India is by far my favourite place to travel, such an incredible adventure! Can’t wait to go back and explore the south parts and devour the cuisine. I had a memorable time in varanasi maybe 4 years ago and met incredible people
Varanasi was perhaps the most interesting spot when I toured India years ago. I always had mixed feelings about being thee. At times I felt like an intruder watching the funerals on the river. I am not sure if i would have enjoyed seeing tourists watching my own parents funeral. But watching life on the river was amazing. I have always wanted to go back for a long stay.
We have a power god dedicated to ‘destruction’. Unlike the Judeo-Christian linear view - God created in 6 days and finally there will be judgement day- the Hindu view is cyclical … and death is just a flip side of birth and the body is just a collection of elements (earth water air etc..). We don’t see ‘death’ as something to mourn..the soul has already taken another body(after death) or liberated from Cycles of birth and death forever … it’s just the body being consigned back to the elements. So don’t feel like an intruder … the rituals of death are no different than other day to day activists of living … it’s just how the universe operates.
It was India's vice president who was visiting Varanasi which caused the traffic jams. Even without such high-profile visits, Varanasi has a notorious traffic situation because it is a very old city. The hotel situation(being full) is because PM Modi dedicated the first phase of the Redeveloped Kashi Vishwanath corridor on the 13th of December 2021 and that led to an unprecedented amount of people visiting the city and even after four months, the hotel traffic hasn't reduced yet. Varanasi has noisy Streets but relaxed ghats. Enjoy your stay.
Since you are in Varanasi, Try visiting Rudraksha centre newly built , Sarnath light and sound show , Kashi Vishwanath Dham improved ... Eat at Kashi Chat Bhandar
Saraswati isn't a mythical river, it's a real river, which flows inside the earth now after being dried up by climate and geographical changes. It's already proven by scientists and archeologists a few years back.

I’ve been to Varanasi twice, first time in 2015, then again in 2020, there are very few Indian places that I return too as I want to tour the whole country, which will take a good decade more yet, but Varanasi is somewhere you can’t return to for long, it’s a magical place, spiritual beyond belief, forget the Vatican in Rome, St Paul’s in London, Mecca etc, this is the place, the feeling along the Ganges is unrivalled, the little backstreets, ally’s to walk along are from another time, but it’s this time, yesterday- today, it’s a must visit for those looking for peace, people harmony and the true reflection of Hinduism, remarkable place…
Been there at least 2 dozen times in the 1990s. During my winter stay in Sarnath (12 km distant) at CIHTS (Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies) I went many a weekend to Varanasi for delightful lunch, shopping and sightseeing. Shubham.

city of Varanasi is at least 15000 years old and continuously inhabited. it is associated with adiyogi or Shiva who created yoga spirituality and meditation. unfortunately it has become too touristy. however there is another Holy City equivalent to Varanasi named Rishikesh (birthplace of yoga) also associated with shiva which is less touristy and lot less touts.
So cool watching you travel India in (almost) real time! Thanks for your videos, I watched them recovering from Covid. Makes me want to jump on a a plane to Delhi
This is fantastic. I love the old school way of not booking ahead, just turn up and find a room you never know what you're gonna get. I was there in 1984 and I think it's even more chaotic now! Peace & Love
If you can keep the trips to 8 hours or less the local buses are great for the price imho. Especially if the road is so nice!! Happy Travels I miss India
Try and visit the kashi vishwanath corridor and also take a walk along the interconnected ghats. A boat ride, and visit the crematorium When in varanasi, also try and visit Sarnath. Visit the original archeological site- associated with Ashoka and where Buddha gave his first sermon.

It looks absolutely amazing, chaotic, colourful and noisy. I even saw monkeys just after you turned around so it was worth re-playing to notice everything. I wonder if throwing myself into the chaos of India would somehow cure me of my social anxiety and fear of crowded noisy places?

Wow, the incessant constant honking in the city is a challenge to the senses! Yet, the culture and the friendliness of the people make it a must see experience. I wonder if the traffic would be less safe with the absence of honking? ha ha
And yes, it would be unsafe to travel without honking, It's in unsaid rule that you press horn before turning or overtaking in non overtaking zone or entering a road with *T* intersection to let others know you are coming
@@georgemckinnon7134 If you notice in India there's hardly anyplace where people following road lane so all people just makes a 2-3 lane road 5-6 leading to more vehicle then it supposed to be so in this hustle people honk letting the front guy know you are behind him or he is obstructing traffic . Its like a some kind of honking language but used on a large scale. It's definitely a headache but far better then leading to see accidents 😅

Varanasi really is a place of extremes...going from absolute mayhem and chaos to complete tranquility can be achieved in 5-10 minutes. I was gridlocked here for an hour once trying to leave to get to the airport in early evening and all the calm i had felt sitting by the Ganges all afternoon turned to stress. I made the flight by a few minutes after a lot of prayer but my advice to those flying is to disregard what the hotel/guest house tells you concerning travel times, especially in rush hour. Add one hour on festival days
It maybe because of not being used to eating spices and then suddenly start eating lots of spices in one day giving your body not much time to adapt. so i would advice to start with little spicy food then go on increasing the bar as per you like and you will never get sick by eating foods from any part of India (or atleast most of the time)
interestingly when i was in varanasi i met a traveller who was awfully sick, and coincidentally him and I both ate at the same restaurant the night before. But I ate indian food and he ate a pizza. I think generally you are pretty safe with cooked indian food.

In North India, some places to explore- Bageshwar, Kausani, munsiyari, pithoragarh, almora, rishikesh, rudranath, devprayag, rudraprayag, kedarkantha, chandrashila, harshil valley ( all these places are in uttarakhand). In Himachal Pradesh some good places to explore include - Kaza, Tirthan Valley, Sethan Valley, Khajjiar, Kufri, Tosh, Dharamshala, Chitkul and many more. Kashmir is also a great option but I don't have much information about it. Since you will be visiting in December, you may enjoy visiting Varanasi, Agra, Vrindavan as well. Happy travelling!

Thanks gabe for these owsm vlogs.... Despite being living in India... I never been to such spiritual places.. Always traveled to the Merto cities goa hill stations etc.. You inspired me to explore such places 🙌
Was expecting some prayagraj vlogs. But may be you'll return in rainy season after summers and visit all these places. Especially vindhyachal mountains just south of the great north indian plains (prayagraj and varanasi are the last cities of these plains after that vidhya range starts) although not high as the Himalayas, they have lots of history and culture still alive.
You should visit Odisha....both coastal and southern odisha...its a different world out here...not mentioned in any of the tourism booklet you will found of india
Oh damn, Travelling Prayagraj in Summers. I used to go there every summer vaccation at my grandpas place, always used to get motion sick in the heat. But atleast the roads are better now and there are AC cars.
Have you had interest in visiting the Barabar Caves? Not sure of your editing turnaround on your vids, but you've been making slow progression eastward to them (they are north of Gaya). They are precision cut wonders in granite (one of the harder substances, maybe 8-9 on the Mohs scale of hardness), and the smoothness of walls are in the single digit micron range, where 1 micron is 1/1000mm. Nobody knows how they were made.
Hi Gabe: Looking forward to more videos from Varanasi (pronounced "Vaaranaasi"). The Uttar Pradesh Govt, has made the building of Expressways a priority and there is a good network of roadways all across the state now.
if you want to visit somewhere quite different to kolkata then I suggest you to go to state of Meghalaya in North East India. Meghalaya means land of the clouds. the state has 77% forest cover and its one of the most greenest place ever full of waterfalls. top 2 wettest place on Earth mawsynram and Cherrapunji are in Meghalaya. Asia's cleanest village Mawlynnong and one of the world's cleanest river dawki lies there too. Dawki River water so clear it could be mistaken for a see-through glass. in Meghalaya you would see Living root bridges. These wonderful structures have meticulously grown over a period of time and are among the biggest attractions in Meghalaya. The ever evolving Meghalaya bridges are made up of tangled thick roots that provide formidability to the structure and make it good enough to hold 50 or more people in one go. They are grown by trained Khasi and Jaintia tribes who have mastered the art of growing root bridges across raised banks of streams running through the dense forests of Meghalaya.

Kashi, "City of Light". Or Benares, even Varanasi. By any name it is the oldest inhabited city and beyond special. It is the confluence of the Jumna , Ganges and the Milky Way or so the story goes.

Stay in cantonment area ... It will have 4 star hotels with good amenities... You can use bus or autos for traveling

Varanasi may be too much for you. Choose a milder city for your first visit.

Honking works different here,
Drivers communicate through honking because you know.....we don't really follow traffic rules
And yes, it would be unsafe to travel without honking,

Gabe do you worry about getting sick from eating the food there? I had a friend get VERY sick for three weeks!
Its totally depend upon,how you will handle the spices.And try to avoid drinking regular water outside.
I've never gotten sick from the food in all my times traveling to India, so I don't worry about it. Many people do, I guess I'm lucky.

If you want to visit India,then you should visit Chandigarh,Noida, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Kolkata & North-east India 🙏🇮🇳🙏.

Oh damn, Travelling Prayagraj in Summers. I used to go there every summer vaccation at my grandpas place, always used to get motion sick in the heat. But atleast the roads are better now and there are AC cars.

Have you had interest in visiting the Barabar Caves? Not sure of your editing turnaround on your vids, but you've been making slow progression eastward to them (they are north of Gaya). They are precision cut wonders in granite (one of the harder substances, maybe 8-9 on the Mohs scale of hardness), and the smoothness of walls are in the single digit micron range, where 1 micron is 1/1000mm. Nobody knows how they were made.

if you want to visit somewhere quite different to kolkata then I suggest you to go to state of Meghalaya in North East India. Meghalaya means land of the clouds. the state has 77% forest cover and its one of the most greenest place ever full of waterfalls. top 2 wettest place on Earth mawsynram and Cherrapunji are in Meghalaya. Asia's cleanest village Mawlynnong and one of the world's cleanest river dawki lies there too. Dawki River water so clear it could be mistaken for a see-through glass. in Meghalaya you would see Living root bridges. These wonderful structures have meticulously grown over a period of time and are among the biggest attractions in Meghalaya. The ever evolving Meghalaya bridges are made up of tangled thick roots that provide formidability to the structure and make it good enough to hold 50 or more people in one go. They are grown by trained Khasi and Jaintia tribes who have mastered the art of growing root bridges across raised banks of streams running through the dense forests of Meghalaya.

Been there at least 2 dozen times in the 1990s. During my winter stay in Sarnath (12 km distant) at CIHTS (Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies) I went many a weekend to Varanasi for delightful lunch, shopping and sightseeing. Shubham.

Kashi, "City of Light". Or Benares, even Varanasi. By any name it is the oldest inhabited city and beyond special. It is the confluence of the Jumna , Ganges and the Milky Way or so the story goes.
I like how liveliness of Varanasi. It looks similar to Kathmandu Nepal, which I visited in 2018.
