Billy Piper was a teenage pop-star. This was her first acting role and nobody expected her to be any good. Turned out, she is a fantastic actress and has gone on to do some great stuff since.
Yeah, people don't realize that the BBC crew actually do their due diligence when hiring main actors. She wasn't picked on a whim, and neither was any of the other cast, under any of the three directors. She auditioned, together with hundreds of other women, for this role. She nailed the audition and then BBC put her in classes to make good talent into excellent performance. And this is why I don't get the hate practically all new actors on the show get. Whether it's The Doctor or a companion that changes, when the choice of actor is revealed, all of the UK goes into "they must be mad" mode and starts ranting about how bad the show will become. They have nearly a century of experience, they know their stuff!
The more I think about it, the more I love that the first different time period we visit is when the earth gets destroyed, reminding us that the earth is finite which makes every other adventure that takes place on earth that much more meaningful. Any show that gets me to appreciate the real world a little bit more is always good in my book
12:01 remember how he told Rose how he can feel the earth move when he’s standing still. This was the same kind of thing. He could feel the speed of the blades and felt when it was right. If he opened his eyes his sight would’ve messed him up. I find sometimes when I drop something I can’t see and reach at the same time I look at the object then close my eyes and reach for it. In my mind I can still see what I’m reaching for.
I love that scene with Rose's mum after the Doctor fiddles with Rose's phone. The music, Rose realizing the gravity of the situation she's in and that life is only temporary, and it's such a genuine, realistic interaction between mother and daughter. It's part of what made me fall in love with this show despite generally not liking sci-fi. It's such a brief moment but it was easily the highlight of the episode for me.
I loved that moment so much. I hated having to cut it down for the shortened video here on UA-cam. In the full reaction, I make a comment about how it must be such a grounding thing for Rose in that moment to hear her mom's voice. So beautiful!
Your reactions are so delightful! I always get excited whenever I see someone new reacting blind to this show, and your commentary is really plesant to watch, I like it when reactors find balance between watching quietly and commenting!
Thank you so much!!!! I always feel like I'm either talking way too much or not nearly enough. lol I had never edited video prior to starting this channel last month so, I'm still finding my stride and hoping to strike a good balance. So, feedback like this is very nice to get. :)
As someone who has grown up with this show its vewry hard for me to imagine what it would be like to see it with a fresh pair of eyes. I'm so excited to see you experience this absolute gem of a show, I hope you love it as much as I do 🙏😅
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you'll be joining me on this journey. I don't take lightly how much this show means to people and for how long it's been part of their lives. So, I hope I do it justice. :)
Jack, I found this show in my 30's. Prior to that, I'd only heard the name and that it was British scifi. I don't know if it hits everyone the same on their first watch through. But it made a huge impact on me. I can't imagine what it was like to have a show like this informing how you grew up!
@@phoenixfire124 my dad wasn't really around when I was growing up and so I always say that I was raised by my mum and Dr. Who. I am very thankful for this shows impact on my life and wouldn't change it for the world!
@@jackhustwayte4567 Me, too. I'm sorry it wasn't easier for you as a child. I saw somewhere (in a fan video) a discussion on the Doctor being a role great model for how to be a man without being emotionally repressed. It was a very interesting point of view that made sense to me. I have to say if that'sthe case, it sounds like you had the best male role model in your life.
Ah yes! Always have tissues handy - you never know when this show will hit you in the feels (or make you laugh, or be hiding behind the sofa😀). Eccleston and Billie Piper (Rose) do have great chemistry. This was her first acting role, having been till now a bit of a teen pop idol, and she does a great job, while he of course by then was an experienced actor with a long career of dramatic roles. I believe Eccleston took her under his wing a bit and gave her a lot of support and guidance, and she has continued on as an outstanding actress in a wide variety of roles.
Well, I cried in the third episode as well so I'm guessing I should just expect an emotional punch to the gut in every episode. lol I can't believe this was her first acting role! She's so good! I also had no idea she was a teen pop start. I really want to look up some of her music, but I'll guess I'll just have to wait so I don't risk seeing any spoilers. Thank you for the bit about how he took her under his wing and helped her out. That makes me really happy. :)
@@BritanyBinges To be fair, Billie Piper had been educated at a prestigious theatre school before she was talent-spotted and turned into a "manufactured" pop star in her mid teens. Her first love was acting, though, and I think she's a very talented actor indeed.
@@sallyatticum Indeed, it was her biggest role yet. I'm just pointing out that she was a theatre-school trained actor who was "cast" as a pop singer when she was a teenager. Some people apparently think she was a pop singer who turned out to be surprisingly good at acting, but Billie was always an actor at heart.
Keep a listen for Rose's Theme, a beautiful and sad piece of music that you hear when Rose is looking at the destroyed Earth. It crops up from time to time.
Yes, always have a box of tissues ready. I hardly ever cry watching tv shows, but I will bawl like a baby when it comes to certain episodes of this series. And yeah, there definitely silly things in this show, especially in these early episodes as they get the feel of things. But never take a silly episode for granted, they have a tendency to punch you in the feels every time. The Ninth Doctor and Rose really play well off of each other, Rose is a fan favorite and you're beginning to see why.
I've learned very quick that cheesy (and even silly) doesn't mean I can let my guard down. It feels like every time I do, I'm crying again. lol I'm definitely seeing why Rose is a fan favorite. She's already gone on me quite a bit and I have a feeling her character is going to have some massive growth.
It's preferable to not watch the "Next Time" as it contains... well... the next episode, which basically spoilers. and we... as a community, in a way... are not a fan of spoilers... Also, like I always said to myself, a great show will make me cry in 3 ways. Happy and sweet moment crying, emotionally wreck crying, and laugh to much that you'll end up crying.
Thank you for the heads up about the "next time" segment. That first episode is the only one I've seen. I want to remain as spoiler-free as possible so I've been quick to pause the video before it can start playing. :) It takes a lot to make cry from laughter, but the other two are pretty easy. So, I anticipate a lot of tears (both happy and sad).
I knew you were a Brooklyn Nine-Nine fan! It was the "noice" in your other comment that gave it away. I almost replied with "Toit", but didn't want you to think I was psycho if you hadn't seen it. HAHA!
@@BritanyBinges ngl, I feel like I have used "noice" even before I started Brooklyn Nine Nine, lol. I just started watching it like few months ago, so... :v
I'm glad you enjoyed this episode. I think it gets overlooked by many fans, but it's always been a favourite of mine, and those final few minutes with Rose and the Doctor get me every time! No problem if you hadn’t liked it, though, as the nature of the show is that each story is different in content, tone, etc, and a story I enjoy might not work for you (and vice versa).
Thank you!! Based on the comments for my first reaction, it does seem like this episode is underestimated. I get the cheese-factor people were talking about, but it was pretty complex from an emotional standpoint (and I definitely wasn't expecting that). If an episode can hit me in the feels (like this one and episode three), chances are I'll love it. :)
Oh! If you need tissues for that episode... you will be in pieces for some others! This episode's tone was very inspired by The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy with a little bit of Galaxy Quest thrown in.
YES! The scenes with the spinning blades gave me total Galaxy Quest vibes when Jason had to go through the chompers! That's actually what made me think it felt like an old-school scene and ask if it basically a call-back to a scene in Classic Who.
@@BritanyBinges No, I don't think it's a call-back to Classic Who (as far as I know.) The series was still quite campy back in the 2005 season, so I think it really comes from there!
Love your reactions so far. You're right that Leian Piper, or "Billie Piper" as she's better known, is a brilliant actress, but she had previously been a pop singer, so Doctor Who was her first major acting role. In fact, Billie Piper holds the record as the youngest person to top the UK charts with their debut single. She was 15 when her debut single 'Because We Want To' topped the Official Singles Chart in June 1998. I remember it well. I was seven at the time and it was everywhere on the radio and the music video with her dancing in some random street was always on TV. She went on to have a fair number of hits on the Official Singles Chart including 'Honey to the Bee', She Wants You' and two more number ones 'Girlfriend' and 'Day and Night'.
Another great video. You make very insightful comments and questions, it always makes a more interesting reaction. And talk as much as you want to at the end. Tbh I much prefer when a reactor talks through their thoughts rather than just "Thanks for watching, bye" as soon as the credits roll.
Thank you so much!!! It's always bothered me as a viewer when they don't offer any additional thoughts at the end as well. However, now that I'm on the reactor side of things, I understand that it's likely a strategic decision they've made based on how UA-cam decides to show a video to more/new people. So, I'm going to aim for striking a balance between the two for the time being to see how it goes.
@@BritanyBinges You made me tear up as I was watching, I love shows where I get so invested in characters and stories that I cry. It's happened with Supernatural for me as well.
@@Feena191 Aww. I like that you teared up with me! It means I wasn't too boring. lol Yes, I always say that if a show can make me cry, then it's done its job. Even on my I lost count of number rewatch of Supernatural, certain episodes still make me bawl my eyes out every single time.
So glad you’re getting into it. Keep in mind, they haven’t even hit their stride yet. It just gets better and better….. but you should always keep a tissue handy when watching Dr Who. Even when no one dies they have a way of just hitting ya right in the feelers.
Billie Paul Piper (born Leian Paul Piper, 22 September 1982) is an English actress, filmmaker, and former singer who recorded under the names Billie and Billie Piper. She first appeared as a performer in Scratchy & Co at 13. She originally became famous as a singer and released her debut single "Because We Want To" at 15, which made her the youngest female artist ever to enter No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart. Her follow-up single "Girlfriend" also entered at number one. In 1998, Piper released her debut studio album, Honey to the B, which was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. Following a second album which spawned her third UK No. 1 single, "Day & Night", Piper announced in 2003 that she had abandoned her music career to focus on an acting career.
Thank you so much for all of this information! It reminded me that I wanted to look up her music and I'm currently listening to the Best Of album now. Pre-teen/teenage me would've definitely been a fangirl. lol That's a very impressive musical career and it had to take a lot of courage to give it up for acting. I'm glad it seems to have worked out for her. :)
If you’re crying at this episode, you’re gonna need an entire box of tissues when you get to the really emotional episodes 😊. If you’re especially worried about spoilers you might want to get in the habit of avoiding the ‘next time’ bits at the end of each episode because sometimes they give away too much.
Oh, I'm fully prepared to be a wreck. I already have a feeling that I will be at least in the finale of this series because I won't be ready to see the ninth doctor go. :( And, don't worry, I've haven't seen any of the "next time" bits since the first episode and I won't be watching them. :)
@@gregweatherup9596 Yes! I'm honestly a little concerned that switching actors will have a big impact on my enjoyment of the show. But, I'll guess I'll just have to wait and see. :)
@@BritanyBinges if you ever don’t like the chemistry between 2 actors on this show the good thing is the combination of actors will change in just a season or 2.
Back when Doctor Who returned, there weren't many younger people who knew much about the show, now I can't imagine there's many people who don't know about it, so it's great that you have so much to see.
Doctor Who is just so well written in the first 6 seasons. Russell T. Davies, who wrote this and acted as showrunner, is probably the best TV writer working in the UK today. And it shows.
Well, I'm only halfway through series two, but I have to agree with you so far. I'm reacting to another show and the level of writing between the two is night and day.
Thanks for tip! I'm four episodes in and I've already noticed two references to a/the "bad wolf". I don't know who or what that is, but it seems clear it will be a thing at some point. (Don't tell me either way. lol)
Only Doctor Who can break your heart to dust leave you weeping like a child and let you break out in laughter of pure joy se ones later. You are in fora ride. I hope you will watch all of the episodes
This is show is really something special, it's silly in the best kind of way. With those great emotional moments that will come out and attack without warning! Series 1-10 had a composer called Murray Gold do the music which is honestly the best music I've ever heard in any TV show, and it only gets better (as with everything with this show) as it goes on! Really glad you're enjoying it :)
Yeah, those emotional gut punches really come out of nowhere. lol Although, even when I see it coming (as I did in episode three), it doesn't really matter. It gets me right in the feels. lol I don't typically notice the score for tv shows, but it did stand out to me in this one. I'm glad the composer is around for a while! :)
I like the first episode but this was the one that hook me. Btw... I think each alien would have a different mindset about what a gift would be. So anything is valid as a gift. =)
Super glad you're enjoying the show 😊 And hearing your thoughts at the end is great, so don't worry about keeping it short! And yes, definitely keep the tissues ready.
I'm so glad that you're enjoying this show! It can be a little silly at times, but at it's heart its a drama about the people and about the Doctor himself. You will be surprised how many times they hit you in the feels, and make you cry. This show is just beautiful. Keep it up! :)
Yeah, the drama and heaviness really caught me off-guard in this one. I recorded episode 3 three during the same session and it caught me off-guard as well. So, now I've learned my lesson. Silly doesn't mean I won't crying by the end of the episode. lol I'm excited for episode 3 to be published on Friday! :)
@@BritanyBinges Me too! I'm glad you're doing a few in a row. They really do flow well together. You'll be surprised at how much changes and how those changes affect the show. Keep up the good work and great reactions!
So glad you have stayed. Starting with Classic Who, a lot of TV Programmes and Movies got their ideas from Doctor Who. Everything is explained at the proper time. I love the Comedy and Action. Great Reactions.
Yeah, there was a line in this that was almost identical to a pretty iconic line in Hunger Games, so I can already see the influence it's had. Thanks for the kind words! :)
@@BritanyBinges You are most welcome. The funny thing was, three days ago when Grocery shopping I bumped into two of my Friends. While we were waiting for our Taxis outside, we were talking about Movies that had taken an idea from Classic Doctor Who. There were many.
Another splendid rxn! I'm glad you're enjoying the show. The thing about this ep that gets me isn't that Cassandra works so well as a villain but that she works at all. Only Dr Who could pull off making a face on a frame the main antagonist in a story. I look forward to seeing your next reaction.
Thank you for the kind words!! I completely agree with you! When I watched the next time bit on the first episode (which is the only one I will be watching), it seemed pretty ridiculous. But, this episode had me totally going along with a human as flat as a pancake with it's brain in jar. lol
I'm glad to see you're enjoying the show this much already! And you're right about one thing for sure: Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper definitely have fantastic chemistry. The idea of the Doctor being the last of his kind is a new thing here - back in the Classic series, the Time Lords were alive and well (although the Doctor was something of an outcast; they didn't like his habit of meddling in the affairs of other worlds, at least not officially)
Oh, that's really interesting that they deviated from Classic Who in that way. I guess I can't really be sure since I haven't seen Classic Who, but I like the decision to have him be the last of his kind in this one. It's such a tragic backstory that gives his character so much depth.
@@BritanyBinges I think it came about because the Classic series had built up so much lore over the years, and a rather complex back-story, that the new production team felt it would be too off-putting for new viewers to have to jump into the deep end when the series was revived. Hence the decision to have something terrible happen to the Doctor in the interim. Although,it ALSO fits with what was seen in the Classic series as well.... More on that later :)
@@BritanyBinges actually, there were already hints in clasdoc Who about the time war he mentioned this episode. They just built a new arc around that. You will get to know a lot more about it. Both showrunners Russel T Davis and Steven Moffat are masters of references to classic who. I am sure, a lot of people will explain them as you encounter them.
@@iansmith4023 That makes sense as well. It seems like it was a good decision all aroung (although I'm wondering if fans who've loved the show since Classic Who was airing feel the same).
Welcome! I love seeing new reactors for Doctor Who, so I look forward to this journey. Rose aired a few weeks before my 5th birthday so the show has been the most important thing in my life since then.
WOW! It's wild to think the show has been part of the majority of your life. I bet it was interesting catching new things you had previously missed or that had gone over your head when you would rewatch it as you got older. :)
I love watching you discover all this for the first time. hope you keep going and find it all. doctor who is a special show and I think you're beginning to understand that.
So glad you're enjoying the reactions! Patreon is a ways ahead so I actually just finished filming the reaction for the series 6 finale two days ago. :)
There are a few moments in this episode when I know the reactor will ‘get’ the heart of the show. One of the. is when Rose phones her mum - a sweet and emotional moment. There are silly episodes, fun episodes, and dark episodes- sometimes a mixture of all and the show has such a big heart. Loved your reactions - you’ve just got yourself a new Patreon member.
Hi @bryter! (I responded to your comment on Patreon in case you get this before you see that. Thanks for the heads up about the syncing issue!) I had to cut most of that part because there was a lot to react to in that episode, but there's a reason it made me start to tear up. lol It was a powerful moment for Rose and that definitely wasn't lost on me. The heart of this show (and the ability to show it even during the silly or cheesy bits) is the thing that stands out most for me and I'm SO glad because that's what really keeps me invested.
Doctor Who has a great fan base, and I'm thrilled you're coming along for the ride! I hope you aren't too intimidated by the lore--after all, the show has been on the air for over 50 years (with a break for awhile), so there's a LOT out there. I think the BBC understood that, and did their level best to "reboot" the franchise to give new viewers (like you!) a soft landing while making nods to their existing fans. It was a tricky balance, but I think they pulled it off. And from your reactions so far, it looks like you agree. Onward to 1x03! :)
One of the things I'm liking is how they're giving bits of the backstory. It's enough to keep me invested and wanting to know the next piece, but not so much that it feels overwhelming. If I do get fully invested, I can honestly see getting caught up on NuWho, then going back and watching Classic Who (if I can get into it), and then rewatching NuWho to catch all the references I missed the first time around to make it almost like a new experience. :)
I'm so excited to watch your reactions.. I just found you and I'm going to catch up watching them all night even though I got to wake up early lol.. I am in the same boat when I started watching them I absolutely did not think it was something I would be into and I ended up falling in love with the show♡ I cannot wait to see your reactions I hope you continue through all the seasons I promise they don't disappoint♡
i remember watching classic who as a kid, the doctors emotional range was literally goofy professor or mildly annoyed so seeing the doctor with tears in his eyes was a bit of a gut punch. Like the first time you see your dad cry
Oh, wow. With growing up watching the show, I'm sure that's exactly what it felt like. :-( I bet that moment was a real eye-opener for how different NuWho was going to be from Classic Who for those who'd been there from the beginning.
I am pleased that you already emotionally invested and enjoying one my favourite shows. I must say you one of the best reactors I seen able to find balance between watching and commenting so you miss very little, and making for a better reaction. I am also pleased that you are respectful and engaging with your viewers and hopefully that is shown back to yourself. I knew other reactors have unfortunately faced disrespectful or spolierly comments.
Oh my gosh! Thank you so much for your kind words! When I edit the full video down to the shortened version, I always feel like I'm talking too much. So, this feedback is really nice to hear. I did get a few nasty comments on the first video and I'm sure they won't be the last. Luckily, growing up with three older brothers left me with some pretty thick skin. :)
@@BritanyBinges you more than welcome for the kind words. I have seen numerous reactions from various UA-camrs, so not too surprisingly it seems it is difficult balancing act when editing a full reaction into a shorter video. But you genuinely are the best one at this that comes to my mind. I am sorry that you have had negative comments already, but it is releiving to know you have thick skin and able to let their pathetic behaviour wash over you. Loving your reactions to this, so nice to see someone getting into Doctor Who, you’re in for a rollercoaster ride. I started watching new WHO in my early twenties, still watching it to this day. Now I’ve just started again from the beginning watching it with my kids, it’s great family viewing, and even though it can be scary sometimes, it’s all part of the show. It was always meant to be a family show, and now my kids are old enough it nice to share it with them and see them reacting to it too. We are in the middle of series 2 so a bit ahead of you, but it’s nice to watch your reaction to episodes I’ve recently rewatched. Subscribed to your channel to enjoy seeing your journey with this show.
Thank you so much!! I'm glad you're enjoying the reactions and I'm excited to have you along on this journey with me! I love that you're watching it with your kids. It's such a nice bonding experience that I'm sure they'll treasure forever. They'll also get to re-experience the show if they watch it again as they get older and understand more of the complexities, social commentary, and adult humor; which is always fun. :)
Dr Who is like a lot of Sci Fi, when it's bad it can be a bit cringe, but when it's good its AMAZING. But a good rule of thumb for most Sci Fi is that their first seasons are usually rough, but by season 2 or 3 the show really starts to hit it's stride. Also, it's worth bearing in mind that Dr Who is primarily a kid friendly family show, but more willing to take a look at darker side of life.
If the first three episodes are the show finding it's stride, I'm in for the quite the experience because they've been great! :) I can certainly see them taking a closer look at the darker side of things with Cassandra's obsession to be as thin (aka flat) as possible and her disdain for the humans who didn't stay "pure". Definite social commentary there (but, in a way that didn't feel forced; which is nice to see and difficult to pull off).
Love that you’re enjoying the show as much as you are! It’s funny that I just started Supernatural for the first time ever with my friend who’s a big fan and I’m having pretty much the same reaction as you with DW
Thank you! I love that you're having a similar experience with Supernatural. It was Dean that I was referring to in this reaction. I swear our tear ducts are connected. It's literally Every. Single. Time. lol That damn single man tear (reference will make sense in the 200th episode) always from the same eye.
I just started showing this to my dad and mom and I like for how silly and goofy it can be its kinda star wars esc and has some very deep human moments. This one was great the plot only took place in 2 or 3 sets and we got some moments with the doctor being vulnerable. Enjoying your reactions so far
So glad you're enjoying the reactions so far! I was worried about going into a show like Doctor Who since SciFi isn't my usual genre, but this episode really showed me just how much heart the show has and definitely reassured me in the beginning that it was so much more than just aliens and time travel. :) Just in case you're new to the channel, I put the channel on hiatus last Spring to work through copyright issues and to hire/train an editor. We're close to be back at full-time with the DW reactions here on UA-cam, but I did continue the reactions the entire time on Patreon. So, I actually just wrapped up series 4 over there.
I loved both your reactions and I subscribed to follow up cause I noticed how you have fallen so fast, so deep, into this show, it means you are a good soul, open for all the stories that is coming your way. And I want to watch that happening.
I watched this show when I was a kid in the early 70's but even then it had a bit of 'legendary' status having been on the air since the early sixties (I think the first episode was on the day of the Kennedy assassination!) this is just the modern incarnation. Billie Piper went on to Penny Dreadful and other things whereas Eccleston turned up in 'Shallow Grave', 'Fortitude', even the G.I. Joe movie.
Penny Dreadful is another show that's intrigued me, but I've never seen. Maybe I'll have to give it a shot at some point since I know Billie's in it. (Although, I'm going to look up the dates for that show because I don't want to know what year Billie moved from Doctor Who. lol)
As I said on the other episode, you are a really honest and engaging reactor! Keep up the good work. Hope you continue enjoying the show. I agree, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper’s chemistry together is phenomenal - they both won Most Popular Actor and Actress respectively at the National Television Awards for this show.
Seriously, thank you again this wonderful feedback! I want it to feel as if we're in the same room watching the show together, so you're comment about me being engaging means a lot. They also absolutely deserved to win those awards! If you can make me cry (more than once) in an episode where the villain is basically a human pancake, you're damn good at your job. lol It is a team effort, of course, but the best script can be ruined by terrible acting.
Just found your channel. It’s great to see another reactor starting the show (a lot of others have just caught up). I can tell you’ll really enjoy this show, definitely keep with it! P.S. you’ll definitely need tissues
There's something so wonderful about watching someone getting hooked on a show that you're so passionate about. Excellent reaction. Very much looking forward to the next one! Also feel free to spend more time talking about the episode after the reaction because I for one will definitely watch till the end.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for being willing to watch until the end. It's going to be a balancing act here in the beginning at least of saying everything I want and need to at least somewhat keep in mind the technical bits about how UA-cam decides to show my videos to more/new people (and long outros/recaps tend to have a negative impact on that). Either way, I have a feeling I'll do something special once I reach the end of this first series (either live stream to discuss it or a dedicated video discussing it).
@@BritanyBinges It’s a shame that UA-cam decides that that is the case but like you said a live stream talking about the series as a whole will be very good. A channel called 7th Hour Films does a similar thing after he’s finished a season of the show so that might work for you as well. But best of luck for the future of your channel! I understand the pains of UA-cams algorithm as I feature on my friends channel and it’s very hit and miss with certain videos due to both copyrighted footage and what the algorithm deems “A highly viewable video”.
@@benperkins791 Yeah, I'm thinking maybe a live stream at the end of each series/season and I've also been thinking about doing a mid-series/season video with my thoughts because I'm finding there are a lot more things I want to share after I've edited the video and had a chance to let the episode sink in a for a day or two.
to me this episode is the equivalent of the cantina scene from Star Wars. "LOOK AT ALL THE WEIRD ALIENS". If youre going to do this style of sci fi it is honestly kinda essential to have a deep end moment like this imo.
That comparison definitely makes sense. It's a good way to show the viewer how large and varied the world (as in the world of Star Wars or Doctor Who) is pretty quickly.
You: This is the second episode and I'm already tearing up. Me: Better invest in tissue. You won't always need 'em, but you're effed. Hope you enjoy the ride.
Funny thing is, and I may be wrong about this, but for me the very term "Spoilers" is a spoiler from Dr. Who. No my saying that doesn't spoil anything. But the very first time I personally ever heard the term was from ______ _________ ______ much later in Dr. Who. Then it entered common vocabulary. But maybe there were earlier uses of the term and this was just where I got it from. Don't worry. That all takes a long time and you won't expect it before it happens. But it is amazing.
HAHA! Oh, don't worry... there are more tears coming your way in the reaction to episode three. I just apparently going to be a wreck with this show. lol
Another great reaction. And crying - that's the thing with Doctor Who. It's a somewhat silly show, but so well written and acted, it's easy to get emotional. Often near to both laughter and tears. Really nice to follow your reactions 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for the kind words! And, yes, even in the more out there episodes like this one, the writing, acting, and score can really take it from one extreme to the other. It's impressive.
One of the things I love about this episode is the incorrect facts about Earth "artifacts". (ie. Calling it an Ipod and the legend about the ostrich) It feels very true to life to me. If you keep going with the show, you will find you really connect or gravitate towards certain characters. By the way, also a Supernatural fan. I think I know who you referenced and it makes me cry too.
Yeah, it definitely feels true to life that the history of Earth would be a little off. Love that you're a Supernatural fan! I'm trying to keep the mentions of it to a minimum as I know most people watching DW reactions won't care, but sometimes I just can't help it. :) It's Dean, by the way. If he gets even slightly emotional, I'm a wreck. lol
@@BritanyBinges I watch with my daughter. We both started out as Sam fans in season 1 but now we are huge fans of Dean. Jensen did such a good job with the character.
@@phoenixfire124 Yeah, Sam is definitely more likeable in the beginning and I do love him, but I've been a Dean girl since the first episode. :) I think Jensen is one of the most underrated actors working today and I'm excited to see the roles he takes on now that SPN is over. I'll be meething them both at a conference in April and I CANNOT wait. :D Also, I love that you watch it with your daughter. It's got to be a great bonding activity.
That's wild! I really want to listen to her music, but I don't want to do a search for it and get spoilers. Maybe I'll check Spotify. Surely that will be spoiler-free. lol
I am really happy you enjoyed this episode. I can't wait for you to meet a character which I like a lot. I think you'll like them. It's episode 9. Hope you enjoy the rest of the series and hopefully you watch more. Season 5 is my favourite, then season 10. Doctor Who isn't like most shows. (Gets worse.) It gets better. You learn more characters and understand characters emotions. Hope you enjoy Doctor Who!
It might be worth your while looking for the episode 'An Unearthly Child'. I first saw this very first episode when I was 10, back in 1963. Obviously it's very old and in black & white but it's short and could give you a feel of what the show was about. Initially it was considered to be informative and teaching regarding science and history - it developed a bit.
Yay ......im so excited for your journey through the whoniverse ...from what I see of your personality so far ...I think this is going to be a fun ride for all of us... I'm invested !! 👍😍
Doctor Who isn’t sci-fi. It’s A little sci-fi, a little drama, a little period drama, a little fantasy, a little thriller, a little light horror, a little comedy. Basically, since the new version first aired, it’s been a little bit of everything. That’s why the wide appeal.
I'm very bad at the whole spoilers thing to the point of rather not saying anything about the show at all, so let me just: amazing reaction!!! What I love about the show is how you can get attached to even minor characters
Thank you so much for being considerate about not giving any spoilers. It's very much appreciated! :) Episode three was a bit a slow starter for me, but I was super into it by the end. There may or may not have been more tears shed. lol
HAHA, I'm sure I'll be a wreck! Thanks for noticing the lighting! I'm just trying to find ways to make it a nice/special viewing experience and color-coordinating the thumbnails and lighting to each show seemed like a good idea. I chose blue before I started the show b/c one of the only things I knew about it was the color of the "phone booth". lol
Going by your second reaction you're going to love Who!. Yes you will cry a lot, but i always see that as good sign, crying over the tiniest things reflects a large empathetic heart. Welcome aboard the Whovian train Brit!. They're a few meh episodes here and there, the majority though are fantastic!.
Aww, thank you so much... both for the kinds words and the warm welcome! I'm excited to what new ways future episodes are going to crush me and reduce me to tears yet again. lol
I'm very grateful for that! Especially since, at this point, I'm not sure what is supposed to be common knowledge and what is actually a spoiler for something that gets revealed later on (like that the Doctor regenerates, for example).
Thank you! Keeping that segment at a shorter length is really more of a strategic thing having to do with how UA-cam decides to show the video to more/new people. I don't want to only do things strategically though so I'm going to be working on trying to find the right balance. :)
You’re not wrong about Billie Piper being a great actor, but therein lies something of a tale. When Christopher Eccleston was announced as the Doctor people sat up and took notice. He was a very well-respected actor, known for being very serious and taking his work very seriously. It signalled to people that they were taking the show seriously. Then Billie Piper was announced as the companion and people basically went “…what?” Because, although this wasn’t the first thing she’d acted in, she was primarily known for being an annoying teenage popstar (not personally annoying, but having a song that was annoying to anybody over the age of about 15 - look up “Because We Want To” on UA-cam if you want to see what I mean). so her announcement was kind of the opposite to Eccleston’s. And then people actually watched her in the show and were like “oh my God, she’s actually really, really good!” Because she is. And this was the show that really allowed her to get taken seriously as an actor. She writes, directs, and produces now as well, and it’s likely she’d not have been able to do any of those things had she not played Rose.
What's funny is, I actually just listened to "Because We Want To" (and a few other songs of hers) earlier today. Pre-teen me would've been all about her music, but as a woman in her mid-30s now, I can definitely how adults would've been annoyed by it back then. I completely get why people would've been taken aback about the announcement of her involvement, but I'm grateful everyone gave her a chance.
Another great reaction so glad you decided to continue on 😁 my advise would be to not watch the next time part as it can sometimes spoil the next episode look forward to watching more of your reactions
Thank you so much for the kind words and the heads up about the next time part! I've managed to avoid them on episodes 2-4 and plan on continuing to do so. I want this to be as much of a spoiler-free zone as possible. :)
15:10 Sometimes I will be so engrossed in your reaction that I just can't wait, I know how good "episode etc" is coming up so I end up watching the next episode while skipping the end part. Sorry about that, I might do it on autopilot like skipping the ending outro of TV shows while binging and going straight to the next one lol
No worries at all! I get it. I watch the end segments for some reactors, but there are others that I always skip. To each their own. I'm just happy you're watching the videos at all. :)
They have nearly a century of experience, they know their stuff!
the UK britney spears, like how Chloe bennet was the Chinese version of Britney
Man, if you're tearing up by the second episode you're in for such a ride. Can't wait for the next one!
Oh, don't worry. I cried in the next one as well! I'm going to be such a mess with this show. lol
i was gonna say, damn shes gonna be balling her eyes when the show matures several seasons later on
The more I think about it, the more I love that the first different time period we visit is when the earth gets destroyed, reminding us that the earth is finite which makes every other adventure that takes place on earth that much more meaningful. Any show that gets me to appreciate the real world a little bit more is always good in my book
Cassandra learned that it’s a very small universe when the Doctor is angry with you.😊
HAHA! Very true! It was so odd to seem angry like that, but it made it all the more powerful.
Well, I cried in the third episode as well so I'm guessing I should just expect an emotional punch to the gut in every episode. lol
I can't believe this was her first acting role!
@@ftumschk Yeah, she'd been in something like 6 or 7 other things before Doctor Who, but this definitely was her biggest role yet.
Thanks! The score in this episode was PHENOMENAL (and that's not something that always stands out to me).
@@BritanyBinges the soundtrack by Murray Gold is always a masterpiece.
It feels like every time I do, I'm crying again. lol
I'm definitely seeing why Rose is a fan favorite. She's already gone on me quite a bit and I have a feeling her character is going to have some massive growth.
The music in this show is really good! Series 1 to series 10's soundtracks are composed by Murray Gold, he's made so many good pieces for this show.
It really does add a whole other level to the emotional tone of the show. I almost never notice the music, but that's not the case here. :)
this series helped me a lot in difficult times i love this series
I'm so glad it was there for you when you needed it! Television can be so powerful that way!
It takes a lot to make cry from laughter, but the other two are pretty easy. So, I anticipate a lot of tears (both happy and sad).
@@BritanyBinges Hmmm cry from laughter... usually maybe from Brooklyn Nine Nine, or Aphmau Roleplay series on youtube...

@@JohnAShort Thanks! I was genuinely curious about that. lol

DW fans always say dont watch the "next time" trailers but you know we all watched them when they aired! 🤩
HAHA! Yeah, it seems like everyone who's warned me might have been speaking from experience. lol

Pre-teen/teenage me would've definitely been a fangirl. lol
That's a very impressive musical career and it had to take a lot of courage to give it up for acting.

Me too! I love moments like that between them because they just seem so comfortable with each other and so bonded already.
Look for story arch threads. It’s funny how you look back and see things you miss that lead to an awesome reveal.

I don't typically notice the score for tv shows, but it did stand out to me in this one. I'm glad the composer is around for a while! :)
Since you know Harry potter's cast, the actress playing Lady Cassandra was the flying instructor in the movies.
I like the first episode but this was the one that hook me. Btw... I think each alien would have a different mindset about what a gift would be. So anything is valid as a gift. =)

Thanks for the heads up about the syncing issue!)
I had to cut most of that part because there was a lot to react to in that episode, but there's a reason it made me start to tear up. lol It was a powerful moment for Rose and that definitely wasn't lost on me.
I bet that moment was a real eye-opener for how different NuWho was going to be from Classic Who for those who'd been there from the beginning.
I am certainly looking forward to your next reaction, to what I believe is a strong episode.
@@TheQuietWalker1990 Thank you again! Comments like yours are helping to get/keep me very excited about moving forward with the show beyond the first series.:)
Dr. Who gets better and better. I wish I could forget them all and rewatch the for the first time again.
I know exactly what you mean! That's how I feel about my favorite show as well. There's a lot I would give to wipe my memory of that show and experience it all again for the first time. :(
It’s so lovely to see your reaction as a newbie. I am a veteran of Doctor Who and so know all the amazing things that are to come but I love seeing it anew through your eyes.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad to have you along on the journey with me. As a veteran fan of the show, I hope I do you and it proud. :)
Just found your channel and started watching your reaction to Who. It’s my favourite show ever and your reactions are so lovely to watch. Knowing it’s your first time too is even better. If you’re crying now I can’t begin to image how you’ll react to season finale of season 2
I'm so glad you're enjoying the reactions! Oh, don't worry. I was complete mess at the end of series 2. (Actually at the end of each series so far. lol)
@@BritanyBinges Keep the reactions coming! I have a feeling you will really like season 5, no spoilers don’t worry. Look forward to coming back every week for a new one
I can certainly see them taking a closer look at the darker side of things with Cassandra's obsession to be as thin (aka flat) as possible and her disdain for the humans who didn't stay "pure". Definite social commentary there (but, in a way that didn't feel forced; which is nice to see and difficult to pull off).
Don't worry, this show will give you lots of tears:) And laughter.
And several ood fears.
Oh, no! I already have more than my fair share of odd fears! LOL
@@BritanyBinges I see what he did there "ood fears"!
@@Splashyyyyy
Spoilers:)
"This is the second episode, and I'm tearing up". Oh, you're in for a wild ride!
Can't wait!! :D
Just in case you're new to the channel, I put the channel on hiatus last Spring to work through copyright issues and to hire/train an editor. We're close to be back at full-time with the DW reactions here on UA-cam, but I did continue the reactions the entire time on Patreon. So, I actually just wrapped up series 4 over there.
@@BritanyBinges oh cool ok (:
I loved both your reactions and I subscribed to follow up cause I noticed how you have fallen so fast, so deep, into this show, it means you are a good soul, open for all the stories that is coming your way.
And I want to watch that happening.
Aww! Thank you so much!! I'm so thankful to have you here with me on this journey!!
That’s it. You’re one of us now. Welcome aboard!
HAHA! Thanks for the warm welcome! :)
@@BritanyBinges they’ve not even shown half of what they can do yet 👌🏼
Billie and Christopher are really great freinds they did panel together a 10 months to a year ago.Actually a month ago.
This show is very good. Can't wait for your episode 3 reaction. Subscribed. This show makes your cry so many times
Thank you!! Glad to have you along with me on this journey! And episode three is no exception on the crying front. lol
The end is time is best send off ever in the modern era
Tissues. Needed for many, many episodes of Who. The great thing about Who is that episodes that one person doesn't like, someone else loves.
Even just after watching the first four episodes, I can already tell there's going to be a pretty big variety... which I like. :)
Just found your channel. It’s great to see another reactor starting the show (a lot of others have just caught up). I can tell you’ll really enjoy this show, definitely keep with it! P.S. you’ll definitely need tissues
Thank you! I hopped over to your channel and wanted to sub/check some things out, but I was afraid to get spoilers. lol
@@BritanyBinges hahah yes avoid avoid avoid! But maybe check some out once you’ve caught up!
@@dwp2097 For sure! :)
@@BritanyBinges Yeah that would be a great way to express those thoughts that develop long after the episode ends. Looking forward to it!
to me this episode is the equivalent of the cantina scene from Star Wars.
Welcome to our fandom/cult. This show is the best.
Thanks for the welcome!! I'm loving it so far!! :)
You: This is the second episode and I'm already tearing up.
Me: Better invest in tissue. You won't always need 'em, but you're effed.
Hope you enjoy the ride.
HAHA! There's now a box sitting right on my desk, just ready and waiting. lol
Billie Piper had a Music career when she was 15 or 16 she was 18 when she started Doctor Who
Funny thing is, and I may be wrong about this, but for me the very term "Spoilers" is a spoiler from Dr.
😂😂😂 Well that didn't take long - Episode 2 and already tearing up :p
Loving you reactions
Also, I love that you watch it with your daughter. It's got to be a great bonding activity.
Billie Piper who plays Rose was a big teen pop star in the UK.
That's wild! I really want to listen to her music, but I don't want to do a search for it and get spoilers. Maybe I'll check Spotify. Surely that will be spoiler-free. lol
@@BritanyBinges Do Billie Piper singing on youtube.
I love this episode and I love Cassandra, she is sassy and evil, just perfect.
P.S. yes, always bring tissues when you watch Doctor Who
After crying in both episodes 2 AND 3, I've learned my lesson about the tissues.
Thank you so much! I'm excited to meet new characters and to get to know them better! :)
Ahh, okay. Thanks for this! I think I probably will do it at some point as a bonus reaction at least for Patreon.
Yay ......im so excited for your journey through the whoniverse ...from what I see of your personality so far ...I think this is going to be a fun ride for all of us... I'm invested !! 👍😍
Thank you so much!!! I hope it is fun for everyone! :) Glad to have you join me on this journey! :)
She was the British britney spears and then she got this role
Silly and barmy and then suddenly you're crying! Doctor Who in a nutshell. 😂
HAHA! I'm beginning to learn that. lol
Episode three was a bit a slow starter for me, but I was super into it by the end. There may or may not have been more tears shed. lol
Oh my! if this made you tear up, you are in serious trouble ha ha 😂
Loving your reactions and the tardis blue lighting 💙
HAHA, I'm sure I'll be a wreck!
Thanks for noticing the lighting! I'm just trying to find ways to make it a nice/special viewing experience and color-coordinating the thumbnails and lighting to each show seemed like a good idea. I chose blue before I started the show b/c one of the only things I knew about it was the color of the "phone booth". lol
I love seeing young new ones get into Who.
I'm excited to what new ways future episodes are going to crush me and reduce me to tears yet again. lol
Its so refreshing to see somebody going into the show, without prior knowledge. And Who fans don't like spoilering at all.
I'm very grateful for that! Especially since, at this point, I'm not sure what is supposed to be common knowledge and what is actually a spoiler for something that gets revealed later on (like that the Doctor regenerates, for example).
Apart from a couple of cringey episodes, you’re going to absolutely adore this series, I can tell! I’m so excited to watch your reactions 💙💙
Thank you so much!!! I'm excited to see where it goes and to have you along for the right! :)
Personally I don't mind long post reaction thoughts, a fair few other reactors I check out do 10-30 minute post reaction thoughts
Thank you!
Keeping that segment at a shorter length is really more of a strategic thing having to do with how UA-cam decides to show the video to more/new people. I don't want to only do things strategically though so I'm going to be working on trying to find the right balance. :)
@@BritanyBinges I hope you manage to find that balance
this reaction made my subscribe
it will be an honor to see your journey
Thank you so much! I'm excited to have you along for the ride!
Fantastic series, it has passion and great characters …thank you
I completely agree!
