The Longest Day | GMBN Vs The West Highland Way

- This isn't another race, it's not a mountain bike challenge with a hidden meaning, no this is a plain and simple epic ride! Rich Payne wanted some is straight-up exploring, to venture somewhere has never been before, somewhere remote, somewhere beautiful. The West Highland Way in Scotland is just that! What better day to do this than the longest day of the year and because well it's the longest day I need a cycle computer that can go the distance with me, which is exactly where the new Garmin Edge 1040 Solar comes in.

Have you been on any epic rides this year? If so where did you go and what made it epic for you? 💭👇
I haven’t hade a super epic ride yet but it will Komme soon, i feel it🤙😁
80 km gravel gravel is my furtest ride so far this year.
360km 6000m+, between Italy and Slovenia with 300 other guys with the same problem🤣
Actually just did the west highland way in early May! Beautiful video for a beautiful trail, thanks for posting!
@@lufo5 what event is that?
Outstanding Rich, one of the best GMBN vids ever - Milngavie
=mull guy
Love it how folk say it when not from these parts😭
Thanks so much, Simon! Safe riding! 👊
Hope your knees are feeling better now, Rich! That was a gorgeous trail and a fantastic video - great effort all around
Thanks for the support, Alex! We've treated Rich to some recovery time now! 😂 He certainly smashed this challenge, though! 👊
A solar bike computer seems the most logical thing ever.
Solar technology in a bike computer is so practical! Garmin smashed it with the Edge Solar! 👍
Why are all the clips in the wrong order they jump back and forward all over the place one second its up at the top of Loch Lomond and the next it is 30km back at conic hill
I doubt most people would notice, myself included!
Finally some proper mtb footage and not only descending-at-blooming-speed vid! Keep it up!
Tests a solar device, goes to Scotland?! 🤔🤷🏻😂
You make a very good point!😂 Although we still managed to charge the Garmin from the small amount of sunlight that Scotland offered us! It's a great bit of kit! 😉
@@gmbn if anything it showed how game changing the tech is, impressive 👍🏻
It's great to see GMBN finally cover the West Highland Way, haven't done the full distance but have done various sections from Milngavie to Loch Lomond, Tyndum to Bridge of Orchy and Bridge of Orchy to Glencoe, an excellent adventure with plenty of challenging riding and beautiful scenery, thank you for sharing, enjoy watching this episode! 🚵😁🤙
I was prompted to check this out after seeing the sad headline today about the untimely passing of Rab Wardell this week. RIP Rab! His record is 9h 14m but 10h44m is still a great time considering 'it wasn't a race/challenge!' Nice-one Rich & the GMBN team
Great video, some interesting pronunciation of Scottish place names!
Haha! The English accent doesn't help us out that much! 😂
No, it doesn't look like fun.
Thumbs up and thanks for the amazing ride and stunning views. Looked like a spectacular ride. Could have done without all the Garmin content though (I get it, they pay the bills). I'm sure it's a fantastic device for the 800 EUR it costs lol. Don't think I'd ever want to put that much money on a bike computer, just on principle.
You wouldn’t have to worry about ruining the shoes if you had kept the Crocs on. 🤙
Very true! 😂
Having walked the WHW a couple of times, I have a lot of respect for riding it in a day. I think it was a sensible move to lift the ban on bikes on the Way a few years back.
Fantastic ride. Thanks for the ride along, Rich! 👍
Visiting the UK for an epic ride is definitely on my bucket list.
Unfortunately, not as easy as it should be here in the States because of it's car-centtic society and infrastructure.
Thanks Rich!! Great ride and video coverage. I have the same XC bike and now looking forward to my own epic rides. Love these types of videos. Makes me want to be there.
Yes! Another adventure of Payne! I'm not much for the gap jumping och bike park stuff, albeit cool to look at. Your epics Richard, are truly inspirational!
Nice one Rich.
Filming on West Highland Way. Ask a local how you pronounce starting town name, cos every Englishman murder's it.
Would love to do something like this! You make it look so easy, great ride rich looking forward to the next epic.
FFS rich, de yer homework, Mullguy.... 😂🤣 epic trip but. 😎
Come on mate. It's pronounced Mull-Guy and Kinloch-Leavin'
You are an absolute beast Rich. Great ride. I still don‘t understand how I managed to go from 100% to switched off in 8h on my Garmin 830.
Mine does the same, which is worse than my old 810! I think Garmin state battery life is 16 hours…..
What about the Loch Lomond bike a bike section? Suspiciously missing from the video...
That was some effort Rich, very well done!
Forget Scotland, expensive from dull, damp and midges 🦗 Why? When you could go to France or Spain☀️☀️🌡 With better food, weather and better VFM.
I’m sure it’s been mentioned but milngavie is pronounced mull guy. I’ve cycled the west highland way twice now north to south. The east side of Loch Lomond sucks lol.
So when is GMBN coming to the US and riding The Whole Enchilada in Moab Utah? 7000' of decent over 27 miles!
At $1200AUD its a never at that price from me. Most peoples phones can do all this and far far more at HALF the price. Garmin needs to WTFU.
RIP Rab
Kinlochleven pronounced Kinloch leaven. Just another sassenach murdering our names.
Love the video and looking to do this run myself later in the year but was shouting at my phone with the pronounceation of Milngavie and Kinlochleven 🤣. Good effort on the ride though.
Can you imagine trying this on a long distance path south of the border? Never take for granted the Right to Roam, it's a rare privilege in this world.
I recommend the Black Isle Brewery as seen at the end of the video. Great beer (Black Isle Blonde is superb) and excellent pizzas! Needed after the WHW or climbing Ben Nevis.
^fact- great pizza and beers
Would have put money on that mis-pronunciation of Milngavie 🙈
That's eBike and flats territory 😁 Good effort!
Sales sales sales sales sales
When Rich do try for the fastest known time on that route maby something for GCN+
I have done this route and the hike a bike partaround the loch takes all the fun out of it IMO !
I don't mind a bit of sponsored content, but the amount you shill for Garmin is obnoxious
Have you removed the route from Komoot? Just get a broken link message
Back in the 80's catseye had a cycle computer. It had speed, cadence, odo, think there was another mode. It may not have the options that the Garmin has, but not the 1st. To have solar.
Yep. It was the Cateye Solar CC-2000 and I had one. It was great for that era.
Yeah I'm pretty sure there have been a few; it's hardly a new concept. I guess Garmin can claim it's the first ever GPS-enabled solar computer but it ain't the world's first by a long stretch.
@@davidf2281 Aye, and doubt it's even that - the Trimm One was out a couple of years back, and not sure there haven't been others.
@@fukawitribe Looks like the Trimm One 'lite' is still available -- I'm kind of tempted to buy one!
Ah fantastic !! I did this on a mountain bike in May, and it was amazing. weather didn't play ball, but we didn't care. Hard work along loch Lomond though.
Brilliant, Mark! Yeah, Loch Lomond is a tough stint on the ride! 👍
any details on the bike / kit you where using?
Rich was shredding on the Orbea Oiz. Although for this epic, Rich had a support van, so he didn't need much gear apart from his Garmin computer. 👍
Is the music ‘nah nah hey hey goodbye’ by Bananarama?
Loved yir pronounciations - sheer class mate
Haha this comment has "translate to English" 🤣
"Miln -Gavie" ITS MAW-GUY xD
Rich that was epic, what an awesome ride and what a beautiful place.Go enjoy your well earned pint.
Thanks, Raphael! Rich smashed this epic ride! He definitely deserved that pint! 🙌
Hey Rich, were you happy with your tyre choice of Vittoria Mezcal/Barzo? I am contemplating riding the same combination or only mezcal/barzo for front and rear during my alp crossing from Slovenia to France. I want tyres that roll fast because I need to be efficient (like the mezcal) but also need the grip to hold on to more lose terrain. I am not looking for Enduro tyres and want to ride a lighter XC setup. Thanks in advance! :)
Another garmin promotional videos😒
Yeewwwwwwwww
🤘
Rich you are a machine. Well done mate hope your knees ok. I really enjoy your edits, keep-em coming.
Thanks, Pete! We're so glad you loved this sort of content! Rich is having some well-earned recovery time! 😅
Does anyone know the name of the dainese jacket?
Biggest problem with a lot of the "natural trails" in Scotland is many are just walkers tracks/drovers paths, only have to see the reviews on Trailforks for Torridon/Beinn Damph to see how generally shite they are and way too much HaB(og) . Thanks for this vid, I'll strike that one off of the to do list ! (It's a pity many of these tracks can't be improved and tracks joining up different catchments put in to create and improve off road touring/bikepacking/gravel ...Living in Kincraig it would be good to get over to the Tromie/Braemar/Dulnain/Findhorn/Loch Ness without dragging the bike through bog...and even the trails around here that have been "improved" have been done to f&£k up the biking with razor sharp water bars that even the walkers despise, like Carn Ban Mor and Bynack More!!!)
Thanks for the video, good job!!! We did the WHW this year by foot. It was challenging. As you noticed as well mentally... the walk alongside Loch Lomond was tiring.
Completed this in 19 hours last year
Well done you made that look so easy
The hike a bike along Loch Lomond has got to be the worst section
That's a strong effort, Stephen! Rich was unstoppable on this epic ride!
@@gmbn
I was broken for days after it
Rich is a machine 💪🚴
Can’t wait to see his next challenge🙌
Wow...91 miles. I daily ride about 25 miles on my local bike path with an elevation change 690 feet and I'm just worn out by the time I'm finished. Granted Rich is 10 years younger than me, but I'm still impressed, those trails you're riding are brutal.
I've walked the full length twice in Winter, gruelling terrain once you pass Loch Lomond.
Flats and walking shoes next time will knock an hour off🤣👍🏼 good effort 👏🏼
Great ride that Rich and straight after Globalbikefestival 👊
Love Scotland (my dad is Scottish) so scenic but I have yet to ride there.
Awesome stuff #GMBN
We bikepacked up the Highwood Pass in the mountains SW of Calgary, Alberta. Closed (until mid June) highway is a riding paradise for a week or so in late spring as it thaws. Rode halfway in with full bikepacking rigs, surrounded by carbon fibre road bikes. Then halfway up we just dropped into the ditch down to a meadow, then rode in to a perfect mountain camp site. Next day two rides up to and above snow level, hiking, sky watching while sipping wine (yay for a Mule trailer). Best part was introducing a friend to bikepacking.
Damn, I missed you guys by two days. I did the West Highland Way on my 10 year old 26" hardtail. The trail that runs along the north east side of Loch Lomond was pain in the ass. (I bought an Orbea Oiz after that Scotland trip, lol)
Curious to know which bike you prefer when compared to your previous winter solstice ride. Canyon or Orbea?
Gnarly track there! Wonder if you use an ebike will it last that long and help you in the climbs? Guess not just remmembered those things are heavy.
It would be fantastic if this was on GCN+ so we don't have to watch insulting commercials. Does everyone else have to sit through online Casino ads that make it seem as if your life will be so exciting if you sit and stare at your phone losing money to an app??? Anyone else insulted by misleading ads??
One giant add.......................
Now with all that hike a bike I’m so glad I bought an emtb great video tho. I’m from Huntly (north east Scotland) and I’ve only been to fort William twice (once with my MTB years ago) shame on me.
Done the WHW last year from Fort william to Milngavie as meeting walkers head on with bike I found was better than relying on a loud hub and shouting rider all the time. Really tough ride loch lomond was hardest part by far. Great Video Rich well done as I know how hard it was even though having a team behind you is a wee bit of a cheat.haha.
The man is a machine!!
I have to hope the pronunciation of milngavie was an attempt to get eijits in the comment section telling you it’s pronounced milngavie and not milngavie…… mullguy.
Great video.
These Epic Ride videos are probobly my favorite videos on the GMBN channel
Rich can't as bad as Ollie Bridgewood for running. Ollie even vowed the never run on camera again. He did run again on camera. However, not in the EMBN video. When he complained about a gravel climb.
Wow ten hours on the bike is alot i do five and a half hour rides all tech single track and thats enough for me we just had our shortest day southern hemisphere am sick of finnishing every ride in the dark ha ha , i feel you with the carbon shoes I wrecked a new pair of full carbon shoes with a ten km walk . Sorry i cant say were i ride as every thing down here is illegal 🤔
Awesome - this is the kind of content I subscribe for!
Thanks for the support, Sam! Safe riding!
Love your videos overall but hate the thumbnails with red frames. You cannot see if you have looked or not if there is this frame. Will simply lost in the space of youtube.
No gloves, no kit just in case of bad weather, no food, no extra water?
Hey Pete! Rich had a support van, driven by the crew with all the essentials he needed. 👍
Wow, super! And respect for doing that stuff on Mezcals and carbon soles 🙂
Looking at doing this in August and I'm sure I saw a video ages ago where a Dad with a younger rider took a detour round Loch Lomond to cut out the hike a bike section, my Mrs rides an ebike (to keep up with older teenagers!) and it would be handy to have an alternative route if anyone has any suggestions or is it just stay on the road?
XC Marathon rocks!!
What a ride Rich, unbelievable scenery but 11hrs on the seat 😳.
I would have to break it up but maybe one day 😎
Amazing job Rich, looks an incredible ride. Now to spend Sunday convincing my wife that this is something she’d love to do with me. 😁
I was in the Loch Lomond area many years ago and always thought that it would be a great place to go and do some riding and this video just verifies that! Looks absolutely stunning viewing it via riding a bike. I may just have to go back and give it a whirl myself. Epic ride and great video feature again GMBN!
Good job, I did this a few years ago wi some pals, took two n half days. The east coast of Loch Lomond is shit to say the least. A bike may have ended up in the loch at one point!
Thanks Rich and crew...BUT...you made that look too easy..a lot of what you were able to ride , mere mortals fear to tread .
Just beautiful - wonder if there is a chance to get your gps track in my hands? ;)
This trail is now a dream trail of mine. Thank you for posting this epic Garmin commercial...
What a great ride. Love Kinlochleven, stayed there before a 3 Peaks attempt - just stunning scenery.
That s amazing! Did you ride the section from inversnaid to Beinglas?
I'm not surprised the crash alert went off for an emergency stop - my 530 goes off every other commute stopping smoothly at lights!
Loch Lomond is a brutal stretch with a pack full of gear so I can imagine a awkward shaped bike over the obstical course terrain was a struggle
Absolutely gorgeous out there
I bet it's nice and awesome to have a friend with you and I've never seen a pheasant run like that either they're supposed to fly away not run like a roadrunner
Absolutely beautiful views just stunning and I want that cycling computer how can I test this out how where do I go to get something like that to test out for my bike packing trips
Very inspiring ride. For sure i’ll be trying to fit this one in the schedule somehow.
Good effort, I walked 10 miles of it a few days after you, it’s on my list to ride! It’s an epic place
Well done dude great effort & vid, big respects for not quitting 👍🏻
wrong shoes )))
That was definitely an awesome beautiful trail with all the gorgeous scenery to boot
WELL DONE and thank you Rich!!
Sweet
Thats some going doing that in 10 hours!!
Rich is never one to disappoint on those epic adventures!
Milngave pronounced Milguy :)
