Yeah. It is pretty obvious that Dave does not know anything about discrimination or even reasonable accommodations if Ramos really wants that ball. Baseball is super unforgiving enough as it is and you can never put an expectation of become a hall of famer or nothing, life does not work like that. That said if Ramos does want that ball, he should be allowed first right of refusal to buy it from Dave if it is for sell in the first place. The social media and personal attention from a player (any player) bit is just pure ego and selfishness on Dave's part.

Everyone here is chastising Dave (or worse) for not giving the ball back. Giving him ANY flak for his choice requires some level of entitlement. It’s his ball to do what he wants with. ANY contrary opinion comes from a position of entitlement. Some obviously more than others.
FYI, most fans who obtain valuable memorabilia like this cave in to the greed and sell them. The more important and valuable, the more likely that is. You’d very likely be in the same boat if you caught a serious milestone ball worth real money. What you should be doing is respecting a dedicated can and giving him props for saying No, it’s worth more to me to keep it. Baseball needs MORE fans like him, not sellouts.

Screw Dave. He basically said Heliot hasn't earned it because he hasn't personally kissed his ass enough. The comment about how he'd give it to a player who follows him on social media just goes to show how shallow he is and how it's all for attention. Add this situation to the other controversy on trying to leverage a free parking spot to all games by returning that Braves' home run ball and it's clear that Dave doesn't give a crap about the players or their achievements, just his own notoriety.

What's the ball worth? There's a ball on eBay right now for $10,000 that was used in the Bonds 756 game. Not even the 756 ball. Just a random ball from that game; it's signed by the game umpires as well which probably detracts from the value. The Braves ball is worth at least that much since it's the first ever visitor splash grand slam. They could have paid Dave that amount, which would be like 7 years worth of games at the rate he goes to them; I've spoke to him, he goes to roughly half the games. The Braves are worth nearly $3 billion. They could pay that amount out easily.

Great coverage Brodie! I respect Dave's hustle as well and he deserves to celebrate the home run balls that come his way. It's too late now, but he should of been more neutral with his media comments. For example, saying that he intends to keep the ball, but is open to giving it back down the line. He's passionate about what he does, so we gotta recognize that. At the same time, this is a historic baseball too. Being open to giving it back makes sense too, so that Ramos can celebrate history further and the Giants can put up space in the ball park for fans to see and learn history.
Brodie, your right, there is still time to make it right. If Dave speaks to the media i recommend he's gotta be more neutral. This day and age, there are too many eyes, ears, and voices. What people say to the media can take a life of it's own.

Very tactful, Brodie. Personally, Dave's comments make me feel embarrassed and disgusted to be a Giants fan. Your 'supporting cast member' comment really nails it. You look at people like ' The Violator' at Raider games. Supporting character, fellow fan, gives back and asks for nothing in return. Krazy George created the f'in WAVE and all he does is show up, bang on a drum, and take pictures with people.
The big difference here is that while teams have given little 'perks' as thank yous to their most loyal fans, these people have never once asked for special treatment. They're just happy to be there. This is a gross display of entitlement, and an attempt to stick some greedy hooks where they are not needed. And sure, like Brodie I can ' respect the hustle'. But then, don't call yourself a Giants fan. Call yourself a hustler. Real Giants fans would never act like this, and I hope the Giants respectfully tell Dave to shove that ball, or any ball in the future, up Broadway.

From Heliot's point of view: Yes he hit it, but this wasn't his first career home run.

I saw a video on milestone baseballs. This year Ohtani hit his first Dodgers home run and the fan who caught it said they would give it to him and all they wanted was to hand it to him personally. The Dodgers declined, but offered for a swap of signed memorabilia. This is because if the player takes the ball they are responsible for paying the taxes. If they can swap the memorabilia they can write the value of what they gave away for the ball. This is probably why Dave requested a jersey with a value of $175 vs memorabilia the Giants were going to report to the IRS as $2,000.

@@redmarauder I did see it on UA-cam, but saw it in April. I believe it was CNBC or Walk Street Journal. I can’t find it now. I do remember the Dodgers offering a swap of memorabilia for Ohtani’s first HR ball and I remember when the fans said they would do it just to meet him they said no. I also remember when Bonds was going for his records they said, you were better off letting the ball drop and if you caught it the best thing you could do is sell it to the person who offers you the most money at the ballpark, because that is when emotions are high and you won’t have to pay an auction house. You saw that with the guys who fought over his 73rd home run ball. They sold it a year later and it was worth a fraction of its original value. After each of Bonds milestone home runs, he always said, “sell it now!”. He never wanted the ball.

I was aware that Dave caught the first righty splash, but was not aware of the controversy. IMO, both the Giants and Dave could try to find some common ground. Not giving Dave a jersey instead of a bat and ball seems silly and cheap. However, it seems clear from the article that Dave loves himself some Dave and feels slighted if players don't know him or reach out to him. Get over yourself, bud.
All that said, I agree with Dave when he says he thinks MLB is cheap in terms of what they're willing to give up. We see merch being sold for 10x and 15x what it costs to make. Fans are paying $18 for a decent beer and $18 for a slice of marginal pizza. Parking runs anywhere from $40 to $160 depending on the day/opponent/promotion. We all know what players' salaries are. Profits have never been higher.
In all honesty, why is it on a fan (Dave or anyone else) to give up something of value for significantly less, for the love of the game? Does a sports franchise upgrade my ticket, for the love of the game, when I'm in the upper deck while club seats go empty? If Dave has no emotional attachments to these balls, I think he should sell them all for top dollar. Dude puts in the work. You even said you appreciate the hustle, as do I. Fact is, once the ball leaves the yard, it becomes the property of whoever comes up with it. And I certainly wouldn't want anyone telling me what to do with my property. The bottom line is, they don't have to play ball with each other (pun intended), but Dave has what the Giants want. So either pay Dave's price or don't. Just my 2 cents.

Never at the concession stands. Doesn't even wear Giants gear anymore! Only wears a giant shirt with his own name on it, which is just straight up weird if you ask me. Now he has the audacity to say the Giants owe him something? All he cares about is his own brand. And for the record, lots of people who have interacted with him in the cove say he's a jerk to put it lightly. There used to be dozens of people out there every day on kayaks, now there are hardly any. Barry Bonds retiring certainly played a role in that, but I wonder how many people stopped going out there specifically because Dave. I would be willing to guess that number is a lot bigger than most people might expect. He can keep the ball for all I care. At this point, it is plenty clear what kind of person he is.

Thousands of hours in the weight room. Thousands of hours practicing on and off the field. Hundreds of games in the minors, fall league, etc. Already was an all-star in his rookie season. What did Dave do to earn the ball? Buy a kayak and camp in the cove for a decade because he has nothing better to do? Coming to the game with a pre-made, laminated sign for the first right handed splash hit is another big revealing thing for me. Grow up Dave, you're a loser.

I disagree. The real heart of the problem is that the players and teams should not even be trying to get these baseballs back at all. Part of the thrill of going to a game as a mere fan is the hope that you might catch a ball. For a very lucky few, there are some special milestones. The player who hit it gets to celebrate it in countless other ways. They get rewarded for it, highlights of it will be played for decades, it will be talked about and celebrated by their teammates, fans, etc.. They get all the glory. The praise. The rewards, monetary and otherwise. Barry Bonds - yes, that Barry Bonds - said it best when he said it was pretty dope that he could change someone’s life just by hitting a home run that they could potentially sell for life-changing money. He understood that was the reward that fan earned by being at the game. Every fan earns their chance at that thrill. It is the height of entitlement and greed for very well rewarded players and teams to expect the fans to give up their reward for being fans. How anyone could see this any other way is totally beyond my comprehension.
This should not be a discussion at all. Dave may be unusually arrogant with his “dangling” of the ball, but that perception only exists in the first place because many players and teams have set a precedent for essentially demanding milestone balls back, while offering very little in return. The Ohtani home run at the start of this season is a great example. This shouldn’t even be a thing at all. If I were a player, and someone offered me a milestone home run back, I would want to meet them, shake their hand, take a picture with them if they want, sign some autographs if they want, then tell them that is their ball to keep. They earned it. I had the reward of hitting it and will always remember it. They earned their piece of memorabilia just the same.

Personally, I think Dave is mostly right. If a fan is the able to get a historic ball, then they should be able to get a historic pay day if the player wants it bad enough for whatever reason or they should be able to keep it and be allowed to have it authenticated for their personal benefit. Why should a fan be forced to give up a possession of theirs for LESS than it is worth? I don't think you should or even CAN put an arbitrary clause of "being authentic" or putting in enough service time or some character test as that is completely arbitrary and an "eye of the beholder" which is discrimination. If Ramos wants the ball bad enough then he should be given first right of refusal and have to pay above market rate some amount as a premium.
As far as loaning the ball out, WHY NOT? If an organization wants it and you want said organization to do things you find acceptable or they can go pound sand, power to that. I will never subscribe to making yourself the center of attention just because "you can". That to me is one of the greatest failings of American society, that everyone successful is only ever successful for their personal gain at the expense of everyone else, and that to me is the core human failing that has led to nearly every problem America is dealing with today. Ramos should not have to wait 10 years to gain your stamp of approval or wait 30+ years for someone to pass on to MAYBE be remembered in a will.
