Alright this is a fairly simple project, a few weeks ago while taking the Malibu skier out for a rip. I noticed that the steering was a tad bit stiff, i knew at that point with the play in the rudder that i'd have to do a rebuild. I got lucky this time as the rudder on the older malibu boats are either a plastic shim with o-rings or a 5/16 packing. I got lucky with the 5/16 packing. Anyways enjoy the video this will go over how to take apart and put back together again
it has a new 350, 350 hp from Michigan Motoz and yes it is a old 1990 Malibu Skier, its a ok boat for what I do. Our summer season is so short this year we didn't get on the lake till July and early sept we'll have to winterize as the weather will change. Sucks when you have winter almost 8 months a year
hello thanks for the vid can u tell me what kind of packing and where to find it. thanks
you said you were going to tell us about the nut below the packing nut ? is it a jamb nut for securing the packing nut ?
wondering if the rudder should be bolted to shaft i had to straighten it out due to hitting oyster bed and was wondering if i should put a bolt thru it
Can I use 1/4 packing? I’m having trouble finding 5/16
how's your shaft packing, do you plan on doing a DIY vid for that? I need to change mine on my Malibu...
i bought an 83 madtercraft, it looks just like ur set up, it came with the rudder off cause it was bent, i fixed it, and redid the packing only to realize im missing the keyway and pin, is there any other parts to this or is that it?
Can anyone help me i have a shepiro late 80's ski boat. the hull has two fins inline around the middle of it..it has some serious issues with the turning of it. basically you turn the boat and the hull just leans over and keeps wanting to go straight. it does turn but not sharp and hard like most ski inboards. it leans so much if i turn anymore it will probably flip.
The boats an inboard with a prop then rudder. it has always been like this since i got it second hand, i haven't hit anything. it also turns right better. the steering has alot of play. i was thinking maybe the two straight fins make the boat want to keep going straight so when you tjs leaniurn it results in the hull leaning over ..
there is lots more jeep videos coming, it's just been slow with the videos as i'm working on sanding the body getting it ready for paint and I don't want to bore people so much with the body work. there will be a stereo install, new rock crawler bumpers with winch, video on u-joints,fuel filter, troubleshooting a 02 code, tranny flush and a whole bunch of other videos to come
Thank you sir 🙏
Hell yea brother 🤙
where do I find the 5/16 packing? And is all there is to it?
Smart with the jack
I have a 98 Malibu vlx. Stiff steering at speed. Already changed steering cable so I know that's not it. Do you know if I also have the 5/16th packing? Thanks!
That's just physics. You see, when you turn the rudder to an angle in the water you create more surface area and some resistance which will cause the steering to be a little stiff. If you turn the rudder more there will be more surface area in contact with the water and if you go faster it will also increase. That's why it might go a bit stiff.
Thank you
the nut below the packing nut is just a jam nut sorry about that
My rudder has lots of play but also I can't turn to the right is this the cause of this?
it's possible but also check your cables in case one is sticking, but a bent rudder will do this as well
darrick heskett n
my shaft packing is ok but I am in the mists of changing it as it doesn't cost much for packing, and there will be a video for that as well
