How to Get Started Scalloping - What You NEED!

- Here is a quick walkthrough of everything you need to start scalloping. Scalloping is a fun, family activity that brings you closer to nature. We have made it a point to do an annual scallop trip with friends and family and made some of our best memories doing so. Scalloping is excellent for beginners and advanced water babies. Typically you are only snorkeling in three to six feet of water. Some of the items you need include a good mask and snorkel. I like the snorkel that helps keep water from entering your breath tube. It would help if you also had some neoprene socks; the socks protect your ankles from chafing and discomfort from your fins. The constant rubbing on bare skin can irritate the skin. A mesh bag will allow you to add your scallops to the bag as you go; this way, you don't have to keep swimming back to the boat to unload. Grandpa always said to work smarter, not harder.
Remember, safety comes first. Purchase a nice visible dive flag to let other boaters know you are in the water and to use caution. I hope these tips help get you started scalloping and, most importantly, get out there, be safe, and have fun. Comment below. Have you ever gone scalloping?

Just a huge heads up warning to any going after shellfish! Back in the late 90's my son and I were wading in Tampa Bay looking for shellfish and I came so close to drowning it's not funny! We each had landing nets with a big bounty of shellfish and we had to swim a distance of oh maybe 200 ft to get back to wade able water! The sure weight of those shellfish almost drowned each of us because they were just like anchors and very quickly took us down approximately 20 to bottom! We used the long handles to push us off bottom so we could surface much quicker! After several attempts we each had to dump our bounty just to survive! May I add we were each excellent swimmers and in great condition! Don't attempt to swim over any deep water with a bunch of shellfish because the weight will kill you 😢😮
