  • This short video is a "How To" for changing gear oil in the rear differential of a 2007-2013 Jeep Wrangler and install a heavy duty Teraflex cover using a Lube Locker seal. Follow Jeep's recommended maintenance schedule but if you wheel your Jeep, it is recommended to change it every 15,000 miles or after the axels have been submerged in water for a prolonged period of time. -- Jonny jkfreaks.com

    Couple things. That torque wrench is made to be held at the knurled handle end. Not in the middle of the wrench. Secondly that goo gone is an oil based solvent. Should be okay with your paper gasket. Definitely don't use goo gone with RTV.

    Don’t forget 4oz of additive if you have Trak-lok (LSD) offered with some Sahara Models (2016 75th Anniversary Edition)

    If it's a Rubicon yes, they have the same axle front and rear, as for anything else, same general principles apply.

    Why did you replace the cover with a new one?

    I have factory lockers. Do I have to get a special lube for that as well? 🧐

    I've read at least one guy on the forums who said he ruined his inner seals by getting brake parts cleaner on them. Anyone else have that experience? I used brake parts cleaner on the ring and flange to clean up my rear cover install, but I think I'll just bag the front diff to keep old rtv out when I'm cleaning up the mating surface.

      +Jason Fawbush I call BS on that. If he doused them in it and let them sit for months soaking in it, maybe you could do that. Brake cleaner evaporates so quickly though, its almost impossible.
      This is exactly how any dealer in the country (minus the lube locker and aftermarket cover) would do the service, as well as most 3rd party shops. The guy on the forums most likely screwed his seals up when removing his axles. Rule of thumb is if the axle is removed, you replace the seal. If you don't, it'll leak. Especially the designs used in the Dana 30s and 44s used by Jeep.

    Thanks for posting. Any thought on using anti seize on the bolts for the cover? Did they come off without any problems?

    Are front and rear covers the same on a 2010 JK?

    I have been looking everywhere to try and find what size /type of wrench is needed for the fill plugs. Anybody out there have an answer?

      Thor Schanck You just use a 3/8" drive wrench without a socket on it and it fits. :)

    Hey man .. thanks for the vid .. I has able to get in about 1.50 liters in before it started to over flow .. i know it calls for 2.50 liters in the manual .. the jeep was level, and just updated the gears to 4.56 .. any insight w diff in levels?

    • @alexilexi1

      Kenny Espinosa I was only able to put in 1.5l as well.. I emailed teraflex right away and they said fill to the bottom plug.. anyone else only out 1.5l and did you have any issues with that amount?

    When is the recommended mileage to change your differential fluids?

    • @cdautrey
      @cdautrey 7 років тому

      Do the initial fluid exchange at 2000-3000 miles. The gears should have scuffed off all the excess metal as they are breaking in. You'll find the drain plug...which is magnetic...loaded with fine filings. This is normal. Chunks are not. Afterwards, around 20k miles. Strong recommendation...use synthetic!

    Can anyone tell me what you use to get the fill plug out?...a 3/8" drive wrench doesn't fit?

    • @kswyg001
      @kswyg001 7 років тому

      C B 3/8" drive should fit all stock JK fill/ drain plugs.
