your metal friends. I’m not into metal but I love nightwish and Eivor.

Yes, it is during the concert that the 'End of a Era' DVD was filmed. It was after this concert that they gave Tarja her walking papers. That's why if you watch it closely. You see the whole way through all the guys are very somber. Because they knew what was going to happen. None of them took any joy in doing it. It was like she was a bad tooth that needed to be pulled. Painful, but necessary to the well being of the rest of the band.
Marcc, do you understand Finnish? If you do, you should watch Tarja's an hour and half long press confrence where she tells about things related to the letter and what was going in the band.
She wasn't a bad tooth, she was a tooth in a mouth that couldn't take all that biting. Tarja had given the band her notice she would leave the band, as they didn't agree to reduce the number of gigs, which Tarja said were too many for her to cope. The band just fired her earlier than Tarja's resigning was supposed to happen. She knew well it was ending, she was just hurt the way it happened.
Which NW song you shoud do? You were just in Tampere Pakkahuone, so I would suggest something from that concert. Now which song haven't you yet done? How about
