    I like that you were willing to admit you changed your opinion on a past review, and even make a video about it; not everyone would go to the trouble. Moreover, I like your explanation as to why dubs are quite worthwhile when done right. So yeah; excellent video. :)

    So wait......Can you even tell that the entire point of Nozaki-kun is to be a Parody of shoujo romance tropes or not? I'm still confused even after watching this. Making romantic progression isn't the point, and the biggest joke is that there are multiple ships that would work great together but they never becomes a thing because the characters are so wacky and weird. This whole thing is why I disliked your original Nozaki-kun review in the first place.

    • @NipahAllDay
      @NipahAllDay 7 років тому +8

      AnimeFlyz all I care about in this video that he say dub can improve that the sub made a mistake on.

    • @L100Meganium
      @L100Meganium 7 років тому +59

      I agree completely! I was always really irked by the fact that he seemed to have completely missed the point of Nozaki-kun in the first review, and this video was more of a "oh I guess the dub was pretty good though" thing than a realization that Nozaki-kun was supposed to be a subversion of pretty much every romance trope imaginable...
      > >;
      Also, just my two cents here, but I honestly think Nozaki-kun cannot be enjoyed in full unless you watch it subbed. It has A LOT of manga jargon and references to things that are uniquely Japanese, and I feel like it might be hard to maintain that meaning while matching mouth-flaps. There are some anime that can freely make the leap to dub because their subject matter is pretty much universal, or they take place in a created world with its own culture. Nozaki-kun is not one of those. LOL

    • @AnimeFlyz
      @AnimeFlyz 7 років тому +16

    • @Uroboro_Djinn

      It's closer to a slice of life parody than a shoujo anime. It's weird how he mentions Nichijou as an example of this being done right even though both shows are more or less equally succesful in getting their humour across.

    Thank you for being seemingly the ONLY anime youtuber that is willing to admit that dubs aren't always shit, & in many cases can be quite good. I have a very slow reading rate so when I watch subbed anime I find myself pausing & rewinding so god damn much I can't help but think I might as well be reading the manga, & it can be quite infuriating when so little of the western anime fan community shares my viewpoint. I fear sometimes it even colors the decisions on which anime get dubbed & when (If at all that is), & for someone like me to think that a show you've been looking forward to watching may never get dubbed, it can be quite depressing.

  • @AceDetective002
    @AceDetective002 7 років тому +52

    I find a lot of irony in this. When it comes to anime, I tend to watch English Dub, I watch Japanese Dub as well. I like English a bit more, but I like going both ways. I even defend English Dub for the anime.
    However in this case on Monthly Girls Nozaki kun, I like the Japanese Dub more then the English Dub. The voice for the Japanese Dub sounds so expressive and the actors get so into it, that it makes it so much more enjoyable. The English Dub however to me sounds off, it's hard to explain but their delivery on their lines sounds restrained.
    This is why it's funny that Arkada likes the English Dub more the Japanese Dub, but if he enjoyed the show then there is no problem.

    • @AceDetective002
      @AceDetective002 7 років тому

      Santiago Scarpino Tell me about it. Probably the worst English Dub I've heard was an anime called Ladies Versus Butlers. Maybe it was the show in general, but it's phenomenal how bad the English Dub is.

  • @Baoran

    I don't really have a problem with timing of jokes in subbed anime. I think it is because of 2 decades of watching subbed anime, I have learned basic understanding of what they say in most jokes even without reading the subtitles. They don't usually use very complicated statements in jokes when the comedic effect is usually brought up with just a word or two.

    I was expecting Arkada would access that this anime is a parody of every shoujo anime...that's why it's so brilliant to me. They took all the tropes and archetypes, twisted them and made fun of them.
    The cheeky, smug badboy? Turned into a self-conscious, fake, goofy nerd. The hottest, prince-like, flirtatious guy on the school? Turned into a tomboy ( also joke with the girly look some male characters have). The badass, hot-blooded, manly badboy? Another tomboy. The cold, controlled and quiet guy? Well...
    Not to mention, the main female was a parody of shoujo manga MCs with those dramatic, overreactive girly personalities that's a cliché.

  • @lyger8742
    @lyger8742 7 років тому +163

    I completely disagree with your comment on Nozaki's character in the sub. He is portrayed as a loveable goof. The whole propose of his charcter is that looks are deceiving as his appearance makes him seem "cool, distant, serious and your typical ikkemen (handsome) hero". The whole comedy surrounding his character is how dorky he actually is despite his appearance and that is what makes him so likeable. I dont watch the dubs as i believe that watching a show the way it is made originally is the best way to enjoy it. Also most of the time english voices make me cringe super hard :p

    Hey Arkada, I am glad you changed your mind, and I understand why too. (at least relating to the Nozaki and Sakura aspect of the anime)
    I believe a large reason why you preferred the dub in this instance is because of the way your brain interprets language into meaning.
    There are at least two factors we use when interpreting language, tone(or the manner of speaking) and content(the words used). I believe you place a higher emphasis on the words used, because you always articulate, and you choose your words wisely. In other words your tone emphasizes the words you use, when I listen to you I generally don't derive a different meaning from your tone, all the information your trying to convey are on the words expressed.
    Here is the rub with subtitles, is that they are usually not faithful to the phonetic delivery of that language, so we will miss out on nuances of the language, like articulation and word-play.
    In this case Nozaki being like a kind ogre was not conveyed to you as clearly in the sub because they didn't choose the right framing of the words, and you couldn't rely on the articulation to pick up on that nuance.
    I feel like I am the opposite of you, because when I interpret language the 'how' a thing is said is more important than the words used. (and in English dubbing we always use simple words anyway, so weak word + reserved tone = unmotivated performance)
    So for me Nozaki(in the sub) was tremendously oblivious, frighteningly innocent, but face-value genuine which was basically like a slap in the face, because he also genuinely cared about his fellows and his demeanor didn't show that, but I could hear it.
    Obviously because English can be a strong-typed language, the tone can sometimes not matter, hence why careful selection of words adds flavor to a person's meaning. /end text, you can stop here
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    To Reader, (yes, YOU who are reading this) You no longer have to read past this point, i am keeping this here for historic reasons(why? I don't know, i guess I put too much work in this to not want to delete it)
    Behold! A lesson in catering an idea to an audience!
    Original draft below, prime criticism: "Why would Arkada care about me? Shouldn't I start with how it is relevant to him?"
    - - edits thus to the form above, took the final paragraph and made that the opener, re-arrange ideas for integretity and delivery
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hey Arkada, I am glad you changed your mind, and I understand why too.
    For me I get a more empathetic response usually from the dub, because I interpret audio as a frequency.
    So I hear something and have to interpret it in my head. For whatever reason, it is more important to me 'how' a thing is said, rather then the words themselves(usually).
    Maybe I have trouble empathizing with English, or maybe because I can pay more attention to nuances in tone and pitch that I have trouble being convinced by the actor, and generally English dubs are much more reserved than what I can hear in the Japanese dub.
    Regardless I think you are the opposite of me, the content of what is said is more important to you, and that makes sense to me. You always articulate and choose your words carefully. And subtitles are not faithful to the presentation of the phonetics of that language, so we miss out on articulations, and word-play. I also think English's use of subjunctive attributes to this, because there are always better and stronger words to convey our point; but does that matter in Japanese?

    [Dub available on Netflix] Thanks GR. I just binged the series based on your recommendation. Tried the 2 episodes of the sub years ago, but trying the dub now made it worth the watch. I only knew one of the dub cast going in, but it was a solid localization effort. And thanks for the shoutout to JubyPhonic's channel. Now onto Nichijou. I've seen the original subbed, but the dub clips look pretty solid. Hopefully it's another solid localization.

    Hey! I like translator's notes that explain things! It means that next time an anime makes a joke based off the same thing, I'll be able to understand what they're saying, rather than having to deal with the translator's attempt of coming up with a different joke of the same value. If I hadn't read a translator's note about the Japanese belief that sneezing is an indication of someone somewhere thinking/talking about you, I would have missed out on so many things in so many animes.

    okay, wow, this might explain some of my problems I had with this show.
    I absolutely love sgn (or mgn I guess). It's obviously not perfect, but it was mostly my kinda funny. But whenever I would recommend it, people always came back with like warm opinions. I thought maybe I was just odd, but now it makes sense.
    I was raised with my Japanese uncle very prominent in my life. I learned to speak Japanese with my cousin, so subtitles were never a big deal (which is good because I'm hella dyslexic). The only thing I need translation for is writing. I really suck at reading because I learned to speak phonetically, but that's beside the point.
    I will need to buy the English dub so that my friends can properly enjoy it.

      I see dubs and subs are different things so comparing two is nonsense at least for me.
      Because the acting for dubs and the changing in contexts are not checked and directed by the original directors or the original source material authors.
      It can't be helped though since they only speak Japanese but I always like to know the thoughts of the original creators so I prefer sub more than dub.
      That doesn't mean subs are better though.
      Dubs are somewhat like remakes for me.

    I'm glad this guy was able to enjoy this anime. That's whatbis most important. I'm thankful he brought up the localization issue. If I want a "localised' slice of lif anime, I can watch some stuff on Cartoon network, nickelodeon, or whatever animation is playing on Fox. If I want to watch anime though, want to see and hear what isn't local.
