Hello everybody and thanks for joining us at the Merriam Pianos UA-cam channel. Today’s video is the first in a new series of piano model FAQ videos, and we’ll be kicking off this new series by tackling the Roland FP30X.
We’ve scoured the internet for the most commonly asked questions about the FP30X and we’ll be addressing them all here.

FAQ’s
FAQ #1: What is the difference between the FP30 and FP30X?
We’ve actually done an entire video dedicated to this very question which you can check out on our channel. To quickly summarize here, there are a number of key points to note.
For one, Roland has upgraded the sound chip from the FP30 to the new BMC chip which is able to produce a more complex version of the SuperNATURAL sound engine. Secondly, they’ve doubled the polyphony from 128 to 256 notes.
Thirdly, Roland has added ¼” line outputs which makes the FP30X a true gigging piano. They have also added Bluetooth Audio, and integrated a built-in USB audio interface which is going to be a big deal to some people.
FAQ #2: Is the Roland FP30 discontinued?
The answer is yes. Roland doesn’t overlap any production when they come out with a new replacement product meaning they are no longer manufacturing an FP30s. Of course, you can still find FP30s on the secondhand market.
FAQ #3: How much does the FP30/FP30X cost?
There was a price increase with the release of the FP30X, but the cost is going to depend on your country and region. Check out the links below to get a price in your local market. In most markets, the price increase was about $100 USD.
FAQ #4: Does the FP30/FP30X have MIDI?
Yes. Virtually all modern digital pianos function on a MIDI framework. The FP30X has both USB MIDI and Bluetooth MIDI.
FAQ #5: Is the FP30/FP30X good for beginners?
The short answer here is yes. Of course, the price point has to make sense first, as you can certainly get away with a less expensive instrument for a beginner too.
That said, if you have the budget, there are a number of reasons why the FP30X is a great beginner instrument. The biggest reason is of course the PHA4 action, which is in our opinion, the best action available in this price point, bar none. The action alone makes the FP30X a killer piano for a beginner.
The sound gets pretty personal as some people will prefer other options, but a specific type of sound probably isn’t going to affect a beginner’s progress. It’s also fairly compact, so finding a place for it in the home or on the go is very manageable.
FAQ #6: Does the FP30X have weighted keys?
Absolutely. As we got into with our last point, the FP30X features the PHA4 weighted key action, which means the weighting is built to resemble the feeling of an acoustic piano action. Weighted keys are essential for developing piano technique and control.
FAQ #7: Does the FP30X come with a music stand?
Yes, the FP30X ships with a plastic music stand/rest in the box. It’s not huge but definitely functional.
FAQ #8: How do you connect an FP30X to a computer?
There are two ways to do this. It depends on the computer, but a wired connection via a standard USB cable is probably the most reliable. If your computer is Bluetooth enabled, you can also connect this way.
FAQ #9: How do you record the FP30/FP30X?
Both the FP30 and 30X have internal recorders that let you record onto a thumb drive. For recording to an external device, you’ll simply connect via a USB cable to record, or even record over Bluetooth if your device is Bluetooth MIDI enabled.
I just paid 649 for mine. Pretty happy with the purchase. I am no Chopin so I will never get better than the FP-30X can afford me.

Yes, for most of 2023, and now, January 2024, the FP-30X is about $699 USD, and the awesome FP-E50 is $300 more, and blows away practically every other 88 keyboard at the price, with exception of maybe the Yamaha DGX-670? But this FP-30X is great. I have been a long time Roland user and fan, so with exceptions, Roland will be a preferred choice.
I wanna learn without bugging my neighbors at night. Can one hook headphones to the piano?

I tried out maybe 10 digital pianos ranging from lower priced to higher priced. Casio, Yamaha and Roland. The sales person was pushing through Casio 870 on me pretty hard, it felt like a toy compared to the Roland FP30x. I have to say the Yamahas I tried were pretty great too, but something about this one.. so I bought it and I bonded with it instantly. I can’t stop playing it.

I was hard set on one of the newer Kawais, I think 201-C or something like that, but then finally got to a store to try a bunch of different keys and Roland beat everything in its price point, it wasn't even close. In fact, in my opinion it even beat many much higher priced options, really there only starting to be clear competition at a proper high end range. I was really surprised because that difference in quality hasn't really come across in most comparisons or reviews. Perhaps they can't hype one brand over the others too much or something.

Beginner here. I fell in love with this keyboard and bought it a few months ago. I also use it as a midi controller with FL Studio, VSTs etc. The action was clearly a must in my decision to buy it.
does VST plugins works with piano speakers or u need headsets to use (hear) it? I don't know how these plugins works, just need to know is there any issues with using vst? Coz thinking to get fp30x myself aswell.
@@MrPostmanish Hi, VSTs are windows software (not sure for Mac). You plug in your keyboard on your computer via midi and set a software (known as a DAW) to work with the VST. It's complicated at first but it's quite simple. So the speakers will be the ones plugged in your computer, or headphones. The VST doesn't work directly on the keyboard. It's made for computers.

@@MrPostmanish I'm not the best to answer this one. I got the keyboard but I had to move to a new place and work a lot. Didn't really have time to dig into it. But it feels nice tho. I think entry level is probably one of the best. From my research anyway.

Yay!! I bought mine months ago from your various reviews. I love it so much. Thank you. For writing I just use elec piano or piano. For recording I use it as a midi controller with its really tasty key weight and ergos. Now I am happy to see a bit more about what I may be missing out on.

Don't jump to bandwagon, every different brands have their own signature sounds.
Some people prefer Casio, Yamaha, Kawai, Nord not because they are bandwagon, they prefer these because of their sound signatures.

@@someguyfromarcticfreezer6854 This is so true. I have a Yamaha P125 and I love the piano tones, I hate the light keys. If I wasn’t on a budget, I would of got a Roland or maybe the Yamaha P515, just out of budget. I do hate the Yamaha keys on there cheaper models.
Roland sounds stunning
My son has been using a Casio CDP-130 for several years but knew he needed a more, "gig-ready" unit. That and the fact his "work" piano is a baby grand acoustic made sense to upgrade his practice piano to have a similar action. After playing the FP30X, he ordered it. We can't complain about that old Casio, however, as it has survived many gigs without issue. People are often surprised a Casio can sound so good. Some claim it's been "modified" to sound better. As my Dad always said, "It's not the arrow, but the Indian."
The Casio CDP130 is a very solid instrument for the money. From a sonic perspective in particular, Casio puts out some really enjoyable piano samples. With that said, the FP30X will certainly serve as a meaningful step up for your son, particularly in regard to the action. I hope he enjoys it once it arrives! :)
Similar experience here. I played a casio cdp s110 for one year. But upgraded to roland fp 30x just now.

Finally a review that explains the feature and what the feature is for.
I've been looking for reviews for true beginners like me who dont understand what those features are for. It helps seeing how USB connects to the computer, or how the bluetooth is turned on and connects to the app, than just saying theres a bluetooth that you can connect to app which is the kind of description you can usually get just by reading spec sheets.
I do wish there are reviews that are solely targeted for beginners learning piano. I liked that he explained what the weighted key is for and why it's a feature for digital piano other than just emulating the feel of an acoustic piano. Although, I still dont know what escapement is, and I wish there is a demonstration of recording it to a computer and recording it to a phone.also what the use is recording in midi instead of audio. I did a little reading on what midi is but still dont know what it's really useful for. I wish it had shown how the 1/4 inch jack is connected to an external speaker, whether it needs an amplifier or not. Basically demonstrating how each feature is used.
As a beginner I may not use a lot of the feature for awhile, while it's a relatively budget kind of entry level item, I'd like to know what I can get out of it in the future other than playing on it.

8:34 - The FP-10 is indeed available in the US if you have a Costco membership. They sell it at Costco with the stand and bench, and the package is called "FRP-1."

A brilliant qanda upload. I am currently looking to get a Kawai ES520, and would like the same questions answered for the ES520, please. Also my local music store, said that, in August Kawai ES120, is being released. Should I wait for this release. What are your thoughts?
If you make the same FAQ video about the Roland FP90x, I'd like to ask whether there is a possibility to mute the internal sound of the Roland in order to use a "clean" VST sound and (most importantly) how this can be saved as a preset once you turn on the piano, so that I don't have to scroll all the way up to mute the sound before playing the piano. 15:58 Instruction Manual in video form is deadly boring to watch (and to shoot - so it may be delegated?),
but it's priceless when ADHD youngster is trying to turn on the second-hand device that doesn't have all papers (or even when it's new).
It's easier to watch a good man Stu ;-)
Around 1:40, when the audio source is "Stereo Microphones", you can hear very clearly the noise of the keys... which suggests that the instrument was being played at low volume, low enough to let the microphones capture the key noise. You are unlikey to hear the mechanical noise in a grand piano because they are so loud. I recently walked into a Roland dealer and the owner was playing an FP30X: it sounded nice and sounded at a decent volume in the tiny showroom... it turns out it was at maximum volume, but a pair of small speakers facing down can't fill a room with authority. You might think it sounds super loud because you have the speakers close to you when you are playing, but move away a few meters, where the audience would be listening, and you have a pretty tiny sound. It may register loud with a decibel meter, but it lacks room filling presence. This is what Magnepan (audiophile company that makes a $38,000 speaker that is 2 meters/6.5 feet tall, 4 towers, no box) calls "Power Response". Point-source speakers (cone speakers) may sound loud when you are close, but they quickly lose pressure when you move away (true for all speakers anyway, but at a different rate for line arrays). More importantly, piston speakers (cones) are directional, so you have to sit in the "sweet spot" to get the best sound. Real pianos have a soundboard that acts like DML (Distributed Mode Loudspeakers) and disperse the sound with authority to the entire room, not only loud, but they have this "power response" Magnepan talks about.
It seems the best system to reproduce piano sounds are the Yamaha TransAcoustic pianos, followed by Kawai AURES. The difference is that Yamaha has a patent in the way they mount the transducers away from the soundboard, whereas Kawai simply sticks the transducers onto the soundboard (which will interfere with its natural vibrations). There are a few attempts made to sell speaker systems that use soundboards + transducers. For example, Resonance Piano (Italy). They have two models: grand piano style and upright. It is a speaker system in the form of a piano with soundboard and transducers. You just bring your portable digital piano and then get the sound in the same way you would in a Yamaha TransAScoustic or Kawai AURES... Well, not exactly: Yamaha and Kawai use REAL pianos and this company doesn't. The grand piano model has a weird 2-soundboard configuration: one for the mid-frequencies and one for the bass (up and down)... real pianos are true dipoles by design and this model is not, so there will be sound interference inside, similar to an upright piano. So, not a clean sound. In summary, get a Yamaha TransAcoustic for the closest reproduction of a digital piano sample that fills a room in the way a real piano does. I have attempted to build a soundboard speaker with transducers, and they sound loud and very good for some instruments (cello, violin, etc). For example, a 2x4 feet thin plywood sheet with 2 transducers sounds pretty close to a guitar... but not loud enough to compete with a piano... :(
i need that piano ... My daughter is lerning with an old Yamaha PSR340, i hope soon can purchase the Roland FP30x, seen a lot of videos i think this is the Best option in this price. Thanks.
There is one feature that no Kawai digital piano has, at any price point: a built-in USB Audio Interface. This feature is common in almost all Yamaha keyboards and digital pianos, and now available in the Roland FP30X (the Yamaha P125 had it back in 2018 and their cheap arrangers have it). Their new releases, the ES120 and CN201/301, don't have it either. This should not be confused with Bluetooth Audio or USB Audio record/playback, which are features Kawai digital pianos do have. A built-in USB audio interface is such a useful feature if you want to record to your computer. I wonder why Kawai chooses to skip this feature in all their products.
This is fundamental for those people who aren't using VSTs, for whatever reason. It's indescribably stupid that high tech instruments like previous Roland models require for one to start building a musical studio, in order for him/her to record the instrument. Laptops with a microphone port are unfindable today, and your computer alone won't help.
They finally introduced this feature in their midrange keyboards, and we're happy, forgetting how easily they could have done that 5 years earlier.

The issue why Kawai does not (in any digital or hybrid piano model) have USB Audio is also surprising to me. I actually hoped that you could explain it. On another, completely different note: do you also (I do) think that Roland FP90X has better piano sound than LX706 even though that the piano sound modelling is the same?

@@mfurman Oh, the Roland FP90X has the best piano sound of any Roland digital piano for sure. It is on par with the Fantom 8 in my opinion. I played very briefly the Fantom 8 using a pair of Yamaha HS5 studio monitors and it sounded good. After that, then you probably have the newer SuperNatural pianos... the worst I have heard are those "European" and "American" patches in the LX706/708.
@@mfurman There are no differences in the line-in signal if the piano sound engine is the same. I don't know if they played with the parameters of the sound between these models, but that's something everyone can do on its own, so it doesn't count. The LX700 series have great speakers and sound design in terms of hardware, and that definitely should make a difference.
If I have one suggestion to make however, that would be to never buy a non-portable digital piano. It's a stupid investment and you probably can find a very good grand piano in their price-range. Otherwise, go with the typical digital piano.

Personally, I find the default piano sound to be the most musically rewarding. However, depending on your tonal preferences, I would definitely suggest experimenting with the other piano sounds as some players may connect more with a more mellow or brighter voice. Enjoy your FP30X when you get it!

I had the Yamaha F45 for years and I slowly started to distance myself from playing piano. One day I step into a Guitar Center with a lady I was trying to impress, so I sat down and started to play on a Roland FP30x they had on display and immediately fell in love. About 4 days later, I didnt talk to her as much so to make me feel better, I went back and bought it. Now I play more than ever because I love this keyboard so much lol blessing in disguise I guess 😅

My FAQ: How much lag would there be using the FP-30X as a controller for another keyboard (or a sound module) The total latency, going out the FP-30X's USB MIDI OUT, into computer (a Mac Mini in my case) back out a different USB port, and into the external instrument?
Acceptable lag? (I hate lag, so it would have to be close to imperceptible for it to be acceptable for me - like less than 15ms)
P.S. The analog output of the other keyboard would probably be routed thru the same Behringer interface you showed in this video, back into the Mac Mini (running Ableton)

Latency questions and issues are very difficult to address and answer as there are a plethora of elements that factor into latency and lag that can range from the hardware, software, settings, and overall configuration. I would say the potential for very minimal, insignificant latency is there pending the performance and configuration of the other elements in your setup. It is difficult to assess without being in front of the setup. Sorry I can't be of more assistance on this front!

I have been trying to make a decision on the Roland FP-30X (vs the Yamaha P125 vs the Roland FP-10) and your videos have given me real in-depth feel of all the keyboards.
I am coming from something as different as the Yamaha PSR E-413, but I tried the FP-30X and it's really closest to the feel of a piano. Also has versatility and good tech. I'm preferring it.
Conflicted because the Yamaha P125 actually feels familiar when I play it/hear it.
Hope to graduate to a good acoustic piano in the future.

Ultimately, it is all a matter of preference when it comes to touch and tone. I have quite a bit of experience with the Yamaha P series instruments, including the P125. In my opinion, the FP30X has a more authentic touch and rewarding piano sound. But, at the end of the day, the best bet is to spend some time on each in a showroom to determine which model you connect with the most! :)

More specific: is the feel significally better than a yamaha p45, can I get better dynamics out of it and does it work in full velocity as a midi controller? It comes down to subjectivity and personal preference, but, personally, I favour the FP30X's touch over the P45 and, as such, feel that it would serve as a better MIDI controller.
Stu! Hi there from Scotland! I started looking for a replacement for a Yamaha P120 I've had for years and fancied an upgrade. Finding your channel has been an epiphany! Brilliantly done, I've learned an enormous amount about the current digital piano market after a few days you tube feasting. I'd really appreciate your opinion on my potential choices for a new piano. I have a small project studio, play drums and record myself and fellow musicians. Whilst I enjoy tinkering and playing around the piano, I'm no piano player myself, but often get people in to record "proper" piano. One fellow musician and friend in particular is a pro piano player, classically trained. I'd love to have a piano that she and others can enjoy playing and get the best performances from her. Whichever piano I choose will remain in the studio, I have no plans to gig it.
I've been looking at a new FP30x, but a few miles away, there's a used FP90 private sale in immaculate condition. The FP30x in the UK is the equivalent of $910 Canadian, whilst the FP90 is $1,209 Canadian. I can see from your tremendous videos the main differences between the two (albeit it's not a "like for like" comparison) probably the newer chip set on the X model being the major factor. I'm not too bothered by the lack of physical controls on the FP30x, quite happy to use the app to get under the hood. I'll very rarely need (if at all) to reach out and change volume or EQ settings in a live situation. I think I just need a nudge in either direction from a fully informed and seasoned pro! What would you recommend? Thanks in advance :)

At the end of the day, the choice between these two excellent Roland models is very personal and subjective. With that said, if you're looking to optimize the playing experience for potential pianists you have coming through your studio, it is a fairly easy choice in my opinion. Despite being the previous generation, the Roland FP90 is a far superior piano to the FP30X, particularly in terms of touch thanks to the inclusion of the PHA50 action. While both of these pianos have some excellent onboard tones, many people use them to control VST plugins "in the box" through their MIDI connectivity. Given the tonal flexibility available through VSTs, I would personally prioritize the touch as much as possible. Experienced players will enjoy and benefit from the longer pivot length and more authentic feel of the PHA50 action. However, these are simply my thoughts and opinions. :)

As I alluded to; playing it myself won't matter too much as I'm no player, and I'm sure either of these would be marvellous for my playing pleasure. Your indication towards the superior "playability" of the FP90 makes a great deal of sense and has helped enormously with my decision. I think I'll go for the FP90; I expect my "proper piano toting buddies" will be knocked out.

Unfortunately, I don't believe it is possible to store those sounds/settings onboard the piano itself. Some of the more advanced pianos with higher end tone engines (like the ZEN-Core engine) do have that capacity however.
Hello. Thanks for your video and answering various people's questions. I have two more myself though.
The first one is that when I play duets I really want to be able to record myself on the piano and listen to what I have just played back through the speakers so that way I can play along with myself. Now I thought that this keyboard could do that, but listening to this video you mention the recording aspect as like all it does is just let you record yourself but rather than letting you play yourself back, you have to plug in a USB drive to get it the recording to come off. That would be sad if that is all it does for the recording aspect.
For my next question, it is about the volume on the keyboard. I listened to another review of this keyboard by someone else and he said that he didn't like the volume aspect because when you turn the volume up you have to press the same button over, and over, and over to slowly increase the master volume on it. That doesn't sound like a good idea to me as the button would most likely break over time. He said that he counted the amount of times you have to press the volume button to get it to maximum volume, and that amount is 90 times! So my question for that is, once you get the volume to the exact spot you want it, does the volume automatically reset back to 0 once the keyboard is turned off? If you don't know what I mean here's an example. So say I like the volume to be mid-range and I click the button 43 times and after that, it is the right volume that I like. Then I play on the piano and it sounds great, but once I turn the keyboard off, if I turn it back one, is the volume back down to nothing where you have to press it 43 times again to get it to where you want the volume again? I don't know why this keyboard wouldn't be made with just a little knob like most keyboard where you can just slide a little knob or turn one or something. I don't know why they'd want to make everyone go to that much trouble.
Anyway, those are my two long questions! I really hope and would appreciate it if you wrote back so much because I don't know where else I should write these two comments. Have a nice day.

In terms of playing along with onboard recordings, you can actually play over top of the recording playback. So, in reference to your question, you could record one part of a duet, play it back and play the second part of the duet simultaneously.
As for the volume control, you don't have to press the volume button repeatedly. You can press and hold the button as well. If you are trying to access a very specific volume setting, you may have to press the button individually (depending on the level of precision you're seeking). The idea of this design is to avoid volume knobs/sliders getting bumped or nudged. With that said, it is a little less convenient. In terms of saving the volume setting as a user registration, I believe that is possible. You have to formally save a registration though. The piano will not default to the last volume setting upon being powered off and powered on.

@@MerriamPianos Hello Brent. I Really appreciate you writing me back since I couldn't find any other UA-cam channels that would write me back. That is awesome that you Can play back your recordings. For me I have an Alesis Recital keyboard and want to upgrade from that. One thing about it (just like my previous keyboard (Yamaha P-71)) is that it doesn't let me record anything on it. I have duets here and there that I need to play and since I don't have any else to play with me, my only way to play them is to record myself and then play along with myself. Fortunately I also have a 61 key Casio keyboard that I started out with and that one lets you record yourself but that one is only 61 keys, it is not weighted, and it is hard to have to plug in a separate keyboard just to listen to a part of a duet. So having the record option on my main keyboard would be amazing. And for the volume thing, I'm glad to hear that it isn't as hard as I thought it was! I heard from the other video that there are 5 blue lights that light up as the volume increases. So basically if you hold the volume button, is it like you hold it and one light pops up, then 5 seconds later the second light lights up, and so on? Yeah I wouldn't care about the volume being exactly precise. I just want it to be able to be loud enough to where I can hear myself loud enough and not have to press the button 80 times to get it where I want it every time I turn it on. That is so great to know. I was hoping that this would be the case for this keyboard. It looks like a really great one that has everything I would want with it. Thank you again for your help.
Is there a video out there that describes how to download other sounds to the FP30X? For instance, 3rd party VSTs? I saw a comment where the Garritan CFX and Knotaki Noire can be downloaded. Would like to see how it's done, how it sounds.
Hi! Brent here! You can use the FP-30X to control these VSTs as a MIDI controller. However, these sample libraries cannot be loaded into the piano itself. There are some instruments that have this type of capacity however. They are referred to as samplers.

I would like a video in which piano sounds of FP-90X and LX706 will be compared. I find the first for piano tone to differ a lot between these two pianos (I definitely prefer sounds from FO-90X) even though the same piano sound model is used.

I can not find the answer anywhere but.. is there a driver implementation for windows to use MIDI over Bluetooth from Roland ? Or do they limit it to their proprietary app?
The MIDI implementation chart they provide is really complete, and it sends all of the necessary messages to use it as a full controller; But does it work?

With that said, my understanding is that there are drivers available and that the MIDI Bluetooth can be implemented in order to use the FP30X as a MIDI controller for VST plugins on your laptop/computer for instance. :)

The Roland FP30X and its PHA4 action is probably the closest thing you will find to a real acoustic piano at this price point. However, if your budget allows, the PHA50 action in the FP90X offers an even more comparable feel and touch in my opinion. Thanks and hope this helps!

I’m seriously considering an FP-30X….If the app support is “discontinued without notice” what features are accessible from the front panel and display without the app? I’m mainly concerned about single note tuning as I’m a piano tech, and I often don’t particularly like the out-of-the-box tuning on digital pianos (including the Yamaha P-125)….The ability to tune note-by-note is a real selling point with me…

About the midi in/out: Since it's only by usb, is there any way to get this information passing through an external audio interface that has midi in/out, like the RME Babyface?
The FP30X actually has its own audio interface via the USB connection. With that said, you are able to connect the USB to external audio interfaces that use 5-pin MIDI DIN connectors as well, but you would need a USB to MIDI adapter.
@@MerriamPianos So I can just send the internal interface MIDI information to Garage Band, process it and use the Babyface outputs. So two USB ports, one for the FP30X and one for Babyface, and yet less clumsy than using the Babyface MIDI adapter. Thanks!
Is it possible to save in one of Roland's applicamines sound presets in a database that can be added to and retrieved from?
And a second question, if I'm already connected to one of the apps and want to also connect to the mobile phone and play audio files or UA-cam files?
That functionality is possible with certain models. The ZEN-Core technology allows you to save and transfer presets between different ZEN-Core pianos. That is a good question regarding connecting the app and playing audio files via Bluetooth. I am not at a showroom currently to test this out firsthand, but, I believe that, in theory, this is possible. However, given the amount of data being streamed simultaneously, you may run into latency issues, which would not be very practical.

There's a mic input on the FP-30X???? I thought that was just the FP-60X? The specs on Roland's site only mention that for the FP-60X . . .
Is there an adapter that converts the Roland "USB MIDI" to a standard MIDI pin connection? I want to connect my FP90X to my Yamaha Rack XS. They both have female USB-A ports. I've tried a few USB adapters and a coupler. I'm kind of surprised they left the standard port, or didn't utilize the pedal connection as a dual port. I found the Roland MIDI cable, but it doesn't seem right. Or will the Kieth McMillan MIDI expander work?
There are MIDI to USB converters such as the Roland UM-ONE-MK2. There are other cheaper generic MIDI to USB converters, but, in some cases, the lesser expensive devices do not offer the same performance, particularly in regard to latency. Spending the extra money is well worth it in this case. Thanks and hope this helps! :)
@@MerriamPianos Both of the connections are wrong on the UM-ONE-MK2 though. My experience with too many adapters is that things rarely work.
The main issue is that they both have a usb-a "device" connection (like most printers have) where the Yamaha Rack XS SHOULD have a standard usb-b port. It is just SILLY that the FP90X doesn't have standard midi connectors. Thank you for the reply.
I'd love to know if it has release velocity, i only want a digital piano because i need an accurate midi keyboard to play with my expensive virtual pianos/instruments (vsl, garritan and such) and one of the best features they offer is their release samples, but there's not a single midi keyboard that supports this function so i find myself searching in the digital piano category

You're very welcome! I'm not sure if there is release velocity to be honest. It is not discussed in any of the FP30X literature, so my guess would be that it doesn't include that feature.

(That PHA-4 action with a huge pallete of quality voices would be wonderful, but even a sight lag drives me crazy. I know there's the Fantom-08 out there, but I don't like paying for a sequencer and sampler because my DAW (Ableton) does all that)

Hi there! The answer to this will largely depend on the player. Some players will find it adequate for all grades, while others may feel stifle or limited. With that said, given that you will usually do performance examinations on an acoustic piano, it is recommended to spend some time on an acoustic instrument when doing exam prep as even the best digital pianos will have some differences and limitations in comparison to an acoustic piano. I am most interested in Audio interface stuff. I plan to get rp701 and I think that model also have Audio interface. The main thing that I want to use this for is to play other vst instruments and piano software trough the piano speakers. I am not sure if this is totally possible but from my understanding this should be doable. Like playin pianoteq vst and hearing it on the build in speakers of piano all with one usb cable... If somebody can confirm this that would be great.

Am I correct in assuming the kawai CN39 and the ES920 (and the same for the CN29 and ES520) are basically the same piano? Same action, same samples, same onkyo sound systems, though the CNs have the speakers facing down and the ES have them facing up..... Am I correct in assuming the only differences between those pianos are aethstetic? the CNs have the consoles and triple pedal units built in, while the ES are lightweight and have the advantage of being portable?
The CN29/39 have been replaced with the CN201/301. But the answer to your question is: no. The ES920 uses Harmonic Imaging XL while the CN39 uses Progressive Harmonic Imaging. The XL has longer samples of the attack portion of the piano. The ES920 has more Virtual Technician parameters. The ES920 doesn't have the same speaker system the CN39 has: the CN39 features 12 cm woofers facing down for low midrange frequencies plus 8x12 cm oval speakers for mid-high range on top, whereas the ES920 only has the 8x12 cm oval speakers tuned to reproduce all frequencies in a ported enclosure (no 12 cm woofers). The same oval speakers are not in an enclosure in the CN39, only the woofers are. The CN29 only has 12cm round full range drivers facing down, likely tuned for full range reproduction, unlike the CN39, whereas the ES520 has those oval drivers. So, the speaker systems are different. The ES520 has a different action than the CN29 has: it doesn't have leftoff (the CN29 has a more advanced action). In summary, they are not identical pianos in sound engine, speaker system, or action.

@@vitgerivaz I am glad it helped :) For me personally, the quality of the piano sample is very important. For that reason, let me warn you that the best Kawai sample is found in the CA79 and above. To me, the CA99 is the best deal from Kawai when it comes to great action and piano sound. If you are able to buy it, you won't regret it. The speaker system in the CA99 is excellent, it sounds clearer in person than the CA79 and way better than the CN series, which sounds muddy and boomy by comparison. The CN201/301, as well as any portable, is not in the same league as the CA99. I have played most Kawai digital pianos and the CA99 has the same status, to my ears, that the Yamaha Avantgrand NU1X. The AvantGrand series from Yamaha is in a different league from the rest of the Clavinova when it comes to the CFX piano sample, both from the speaker system and sample. That includes the Clavinova CLP-795GP, the most expensive one in grand piano style. Similarly, the CA99 is in a category by itself, separated from the rest of the Kawai bunch. Like the Yamaha NU1X, the Kawai CA99 is what I consider a serious attempt to make a digital piano sound reasonably close to a real piano. The SK-EX Rendering sounds much better at the sample level than the Harmonic Imaging (ES120, KDP75), Progressive Harmonic Imaging (ES520, CN39/301, CA49), and Harmonic Imaging XL (ES920, CA59). The last 3 are subtle changes, but the Rendering engine is not subtle, it is substantially better in person.
@@Instrumental-Covers I did look at those more expensive models like the CA99, but those are beyond my price range, so I'll have to make do with something cheaper, which is why I'm trying to investigate a bit to get the best possible for my budget. I'm also wondering what the price point will be for the 201/301, but seeing as they are meant to replace the cn29/39, I guess the price point will be the same or similar, maybe a hundred dollars more or something (or so I hope).
@@vitgerivaz I just checked prices on Kraft Music, and the CN39 and CN301 are listed at the same price. So, apparently, the price hasn't increased and more likely they will give you a discount on the CN39. I am not sure if the CN301 is a much better deal than the ES920... they are pretty similar in many important areas. Although the specs suggest the speaker system of the CN301 is much better, I have played these instruments in person (ES920 and CN39) and I think you really have to move to the CA79 and beyond (particularly the CA99) to hear a significant difference. So, maybe you could save money and go with the ES920.

Is it just my FP30X doing this? Use the record function on the FP30X and play something while using the sustain pedal. Then store the song to USB. Then use something like MuseScore and import the MIDI file there. On playback the pedal action is missing. Can someone confirm this? Is this normal behaviour?

Perhaps one of our community members here that uses the FP30X in conjunction with MuseScore can confirm as I do not have any personal experience with using MuseScore. However, after a little bit of investigation on line, this seems to actually be a limitation of MuseScore itself. While you can notate pedal cues, the program does not seem capable of extracting this information from a MIDI file or using the sustain pedal in real-time while controlling MuseScore with a MIDI controller.

Some professional gigging musicians certainly use the FP30X as their instrument of choice. With that said, it is designed to be an at-home portable digital piano. If you're looking for a professional stage piano, the Roland RD88 and RD2000 are worth exploring. :)

A stage piano is a specific kind of digital piano which is geared more towards gigging, unlike typical digital pianos which are geared more towards home use. They are typically more rugged to withstand being taken to and from places better and don't have built-in speakers because you'd be plugging the keyboard into external speakers on stage anyway.

Yup! It certainly can be. It has MIDI output via both Bluetooth wirelessly and its USB connection.

How is this different from the fpe50 in piano?
The FP-30X and FP-E50 are quite different. The FP30X is designed to be an at-home practice instrument, while the FP-E50 is an arranger/entertainment piano that is designed for stage use. They both have the same core piano experience in terms of the piano tone and action (SuperNATURAL tone engine and PHA4 action respectively). However, the FP-E50 has a ton of accompaniment features as well as a second tone engine, the ZEN-Core engine, which provides a far more extensive list of built-in instrument sounds.
i have a px-160 is it better to replace it with the fp30X
The FP30X would certainly serve as an upgrade in that case, particularly in regard to the action. The best bet is to test one out yourself to see if you notice a substantial difference. :)

If they had a fader as volume control, I'd immediately get one.
There are benefits to both methods of volume control. While I certainly understand having a fader/slider, there is always the chance of hitting/nudging it unintentionally and have a huge drop or boost in volume. The button approach definitely gives more security, but at the cost of convenience. Thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts! :)

The fact that Roland claims it's FP-30X has a better piano sound than its predecessor, makes probably the biggest lie ever told in the history of marketing lol!
There's absolutely no difference between the two piano sounds, except for the tremendous variability that the FP30X brings to its owners.
One thing that really changes in terms of sounds, is the fender Rhodes. FP30 had the most terrible Rhodes ever inside a digital piano; followed closely by the Kawai ES-110. The fender Rhodes you'll find on the FP30X is the same you'd find on the FP90X, no doubt!
So some differences that perhaps Stu, (whom we love to hear playing and speaking), left aside:
•The number of sounds: The FP30 has 35. It's replacement has a few hundreds.
•The electric piano section: Strongly updated on the newer model.
The FP60X won't give you many extras either, but for as much as there are people with no clue, they'll definitely sell well.
