    Going back to "The End of the World," very few reactors notice that when Rose calls Jackie on the phone, Rose's call reaches Jackie shortly before the events of the episode " Rose. " Jackie thinks Rose is calling from work and tells Rose to put some money into the lottery pool. Little timey-wimey things to notice on rewatches.

      In the full reaction, I actually make a comment about that. I couldn't remember exactly what I said so I just went back and checked. I laughed a little and said, "The lottery... yeah, that didn't happen." But, it would honestly be giving me far too much credit to say that I fully understood in the moment about the call being prior to "Rose".

    In my opinion, this two-parter is one of the most underrated stories of Doctor Who.
    If you gloss over the farting (which, to their credit, is even scientifically explained, silliness aside) and the cringy effects, there are a lot of good elements worked into this story.
    The disappearance of Rose and the effect on Jackie and Mickey, the motivation of the Slitheen and the execution of their plan, including the "mermaid" and the murder and infiltration of the government, Rose being thrown back into her regular life after travelling through time, earth reacting to "first contact" with aliens, the Doctor identifying the aliens by information thrown at him and the trolley problem at the end of part 2, I really liked all that.
    Also, Harriet Jones is one of my favorite side characters, and I enjoyed her little side quest.
    It's a real pity that most people remember this only as "the one with the farting aliens".

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +3

      I honestly was super surprised by how much I enjoyed episode five (and the story as a whole). But, the same was also true for episode 2. I think it has to do with the fact that even in the "silly" episodes, there are still some pretty complex themes and emotional scenes/moments. The writers have absolutely mastered the art of weaving those things together.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +3

      Also, I forgot I wanted to say that I loved that pointed out the trolly problem in this episode. That didn't click for me as I was watching it but it absolutely is and it's a brilliant example of what makes that particular ethical dilemma so difficult.

    • @fiddler-on-the-green
      @fiddler-on-the-green 2 роки тому +4

      Subtlety is a great strength of the early seasons, because they manage to handle a lot of interesting themes in the different episodes without someone stopping mid-plot to explain everything to the audience.
      When someone complains about too much politics in their family entertainment, I always point to this phase, since they do touch a lot of social and political topics but still refrain from on-the-nose exposition dumps.

    I don’t know if anyones answered your question but for Rose it’s only been a few days; but the TARDIS is obviously a time machine and landed back on earth 12 months later instead of 12 hours. The Doctor can navigate the TARDIS pretty well but sometimes it doesn’t fully cooperate 🤷‍♂️

    • @korinotreal0413
      @korinotreal0413 2 роки тому +8

      I haven't watched all of Doctor who (Currently in series 3) but I know that the TARDIS is supposed to have multiple pilots so I assume that the TARDIS isn't always accurate because the Doctor is the only one piloting. Controlling something that's supposed to be manned by multiple people alone should be very difficult especially something as complicated as a time machine.

    • @ftumschk
      @ftumschk 2 роки тому +3

      @@Mr2BY I think the six pilot idea first appeared in spinoff media - perhaps it was a novel? - presumably to explain why the console is six-sided. If so, the author forgot that not all TARDISes have had a hexagonal console! On TV, however, every Time Lord I can remember piloted their TARDISes on their own. The reason the Doctor's TARDIS is so erratic is because it's intermittently faulty; other (solo-piloted) TARDISes don't have that problem.

    This two-parter is indeed considered to a be weaker episodes, but this could be explained by the fact these were the first episodes to be shot, along with 'Rose'. All three were directed by Keith Boak, and it's thought - by me if no one else - that Boak's attitude to junior crew members caused a rift on set; it's definitely the case that he never worked on Who again.
    The story itself is very much a political allegory; the fighting in the Middle East being a hot topic when the story was written: massive weapons of destruction = weapons of mass destruction and all that. I'll also defend the farting - yes, it's childish but also apt; politicians as windbags. Maybe it's a British thing, but bodily functions, including farting, have long been a comedy staple in the UK, and Aliens of London/World War Three is very much a comedic couple of episodes. Finally, anything with Penelope Wilton in is elevated by her mere presence, frankly.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +11

      Hmm, that's really interesting that the same director did these three (looking back, the style of these three do seem similar) and that he never directed any others. :-/
      Oh, farting is DEFINITELY a comedic staple here in the states as well, but it generally is geared more towards kids and I don't think I thought it was funny even as a kid. lol I'm much more a fan or clever or sarcastic comedy, but everyone has their own preference.
      The political allegory aspect makes SO MUCH sense now. With watching this so long after it originally aired, and being so far removed from that time now, I didn't connect the dots about the state of things at the time the episode was created. Thanks for providing the perspective! 💙

    I didn't mind the farting aliens. The explanation of their body chemistry being calcium based and the gas exchange to compress them into the "suits," actually made sense. And the vinegar. Think of the old vinegar and egg science experiment. Where you submerge an egg in vinegar and it dissolves the shell.

    Nice reaction, and recovery, after losing so much of the first video. Mickey really steps up in this episode, even the Doctor noticed. It's almost like the Doctor helps bring the best out of people, you know, make people better. Certainly has worked on Mickey. Didn't need to with Rose though, her toughness was already there. Well now she packed her bags and has the keys to the car. It's time travel time, let's go! Take care.

    Can't remember where I heard this (think it might have been another fan), but I was told that episode 4 was the first one they shot. I don't know how true that is, but it would explain why the vibe is so different. It almost feels like they are struggling to find their identity in these two episodes. Episode 4 is usually the point where most reactors start talking about not watching anymore. Episode 5 is where they are almost sure they are going to stop. Hence, my comment on Episode 1 to wait until episode 6. Can't wait for your reaction to that one. Your reactions to moments and people in this show seem to be similar to mine. The Doctors age has always been a big issue as the last time he mention his age in Classic Who it was 953 and that was with the 7th Doctor, so he’s either lying about his age or he generally can’t remember. Part 2 is the stronger episode. The series recap is a good idea as it’s giving you time to think more deeply about it. I saw someone else say watch a Classic story at the end of this series and I think that would be a good thing. Maybe got right back to where it all began with the very first Story “An Unearthly Child”. 😁

      Personally, I 'd rather someone change it up and *not* react to "An Unearthly Child." Do 1970's " Spearhead from Space" instead, which was a soft reboot of the format, as their first Classic reaction, and *then* go back to 1963 and do "An Unearthly Child."

      Technically, my putative soft reboot occurred in the final two episodes of the previous story with the introduction of the T*** L***s into the program's lore.
      Spearhead sets up a new status quo for the Doctor, is in color, is set up to reintroduce the series to new viewers, and, just for once, I'd like to see a new reactor react to this story soon after coming to the 2005 series with "Rose" rather than faffing about with the Tribe of Gum's quest to remember the secret of f***.
      And while good, I don't want to hit a new fan with "Genesis of the Spoilers" or " Tomb of the Other Spoilers" right off the bat.

      Well, it's a good thing that I didn't do that, then. Nor would I, since I consider the 2005-present incarnation a continuation of the 1963-89 incarnation.
      My arguable use of the term, albeit in modified form, referred to a certain very long 1969 story that arguably changed the nature of the character as initially conceived and shaped by Newman, Lambert, and Whittaker during the program's initial seasons. But that's a lengthy discussion perhaps not best suited to a UA-cam comment thread on a modern reaction video.

    If you have to have technical issues then that was a okay one to loose to ‘working out the kinks’, so to speak 💁.
    I know that you’re trying to build up a few in advance, but I’m not sure how much in advance, so I’ll mention it here: After the series 1 finale there are 2 things which come before the first episode of series 2:
    A) A minisode- “Born Again”, the first of the ‘Doctor Who: Children in Need’ specials released as part of a charity telethon. Might not be reaction worthy, but it’s watch worthy.
    B) The 2005 Christmas Special titled “The Christmas Invasion”. Nu-Who always has a Christmas and/or New Years special. The first several years they form a bridge between seasons/series then later they start falling in all different spots.
    I think the cried/didn’t cry could be a good running joke for your channel!

Happily things are about to get quite a bit better. As near as I can tell all reactors of all experience levels run into glitches from time to time & I wouldn't stress too much about it.
    Although I'm not fond of this two-parter, I'll admit it at least introduces some important world and story building elements, especially for newer fans:
    - UNIT and a bit of the Doctor's history with them
    - Harriet Jones
    - Some more character development for Rose's Mom
    - Some significant character development for Mickey (who, imo, experiences the most low-key character growth of any character in the Davies era.)

    These episodes are generally seen as the weakest of the season, and it's usually the case the 1st part of 2-parters is the weaker of the two, with so many loose ends being tied up in the 2nd.

    Great reactions, but I think you might have to bulk buy in tissues! I wasn’t keen on the design of the Slitheen - I think they blew the budget on crashing the space ship into Big Ben!

    Yes, for all others it was 1 year. Can (and will) happen more often. The TARDIS has a bit of mind of its own. It takes the doctor not where he wants to be, but where he needs to be. Wait until season 6, episode 4, “The doctors wife“, its a bit about the TARDIS.

      @@BritanyBinges a little bit of info about the TARDIS is given at the end of this series, so I won't tell you more now. Currently you just need to know that it has a kind of consciousness, can travel nearly everywhere in time and space, is a dimensional folding (the bigger on the inside), can automatically translate every language and its chameleon circuit is stuck so that it appears as a telephone box (and this since start of Dr Who in 1963, so the doctor liked it and did not repair it). Oh, and it has a special alarm, the cloister bell. If you hear it, something really bad (time wise) is about to happen. Also, most don't know how big it actually is on the inside. There is an episode "Journey to the center of the TARDIS" but thats even later (end of series 7) where you get an impression.
      Also, you raised a very good question, whats the doctors actual real name? This will be the topic of quite some episodes and there are very good reasons nobody knows.

    Personally I didn't think Episode 4 was the weakest persay I think that's just down to taste I thought it was a very Doctor Who-y episode. The farting aliens were abit much but it was necessary for the plot because the slitheen struggle to get into the human costumes they have to squeeze in tight to get into them 17 years on and I still can't pronounce their home planet name. This is the first appearance of UNIT since Classic Who the Doctor has worked for them as scientific advisor previously in his third incarnation when he was exiled to earth which is what Mickey meant when he was looking up on The Doctor's history that he use to work for them and the Doctor says "They wouldn't recognise me I changed alot since the old days". Regarding The Doctor's age Time Lords can live for a thousand years but The Doctor's age is never consistent. Doctor Who is basically a kids show but it's also for all ages really too it's a family show.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому

      I'll admit, I didn't fully catch on or understand the significance of the UNIT bit at the time. I did catch the "they wouldn't recognize me" line, but it just seemed like a passing thing and I just assumed it was because he had regenerated since the last time he had interacted with the government. So, the comments about UNIT have been helpful.
      I don't think this was a weak story (as a lot of others seem to think), but I do personally think four was a weak episode. However, I think that's just because it was a two-parter and the first one is a lot of set-up with not much payoff since that came in the second part.

    Forgot to say. You are allowed ten minutes of actual Video. Though you could make it 20 minutes if the other ten minutes was Audio only. NOT ALL the Blocks you get, so long as you stick to what I said, are Legal or True. You e-mail UA-cam and ask to see a copy of the Copyright Claim. Their Automatic Blocking System is garbage and should have been scrapped years ago.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому

      Yeah, the issue is with the automatic Content ID blocks. They're the bane of my UA-cam existence. The good news is that every single video (so far) that I've disputed has had the claim removed. Even videos with more than 10 minutes of footage from the show has had the claim removed by the network. So, they're fine with what I'm doing (at least, so far), but it's the automatic blocking from YT that causes all the problems. I've found that I can't use more than about 3-4 seconds of uncut footage before that section gets flagged. So, I just try to make small, insignificant cuts where I can and then black out the screen if it's a scene that really can't be cut all that much.

    From my perspective it seems the majority of reactors have a negative opinion of Mickey.
    Which I can definitely understand based upon the character's negative traits.
    But I personally have mixed thoughts and feelings on the character at this point in the series and more later on.
    I certainly disliked him and his behaviour and actions in the first episode he was very selfish and rude and simply pathetic in numerous ways.
    In this two partner I felt for Mickey in many ways clearly he had went through a lot of abuse in the year they was gone.
    And they gave him some moments where I could care about him and give him credit, protecting Jackie and helping to save the world.
    And as the series goes on without giving anything away he becomes more 3 dimensensal in my opinion.

    • @BritanyBinges
      @BritanyBinges  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, prior to this episode I only had his behavior in the first one to go off of and he had basically no redeeming qualities in that one. But, as usual, after I edited this video and let it fully sink in, I have quite a few additional thoughts on Mickey. He'll be a definite discussion point in my mid-series video. :)
